Awesome CQ Dystopian

From Goodreads:
Sixteen year-old Madeline has struggled with epilepsy for most of her adolescent life, leaving her something of a social pariah. Things go from bad to worse when she wakes up from her first grand mal seizure in an extremely unfamiliar world but surrounded but familiar faces. Her hometown is in ruins, the aftermath of a Cold War turned hot.

Thomas, the boy that stomped on her heart a year ago, and his brother Brandon have been hiding her away since the explosion that killed her parents. The Lord Commander, now running the southern territories, believes Madeline died with them and the brothers need to keep it that way. The biggest problem? The explosion happened when she was twelve.

Madeline isn’t sure what to believe. The brothers insist her memories must be of a dream life she created while in her coma. But when she returns to the reality she knows, they insist this war-torn world must be the dream. She doesn’t know if she’s truly caught in the middle of a brewing rebellion or teetering on the brink of insanity. As she finds herself flipping between the two lives, her heart becomes torn between two versions of the same boy and the lines between her realities begin to blur.

My Thoughts:
I've been meaning to read this book since it released, but my life has been too insane lately, as any of you know. With three books in edits and lined up for release (one that just released) plus having baby on the way, a lot of things slipped by me. But, catch up!
So, I read the first part when this was in submissions to help Mara. Mara is one of the best people when it comes to supporting other writers and being an awesome friend, so naturally I wanted to return the favor. I liked the beginning enough that when it released, I snatched it up.

So my overall thoughts.
This story starts strong, very, very, strong. The premise is intriguing, the characters catch the attention, and the writing is solid. It kept me glued.
But somewhere in the middle, I got a bit irritated with Madeline. During one of her times in the post-cold war reality, she started to bother me, and Hayden got on my nerves too. I think she came across as kind of too much of a pacifist considering her circumstances, and a bit on the whiny, and dangerously headstrong side.
But returning back to her original reality, she seemed to drop the annoying act and I started to enjoy it again.
I kind of saw the twists coming, but that's because I'm obnoxious and can almost always predict them! Ha ha! They were good though, and there are plenty left unresolved for the next installment.
Thomas... I never saw the appeal. But Brandon makes this book worth your time. In both realities he's strong, smart, and loyal to Madeline, even if she's oblivious to his real feelings. There's your typical teenage drama between them, ad I hope they can get over it in the next book.
Austin, I loved this guy from the start. I love the cocky guy in books, especially if he's also pretty nice. If he's awful, no, but Austin's nice and wants to help Madeline. I'm intrigued to find out how deeply he's interwoven into Madeline's life.
A fair warning, this does have a massive cliffhanger ending. If you don't like those, then just wait for the next book.

From Goodreads:

New York City, 2025: Everything is changed. The city that never sleeps is now a land of death and decay. A rampant virus has taken over and the survivors have become carriers, quarantined from the rest of the world.
Twist and Dodger grew up in the streets, the sewers and underground tunnels - their playground. They aren't heroes. They just like attention; and stealing meds from the rich and giving them to the poor is their golden ticket.
On their latest raid, they unknowingly steal a cure that puts them square between the ailing Emperor of Manhattan and the war hungry Governor of Brooklyn and forces them on a quest into the darkest shadows of their putrefying world.

My Review:
I've been dying to read this book since I saw the cover reveal. It definitely didn't disappoint. I loved Twist from the first page. While Dodger is exactly what you expect, an arrogant jerk, Twist is the exact opposite. I love that he hasn't been corrupted by the horrible world they live in, and still holds onto hope and compassion.
New York is a messed up place, and Dodger and Twist work hard to survive the best they can. Unfortunately for them, they get caught up in a game of life or death caused by the poor choices and greed of others. All throughout, the boys stay true to themselves, and most importantly, each other, even when things threaten to be torn apart.
I was a little disappointed by the end, until I saw it's book 1! Yay! I want book 2 now. I don't want to leave spoilers, but there's plenty left open and wanting to be resolved and uncovered

