Noblebright, Heroes, and Villains – Post by Sherwood Smith on BookViewCafe – Sherwood wrote Lhind the Thief, part of Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set. I recently found this blog post she wrote back in November, and I thought it was particularly enjoyable.

The Lord of Dreams – now up for pre-order!

The Lord of Dreams cover image

The Lord of Dreams is now up for pre-order!

When a fairy king grants a human wish, there’s more at stake than dreams.

Claire Delaney has a good life, despite her adolescent angst. But she wants more. In a moment of frustration, she wishes to be “the hero.”

What she actually wants is to be the center of attention, but what she gets is a terrifying Fae king demanding that she rescue an imprisoned fairy, facing fantastical dangers and hardships she could not have imagined.

Yet the dreams–and the rescue–are only the beginning of her journey. She is at the center of the king’s audacious gamble to end the war that has raged in Faerie for half a century.

Writer Thoughts:

This book was born of a fascination with the interactions between two characters. Those characters were not my characters, and I didn’t want to rewrite someone else’s story, but they provided the seed of the idea that became The Lord of Dreams. I played with ideas of character growth and how a person can shed pieces of himself or herself and change while remaining essentially the same person.

The Lord of Dream was fun to write. It has dangerous fairy creatures, an unpredictable Fae king, lies and truth and poetry and insanity, snark and selflessness and courage.

Publisher Thoughts:

I’m putting The Lord of Dreams in Kindle Unlimited (KU) for at least the first 90 days after release. I’ve never had a book in KU before, and I’m generally opposed to helping Amazon strengthen its monopoly on ebooks – I think a robust, competitive environment for distribution is better for both authors and readers than a single ebook marketplace. At the same time, I’m pretty frustrated with the other retailers – they’re not doing much to compete with Amazon. Improvements in discoverability, search, the publisher interface… all of those things would go a long way toward helping them compete, and most of them don’t appear to have made much of an effort. So…. for now, The Lord of Dreams is exclusive to Amazon. If you read on another device, I am not using DRM on the file, so you should be able to get the file and convert it to your format of choice. If you’re not comfortable converting it yourself, go ahead and buy it on Amazon, send me your receipt, and let me know what format you want, and I’ll send it to you.

Writer Thoughts Again:

This book was the perfect interlude for my writer-brain between The Beginning of Wisdom and A Long-Forgotten Song Book 4 (title TBD). It’s fun but not too fluffy, serious but not epically huge in scope, and full of interesting mythology that hasn’t fit in any of my other books thus far.

The pre-order is for $0.99 and it will go up to $2.99 after release week (free for KU readers). If you’re not ready to plunk down a dollar, you can get the prologue here and see what you think. The prologue takes place about nine years before the beginning of the main story. Oh, and currently the release date is set for March 12, but I expect for it to be out earlier. The pre-order also makes it look like the book is only a few pages, but it is a novel.

I would be honored if you would check it out!

