Flashback Blog Hop

Before I starting taking my writing seriously, I had this blog so a few of my friends in Australia could read my stories. They'd read the ones I wrote growing up, and requested to see them again, so I typed them out and stuck them on here. Below in an introduction I wrote for one of these stories explaining the background and such for it.
Jan 25th 2012
For anyone who knows me you will know that I was a foreign exchange student after I graduated high school. It is convenient that the Australian and US school years don't line up as Aus runs from Feb-Dec and the US Aug-May. This makes it easy for this story to line itself up. This story is about a girl from Australia who is an exchange student in the US. I began writing it as an 11th grader as I sat and dreamed of jetting off and experiencing a new and exciting life, but soon gave up on it when I really was an exchange student and it never got finished.
Meanwhile, while I was on exchange the concept of Penny came into my mind. A part autobiographical, part fictional character who could express some of the trials I had gone through growing up while also living a fictional existence. So I changed the original character of this story to Penny. It suddenly gave it more depth and integrity and the story found new life. All the other characters around her suddenly seemed more real and alive, and new scenes and ideas seemed to be jumping into my mind.
So, although this story has some real life elements drawing from my experiences, most is fictional, using purely the feelings I had and the all character's new found lives which drew from people's experiences around me that I needed to put down on paper. As a result this story is very raw and honest and some people may see themselves or something they experienced, or they know I did or have happen to me in a slightly more extreme but still realistic manner within the story.
I hope I can express this story as it is intended and you can feel the feelings and life lessons I learned through these fictional characters.
This story is dedicated to the real people of which it is based, PHS class of '04 and SHS class of '05 and is for all the 1986ers out there. Also it's for my sister, may she learn from my mistakes and never have to deal with them herself, and always make the best choices because she deserves it.

Six Sentence Sunday 1/6/13
As the first Sunday of the new year, I have a lot to be excited about because... this is the year my debut novel is released! If you haven't been following my progress, Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh, book 1 of the Kiya trilogy, will be coming out in April.
So here is a sneak peek, an excerpt from Chapter 3 while she talks to the Pharaoh, her new husband.
I remembered Horemheb’s words to me – Make him love you, make him hold you in his highest regard – and I decided I would begin right then. “I was hoping for me you might make an exception. I am well educated after all, and can help you with many of your tasks. As your wife I would be a loyal and honest assistant.”He stared at me, confused for a few moments, before a small smile crept across his face. “Horemheb has trained you well..."

Cover Reveal - The Charge by Sharon Bayliss
*The New Year's Blog Hop is just below if you're here for that :-) *
One of my fellow CQ-ians, Sharon Bayliss, has given me the opportunity to be one of the people to be part of her cover reveal for her novel The Charge. So with no further ado, here it is -
What is The Charge about?
It's the story of an alternate world where the Republic of Texas never joined the Union and instead became a monarchy where the royal family have superhuman powers.
What if Texas never joined the United States, and instead became it's own nation? In The Charge that's exactly what happened. In the 1830s, the Republic of Texas was taken over by a dictator with superhuman powers who named himself the first King of Texas. Eighty years later, the Texas Empire has fallen into ruin, but the story of the Texas royal dynasty is far from over. College freshman Warren King wants nothing more than to enjoy a beer by the pool on his summer break...but that's not what fate has in store for him. When Texas soldiers kidnap his little brother, he embarks into a still-wild West to save him. While fumbling through a search attempt in the lawless Texas Empire, he makes a discovery that changes his life forever. He and his brother are estranged members of the Texas royal family and the King wants them both dead. Now Warren must save his brother and choose whether or not to be King, follow a King, or die before he can retire his fake ID.
Why is this cover a good visual aid for the novel?
This is an image of a "Blue Storm", supersized supernatural storms that plague the Empire of Texas. Here is the excerpt the cover is based on:
A thunderstorm brewed on the horizon . . . not a normal thunderstorm. The clouds towering above the Earth were a deep black, pulsing with lighting flashes that looked almost blue. Warren's heart skipped a beat as he saw a dark-haired man appear at the top of the stairwell outside the room. But it was just Jack. He opened the door, letting in mosquitoes and the earthy smell of the impending storm, and handed them greasy looking brown bags. Lena pulled back the foil and sniffed."Just eat it," Jack said before she could comment."What's the deal with those clouds?" Warren asked Jack."Thunderstorm," Jack said simply.Jack moved next to Warren and peered out at the storm like he was looking at a complex mathematical equation. He opened the window. The air that blew in had already grown colder. Jack put his hand out the window and waved it around like he was searching for a lost object in water."Does it feel different to you?" Jack asked Warren.Warren nodded. Jack looked back at the sky and looked . . . scared. It made Warren even more freaked out than he already was. Jack didn't seem to ever have any emotions about anything, so if he was worried about this, it was something to be worried about."Dear god," Jack said. "That son of a bitch did it.""Who did what?" Warren asked."Never you mind," Jack said."I think I can feel it, too," Lena said. "The wind feels prickly. Is that normal?”Jack continued to stare at the storm. "Severe weather is more common in Texas because of the Blue Energy in the air impacting the climate," Jack said. "But that is not normal."The more Warren looked at the storm, the more terrified he felt. He couldn't say why, but this one evoked a feeling in him that would have fit more with seeing black smoke towering over his home or a mushroom cloud. It was a sign of something bad. The core of the storm was so dark it could have been a hole in the sky where he could see deep space peeking through. The edges were bluish purple, like a bruise. The lighting was hitting the ground now and it definitely was . . . blue. It didn't hit in single strikes, but spanned large portions of countryside in a web of spindly fingers."When I was a kid, I remember my mom telling me that the Wildes created the storms," Lena said. "I always pictured a guy in a cloud shooting lighting out of his hands, like Zeus.""Yeah, well, you were a kid," Jack said. "I think that a lot of Americans still think that."
About The Charge -
The Charge was a quarterfinalist for the 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award and won a Publisher's Weekly review: "A solid cast of well-developed characters, including a “super-tall” royal Texan family, stars in this thrill ride of a novel teetering between sci-fi adventure and alternate historical epic...Easily shifting between characters’ perspectives, and relentless in its action, well-placed humor, and suspense, this manuscript is a delight." The Charge will be available in digital and print formats from Curiosity Quills Press on Texas Independence Day, 3/2/13. Go to www.facebook.com/thechargebook for updates. New Year's Blog Hop

