Why Having a Morning Routine Matters

My morning routine has evolved bit by bit over the years. I’ve recognized its importance, especially as my life became more complex as others entered it (like my wife and kids). Back in my Costco days, I didn’t have much of a morning routine because I didn’t feel as if it would serve me.
That was before I really got into productivity practices, though.
Once I left Costco, I amped up my morning routine. I added several layers to it, making it more than what it needed to be. This was when I was transitioning into doing what I do now, so I was really experimenting with things. I was definitely in my “productivity enthusiast” phase, leaning hard into any and all productivity tips and tricks I could find.
A Better Routine EmergesThen I realized that more wasn’t exactly better, especially for a night owl who was trying to get through the mornings as best as they could. So I revamped my morning routine into something a lot like what I shared in this YouTube video.
But even that morning routine has changed in recent years. And while I still believe that an envying routine is just as (if not more important than) a morning routine, having both in place is one of the things that can create a level of certainty in your day. After all, everything that falls in between the two can be far from certain on any given day.
That’s why routines are so powerful. They don’t restrict spontaneity in your day; they actually cultivate it. Knowing that you’ve got some sort of anchor to kick off and wrap up your day can curb things like anxiety around what happens in between. You know that no matter what happens throughout the course of the day that you have command over how it begins and how it ends. Plus, you give yourself the time and space to prepare for the day with a trustworthy morning routine and the time and space to reflect on the day with a trustworthy evening routine.
The Elements of a Trustworthy Morning RoutineYou change and evolve over the years and so do the things that serve you. A morning routine is one of those things. If you want to create less friction as you craft a morning routine, then you’ll want to make sure it has a few elements that keep it from overwhelming you. Those elements are discussed further in this video below.
One thing I can say with the utmost confidence is that whether you are a night owl or an early riser is that setting yourself up for the morning starts before you go to bed the night before. Mine starts with the Monk Manual during my Evening Examination the previous evening and continues when I review what intentions I wrote down in the Monk Manual as I start the new day. Sure, my calendar and to-do list app play a role in this as well, but I feel that my attention is more attuned with my intentions with both the Monk Manual and my own Daily Driver as my allies.
Your morning routine will never remain the same as you progress through this journey called life. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put one in place – one that you can trust. In fact, it means the opposite. When you have one in place it makes every step of the journey a little more under your control than without one.
That’s why a morning routine matters.