Support a Fellow Indie Author – Brandon Barr

C. J. Brightley graphic header

This post was sent as an email to my subscribers yesterday. If you’re not a subscriber, you can subscribe right now! You get a free short story for signing up. What do you think of my new email header? I think I like it. Cara (the owl) is so very dignified.

~~~
A fellow indie author, Brandon Barr, faced leukemia last year. A little over a week ago, he found out the leukemia had returned, and he’s already had his first round of chemo.
I can only imagine how difficult this time is. I don’t know Brandon well, but I know he has a lovely wife and three young children.
When he announced this setback to his own mailing list, he spent very little time on his own struggle and more time talking about the generosity of JA Andrews, a fellow indie author who volunteered to take over his mailing list while he’s undergoing treatment. JA is, indeed, a wonderful, generous author – she’s one of my newest, best indie author friends and an enthusiastic supporter of noblebright fantasy. But I also thought that spoke well of both of them – that Brandon would focus on being thankful and kind to the people around him, and that JA would jump in to help a friend in need (even though their friendship was very new).
If you’d like to support and encourage Brandon by purchasing a book and/or joining his mailing list (and getting a free prequel novella), click the images below. Her Dangerous Visions is the first book in his science fantasy trilogy; it’s $2.99 on Amazon. The whole trilogy is $8.99 on Amazon. Ella Dethroned is the free prequel (free on Instafreebie for joining his mailing list. It’s $0.99 on Amazon.). I’ve just started reading Her Dangerous Visions, and it’s dark, beautiful, and inspiring. Plus, the covers are absolutely gorgeous! You can also follow his progress on his YouTube channel here.
JA’s books are below. I had the priviledge of beta reading A Keeper’s Tale: The Story of Tomkin, which just came out this week, and it is an immensely enjoyable noblebright fantasy novella appropriate for all ages. A Threat of Shadows is a bit more adult in themes but still clean and firmly noblebright. Both are $0.99 on Amazon. I recommend them both.
Thank you for your prayers, kind thoughts, and support for both of these lovely authors.
Guest Post: All About the Wonder
When I wrote the first post about noblebright fantasy, I got a comment from author L. Jagi Lamplighter (isn’t that a wonderful name?!) about the superversive literary movement. I’ll post more about that later, but I thought I’d start with this lovely essay about why she writes fantasy (reprinted with permission from her website here).
All About The Wonder
Photo by Cat Mihos
Photo by Cat Mihos
Recently, I met my first grader at the bus after school. As we walked home, he asked suddenly: “Mom, why do you write fantasy?”
I must admit, I was taken aback. I did not have an easy answer ready on the tip of my tongue (or any other part of my tongue, for that matter.) After stuttering a bit, I recovered and said, “Because it is filled with wonder—wonder, magic, and enchantment. Because when you write fantasy, you can write about anything.”
And really, that is the reason. For me, it is all about the wonder.
Fantasy can do anything, go anywhere, occur in any milieu. It can take place in your back yard, in the ancient past, on the moon, in another dimension—the nature and laws of which can be anything you imagine. It can be frightening, romantic, mysterious, filled with intriguing factoids. But there is one thing fantasy does better than any other genre, and that is wonder.
Wonder is the sensation we feel when we suddenly discover that there is more to the world than we expected….and that this more is better, or at least more awe inspiring, than we had imagined. When this happens in real life—when we hold our infant son for the first time, or rush outside on our way to work to find a baby fawn, all wet and new, standing on our driveway, what is the first thing we always say when we describe the experience to someone else?
“It was like magic!”
I live in a world where there is wonder all around me, and no one else ever seems to notice it. Amazing things happen all the time.
Once, I went to the Mall in Washington D.C. in hopes of meeting an author I particularly admired. It is rather a rare thing, to have an author one admires in town. By an even rarer quirk of coincidences, I found myself not in line with the hundreds of other people who were waiting for his signature, but standing next to him, talking to his daughter. There was a sprinkling of rain—which did not dismay his die hard fans in the least—and, when I turned around, a huge rainbow arched across the sky. But it was not just in the sky. From our position, it was coming out of the dome of the capital building!
I had seldom seen a rainbow so clearly, much less one in so auspicious a place! (This was just at the very beginning of the bank crisis, while they were first discussing the bailout. I kept wanting to shout: “Hurry! Catch the Leprechaun! Grab the crock of gold!” ) Things like that just do not happen in real life.