Meet Author Samanthya Wyatt and her New Release

Thank you, Katie, for having me on your blog.   Hello everyone. I write hot, sizzling romance. All I ever wanted was to see my book sitting on a shelf in the book store. I married a military man, traveled the world, raised a family and then we settled in the Shenandoah Valley. Once my children were grown, I decided it was time to act on my dream. As a beginner, I had so much to learn. I joined RWA, took workshops and gained a wealth of information. I grew as a writer. When I finally finished my first historical romance, I was thrilled to send it off with the hope, like everyone else, I wanted to be published. I entered contests. In 2013 The Right One, the first of my historical trilogy, finaled in The Golden Rose Contest.Even though my first love is historical, I also write contemporary romance. I signed my first contract with Soul Mate Publishing in 2013. Since then I’ve had four books published and a Christmas contemporary “A Hero Grinch for Christmas is due for release on December 1st. After those, I have a Fireman Series planned. As for my historical series, each of my books have a beginning and a romantically satisfying end for my characters happily ever after. Nothing is left hanging. I love the idea of a connection from a previous book so I thought it would be nice to write a series of books with a few familiar characters. In the first book of the series, “The Right One”, Katherine’s brother is missing. Book two, The True One, is Stephen’s story—why he was gone for two years, what happened to him, and a love story all his own. And now—book three.  Giles was introduced in the first book as Morgan’s best friend—the duke. In the second book, he is asked to rescue Kat’s brother, Stephen. The Only One is his love story.

A dangerous lord’s warning sparks devastating results
One impulsive kiss to prove the young girl flirted with danger shakes Giles’ firm resolve. The young American is wild and reckless, and before long he realizes, she’s too much to handle. He surrenders. A duke must adhere to his duty. His title demands his home is in England. Tormented with longing for the woman who branded his very soul, he forsakes nobility and returns to claim the love he has carelessly thrown away.
A girl’s determination triggers a woman’s desire
From the first moment Alexandria saw the duke she knew he would be hers. Determined to get the man she wants, she devises a plan, curbs her reckless nature, and presents the proper lady his nobility requires. The interference of her brothers disrupts her amours pursuit, yet the feisty girl seduces the lord with a woman’s passion, and brands the duke hers forever.

Amazon
I write because I enjoy it. And because I hope to give someone else the pleasure of a romance. Whether you want to escape reality or just live in the moment of fantasy, I hope you will enjoy a few hours of reading one of my books.
 From NIGHT OWL REVIEWS:
“Personally I think this is everything in reviewing a book as throughout my reading I could feel the author's heart and emotions driving the heroine in this story and this writing style is not only unique but so refreshing.”  LwyntersFor the full review, visit: http://www.nightowlreviews.com/v5/Reviews/Lwynters-reviews-The-True-One-by-Samanthya-Wyatt
With this review from Night Owl Romance, I’m thrilled to see I’ve accomplished my goal. All my characters are fictitious. Although, I have taken real life experiences to achieve the emotion for my heroes and heroines.

Guest Post: Woman's Best Friend

I was once asked why do I have such old dogs. That question got me to thinking. I suppose, looking back, I have had old dogs in my life. But they usually started out as puppies and ended up as dear old friends at the end.

