“Who cares anyway if I die? I hate my life; I curse the day I was born,” said Candace as she rolled out of her twin bed to face yet another day of sheer disappointments. Her feet landed on the beige, shaggy, dirty carpet that had seen better days.  As she sat on the edge of her bed, she looked around the small apartment as though she was expecting to see something different, but nothing had changed.
“Lord, can I get a break? Can something good happen in my life?” she cried as her head collapsed in her hands. She knew within herself that today would be like all the rest: gloomy, sad, and most of all, lonely. After all she had experienced in life, how could she think today would be any different?
Candace lived in a small studio apartment off of School Street in the city of Pittsburg, California, a city surrounded by the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area.  Her apartment had enough room for only one dresser and a nightstand, which she got at the neighborhood Goodwill store.
The walls of her apartment were dirty from years of cigarette smoke that didn’t escape out of the window. Her kitchen table was made of plywood, which she covered with a red tablecloth. The table was encompassed by two chairs, one for her and the other one she had hoped would be occupied by someone who genuinely wanted to be with her. The blue and cream décor in her kitchen came from visiting the neighborhood garage sales.  Her neighbors knew her so well because of the frequent visits she made to their sales. Although Candace always had a roof over her head, she did not like the environment in which she lived. After looking intently at her dwelling place, she lay back on her bed and stared at the ceiling. Her thoughts shifted from her disappointing apartment to her anger about the issues she had to deal with, problems that had been with her for years, issues with her family.
Since high school, life was hard for Candace. Almost every decision she made never retuned a good dividend. The men in her life came and went, except for Derrick.  He stayed the longest, but his bout with kidney failure ended whatever dreams she had of getting out of what she called the “ghetto.” Derrick was her sure ticket to a better life, she’d hoped. The only consolation to his memory was the pictures on the stained walls and a locket she wore around her neck.
Candace grew up with both parents and two siblings. Her sister, Monique, was three years younger than her; her brother, Zach, was two years younger. Candace always felt that she got the worse end of the stick when it came to Monique. Monique was light-skinned with long, black, wavy hair, which belonged to her, by the way. Candace’s skin tone was a few shades darker than Monique’s. She was short in stature, five feet, three inches tall, to be exact. She wore her hair down and straight, although it mostly contained black hair extensions, which she bought from the neighborhood beauty supply store.
Monique was the image of her mother, minus a few inches of hair. She stood five feet, eleven inches with a small frame; she could have been chosen as America’s Next Top Model. But Monique decided to study law, passing the bar on her first attempt; she then started her own practice and moved it to Los Angeles.  Monique and her parents could not figure out why Candace didn’t make more of herself. To them, Candace was merely existing and taking up space.  They wrote Candace off years ago.

My review. This is a Christian novel which didn't come across too preachy. Good characters were battered by problems in life, and had to learn to deal with those problems. But they learned they didn't have to do it alone.

My review. I give this book a five star review. I loved it. Peter is swept into a world of dragons. On his adventure he meets some friends, watches a dragon egg hatch, and faces danger with bad guys. Great characters and vivid descriptions makes this story come to life. I look forward to more adventure with Peter and his friends.

My review:  I give this book a five star review. I loved it. This book may be a children's book, but as an adult I loved it. Zoe and Zak are such great characters. They go on another great adventure. I can't wait to read book three. Thanks, Lars for a good read.

Becca’s steps slowed as she approached Processing 117. The floodlights of the parking lot shone down on her, exposing her. Past the lot, the darkness threatened to close in. There was no other source of light nearby except for the dim glow of the streetlamps, nothing but trees for at least a mile in every direction.The concrete structure loomed taller than its five stories—maybe because of the invisible presence of the underground levels, or maybe because in a moment Becca was going to have to walk inside.Heather can’t have been arrested. If she were a prisoner, they wouldn’t have let her call.But when Becca remembered the panic in Heather’s voice, the thought wasn’t all that reassuring anymore.Becca took the last few steps across the not-quite-empty parking lot. Heather’s not a dissident.Which led Becca back to the question that had been circling through her mind since she had gotten Heather’s call. What was Heather doing here?The receptionist turned away and tapped something out on her keyboard. It only took her a few seconds to find what she was looking for. She typed in something else and touched her earpiece. “We have a detainee in temporary holding,” she said to someone Becca couldn’t see. “Last name Thomas. Her file says she’s waiting for a relative to collect her. Right, that’s the one. Someone forgot to collect her phone, and she called a friend.” A pause. “No, that won’t be necessary. Just confiscate the phone.”She turned back to Becca. “Heather Thomas is waiting for her guardian to arrive. Are you Lydia Thomas?” She gave Becca a skeptical once-over.Becca considered saying yes, but even if the receptionist weren’t going to ask for proof, there was no way she could pass as Heather’s… aunt, she remembered after a moment. Aunt Lydia, the one who always looked at Becca and Heather like being in high school was catching.The receptionist took her silence as an answer. “I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”Becca wanted nothing more than to do just that. But she couldn’t leave and let this place swallow Heather. “If she’s waiting for her aunt to get here, I can wait with her until she shows up.”“I’m sorry,” said the receptionist, already turning back to her computer. “The policy is clear. The detainee will remain in temporary holding—alone—until her guardian arrives.”Becca was losing ground. And somewhere in this building, Heather was waiting for her. “I’m not trying to take her home or anything. I only want to…” To make sure she wasn’t locked away underground. To make sure they hadn’t gotten her mixed up with somebody else, some dissident slated for execution. “…to let her know I’m here. I promised her I’d—”“Your refusal to leave the building when instructed will be recorded.” The receptionist placed her hands on her keyboard. “May I have your name?”“At least tell me what happened. Why is she here? Is she all right?”“Your name, please,” the receptionist repeated.If she stayed much longer, the receptionist would order the guards to drag her out—or worse, in. She could end up in one of those underground cells… She shivered. They couldn’t do that to her just for asking about Heather, right?“Your name,” the receptionist repeated again, with a glance toward the guards.Becca slumped. “Rebecca Dalcourt.”The receptionist blinked.“Well,” she said, her voice suddenly warmer, “I suppose we can make an exception.” My review: I give this book a five star review. But you know what's right. And you have to remind yourself of that. Becca's mother told her. Did Becca really know what was right? She had some hard choices to make. And it wasn't always easy for her to do the right thing. Enjoyable, intense read.