But it did. I even have a picture (see above.)
It was like magic!
I have always wanted to have a daughter. I have also always wanted to adopt a child. When I was a teenager, I had friends who needed adopting, but no one wanted to take on children who were so old. Too much trouble. So that became one of my dreams, too: to adopt a teenager.
I also wanted to be a writer. I have always wanted to tells stories. As a child, a group of adults who used to dress up as elves and kidnap their friends for fun once granted me the title “the Legendmaker,” because even way back then, everyone knew that was what I wanted to do.
But wanting to write and succeeding are two different things. It took me nine years to finish my first novel and another six to sell it. By the time the book finally hit the shelves last summer, I had waited 17 years.
Then, July 29th, 2009, a day I shall never forget, not if I lived for a thousand years, it actually happened. My book arrived! After all that time waiting, I held the beautiful volume in my hands.
But it hardly mattered, because just a few hours before, my husband and I had grasped each other while we sent off the email saying, “Yes, we would like to be the parents to the thirteen year old girl who will lose her ability to have a family forever if she is not adopted before her fourteenth birthday in November.” With the return email, saying that our application was going forward, the picture of the beautiful Chinese girl we had received the day before suddenly became a picture of our daughter. For the first time, after waiting four years, we saw our daughter’s face.
On the same day, I gained a book and a daughter!
It was like magic!
And that is why I write fantasy. Because I want to share that, to weave a tale of awe and enchantment so others can experience even a hint of the way I felt upon those two occasions.
Because nothing is more like magic than magic itself.
When you walk into your garden and discover that fairies really are living in your lily-of-the-valley; when you are taking a rest by a cool mountain river and you suddenly realize that what you had taken for an outcropping of rock is peering at you; when you come around what you thought was a familiar corner and catch elves dancing in the moonlight, that is fantasy at its best. When done right, it reminds us of those moments in our lives, those real moments, when the curtain of mundanity is pulled aside, and we see, not a little man from Kansas, but something vast and glorious that, if only for an instance, lifts us out of our every day life and into eternity.
And that is magic.
PS. Being an published author is a delightful thing…but being the mother of a teenage girl is even more wonderful. Life is filled with wonder every day.
Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set (second set of mini reviews)
Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set (Link goes to Amazon)
As promised, here is my second set of mini reviews of the books in Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set. You can find the first set of mini reviews here. If this is the first you’ve seen of noblebright fantasy, you can find an overview here on my site and on Noblebright.org.
In that overview post, I promised reviews of the books in this first noblebright fantasy boxed set, along with content notes and caveats as appropriate. The books are in alphabetical order by author’s last name in the set, but that’s not the order in which I’m reading them, so please bear with me as we jump around. I’ve linked to the books individually below, and of course you are welcome to buy them that way, but you’ll get a much better deal if you buy the boxed set! If, after reading the books individually or in the set, you are inclined to leave reviews, that would be awesome.
Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set is discounted for release week! Until Friday, pay only $1.99 for all twelve novels – normally buying all of them individually would cost $$$, so get the set while it’s hot!
Amazon  |  Barnes & Noble Nook  |  Kobo  |  iBooks
Rise of the Storm cover image Rise of the Storm by Christina Ochs – This is the first book in Christina’s The Desolate Empire series, which is based on the 30 Years’ War… hardly what you imagine as a noblebright setting. While war is dark and the situation seems to devolve into hopelessness, the characters (well, at least some of them) are noblebright. They fight to forgive each other (even when they don’t want to) and they sacrifice to do the right thing, even when the cost is terrifying. Christina wrote a guest post for Noblebright.org on whether tragedy can be noblebright, and I think this series demonstrates that it can.The viewpoint switched between main characters at every scene, which was a little discombobulating for me – I have a distinct preference for getting very deep into a limited number of views (as is probably obvious if you’ve read any of my books) – but it was well-executed and made a lot of sense within the story. Content rating: clean but with some more mature themes.
When a renegade priest prophesies an imminent apocalypse, a conflict is sparked which will tip a continent into war.