There was Ruffian, the big blue merle collie I bought as a puppy, who only shared 12 years as my guardian and friend. There was Tasha, the Lhaso Apso. who I bought as a four year old dog. She was fourteen when aggressive cancer forced me to put her to sleep. I could never forget Kip, the stray  sable and white collie who adopted me. He was around 6 or 7 at the time. We shared 7 more wonderful years as friends until the day came he said he was ready to leave. Riley James, a lovely tri-color collie, was my sweet angel from birth until kidney disease took him away far too soon at 11 years old.
My precious baby Scrapper, whom my ex-husband bought as a six-week-old for himself, was always my little girl for seventeen years. She was a Papillion. It broke my heart when I had to put her to sleep just a few months shy of her 18th birthday.
This past March, I adopted another collie, a blue merle called Ty. He is around six years old, and came from a very horrible previous life. Our time together so far has been working past his PTSD issues and creating a bond between us. However fragile it is now, I already regret the day when it arrives that I will have to let this sweet, forgiving and trusting soul go to his final rest. So I suppose the answer to the question asked of me is simple: I have old dogs because I love the journey I get to take with them. My latest book 'Chasing the Painted Skies', releasing November 11 with Soul Mate Publishing also features a dog. He is a black and tan German shepherd called Salzburg. He shows up at a mysterious stray and becomes a fierce protector for one of the main characters, Raven Koynes.
Here is a short excerpt:
            * * *             “What's that?” Arthur demanded as Raven and Salzburg went inside.            “This is my dog, and you better be nice to him.” She rested her hand on his head, level with her thigh, and breathed a breath of relief as the dog lifted his lips to Arthur, showing a hint of his white teeth and growling softly. She could have dropped to the floor and hugged him again.            “Keep that mutt away from me,” Arthur warned.            “This dog goes where he wants to go,” Raven countered, her eyes sweeping the room. There was no sign of Sebastian. The chair he had been bound to before was empty, still with the ropes where he maneuvered out of them. The house, as she figured, was trashed. Huffing, she glared at Arthur, hands on her hips.            “Did you have to make such a mess? Well maybe now you can believe your stupid treasure isn't here. And what have you done with Sebastian?”            “I haven't done anything with him. Last I saw of him, he and Helen were headed outside.” He took a step toward her, raising a hand. “And mark my words that treasure is here.”            Salzburg flattened his ears, showing all his teeth, his growl deep and throaty. Barking once, he advanced, meeting Arthur's step. Arthur stepped back, lowering his hand.            “Keep that mutt away from me,” he warned. “Or else you'll be missing a dog as well as a boyfriend.”                       Suddenly anxious to put distance between them, Arthur left the room. Raven swept Salzburg into her arms. “Oh, thank you, dog! A hundred thank you’s. I can't tell you how much he creeps me out and to know he is scared of you, well, that's more priceless to me than all the Endeavor's supposed treasure. Come on, let's find you a soup bone.”* * *
Raven Koynes is a woman in hiding. Years ago she escaped to remote Gull Island Light Station, nestled far away in Lake Superior. She has carved out a life of peace and solitude for herself. Until famed nature photographer Sebastian Knight arrives--in the height of a nor'easter storm--to document the beauty of Gull Island. Unsavory treasure hunters also blow in with the storm, determined to find missing cargo from a sunken ship. And they're sure Raven knows where it's stashed. A power outage is a final threat, trapping everyone at her lightkeeper cottage.      Help arrives in the form of a stray German Shepherd Dog, who takes an immediate protective interest in Raven. He becomes her constant shadow and listening ear as she sorts out her growing--and conflicting--feelings for Sebastian.     Meanwhile, Sebastian came to the island looking for treasure as well, in the form of photographs, While he isn't so sure about a sunken boat and missing cargo, he only needs one look at Raven Koynes to know he's found his own valuable treasure. One he hopes he can hang on to once she learns about his mysterious secret.     Now that Madeline the resident ghost has found out, it's probably just a matter of time until Raven does too. And with the storm and power outage, no one is going anywhere any time soon.

EXCERPT:
"Don't let your tears flow," she insisted passionately from the screen. I glanced up and saw Roch and Nikole embracing while the KGB closed in on them. Slowly, a crescendo of brass arose as Roch and Nikole fought gallantly to their deaths. The credits began and I glanced at the clock. It was ten.
"What garbage," I laughed aloud, grinning at the thought of meeting Roch Turner the next afternoon. I turned off the television and stretched. Yawning, I walked into my bedroom. After doing one more double-check, I was satisfied I had not forgotten anything. I got ready for bed before climbing beneath my heavy, down comforter and closing my eyes. Sighing contentedly, I thought with excitement about seeing Heather for the first time in six months, skiing in the Rockies, and watching a hit sitcom being filmed. This is going to be the best Thanksgiving ever, I thought happily. pushing images of Rick from my mind.
As I succumbed to the tranquility of slumber, eagerly awaiting a much-needed vacation, I had no idea of the depth and complexity of the situation in which I would soon be enmeshed. I had no idea of the sheer magnitude of the vendetta in which I would find myself, a senseless dispute which began years before my own birth. If I had, I would have ripped my flight itinerary up into a million tiny pieces and stayed in the warm haven of my bed.

