Skybound

An apocalyptic thriller Picture I don't remember where I originally saw the trailer for this movie, but when it popped up on my Interests list, I knew I had to see it. The amazing views - remember the running bison - and idea of being in this situation ( NO SPOILERS ) simply blew my mind. So, did Skybound fly me off my seat?,  #element-0139f22f-253d-4eb7-bbe2-44712dce013e .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;} Picture Picture A few friends (listed by couples): Matt & Lisa, Oden & Roxy decide to leave Canada and head for the states, for a 3-day holiday. They're even traveling in style- a gorgeous private jet, but soon are interrupted when an "uninvited" guest happens along. He's the brother of Matt, our pilot and Lisa's ex-boyfriend and VERY much needed to raise this movie from the ground,  over Lover's Triangle.

While in the air, they discover something's wrong- for all planes in the sky! And there is where I end the retelling, but I can say it feels very familiar. I've seen a lot of movies where they have to stay above so many miles per hour or the bus will crash- erm... crash and burn, which is why I believe I got caught up in the story. It carried some coolness, but so much ridiculousness, I found myself being One of THOSE guys!

I found myself shouting, "You can't do that!" and "What the what?" so many times... I sorta felt cheated. The storyline was decent and most of the visual FX were fabulous, but there was so much that just wasn't right, had it been corrected, it would have shifted the movie's ending. And lets face it friends, anytime someone prattles on with a three minute, rousing (not) speech, you know they're gonna die!

Skybound is entertaining. I'd even venture to say it was okay- but you have to overlook the aerial as well as apocalyptic facts, along with the weak acting. Check out Skybound where ever video can be streamed or purchased on DVD.

Force of Nature

A Novel by Jane Harper Picture When I received this book, I was thrilled. It came in a small rucksack, bearing the book's title. Inside was a water bottle, the book, bookmarks, a small flashlight and a tasty bag of trail mix. It was so good, and honestly I ate them long before I read the book! LOL So was the book as good as the book swag? #element-666a6e50-adb9-4c36-9ad5-59d0b7dc0c04 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;} Picture Picture Force of Nature, by Jane Harper , is one of those stories where you're bounced from the past (the original story) and the present, after the story took place. You're in two different times, reading what leads up to both the murder and the resolution of said murder.

It's about a murder during a work retreat in the Australian bush. It was supposed to be run of the mill team building, but someone disappears and assumed dead by many. Force Of Nature tells a lot of story, but for me- it wasn't enough for me to truly enjoy it.

The book gives you a lot of backstory, which to me was okay, but I wanted to simply know what happened! All the back and forth did for me was frustrate me, mostly because all it did was show a ton of what I already knew. Office politics suck and no one's your real friend- or close family, in the scheme of things! Everyone was so ugly... seriously! It made the book feel long, you know? And I don't know about anybody else, but I felt like there was no real resolution.

Falk, the main investigator of the story is over financial matter. Why is he dropped in the middle of all this? And the murder investigation took backseat to the telling of the story that gave no clues. I had nothing to try and figure out! What the heck, man!? Maybe it's because I didn't read The Dry, which is book one, of which I hadn't a clue it was a series novel. Could be...

All I can say is, right now I am not a fan. The story is nicely written, but it really wasn't all it had been hyped up to be. Still love my swag though!
Cheers!

Renegades

A novel by Marissa Meyer Picture I must admit, I am a true Lunar Chronicles lover. When I began that series, I was doubtful, but fell in love with the book covers so much I had to read them. By the time I finished, I was so caught up- it became my favorite YA series. I could read and listen to them again and again. When I heard about Renegades, I was skeptical. I actually wanted to like the story, but not. That make any sense? #element-501cb6ed-b6df-4ace-bfa2-4391a6042138 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;} Picture This is an audiobook review by MacMillan Audio; creatively narrated by Rebecca Solar and Dan Bittner,.Through their voices and Marissa Meyer 's talent of telling a story, I found myself enjoying Renegades. The twists and turns pulled me in, the hook to tempting to resist.

The story is about Nova, a girl bent on revenge, or so it seems. After losing her family to a murderous gang, she joins her uncle in a band of Anarchists, bent against the system that now rules the world. They believe in freedom and rights and independence. But a group that fears freedom untamed is highly unpredictable and threatening wants to prevent that. The Renegades want to restore order, bring rules and control the calamity. But who's right? Who's trying to run the world? And who's going to pay for what happened to Nova's family all those years ago?

The story takes you thorugh the lives of super heroes. And with the life of a hero, there are lines that are constantly being raised, daring to be crossed. Nova is there, 100% of the time and she really hates it. You're led to believe that, anyway; I enjoyed the comic book vibe it gave, and I have a feeling I already know what's going to happen, so that makes me wonder if I want to read the next book or not.

Renegades is fun. It's adventurous and a pretty cool read, but it just didn't hit me the way LC did. But that's okay- every book isn't a humongous winner. She stepped into a genre that will need lots of information. And maybe some illustrations- graphic novel lovers love illustrations!  I don't know. It was cool, but as far as reading the follow-up... it may not happen.