Prince Kendryk is young, handsome and popular, his kingdom prosperous and peaceful. But in the face of the prophesied apocalypse, he must choose between conscience and power. If he chooses the side of faith, he must defy the ruthless Empress Teodora, ruler of a vast empire, imperiling kingdom and family— but if he chooses the side of power, he risks plunging his world into a darkness worse than war.
The coming conflict will touch the lives of thousands, among them…
Prince Kendryk’s adored wife, Gwynneth, the proud daughter of a king, whose ambition may come at great cost…
Braeden, a violent mercenary, commander of a legendary winged army, who will find himself in the service of an employer he must defy to protect those he holds dear…
And Janna, the merchant’s wife, forced to abandon her home and her way of life, ill-prepared to keep herself and her children safe from the ravages of war…
Hope and the Patient Man cover Hope and the Patient Man by Mike Reeves-McMillan – I haven’t finished this yet, but I am enjoying it as I enjoy all of Mike’s books. This is a romance in the Gryphon Clerks steampunk-magical world. Patient is indeed patient (and kind and generous), Hope is adorable (and frustrated and confused), and they are obviously a good match. But the curse is real, and confronting it challenges them to grow as individuals and as a couple. Content rating: for adults and perhaps older teenagers.
When a promising date ends in head trauma and ruined trousers, Hope must confront the curse she accidentally placed on herself at the end of her first relationship. But can she do so while also qualifying as a Senior Mage, solving the mystery of her parents’ toxic marriage, and helping two awkward friends communicate – all while periodically blacking out?
A love story, with engineering. About – and for – smart, nerdy women and the men who adore them.
Content warning: While it does not depict sex directly, this book does contain “adult situations” and what one reader has described as “delicate eroticism”. If you are uncomfortable with these elements, this isn’t the book for you.
Place in the series: This is a direct sequel to Hope and the Clever Man and picks up where that book leaves off, but it can be read as a standalone.
The Keeper and the Rulership The Keeper and the Rulership by Emily Martha Sorensen – I’ve just started reading this and am already enjoying it. I’ve read some of Emily’s writing for younger readers, and it was all charming, so I’m looking forward to seeing how this story continues. Content rating: squeaky clean
In a world where both magic and mathematics are forbidden, Raneh is growing magic and she can’t seem to stop. She’ll face the death penalty if anybody catches her, so she hides it in the weeds of her family’s land, pretending to be a typical eighteen-year-old heir. And it works.
Until the Ruler comes to visit.
Now, with the purpose of the Ruler’s visit a mystery and not only her safety but her family’s reputation in danger, she has to find a way to do the impossible:
Stop growing magic.
On the Shores of Irradan cover On the Shores of Irradan by Ronald Long – I confess I haven’t started this one yet. Content rating: Squeaky clean.
Fans of the Lord of the Rings will love a new epic series by Ronald Long.
Ealrin Belouve, a man with no memory of his past, seeks the peace of a new land. After the ravages of war in Ruyn, he and his companions search for a legend in the mythical realm of the elves.
But their respite is short lived. The ever present dark comet heralds a new threat. The Empire of Enoth, an ancient elven kingdom, travels uninvited to the human lands of Darrion. As they extend a hand of friendship, a sinister plot begins to unfold.
Once again, Ealrin and his friends are catapulted into determining the fate of a continent. But can the Everring Tree restore their lost magic and heal the land before war consumes them all?
The Last Mage Guardian cover The Last Mage Guardian by Sabrina Chase – Sabrina’s work was recommended to me by Mike, so I’m really looking forward to diving into this one.
Her great-uncle, the mage Oron, bequeathed to her his oak-shaded chateau and a debt of magical honor. But in a world where women do not do magic, Miss Ardhuin Andrews must hide her magical talents. How can she repay the debt? When Oron’s enemies attack, how can she survive? Political intrigue, duty, and echoes of an old war not truly ended combine to create a smoldering crisis in a world where magic and science coexist.
Beneath the Canyons cover Beneath the Canyons by Kyra Halland – I’m looking forward to this one! Content rating: for adults and older teens
Cowboys and gunslingers meet wizards in this high fantasy series inspired by the Old West. Silas Vendine is a mage and bounty hunter, on the hunt for renegade mages. He’s also a freedom fighter, sworn to protect the non-magical people of the Wildings from ambitious mages both lawless and lawful. It’s a dangerous life and Silas knows it, but when he comes to the town of Bitterbush Springs, he finds more danger and excitement than he bargained for…