COLD AMBITION
"It was my life-long dream to become a private eye. Little did I know that with my very first case, that dream would become a life-threatening nightmare..."

My Favorite Undead CQ Titles

From Goodreads:
College sophomore Emma Roberts remembers her mother’s sage advice: “don’t sleep around, don’t burp in public, and don’t tell anyone you see ghosts”. But when cute Mike Carlson drowns in the campus river under her watch, Emma’s sheltered life shatters.

Blamed for Mike’s death and haunted by nightmares, Emma turns to witchcraft and a mysterious Book of Shadows to bring him back. Under a Blood Moon, she lights candles, draws a pentacle on the campus bridge, and casts a spell. The invoked river rages up against her, but she escapes its fury. As she stumbles back to the dorm, a stranger drags himself from the water and follows her home. And he isn’t the only one…

Instead of raising Mike, Emma assists the others she stole back from the dead—a pre-med student who jumped off the bridge, a young man determined to solve his own murder, and a frat boy Emma can’t stand…at first. More comfortable with the dead than the living, Emma delves deeper into the seductive Book of Shadows. Her powers grow, but witchcraft may not be enough to protect her against the vengeful river and the killers that feed it their victims.

Inspired by the controversial Smiley Face Murders, HOW TO DATE DEAD GUYS will appeal to the secret powers hidden deep within each of us.

My Thoughts:
Talk about all the feels! When I first met Mike, before he died, I soon decided I didn't WANT him to die. This is really early on, so I'm not giving out spoilers. So when he did, I was so sad! But meeting him, getting to know him a but made his death and the events that follow, believable.
Poor Emma. What a crazy series of events she faces in this book. She starts out reserved, kind of beaten down from her high school days and lacking in confidence. But as the book progresses, she changes and grows with each of the lessons the guys unwittingly teach her... some wittingly teach her too. Although she starts out thinking everyone hates her, she learns it's not true. Yes, Mike's brother blames her for his death, but although again she thinks everyone does, it's really just him.
Chrissy I want to beat over the head. Just saying. And Abby is a doll.
But each of the guys you develop a connection with. Each one has his own unique thoughts, feelings and situation he has to take care of, and Emma's there to assist them all, whether she wants to be or not.
All up, a great all around read. I loved it from start to finish, especially all the guys and how well rounded and believable they were. I'm anxious for the next book!

From Goodreads
When an undead woman with serious de-comp issues stalks sixteen-year-old Lyla Grimm, her hope of rescuing her rock-bottom reputation takes a back seat. Especially once Lyla’s new talent of resurrecting the dead draws the attention of Eric, a Grim Reaper with a guitar and a chip on his shoulder.
While Lyla navigates the gossip-ridden halls, Eric works to gain her trust and discover why Death’s clients aren’t staying down. If she passes on her gift, his death-messenger destiny might be altered. But the closer he gets to Lyla, the less sure he is of his plan. The dead are way easier to deal with than the living.

Gossip explodes, the Grimm family implodes, and desperation sets in. Death wants the gift and a soul. Lyla and Eric face hard choices with hidden consequences. Sometimes life’s choices aren’t really choices at all.

