On December 13th, we were fortunate to have a book signing at the Hurlburt BX! It was a great opportunity to meet with readers on my home turf! It was the end of a hectic 2013 but we had a great time, sold a few books, and made some new friends!

2013 Readers’ Favorite Book Awards
What a great trip to Miami on November 23 for the 2013 READERS’ FAVORITE Book Awards! We were very pleased that SURLY BONDS won it’s second international award this year! We feel truly blessed that this has happened. It was a family affair as Kim, Lydia, and I drove from Northwest Florida to West Palm Beach. There we picked up our son Derek and his girlfriend Ripley and we headed to Miami. My parents who drove down from Daytona Beach met us there and we had a great weekend!
On Thursday night, there was a meet and greet in the lobby at the Regency Hotel and it was a great opportunity to meet a lot of my fellow award winning authors. The lobby was beautifully decorated and it was a great time.
Friday night was another meet and great followed by several presentations by some of the award winning authors. What a great experience! We learned a lot from my fellow authors.

Festival Season!
It’s been a busy two weeks for this guy and the Gulf Coast Authors. This past weekend was spent at the Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival in Pensacola and the weekend before was spent in Atmore, Alabama at the Williams Day Festival. We sold a few books but certainly not enough to make a living. I was asked ‘why even do these festivals’? I can tell you, there’s a lot to learn from these types of things. As an author, you have to be able to not only sell yourself, but sell your book as well. Quite frankly, many authors aren’t salesmen, myself included. So this is a great opportunity to learn that skill and I’m fortunate at Gulf Coast Authors to be surrounded by some folks who’ve been doing this for a long time and are quite good at it.
The most enjoyable aspect of both events was meeting aspiring writers at the event. Talking to people who want to do what I’ve done and sharing my experiences was a very rewarding thing for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m nobody special. But it does take quite a bit of effort to write a book. Then publishing it is another animal all together. . .even self-publishing. So, aspiring writers out there, keep writing-and reading. And don’t get discouraged, good things will eventually begin to happen!

Whole New Ballgame!
Wow! So much has happened since my last post. To begin with, my computer’s motherboard went Tango Uniform and I was working on an older, previously retired laptop my wife was generous enough to find for me. The laptop couldn’t keep up with the graphics on this blog or Facebook. Fortunately, I was able to keep up on Facebook on the Ipad/Iphone combo. Now I have a new laptop and we’re slowly getting back in business. So, what’s happened?
We sent out a few press releases regarding the 2013 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. On July 3rd, I received a phone call from Jeff Mullin from the Enid News and Eagle. I had a nice interview with him and sent him some additional material. Little did I know but on the 4th of July, he had a nice front page story in the Enid News and we also made the front page on the Vance Airscoop. Jeff wrote a great article and it was picked up by the Associated Press. Before we knew it, the story was turning up on all kinds of online news websites all over the country, including the Air Force Times, Army Times, Navy Times, and Marine Corps Times. Talk about instant coverage! We couldn’t have been happier!
On July 1st, we found out that SURLY BONDS won it’s second award and we were in the finals for the READER’S FAVORITE Book Awards. The winners will be determined over the next month so if you haven’t left us a review on that website, give us a shout! The winners will be announced on September 1st so we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
