The Orbs Series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

*Audiobook Series Review #element-01e317e7-10e0-4a73-a66f-f01c678c8799 .waddons-animation-block { visibility: hidden;} Picture   Orbs is a science fiction thriller that keeps you cringing and worrying about what's out there and what could happen if it came here!  Set in the far future, earth is in trouble- we've abused natural resources and now, what's left is wanted by another more ominous, vicious being. Can humanity be saved?  The Orbs series, written by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, is one of the best sci-fi tales I've read this year so far! #element-d7f1799c-0f2e-4014-b6f4-739d1eebf16c .paragraph { padding: 0 !important; A group of scientists, set to travel to Mars to save the inhabitants of earth, are called together to study sunspots-  then IT happens! The world as everyone knew it vanished!

Solar Storms is short and sweet, but shares a great deal. The story introduces you to the apocalyptic world of earth and the things that have come to take over. Why are they here?  What do they want and will they annihilate all of humanity?

This is a prequel but not necessary- but good to know ahead of  time.   Orbs, book 1 Orbs. What are they? What's inside them? Do you really want to now?

Deep within Cheyenne Mountain, Dr. Sophie Winston has been with her team, doing their best to save humanity, and prep for their trip for Mars, but the world has vanished!, and there are things topside, glowing orbs all about the earth.   When Sophie and a few team mates venture out, they're introduced to the New World Order. they also find out, the aliens that now rule the land, want nothing to do with humans...

This is a nightmarish science fiction thriller! The descriptions, the story is strong and the details are horrific! It's so good, you can't do anything but push forward.  Orbs shows the determination of humans wanting to survive, and the things that say different. Picture White Sands, 1.1 Picture     In White Sands, two boy survivors, brothers are introduced to the story. Jeff and David are no strangers to the loss of parents, but this time, the world has gone away too.  Alone and hiding beneath an Air Force Base, they must survive the invaders.

Fighting with instinct and two rifles, they endure and with any luck, survive!

This is a short story, just a few hours, but it provides the backstory to the children found in the prior book.  It's not necessary, but definitely a great informative tale.  Read It! Red Sands, 1.2      Red Sands is the fantastic story of Jeff and David, as well as a few others during the alien apocalypse. The story is so much stronger with this short story, and honestly, it tells more than I imagined. To me, it's very necessary, strengthening the saga instead of just filling in.

This installment also tells of the intended plan for the hidden settlements, and you begin to understand the monsters. The purpose of the spiders and a little something about who's controlling them. Read It!
Picture Orbs, Book 2 Picture      Oh the humanity! This was SO Good! The story was action packed and so full of explanation.  Filled with bigger and smarter monsters  Orbs II: Stranded was a pleaser!

The team is tired of reacting to the attacks of the Organics and decide to take themselves of a few missions.  Discoveries are made, inner-strengths are formed and lives are sacrificed and even lost. Can they fight, or possibly even defeat the alien creatures? And will they find out who's working the worker beings?

I'm almost sad this series is about to end! It's amazing, the creatures, the action, everything about this book says Share with the world!  You've gotta check it out.   Orbs, Book 3 Picture    The final segment of Orbs has arrived.  In Orbs III: Redemption, the last handful of humans are battling to save earth.  Can it be won? Can the Organics be stopped?

I can't tell you how upset I am that this series has ended. I can't believe I sat on this series for as long s I did- the story was phenom! If you're a scifi lover, you will enjoy this. It wasn't redundant and the story concept was original. Well, as original as it could get.

In final book, Dr. Winston and her science crew, along with a few marines and four children are humanity's final hope. Some will be left behind and others will be exterminated. They're strong and pushing with their final effort. The story is amazing and filled with realistic projections of what could become of us, if there are other things out there. Check out the militant, scientific, dystopian novel series, Orbs. It was so good. Orbs

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Picture What better way to show love for a book than to have Noble share as well? The Bear and the Nightingale, by Katherine Arden is a beautiful story, written in what is considered to be medieval Russia. The story glows with folklore and imagery that swept me from my feet. It's original and was written with care. Check out my thoughts! Picture I wanted to grab the audiobook, but was just too full of other stories to focus on, so I managed to check out the one sent to me- sadly, I don't remember which publisher (shame on me!). Here's the blurb:

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village.