So most of my New Year's traditions revolve around partying. January is nice and warm in Sydney, so staying out late in jeans and a T-shirt is the way to go! I don't think I can remember a year when we just stayed at home. We were always at some party or another, and usually a little sunburnt too. There would always be a TV somewhere with the Sydney Harbour fireworks playing - which if you haven't seen them, go on youtube and do it!! I'd also recommend London's fireworks.
This New Year is an exciting one for me. This year my debut novel Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh is being released! It's the first in the trilogy based on Naomi, who becomes a Queen of Egypt and given the royal name of Kiya. She faces many dangers in the palace, especially among the Pharaoh's harem and other members of the royal family who seek to destroy her when the Pharaoh proclaims that she will bear him his heir. Naomi has to outwit everyone around her to stay alive, but she has a heart full of love which she must keep guarded or risk losing those she loves. Kiya is due to be released in April, so follow me on twitter or here to be kept updated.
So my giveaway? I'm going to send my favourite Terry Pratchet book - The Wyrd Sisters.
The Grand Prizes for the event are as follows -

Six Sentence Sunday 12/30
I've been thinking all week about what six I should use. Finally, I decided I'd pick six from one of my oldest MS's, Dancing in the Athenian Rain. I first wrote it when I was seventeen, and it has been through one rewrite since then, and I'm about to start another rewrite on it soon, after some awesome feedback from Leigh Statham. This is a story that has held my heart since the very beginning, and has remained as my favorite MS over the years.
So, on to the good stuff! Eighteen-year-old Donna, who is the epitome of an Aussie stereotype in appearance - sandy hair, blue eyes, splattering of freckles across her nose - wakes up to find herself in Classical Athens where she stands out like a sore thumb. She doesn't know a lick of the language and only has a vague understanding of the culture from her high school history classes. The locals call her an "Amazonian Warrior" because of her strange appearance and speech. She is at risk of being put to death for this, until the young nobleman and soldier, Peleus, steps in...
I scurried toward the window and he rushed after me, grabbing me by the waist. “No, no, Amazon.” I struggled against him, but he held me tighter the harder I fought. I soon began to cry, and stopped fighting. His arms loosened, but he held me up as I cried out of pure desperation. He lifted me and sat me back on the bed as I cried into my hands.

Why Do You Write?
This is part of a blog hop I was tagged in by Aeriela Bronson. So to answer the question, why do I write?
Well I just want to. I've always dreamed up fanatical alternate realities, and my first story Iwrote was when I was twelve, and that story which was around 25,000 words turned into a four book series I wrote in my early teen years. Since then I just wrote down all my daydreams and such. During my 9-12th grade exams where we were crammed into the freezing cold (mid year) or sweltering hot (end of year) school hall, I would do my exam, and instead of leaving when I was done I'd sit and write down my daydreams. I lived a busy life with being involved in several sports, church, school and state choir, plus all the insane school work my "academically selective" high school forced us to do and of course my vice, boys, so the few minutes at the end of my exam time slot was a perfect quiet time to do something I enjoyed but rarely had time to do.
So now I have a kid I have 2-3 hours each afternoon of quiet time to write and I love it! After several years of not doing any, since having my little one, nap times have given me the opportunity to get back into it. I started by typingup old ones as I hand wrote all of them up until recently, then I finished unfinished works, then I worked on old ideas that never took. ie. the Kiya series.
So, I love doing it. While I drive and walk and everything else I do, I run my characters around with me, letting them talk to me and keep me company and also give me adult conversations in my head (not out loud, I'm nto completely crazy) when I only have a two year old to talk to.
So if you want to do this, just send me your link and I'll attach it at the bottom of this post!
Now,
1. go post your answer to “Why do you write” on your own blog.
2. Link to my answer and
3. then leave a comment linking to your blog post.

