TELEVISION: Britain’s Got Talent – The Surprise Inside
by Randall Allen Dunn
I heard Susan Boyle sing for the first time last week.
I had no idea.
Of course, neither did anyone else. When she took the stage – a 47-year old dumpy woman who seemed a little unclear on how to present herself – no one took her seriously. The judges and the audience contained their laughter as Susan explained her dream to become a professional singer. When judge Simon Cowell asked why it had not happened for her yet, Susan said she was simply never given a chance before. She was hoping the show would give her the opportunity she needed.
So they let her sing, preparing to be tolerant. Susan stared down at them with a smile, which almost betrayed an amazing secret that she alone knew.
She’s really good.
When she opened her mouth to sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Miserables, the judges, the audience, and the world were stunned by the beautiful operatic range that issued from her throat. She didn’t look like much when she took the stage and humbly stated her goals. When she left, it was the listeners who were humbled.
It was one of the most dramatic and stunning performances ever seen on a music reality show.
For many years, I’ve felt like Susan Boyle. Maybe you have, too. Knowing you had something great to offer, if only someone would give you the chance. Unfortunately, no one was willing to look past the ordinary-looking box of your surface appearance to find the wonderful surprise inside.
But one day they will.
One day someone will discover the richness inside you and I, and will be astounded like the audience that witnessed Susan Boyle’s first public performance. One day others will count themselves blessed to have discovered the wonderful gifts you bring to this world. The talents, the wisdom and the love that are uniquely expressed through you. Through the person you are inside.
But if you get weary of waiting, watch this inspiring video again, when Susan Boyle got the chance to reveal her stunning ability to everyone,
and know that one day it will happen for you, with the right person or the right group of people. Meanwhile, keep honing your gifts, guarding your integrity and demonstrating your kindness.
And keep smiling, knowing that it’s all there as a gift waiting to be opened.
What do you hope others will one day discover about you?