My Review of Deviltry Afoot by Carol Pritt

 
Blurb: Seeking justice for her daughters murder Tina must seek answers in the supernatural realm. Terror is spreading over Pendale. Love is pitted against a dreadful force.
 My review. Carol creates a balance between the paranormal world and the normal world. The bond between a mother and her child can reach even beyond the veil.

Deep into an uneasy dream Tina’s face was twisted in consternation.
Dan hadn’t stayed over this evening. She’d told him she needed time to gather strength and come to grips with what lay ahead.
He’d looked hurt. She knew he could not understand her need to be alone at such a time.
He offered to sit up with her all night.
She told him she was wrung out; she would be able to sleep a bit.
She longed to fall into unconsciousness and to block all thought.
Her bedroom felt airless.
The little clock on her nightstand seemed to have a very loud tick tonight. The dials revealed it to be 1:00 pm.
Still asleep Tina shifted her weight to lie on her back.
Her heavy cotton nightgown became bunched up under the small of her back.
Suddenly she brought up her hands folding them over her chest in the position that the dead are laid out.
Beads of sweat broke out on her face, although the temperature in her room was a cool sixty-four degrees.
She was carrying groceries to her car in a dark parking lot.
Behind her there was a small convenience store. It was lit up. The buildings light stopped at the front of the building.
Tina tossed her bag of groceries into the passenger side of the seat. Just as she lifted her leg to get in behind the wheel she thought of her mother. She’d yell up a storm if she could see her now. As a teen Tina was lectured countless times about getting into a car alone. First check out the back seat to make sure no one was lurking there, she could still her mom stress.
Tina sat her leg back down on the pavement. She opened the back door. All clear.
She slid into the front seat closing her door and rolling down her window most of the way.
Glancing out her open window she began to shake all over.
Two hands with long tapered fingers suddenly grasp the window!
As if in slow motion a hooded figure raised itself!
Her door was flung open wide.
It pushed her backward sending her sprawling across the seat.
She was immobile from fear.
The thing lowered itself to her feet.
It covered her with its form inch by inch.
Its dark cloak was spread wide to enfold her completely.
Her heart thumped so hard she felt ready to pass out praying she would.
It was up to her head now.
Tina was so cold it was as if she were entombed within a block of ice
The smell of decay surrounding her was so rank she couldn’t catch a good breath.
The hood slipped back a bit. She couldn’t decipher its features clearly. She could only make out black pinpoint eyes.
Drool oozed from its mouth. A great gob of spittle plunked down on her forehead.
She let out a scream.
She thought she’d cried out, and awoken.
It was actually only phase two.
Still dreaming she thanked the Lord that it was only a nightmare.
Lights flickered from the traffic through her drapes.
Something in the room didn’t feel right.
The sheet was shifting downward of its own accord.
Two hands grasp the foot of the bed as a cloaked figure crawled up and over her!
She surrendered herself up to it.
She was entirely passive until sirens from a passing rescue unit brought her to an actual waking state ending her ordeal.
Rest would elude her the remainder of the night. She sighed and got up from the bed.
First light would signal the start of her greatest trial.
She must commend her only offspring to eternal rest.

My Review Of Be Happy By Aisa Ross

Be Happy, the first of the "BE" series,  is a book written in a straight-talk fashion, quickly delving into the heart of the matter--How to live our days better and happier, with purpose and direction.  Also, this short book contains massive information on the psychology behind people's self-sabotaging behaviors and negative thought patterns.

PREVIOUS PSYCHOLOGICAL AND/OR PHYSICAL TRAUMA WITHIN OUR BRAIN
 
Injury sustained inside our brain is the most difficult to diagnose and to treat.  In the case of motor vehicle accidents or physical traumas, physicians have the advantage of background information as to what happened.  In turn, they can automatically activate an emergency plan of treatment, such as a stroke protocol, CT scan, medications, and observation via in-patient hospitalization.
 
However, most of us are what can be classified as “the walking wounded.” We have unresolved psychological traumas and/or untreated brain injuries.  To function or cope with daily living, we subconsciously self-medicate to soothe or to provide the missing chemicals that our brain requires.  Our irresponsible behaviors and/or addictions are symptoms.  It’s a cry for help.  However, when we do seek treatment, we often focus on the symptoms and neglect the source of our sufferings.
 
First example:  EATING DISORDER
 
Please, let’s not rely solely on suggestions from diet/health books to lose weight or to overcome anorexia.   I agree that they are necessary materials because of the important information they provide.  However, first, we must bravely ask ourselves these questions:
a)    What is causing this restlessness?
b)    What is my body/mind asking me to take care of?”
 
The answer might be that we must join a survivors’ support group or speak to a therapist.  This is a situation that we cannot “tough it out, just be disciplined, and/or get over it!”
 
Let’s be kind to ourselves and give voice to our sorrows.
 My review. I found this book to be informative. "The greatest treasure in life is - loving one's self." I agree. There is no getting away from yourself, so you need to love yourself. Aisa explains each topic in the book in her own simplistic way.
