It’s banned book week and I’m shocked to discover that Duck Blood Soup is not on the list. Please help get Duck Blood Soup banned by complaining to anyone who will listen. Won’t someone think of the children?

Inspiration from Little Rock, Arkansas
With my paying job, I travel all around the United States and get to try a lot of local restaurants. Since food is such an integral part of the novel Duck Blood Soup, I thought I would start sharing some inspirational food pictures from my visits.
This weeks pictures are from a restaurant in Little Rock, Arkansas called South on Main. The food was amazing and although I avoid visiting the same restaurant twice, I can’t wait to go back.

High School Reading Assignments
My daughters were complaining about the books they have as summer reading assignments for their high school reading classes. The issue isn’t with the reading, it is the choice of books that are made available to them. I started to read one of the books and I had to agree with my daughter about the slow start and lack of tension; and this was a book about murder.
I understand that English teachers are looking for specific types of books to make the students think, but I wonder if they’ve read the books they are assigning and if they enjoy them. Duck Blood Soup has been referred to as “…either a political commentary, an exposition on racism, or another story about teenagers saving the world. Or all 3. I viewed it as the last.”[1]
If this sounds like a book that meets the requirements for your class, let me know and I will be happy to either offer up free digital versions, or paperback versions ‘at cost’.

Headed out west
I will be in the Seattle/Olympia, Washington area the week of August 11th and in Sacramento, California area the week of August 18th. It would be great if this were a book signing tour, but it’s actually travel for my real job. Oh well, at least I may get some writing done on the plane or in the hotel.
Let me know if you would like to meet up for a beer while I’m there.