The 3 Cs: How They Impact Your To Do List

As I laid down on a rock in the rapids using my legs as a race to keep me from falling in the cold rushing water I thought to myself, “I can’t believe I made it here.”
“Here” was the Hapao Hot Spring. My wife and I were in the Philippines for a speaking engagement I was doing and we extended the trip so we could take in as much of the country as we could.
Hapao Hot Spring was one of those things we wanted to take in.
The spot also features some cool rapids adjacent to the spring so you can go from a warm bath to frigid water (or vice versa) in just a few steps. My wife and I had hired a local guide to take us on this trek, through the Hapao and Hungduan Rice Terraces with a stop at this waterway two-thirds of the way through our journey.
But I almost didn’t make it to the water. I felt as if I was going to fall off of the thin walkway as we traversed our way along the terraces.
You see, I’m not much of an outdoorsmen. Some might even call me clumsy. (I’d agree with them.) But I wanted to experience this area of the Philippines because it was touted as a man-made wonder of the world. So I stepped outside of my comfort zone and took on the persona of a hiker.
Comfortable to ConfidentAs I walked along the terrace boundaries – some wider than most – I felt unsure about my footing. I slowed my pace, struggling to keep up with my wife and the guide. Whether that was because I was inexperienced or because the paths were not designed for feet my size wasn’t the point. The point was that I was not confident with my steps so I was careful with them.
Then I started to get more comfortable.
That happened at about the midway mark of the trip. I took longer strides, picked up the pace, and felt more confident with each step I took. Even as the path narrowed and the incline became steeper, my confidence grew.
That’s when I lost lost my footing.
No one in front of me saw this. Both the guide and Anne were several steps ahead of me when I stepped a little too far to the right and almost wound up face first in a rice terrace about a foot below. (Had I listed left I wouldn’t have just landed in a rice terrace. I would have plummeted several feet into one.)
Confident to CockyI caught myself and steadied my stance. I took a deep breath and slowly resumed walking. A few strides later the path widened and I caught up with the rest of my party, none of whom had a clue what almost went down (namely, me).
As I continued my walking, I began to think about the difference between being comfortable, confident, and cocky.
When I started the trip, I was comfortable at my own pace. I didn’t worry about what the others were doing. I went on my own way. But as the distance between us grew, I knew I needed to pick up the pace. Because I’d been doing so well to that point, I felt more confident that I could do that. And initially I was able to keep up. The distance disappeared and I was right behind them. I felt really good about where I was at and figured I could push it further.
That’s when I got cocky. That’s when I almost wound up in the mud.
https://youtu.be/dhvzWYdTICUYou don’t need to be walking along a rice terrace in the Philippines for this to happen. I don’t need to be doing that either.
What The 3 Cs Can Do to Your To Do ListTake a look at your to do list, for example. Here’s a breakdown of what comfort, confidence, and cockiness can do to it.
Comfort: A to do list that makes you comfortable will only take you so far. You’ll feel good with it to a point, but eventually you’ll feel you can be doing more. A to do list that is filled with things you need to do and little of what you want to do is one that can lead you down this path. You’re comfortable in knowing you can deal with those things that need doing, but when that happens over a long period of time you are spending more time being reactive than proactive. Sometimes you need to comfortable with your to do list (when you’re taking on a new project or job, for example). But at some point you’ll need to dig deeper and push further ahead.Confidence: When you get to a point when your to do list serves you well beyond the current day, you’re going to gain confidence with it. Confidence in your to do list is often accompanied with the knowledge that you have a solid system in place that will help you accomplish what’s on it. You’ve got a nice balance going between what is urgent and what is important, with a bias towards the latter. There’s little to no friction when you start and end your day when you are confident in your to do list and that confidence starts to spread beyond the day. Your weeks seem more in order. Your months map out in a way that they haven’t before. Everything is falling in line and you feel as if nothing can halt your forward progress.Cockiness: Cockiness can set in when you get too confident in your to do list, because things that come up out of nowhere can really throw you. This WILL happen. Anyone who says it doesn’t is not being completely honest about it. Life is unpredictable and despite every effort you can make to have a framework or process in place to deal with what life throw at you, there will always be curveballs that will throw you off your game. These are important, though, because they are the things that will humble you (and your to do list).Getting comfortable is the first step. It’s actually several steps, and you can’t skip them. They are the building blocks of what’s to come – confidence.
Being confident is important because it’s how you take things to the next level. Confidence breeds confidence in no matter what you do. In fact, you’ll go back and forth between comfort and confidence as you advance.
The Next StepsSo take a look at the to do list you have right now. Are you feeling good about it? Is it balanced with what you need and want to do? Do you have more on it than you can handle? Give it an honest assessment and decide whether it pushes too far into the realm of cockiness than it should.
(If you’re saying to yourself “Oh, yeah. This is going to be a breeze.” then I really want to you think about it harder. That kind of inner dialogue might just be cockiness trying to break through.)
You want to avoid cockiness as much as possible. It’s the thing that can derail you. It’s the thing that can hurt you. It can be the difference between pushing forward and plummeting downwards.

How to Be Productive When You’re Tired

Our energy levels ebb and flow through the day. There will be periods when you’re drained and feeling unproductive, so it’s important to figure out how to be productive when you’re tired.
I’ve made no secret about my night owl tendencies over the years. The sweet spot for my productivity is the early afternoon, with a second wind coming in the later part of the evening. My body clock just works that way. And one of my principles is to not fight my body clock.
I’m tired when I get up in the morning. I tend to stay that way until the later part of the morning. If I wanted to keep productive during those low energy times, I had to come up with a strategy. I did… and it works.
The “How to Be Productive When You’re Tired” Strategy That WorksThis strategy will work better if I show it to you with a video from my YouTube channel instead of telling you about it. Check it out.
I also use this tactic whenever I’m sick. That way I can keep things moving forward – even in a small way – instead of doing nothing and letting my tasks on my to-do list pile up while I’m sick so that the list seems impossible to tackle once I’m better.
Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, this way of attacking your to-do list will work. You can even use it on a sticky note or with whatever tool you have on hand when you need to get something out of your head. If you want to be productive even when you’re sick or tired, then make sure to give this strategy a try. It works.
I share plenty of strategies like this one in my ATTN: email. Every week I share ideas, insights, and more with subscribers. If you’d like to get ATTN: in your inbox, just put your email address in the form below… and I’ll also send you a FREE gift when you subscribe.