In Bitterbush Springs on the trail of a dangerous rogue mage, Silas meets Lainie Banfrey, a young woman both drawn to and terrified of her own developing magical powers. Though Lainie has been taught all her life to hate and fear wizards, she and Silas team up to stop the renegade who has brought her hometown to the brink of open warfare. The hunt takes them deep beneath forbidden lands held by the hostile A’ayimat people, where only Silas’s skills and Lainie’s untamed, untrained power can save them from the rogue mage and the dark magic he has loosed into the world.
Book 1 of Daughter of the Wildings, western fantasy romance for adults and older teens.
intothestorm Into the Storm by Angela Holder – There’s no link there because this book isn’t out yet (so the boxed set is the only way to get it!). This is a prequel novel to Angela’s The Fuller’s Apprentice, which I enjoyed. The Fuller’s Apprentice is YA, and this is probably a more adult novel, but still very clean. The world of Tevenar is incredibly noblebright; it’s far from utopian, but it’s full of people who strive to be kind and generous, even when it costs everything. Content rating: PG-13
Larine’s life is good.  She loves her work as a wizard, her best friend is the Guildmaster, her troubled son is finally thriving, and she’s together at last with the man she’s dreamed about for years.
Then one hot, sunny, late summer afternoon, a warning arrives.  A giant storm is heading straight for Elathir, threatening everything Larine knows and loves. The Guildmaster has a plan to save the city, but it will require unimaginable sacrifice.
Larine and her fellow wizards face a terrible choice. Some will live and some will die. For unless enough wizards volunteer to spend their lives to turn aside the storm, thousands of people will perish beneath the wind and waves.
The 3D image above is for Amazon, but we also have this lovely one for B&N and other retailers who prefer a flat image.
You know what would be super awesome? If you could help us spread the word! Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your reading buddies… tell everyone!
Remember that while these books are noblebright fantasy and aim to celebrate the best of human nature, they are not all appropriate for Very Young Eyes™, if you know what I mean. I have written mini reviews of Pen Pal, Lhind the Thief, Six Celestial Swords, and The Emperor’s Edge and am working on reviews of the of the books. Christina Ochs reviewed The King’s Sword, The Emperor’s Edge, Pen Pal, and Hope and the Patient Man.
We’ve also been hard at work on the Noblebright.org website. The site itself isn’t entirely polished yet, so please forgive the dust and chaos. But we do have several fantastic new guest posts up from various authors. Please click images or text links below to read the posts, and feel free to comment and share!
Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set – pre-order status – UPDATED
light-in-the-darkness-box-set-full-size
Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set (on Amazon)
Why?!
The short version is that Amazon glitched up the pricing. Badly. The problem was solved a week ago, but the Amazon’s right hand didn’t talk to its left hand and they de-listed the set anyway because the left hand thought the problem still existed.
So what happens now?
I’m still trying to reach someone at Amazon who can actually solve the problem – I’ve talked to people who understand and acknowledge it was their mistake but can’t fix it, and I’ve talked with people who don’t understand the complaint at all (despite copious documentation from me).
I hope it will get fixed soon.
LightInTheDarkness_FC_R_A
Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set (on B&N Nook)
I’m pretty upset and frustrated, as I’m sure you can imagine. I’m hoping that, because it was clearly Amazon’s mistake, they will email everyone who pre-ordered the set and let you know that it’s available again. If they don’t, I will still email my newsletter subscribers and let them know. If you’re not a subscriber, you should be! Obviously the pre-orders are really important for helping us hit the USA Today Best Seller’s list, so whenever the set is listed again, we would really appreciate your support!
In the mean time, complaints from buyers may be more helpful than more emails from me. If Amazon knows that people are looking forward to the set and want to buy it, they’re more likely to get it re-listed in a reasonable time frame. If you send a complaint to Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/contact-us), please reference the set as Light in the Darkness: A Noblebright Fantasy Boxed Set (ID B01K3534QI). The link is https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K3534QI. And of course, if you want to purchase the set on another platform, feel free!
UPDATED 9/13/2016:
The set is back up! We still have some work to do on the back end, but it’s live again! Unfortunately, we lost all of the pre-orders. Amazon has said they will let everyone know that the set is available again, but that hasn’t happened yet. Any help sharing the set and getting some of our momentum back would be greatly appreciated.