My Thoughts:***Note: I was the Acquiring Editor for this book***

Sixteen year old Lyla, is the daughter of the town mortician, and the family has been morticians for generations. When their cosmetologist quits and leaves her resignation painted in lipstick on a body, Lyla rushes in to fix it before all the guests arrive and see it.
But that night, the body vanishes. Everyone thinks it's stolen, and since Lyla is already a social outcast, the mockery at school intensifies.
She has one friend, Cassie, who stands up for her. She is also close to her older brother, Ben, who she sees as her protector. He, in contrast to her, is a cool, popular, lead singer of a band.
Then, the body reappears... reanimated!
A new band member soon appears in her brother's group. Eric seems disinterested in Lyla at first, but when she finds herself confronted with the walking body again, he saves her, and a friendship starts. Lyla even starts to develop feels for this mysterious new band member.
Talk about a great read! This is a fabulous YA read about a girl struggling with self-identity with everyone tearing her down, and things only getting worse as she discovers new things about herself and Eric. But she struggles on, despite the people she cares most about turning against her.
It's rather gripping, and the descriptions of the walking corpses are creepy and gross. I found myself wanting to keep reading, despite needing to sleep and live.

Amazon
***Full Disclosure: I was the Acquiring Editor for this book***

Sharon is an awesome storyteller. What I love most about this book is that the characters are so alive and even kind of nuts. They are dark wizards that want to be good, and so struggle with all their might to be good.

Destruction follows David, husband of Amanda, and father of teenagers Jude, Patrick, and Emmy. It's starts when David is called to tell him his long lost children, Xavier and Evangeline, have been found, but their mother, Crystal, has been murdered. He is to take custody of the two teens, that his wife knows nothing about.
When he brings them home, the expected hell breaks loose when his wife is furious about his affair from years before, and their children are furious at his betrayal. But the two new siblings reveal something about them which they didn't know; they are all dark wizards and witches.
The children all start acting out and using their new found powers recklessly.

This story is heartfelt and gripping. It's so human even as the characters struggle with their magical sides. With such a vast cast, Bayliss has done a fabulous job at keeping all their stories real and emotional. Through all their struggles and flaws you feel for them and hope they can resolve their problems.
I can't wait for the next book!

From Goodreads:
David Vandergraff lost his home, his job, and contact with his oldest son, but remains determined to be a good husband and father despite being a dark winter wizard.

His resolve is tested when a flyer for a missing girl--who happens to be a summer witch--begins to haunt him. David believes a spell needs to use him to save her, so he follows the magic's command and looks into her disappearance. His teenage daughter Emmy resents him for caring so much about a random stranger. But when she uncovers some disturbing evidence close to home, she begins an investigation of her own.

David and Emmy quickly learn that the mystery is not only about a missing girl they barely know, but a deeply personal story that impacts everyone they care about. As their world crumbles, they fear the warning may be true—never mess with summer wizards, because the good guys always win.

**Full Disclosure: I was the Acquiring Editor for this book.**

If you liked Destruction, you're going to love Watch Me Burn. The Vandergraff's are somehow holding together after all the revelations and pain from book 1. Together, they learn and discover more about their powers.
But most significantly, in WMB, we are introduced to summer wizards and the Prescotts, a summer wizard family. When the youngest daughter of the Prescott family goes missing, David feels a magical pull to find her, and soon, so do his children.
Meanwhile, Amanda has secretly been seeing their oldest son who was asked to leave after doing some down right stupid and dangerous things. Amanda is trying to remove the darkness from him, but the side affects are heart wrenching.
The kids are learning more and more about their powers, especially Patrick who finds he has surprisingly powerful abilities. He sees visions of the missing girl, among other things. Emmy goes looking for the missing girl and meets her brother, who she is unsure if she can trust or not since he is a summer wizard, but she is drawn to him anyway.
The plot twists and turns as the family find themselves drawn in, but distracted at the same time. David is desperately fighting to protect his family, while the four kids build stronger bonds and loyalty to one another that could save them.
I couldn't put this baby down! Bayliss takes the December People Series to a new level that you won't want to miss, and leaves you begging for the next installment.

