When I was abandoned by my parents and taken in by a pack of wolf shifters at the age of four, I’d never have imagined that this was where it would lead me. Hunched over on all fours, cleaning the blood-covered, rough stone floor of a prisoner cell.
At least, I thought the thick, black, tar-like substance was blood. I glanced down at where the black matter clung to my fingers and grimaced when it made a thin web as I spread them apart.
Sighing deeply from exhaustion, I wrung out my rag into the bucket of water that was now a murky grey color. I repeated the process what felt like a thousand times, until the floor was clear of the blood-slime, and ambled to my feet gingerly.
My back groaned in protest as I straightened, feeling stiff from the cold air blowing through the network of underground cells, in combination with being hunched over for so long. A dull ache thrummed through my lower back and into my tailbone, making me wince.
“I will never understand why you put up with the shit they make you do, Kira. You’re not a torture clean-up crew. You’ve been down here practically all day.”
How did he manage to always sneak up on me?
The deep rumble of Milo’s voice behind me made that ache in my back disappear, and then reappear between my legs for an entirely different reason. Him acting protective of me was quite possibly the sexiest thing I’d ever experienced. Okay, no—it definitely was.
Turning around, bucket in hand, I slammed into a stone wall of muscle, not expecting him to be that close, and the breath whooshed out of me on impact. His scent lingered, swirling around me while teasing that ache and turning into an insistent throb of need. He always managed to smell like a bonfire, the smokey wood scent making me want to curl up in his lap on a cold night—or anytime really.
Neither of us moved, both hesitant to even breathe. We had toed the line of this attraction between us for years, and I’d likely combust soon with the amount of sexual tension that sizzled between us incessantly.
Daring to tilt my chin up, I found his large blue eyes, framed by dark lashes thick enough to make any girl jealous, staring deep into my own. It always felt like we were looking past the surface in these moments. Like we could sense each other’s fears, hopes, and insecurities. As if each of our deepest secrets were suddenly on display for the other to bear witness.
Willing myself to find the words to once again express why I felt it okay to be the pack’s grunt, even though he’d never accept my reasoning, I reached up with my empty hand to lay it against the dark stubble of his sharp jawline.
I’m the outcast here. The human taken in by a pack of wolves. I was just a child when I was found, close to death with hypothermia overtaking me. I didn’t have many options.
After thinking about it, I refused to give him the spiel again. He’d heard it a million times. “You know why. I’m the only human here,” I looked at him imploringly so he’d drop it.
He leaned his forehead against my own and whispered to me. The ends of his short curls tickled my skin, making me shiver.
“You still deserve better. Human or not. You are not any lesser than us, despite what they’ve made you believe.”

MY THOUGHTS:
When I first started reading this story, not going to lie, I thought I might have stumbled into something a little too raw to read. I'm SO glad I pressed on. There are rough areas to read, and absorb, because the content is honestly difficult. However, the overall story is amazing. One of the great things about fiction is it allows an author to explore worlds of “what if?” No, the consequences of the main character’s actions in Redemption Island weren’t handled in any kind of traditional way, but the growth of the characters is something to behold. Dunbar’s concept also makes the reader wonder how the world could change if crimes were dealt with in new and exploratory ways. Go ahead, read it, you know you want to...
Unless you trigger easily, then, you might want to skip this one.

Arthur followed Rhona to the well. “I’d be grateful if ye’d pour a bit of water over my hands.”

“Ye’ve had practice,” he said, rubbing his hands clean.

Ivor and I were only married a year, and he’s been gone so long, his memory is fading. I suppose it was difficult at first, but now I have Gran to look after and my patients, of course.”
“And you enjoy your work?”
Rhona’s apron fell away as she gripped his hands. “I do. Being a healer gives me a sense of purpose.”
“Just being yourself is purpose enough for me.”
She took a step nearer and raised her chin. “Ye oughtn’t remove your shirt when visiting a…um…widow.”

The lass was too conflicted and until she reconciled her loyalties, she would not love him as much as he loved her. No matter how much he wanted to bend his knee and ask the question to make her his, he mustn’t push her. “I’ve been away from my post for long enough. I must be heading back.”
As he released her, she stepped away. “Now?”
He bowed. “My thanks for an enjoyable afternoon spent in your company, mistress. Mayhap we can sing another round of ‘The Twa Sisters’ again soon.”
With that, he straightened and walked away. It took a will of iron, but Arthur did not look back.

Changing directions, I strode over to his table, tapped him on the shoulder and waited for him to look up.

“Yeah,” I said, crossing my arms. “You need to leave. Now.”
Chase blinked. “What?”
“The library is a place for learning, and you’re causing a ruckus.”
“Ruckus?” he repeated then shook his head. “I don’t understand.”
“I can’t be any clearer. You’re disturbing the peace. No one can concentrate.” I put some authority into my voice, then said, “I’m going to have to ask you again to leave.”
Chase tilted his head. “Is this a joke?” he asked. “Did Baylor put you up to this?”
I couldn’t control my eyeroll. “No, your dumb, panty-thieving twin didn’t put me up to anything.”
“Well, I was just reading.”
“Doesn’t matter,” I said. “You have to go.”
Chase leaned back, really looking at me now. “Do you work here or something?”
Refusing to let him see me fidget, I put a hand on my hip.
“No,” I said.
“Then technically,” he said, “you can’t make me leave. Can you?”
“But—”
“I’m on good terms with Blanche,” he said, giving a nod to the librarian, who sent him a smile and fluttery wave in return. “She’d never throw me out. This has been fun, but I should get back to my book.”
I stared him down, determined not to leave until I’d had my full say.
After a few seconds, Chase sighed then looked up again.
“Is there something else?” he asked.
“Yeah, there is,” I said, pointing a finger at him. “First, would it kill you to be more pleasant? I thought you were supposed to be the nice brother.”
Chase shut his book carefully and gave me his full attention. “Like you were being so nice a second ago?”
I sniffed. “My behavior isn’t in question. You’re the one making it difficult for everyone else to study.”
“How am I doing that?”
“Ask the three girls sitting over there,” I said, giving a nod in Delia, Sandy, and Tamara’s direction. “They haven’t shut up since the moment you walked in. It would help if you’d stop throwing out all of these signals.”
“I was just reading my book!” Chase exclaimed.
I pointed at him again. “Yeah, in this super-hot way with your baseball cap pulled low and your forearms flexing every time you turn a page. I mean, seriously. How are the women in the room supposed to keep their minds on learning with all that going on?”