Check out Renegades by Marissa Meyer, while I move on to the next read!
Cheers!

The Ritual

A Netflix Original Movie Picture The beginning of this movie put me in a bad way. I was so upset at what happened, I had to text my daughter fussing about it. But I love when a story does that to me too. I get invested. The Ritual is a story about some plain bad luck, an opportunity for action, forgiveness and then some even worse luck. #element-a476d8f7-b970-4307-9b15-c984458253e2 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;} Picture Picture The entire reason for this movie is misfortune. When five college friends wind up, minus one, they decide to follow through on their last conversation: Let's go hiking! But what was supposed to give tribute to a fallen mate winds up a fight for survival.

When the guys decide to cross  a lush, Swedish landscape, to celebrate their friendship and honor a friend who'd died. It was supposed to be invigorating and eye-opening. Instead, it turns into a life or death situation of the most preternatural kind. They find themselves being followed, stalked, hunted.

The Ritual starts off strong, invoking emotions that I haven't felt in a long time- I wish I could say what irked me but it would offer up a SPOILER! And you know I don't do those. Anyway, I mostly felt anger in the beginning, but that's what a good movie's supposed to do right? Much like the women in The Descent, the fellas make decisions that are slightly foolish, and they know it! The choices made are what land them in seriously hot water. (Why don't they ever listen to me!)

The movie also goes deep into emotions like regret. You see what runs through our minds every day, sorta like an allegory without all the spiritualism and stuff. It's a good movie that wants to hand over a lesson, but guys don't ask directions- why listen to their Jiminy Crickets?

Anyway, the movie is really good and runs around 94 minutes. It's good but I had to admit, the ending was nothing like I imagined it would be. The FX are cool, the scenery plays with your eyes, but when you see, you see and jump up with the remote- pausing scenes. I know I did. LOL

Cheers! The Ritual

Newfangled Faity Tales: Little Bad Wolf & Red Riding Hood - Classic stories with a funny twist

A short story from a book of shorts by Timothy Tocher Picture Everyone's got a new twist on an old tale these days. I've read at least four different retellings, each one a creative reproduction. Little Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood is one of them. Written by Timothy Tocher , it plants a new spin on the story about a little girl traipsing through the woods to deliver food to her dear, old granny.

I found this one very funny. What would have made it better? Some amazing illustrations! Don't get me wrong, this isn't a version for little Suzie Q and Tommy, but it's not rude, vulgar or nasty. It's good, clean fun that anyone can enjoy. It just would have been better with pics! lol

Marvel's Black Panther

A Spectacular Movie Review! Picture Have you seen this movie?
Black Panther is one of the best movies I've watched in months! I couldn't believe how great it was, and I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon because I'm black. I've been a comic/Fangirl (a variety of characters)- all my life, so when this one was announced and the trailer shared, I knew it was one I'd see in theaters. But just how blown away was I? #element-681a3a51-b318-48a2-8e03-44a55b08a591 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;} Picture Picture How about I sat in awe the entire movie! I was incredibly impressed by a few factors that the other Marvel movies didn't focus on. Prince T'challa wasn't trying to simply save the world (though that was a bit of it), he was simply trying to save his people. The threat was focused in one primary area and that's all it was about. Yeah, you're lured into something else when the movie begins, but that's what's so cool about it. There was an about face that totally made the film.

Next, because the threat wasn't about saving the world, it allowed me to see the true reasoning behind the story. I was able to not only like the characters, but grasp their inner-strengths, their knowledge and I formed attachments to them. They were made to be liked, loved and adored without all the mushiness found in the other movies. I didn't like T'Challa because he was Prince, soon to be King. I liked him because he was focused without being obstinate and royally self-righteous; he was a good man.

Lastly, I loved Killmonger. His character was amazing. To see a villain be born, stealthily use his gifts to become the man he became- it was brilliant! Jordan played the part well; he was actually a perfect choice. I've watched his acting bloom and I feel he's going to become a pretty good actor. I also love that he's in a variety of movies, like this one, not just a bunch of thuggish films.

For just a second, I want to brag about Danai Gurira. She's been a fabulous character on The Walking Dead, but her as Okoye was phenom! She's already a strong woman and actress, but this role- She Owned It! I loved her so much in this movie. I knew I was going to like her before I even saw the movie; I even have her Funko Pop coming next week.

The Forgotten (2014)

*A horror movie review Picture Yeah, you know me- if there's an accent, I am there! I came across this gem on Netflix. It's in the genre of horror, but it's not a horrific movie. There's no blood, other a beat down or two lands someone in hospital. There aren't any jump scares, just a sort of classic haunt from across the pond. So, did I like The Forgotten? Picture The tale is a ghostly, British haunt that shares the story of two teens. When it begins, you think it's about Tommy, the new kid. White, thin and a loner, he's easy pickings for the bullies of the block. It's when he meets Carmen that everything changes.

Tommy is sent to live with his dad after his mom goes to "visit her sister" for a while, with no explanation to her son. Tommy's struggles with his dad but he doesn't understand why. While living in an abandoned council estate (projects), Tommy begins to hear strange sounds from the flat next door to his. It frightens him. After befriending Carmen, they decide to investigate.