This isn't even the entire blurb! The story is romanticized and written beautifully. I couldn't get over the strangeness, but I don't know a great deal of Russian culture to say anything negative. It was mysterious and written almost like a fairytale- attaching me to the storyline, near hungry to know what would happen next. I had to read on, too; there was nothing I could predict! Other than the mother's death, but that was made rather obvious.

This is Arden's first novel and she's one heck of a beginner! One dreams for author skills, as she's displayed.  Check out The Bear and the Nightingale, which is also available as an audiobook. I haven't listened, but if the narrator is as good as the book, I'm sure it's a winner!

*Movie Review Picture     Bethany is a haunting tale of ghosts, delusions and sloppy cereal eating. Written by James Cullen Bressnick (Hate Crimes, Pernicious, If Looks Could Kill),  Bethany sets in motion murder and a slippery slope into insanity.

Bethany and her husband have issues with their marriage, and most stems from Claire’s traumatic childhood. From her mother’s knit-picking, to pageants and forced piano playing, she isn’t sure if her mother loved her or loved to hate her. Yet, when she’s the sole beneficiary of her childhood home, she and her husband move right in. And then Claire begins to lose it.

Claire’s got secrets. She’s such an introvert, that to believe they’ve been married for anything longer than a year or two is unbelievable. Her depressing childhood, mother issues and emotional imbalance were obvious and caused her to behave robotically, not in a loving, likable way. It made the movie difficult to enjoy.

Claire’s life was riddled with personal gaps, explained through flashbacks. You’re allowed to understand why she is the way she is, but doesn’t allow you to like her. She came off unpleasant and selfish. She shut her husband out for so long, by the time he was finally thrust into the madness, you aren’t interested any more. And the reasoning is important to the story; it explained Claire’s haunted behavior!

I have to admit, my favorite part was the cereal scene: crazy and gross best describe it. I found myself replaying it. This movie isn't one of the best, but it's entertaining!

Inheritance

*An Indie Movie Review Picture There are movies that move fast and get right in your face, then there are those that are mild, subtle and creep into your territorial bubble and mystify you to bursting. That's what happened with Inheritance, an independent movie that recently released June 2nd. It’s a haunting tale that angers and befuddles you with understanding... yet no understanding at all. Picture So I guess it's true when they say, insanity runs in the family. This movie took the main character, Ryan, into the unknown and broke him in all sorts of ways. Honestly, I don't know if I understood them well, but I liked it.

The story was about continuing a cycle... or breaking it. Letting go of the past, even if you don't know it exists, or repeating it. Ryan, who was adopted, has inherited a vicious cycle created by his bloodline. It’s a cruel tradition that goes against all he’s been raised to do and believe, yet something about the home calls to him. Changes him and possibly inducts him into an evil no one expects.

Through fabulous cinematography, by Drew Daniels, you succumb to madness in the most schizophrenically romantic of ways. Though slow to move once Ryan reaches his family's legacy, as the viewer, you're carried through flashes of acts taken place hundreds of hears ago, that provide backstory. You learn of the history and the insanity, then thrusted into a vertigo of psychopathy. That's the best way to describe it!

I’m happy I screened Inheritance. The acting was great; you can tell the cast was seasoned and it just flowed like that view from the garden of the movie’s estate. The view was breath taking! And though there was no verbal explanation to the meaning behind the story, you can assume the condition of the tradition. The home movie attested the fact; I just wish I could have seen it happen.

I was left pondering the figurine. Where'd it come from and how did it begin the cycle. A curse? Revenge? I will never know, but that's okay. Inheritance was good! I think you'll enjoy it too. Check out the slide show and to see the movie's trailer, click  here . Inheritance

The Burningmoore Deaths

*Movie Review (dvd) Picture      The Burningmoor Deaths is a mockumentary on the serial murders of James Parrish. In 2005, the Parrish family was savagely murdered, with James, the father, as the primary suspect. Parrish managed to disappear into thin air, until a video surfaced, showing the murder of two teenagers in an abandoned home in Bayside Queens. In the video, a man who resembled Parrish was the killer. He remained in hiding from police, until the cast and crew of Gettin’ Hammered decided to purchase the house for rehab, into a bed & breakfast. Picture  Through a collection of “raw” footage, from static cameras set about the house, viewers got to see exactly how Parrish moved about, lurking in shadows, taking lives. With each murder more gruesome than the next, viewers saw just how much of a psychopath James Parrish had become.

