Robert Wauchope came from a prominent Edinburgh family. He pursued a career in the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of admiral. This career involved him in the Napoleonic wars (later he was to met Napoleon on St Helena), and in combating the slave trade.

Of note, he was the inventor of the time ball, a device used to signal the correct time to nearby ships. From the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century these devices were found in every harbour of any major trade route.