The story then makes a shift that I didn't see coming. It slowly walked me in to the storyline change, which was pretty good, but sad. I have to keep telling myself that foreign movies are very different from American. Some things aren't explained, and when they are, that doesn't mean I'll get it. With The Forgotten, there's explanation, but what lead to the understand sorta perplexed me. I liked the movie- don't get me wrong; I just wondered why the forgetting... And that's all the SPOILER you'll receive! lol

It's a tasteful movie, filled with teen angst and curiosity. I think anyone would like it, but it is a little slow. The action doesn't really kick in on the haunting till about halfway through. What you get before that is more than filler, but just not a great deal interesting. Check it out while I move on!

Tentacles: An Anthology

Science Fiction Monster Short Story Collection
by Haley Whitehall, Eva Lefoy & D. R. Larsson  Picture Sometimes I get books and I'm thrilled with the mystery, the ambiguity and even the baffling of it all. Then there's Tentacles. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to make of it.

It's a book of short stories, each one having carrying the theme of tentacles. I thought that was cool, unique and monstrous. What I got was, Tentacles. Don't get me wrong, one was completely amazing, (Solar Pioneer), but even it left me confused by the ending.

By the time I finished the book, I was hungry for a real science fiction thrill.

Check out Tentacles: An Anthology, if you dare. Me, I'm off to the next read.  Cheers!

An Omniscient Memoir, A Dark Retelling

A short story by A. Renee Hunt Picture It's finally happened- my indie status is growing! Today my third short story has released. I can't wait for you all to read An Omniscient Memoir, A Dark Retelling. I'm not giving a review of my own book, but I had to share it! #element-40dbf51c-255d-42c6-83a0-df6df8c6d4ba .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;} Picture Picture Thanksgiving 2017, my husband told me he had a surprise for me. He's normally not good at keeping secrets, but he managed to pull this one off rather well. Actually, he ended up needing my help on a few things- but I got to do nothing for 8 days but relax.

He kept telling me, "I want you to be inspired to write another story."
And I was. Picture He gifted me a trip to Georgia. Up, on the side of a mountain, we stayed for the holiday and An Omniscient Memoir came to be. Naturally, I dedicated the book to my magnificent hubby.

It's about a woman who discovers her husband's having an affair. She knew her marriage was on the rocks, but for him to go outside of their marriage was too much for her. She decided she would teach him a lesson on betrayal. What happens leaves her with a lesson of her own, and that sometimes revenge isn't the answer, no matter how good, or bad it feels.  She ends up in a bad way- and many may feel it was her just deservings.

I would really love to know what you think about it; I also hope you leave a review on Amazon! I feel it's one of my best stories yet! I truly believe you will too. Cheers- I'm moving on to my next book release!

Iloray: A Mermaid Story

*A novel by Mary Jane Capps Picture This is a story that takes you away from the norm. How often do you get to live under the sea? How often do you live the life of a ceasid- a princess at that! Well, in Iloray, A Mermaid Story, that's exactly what you get. There's royalty, conspiracy, war and betrayal , but because it's beneath the waves, the story carries a feel unlike any I've read in a while. #element-8f88ccae-e830-4d2a-9883-9336fd4bf129 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;} Picture Picture Iloray, A Mermaid Story is about Gryshen, a princess preparing to become leader. She doesn't want to princess; she's still daddy's little ceasid. In this world, first born becomes ruler then the matriarch passes away. The good thing is, they never really go when they die- they can still communicate!

There's a conspiracy on the rise and Cryshen's father passes away as it grows stronger than ever. She must become a warrior and lead her people to restore tranquility and peace amongst her people, as well as show the interloping pod, bearing the prince she'd once loved, that she will not fail her people.

Written by Mary Jane Capps , Iloray is an author with great potential. She took a world, few dare tread and made it near normal. It was beautiful and very imaginative. I enjoyed the read, but I have to admit, Gryshen was a bit disappointing!

I know it's because I'm such a "Independent Woman" - it even drives my husband how strong-hearted (and verbal) I can be. So anyway, Gryshen allowed someone to come right in and sweep her off her tail fin without any hesitation! She allowed herself to be used like Wham! Yes, I know it happens a lot in stories, but I was surprise with her. A princess should have more strength, and to be without any Fins in Waiting, she just acted without advice... but that's what the story was about. Her finding herself and the courage to do what she was born to do.

The romance was light, which I truly appreciated, because everyone knows it's gotta be a pretty big love story for me to dive right in. To me the love and war balanced just right, making it a fabulous read. So I shared what I thought was a bit off with Gryshen. Now for Cos.

I LOVED how he went out a villain. Sometimes there's no redemption. There's no being saved and no turning back. Simply stated, he was a bad guy and that was cool with me. I also liked Bravis. He was a bit mature, but he came off good for Gryshen from the very start. The triangle was light between the three of them, preventing cliché-ish situations. Thank goodness for that!

All in all, Iloray A Mermaid Story is top-notch with me. I'll share with anyone who's interested in other-worldly tales and something different. Check it out, while I move on to the next read.

Cheers!