The Burningmoore Deaths is set like a documentary, with interviews and news clippings. It makes the viewer believe the case is real- I looked it up, to be sure. The remaining movie is supposed to be found footage. I enjoyed the genuineness of the supposed reality show, with cast members’ quirks and playfulness, but blending Parrish’s sinister activity, so far in-between blanched the horror theme.

When the murders became primary focus, it was frenzied and in a case or two, even comical. I also found, for the movie to have been raw footage, how was there a soundtrack? It took from the movie’s authenticity.

All in all, The Burningmoore Deaths was interesting and a bit intriguing, but I don’t know if placing it in the horror genre was fitting.  The movie was on the mild side; even the gore was cut to a minimum. but a good watch nonetheless. The Burningmoore Deaths released on February 14, 2017. The Burningmoor Deaths

The Visitor

*Movie Review Picture  This is the shortest movie I've ever reviewed, but it carries a great deal of mystery and a surprise ending I did not see coming.

It begins a fertility specialist working with her pregnant patients. She's repeatedly texted by someone dubbed "Visitor". The messages are vague and haunting, but she ignores them, until she's called...

The movie is short and simple, yet the message tells you there's so much more to come. The a light build of suspense, as you wonder who is sending the messages, but what happens next is a shocker!

From what I'm understanding, there's to be a full-length film in the works, releasing in 2018.  I think I know where it's going, but I can't be sure. I was already caught off guard by the ending.

Below is the Youtube link to Visitor. Sampson has made it available for public viewing.  Enjoy!

11 Days and Counting...

[image error] To say that I am excited is beyond measure. I am not excited' I'm more like eager, thrilled, jittery, elated, ecstatic, wired, flamed, ignited and so many more! I can't believe how close my day is.  Picture So what I'll do,  to prevent an over-abundance of photos and video  on your IG, FB and Twitter threads, I will share a diary here. Every one or two days, I'll post something from my journey.  It'll be small, but each weekend, either Saturday or Sunday, I will post a collage of photos, sharing my experiences.

I can not even begin to tell you what this trip means to me. It could be the final time I get out of the country (though I highly doubt it), so I have to make this an event, you know?  I hope you enjoy my journey as well.

Please let me know what you think, by leaving comments with my posts. Everything will go under The Blog - so be paying attention!

Cheers,
      Alyssa

Halo: Nightfall

*SciFi Movie Review Picture      Let me state, for the record, I am not a gamer. I know nothing of the Halo games and franchise, other than when the soldiers are in their uniform, it's SICK!  Unfortunately, the movie was not. My experience in the adventure was a bit of a disappointment. Picture      The movie stemmed from a war between humans(?) and The Covenant. Though the movie takes place during a tentative time of peace, they're plotting against the people on Sedra. A biological attack from Sengheili terrorists. To ensure no one else is attacked in such a manner, Locke's command is sent to the planet where the weapon originated. There they learn not all soldiers are true to the cause. They also find, at nightfall, there's a swarm of intelligent, worm-like beings that will shred you to pieces if you've got any sort of EM activity. Oh, and they've got to get off the planet before the sun rises, because the temp rises to like, 900°!

I don't want to be mean, because Halo is a major game, played on all systems. Mostly guys, but lots of girls swear by this game and know it more than their own lineage! As I've stated, I'm not a gamer. I'm one of those people who thinks video games look so cool, I could easily watch it like a regular television show. I used to buy games so my son could play it, while I watch.  Yes, I'm a watcher...

Halo: Nightfall was entertaining, but very predictable. I found myself stating the obvious, and later watching it happen, just as I'd figured I don't like that. The FX weren't bad, but it wasn't enough. I don't think this went to the big screen, but had it shown at my local theater, I'd have skipped it. The acting wasn't bad, but the storyline was weak. There just wasn't enough to be thrilled about.

In the case of this movie, versus the video game, I'd have been better off watching the game... Picture
