Marie Blizard was born in Boston. Her mother was French, and her father, an engineer and inventor, came from English-Dutch stock who settled in New Amsterdam. When she was a baby her family moved to New Haven. She decided at the age of five that she wanted to become an author. Her ambition led her to that field by way of editorial work for the Conde Nast publications and advertising agency work, and she was the first fashion director of the Columbia Broadcasting System. She wrote many novels and mysteries for adults, as well as stories for teenagers.