Six Sentence Sunday 12/23
Today I'm going to post six from my current WIP, Deceptive Cadence. Cadence, the MC has been sent back eleven years earlier to be fourteen again. She is at a school dance with her best friend, Geri, and Geri dares her to dance like a Britney Spears video clip for five bucks. So she does, and catches the attention of a bad boy who she never interacted with in her previous timeline...
I spun and saw a guy from the grade above us pull back and smirk at me. Behind him his friends burst out laughing. I grabbed Geri’s arm and blushed. “Let’s go somewhere else.” “Hey, where you goin’?” he called after me. “We just barely got started!”

The Next Big Thing
I was tagged for this blog hop by Aeriela Bronson. So since I'm not one to really go on much, I'm just going to tell you this is going to have 2 stories: One which is signed and one which I'm looking at maybe querying soon.
HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS - Ten Interview Questions for The Next Big Thing:
What is the working title of your book?- Kiya: Hope of the Pharaoh- Branded
Where did the idea come from for the book?- Ancient History class in high school. We were studying the late 18th Egyptian Dynasty and I was just fascinated with all the people.- This one started with an English short story. We were given a picture of an open field with canola's in full bloom. It was beautiful and serene, so I threw dead bodies in it and made a twenty-something girl who is being hunted fall into them. HA! My teacher thought I was a sadist and sent me to see the school councilor.
What genre does your book fall under?- NA Historical Romance- NA Suspence Romance
Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?- Ahh... the only actor I can actually see in this as a movie is Djimon Hounsou -
Here's the thing, he'd only play like a ten second role at the very beginning as the Nubian soothsayer! But, when I wrote that scene I totally pictured him as the character.But... now that I'm googling African male actors (Egyptians were dark skinned so the actors would naturally have to be of African descent) I think this man, Joe Morton, looks similar to how I pictured Ay according to the statues and art work which I found of him.
Also now that I'm looking, this particular picture of Rose Byrne screams Mordad.
So, I know that's not my biggest characters, Naomi/Kiya, Malachi, Akhenaten and Horemheb, but I just kind find anyone whom I think matches them.
- Now for Branded. For Ali, the MC I think Teresa Palmer would work really well. She's naturally pretty and can kick butt when she wants to, and Ali's Aussie so naturally an Aussie actress is necissary.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?- Naomi is taken from her Hebrew home in the place of her sisters and becomes a wife of the Pharaoh Akenaten, where her life becomes a fight to stay alive.- Her country has been invaded, and Ali finds herself the target of the conquering General after she escapes a death sentence right under his nose.
Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?Kiya is being published with Curiosity Quills.Branded is still up in the air, but I won't self-pub
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?Oh... hmm... both of them probably about a month from start to finish once I stopped throwing the ideas around in my brain for several years.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?Ah Kiya? I'm not really sure.Branded is definitely comparable to the Tomorrow When the War Began series in a NA format.
Who or What inspired you to write this book?- Ah... my Ancient History lessons...- I have no idea actually. I'm just secretly violent.
What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?- Kiya has a lot of passion and love on many different levels, romantic, family, respect. It's very human.- Branded makes you question what you see around you, and makes you see that not everyone fits a stereotype and a hero can come from the most unlikely of places.
And I tag....

Six Sentence Sunday 12/16
Here we are again for the Six Sentence Sunday! I'm going to do a little teaser for Kiya: Mother of a King which is book 2 of the Kiya series. In this scene the Hebrews of Thebes are practicing an annual festival when the Egyptians arrive to force them to stop.
Suddenly a stone flew across and hit Smenkhkare in the side of the head. A terrified silence fell. We watched him turn and gaze in the direction the stone had come from, as blood ran down the side of his face.
“Who did that?” he bellowed, before tossing the girl aside. He started marching toward the crowd which pushed back in fear, and I saw among them was Malachi and his brothers with their families and my children. I became fearful when I saw the defiant expression on Malachi’s face, telling me it was him.
There you go!!! Does it leave you wanting more? Keep a look out for Book 1 to be released early 2013 with Curiosity Quills.