How to Finish the Week Strong

There are ways to finish the week strong.
You can dedicate all of your focus and attention on one single task. You can dedicate all of your focus on one massive project. You can simply write everything down that you’re going to do bit by bit and check it off as you do it.
Maybe you took the garbage out. Maybe you cooked dinner. Maybe you sent that one email you’ve been meaning to send for a while… and that’s about it.
Finishing the week strong isn’t about doing as much as possible. It’s about doing what you can do.
Take some time – right now – and write down all the things that you did today. Every last thing. And take a look at it as you cross of those things that you did.
You’re going to feel a sense of accomplishment. You’re going to feel productive.
And then use that fuel to start the next week even stronger.
P.S. Check out more videos on my YouTube channel.

4 Ways to Use The Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique is a popular technique created by Francesco Cirillo – one that has been used for years to help people have greater command over their time and their tasks. I’ve written about my lack of love for The Pomodoro Technique before and my thoughts on the tactic have evolved since then. Although I do not use it as my primary productivity driver (I use this), there are instances where I leverage its usefulness every so often.
And you can too. Here are four ways you can make that happen.
Tasks You Hate DoingI can’t think of a single person who enjoys working on tasks that they hate doing. Time just seems to drag on whenever you work on those kinds of tasks. That’s where knowing you only have to put in 25 minutes of effort into the task can be a godsend.
The Pomodoro Technique can help you with this, either in full or in part. You can earmark tasks you dislike and sprinkle them throughout all four pomodoros in a cycle or – if you’re a bit of a productivity masochist – dedicate an entire run of pomodoros to tasks that you absolutely can’t stand.
Either way, when you begin working on something you don’t enjoy already armed with the knowledge that you have a time limit of just 25 minutes, it makes the task of working on those tasks a little more palatable.
Between Scheduled EventsThe default tasks between meetings and other appointments are to check email or jump on social media for a spell. But both of those can not only suck you in, but chances are you won’t be able to see them through to completion within that short period. Especially if you have in the back of your head another scheduled event that is looming large on your calendar.
Rather than set aside time for one large project or working through email alone during that timespan, try to run a full pomodoro session in that space. If you follow the guidelines of the technique accordingly you can get plenty of focused work done in a full session.
I’m not suggesting you ignore emails at all – if anything you could use one of the cycles for email processing if you’d like. What I am suggesting is that the Pomodoro Technique can give you something intentional to capture your attention between scheduled blocks of time. (Then again, theming your time can also do this.)
During Focus Fix SessionsI’ve used the template of The Pomodoro Technique in my growing membership community, TimeCrafting Trust, during our “Focus Fix” sessions.
While some of these sessions feature 50 minute focus cycles, the majority of the focus cycles follow the model of The Pomodoro Technique because they are 25 minutes in length. Coupled with the group accountability of each of these Focus Fix sessions, the pair of 25 minute stints allow members (and yours truly) to get some great work done.
Want to join us in these Focus Fix sessions? You can learn more about my membership community here.
Make The 4th Pomodoro BetterAlready a devotee of The Pomodoro Technique? Then this suggestion is designed for you. Let me explain what you can do with “The 4th Pomodoro” in this video I’ve produced for my YouTube channel.
Want to make sure you don’t miss a single video I craft? Subscribe to my YouTube channel here.
I strongly believe it’s wise to have several tools in your productivity toolkit. So, if you’ve been curious about how you can make the most of The Pomodoro Technique then give any or all 4 ways a try and start using them today.