Guest Post: Cars in her Novel by Linda O'Connor

Katie - Thank you very much for inviting me to your blog! In Perfectly Reasonable, Margo MacMillan spends a lot of time driving between the painting jobs and her volunteering at a local soup kitchen. She has some pretty strong ideas about the characteristics of a driver depending on what kind of car they drive. Whether it's a red car or yellow car:
Margo pulled into the parking lot of Paint and Putty, her favorite store in all of Rivermede. She parked her little red Mini-Cooper beside a red BMW and gave a wide berth to the yellow Pontiac. Red car people were the best. Most conscientious drivers, cautiously opened their doors to avoid dinging the car next to them, and followed a regular vacuuming schedule. The complete opposite of yellow car people. Honestly, they should have a separate area of the parking lot.
a green van:
Margo huffed out a breath and glanced at the clock on the dashboard. Just her luck to get behind a green van. She didn’t need the green-van treatment this morning. Her alarm had startled her out of a deep sleep, mainly because the deep sleep didn’t happen until three in the morning. She had burned her tongue on her coffee, her hair was a mess, and her brain still in a fog. She was going to have to make a detour for another coffee. And the brake happy, ‘it’s-such-a-nice-day-let’s-admire-the-scenery’ green van wasn’t even hitting the speed limit. Holy cow, could you drive any slower? She stared at the little stick figure drawings of a dad, mom, four children, dog, and two cats on the back windshield of the van. Great. Potentially four more green van people in the wings. Just what the world needed.
a shiny gray jeep:
Margo shook her head at the shiny gray jeep stopped beside her at the light. The shiny gray jeep with no doors. She’d seen it in the summer, but with temperatures a few degrees above freezing, she’d want doors. He didn’t seem to mind. With a tuque pulled down over his ears, a multicolored scarf blowing in the wind, rosy cheeks, and his thumbs tapping on the steering wheel to the hard rock bass blaring from his speakers, the driver looked pretty content. He glanced over and smiled, and Margo couldn’t help smiling back. You had to love those free-spirited drivers of no-door, shiny gray jeeps.
a white sedan, blue hatchback, black Suburban, orange Hummer, or lime green Beetle – they all have their own unique drivers. Margo loves her little red Mini-Coop, but the big question is – what kind of car does Trace drive? :D

Linda would LOVE to offer an e-copy of Perfectly Reasonable to someone who comments, and as a bonus, I'll throw in an e-copy of Deceptive Cadence too.

perfectly reasonable cover

Perfectly Reasonable (Book 2 Perfectly Series)

Love what you do and do what you love. Sounds perfectly reasonable, but chances are, you’ll find your passion in the last place you look . . . Video Book Trailer:

Linda O'Connor   Meet Linda O’Connor ~ Linda has been writing romance novels for four years and is very grateful to Debby Gilbert at Soul Mate Publishing for the ultimate encouragement to her writing - with the leap to publishing. She has many titles including Doctor, Mom, and proud Canadian, but “Linda O'Connor - hereinafter called the Author” is one of the sweetest. Contemporary romantic comedies are her favorite novels to read and write. Linda balances writing with her work as a physician at an Urgent Care Clinic and being a mom to three sons (luckily grown and capable of throwing together a decent meal, in a pinch). She also likes to keep active and cycle, cross-country ski, skate, walk, or dance every day. Laugh every day. Love every minute.

Book Blitz: A Curse of Ash and Iron by Christine Norris

A Curse of Ash and Iron
by Christine Norris
Release Date: May 21st 2015
Curiosity Quills Press

Summary from Goodreads:

Benjamin Grimm knows the theater is much like real life. In 1876 Philadelphia, people play their parts, hiding behind the illusion of their lives, and never revealing their secrets.

When he reunites with his childhood friend Eleanor Banneker, he is delighted. His delight turns to dismay when he discovers she has been under a spell for the past 7 years, being forced to live as a servant in her own home, and he realizes how sinister some secrets can be. She asks for his help, and he can’t refuse. Even if he doesn’t believe in ‘real’ magic, he can’t abandon her.

Ellie has spent the long years since her mother’s death under the watchful eye and unforgiving eye of her stepmother. Bewitched and hidden in plain sight, it seems no one can help Ellie escape. Not even her own father, who is under a spell of his own. When she sees Ben one evening, it seems he is immune to the magic that binds her, and her hope is rekindled along with her friendship.

But time is running short. If they do not find a way to break the spell before midnight on New Year’s Eve, then both Ellie and her father will be bound forever.
