Superman

I don’t know what’s going on in this panel … but I’m reasonably certain Superman’s being a jerk about it.

Guardians Vol 2 (Ooga-chaka, ooga-ooga)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is like a million count crayon box with a whole buncha heart.  Vol 1 was one of those rare gems that very little will top–including its successor–but anybody who dug the first one won’t be disappointed by the second.  And you’re definitely gonna leave the theatre with a big ol’ dumb grin on your face.

A lawn dart from hell …

This monster of a branch fell from one of my trees yesterday and imbedded into the ground like a lawn dart from hell.  I’m not saying it takes the courage of Batman to mow my yard … but it at least takes the courage of Booster Gold.

An old geek

The new dude playing Spider-Man admits to never having seen the original Star Wars trilogy.  For some reason, that makes me feel really freaking old.

Ghost in the Shell

[image error]There aren’t many anime I gravitate towards.  I generally don’t like the way they’re paced or the tone is inconsistent (super-serious and mature one moment and very childish the next).  I recognize what they do and that many of them do it well.  It’s just simply not my thing.

There are a couple however that I really dig, such as Cowboy Bebop and–as you might have guessed–Ghost in the Shell.  I’ve been excited about seeing this live-action adaptation since I heard of its release and, I’ve gotta say, I thought the movie was really well done.  The action is pretty and fun.  It captures the philosophy of the story without overstaying its welcome.  And, above all, the filmmakers did a great job Westernizing the story without losing any of the essential Ghost in the Shell elements.  It’s a shame that it’s not doing well in the U.S.

If you’re on the fence, get off.  Go see it.

Sir Apropos of Nothing

I’ve always dug Peter David’s work, and the Apropos books are some of his best. This one is no exception … it’s a great and fitting addition to the series.  If you haven’t had a chance to read the other books yet, I envy you for what’s in store.  Check’em out.

John Wick, Chapter 2

The amount of heart in the first JW is what made the movie so suprisingly awesome. Chapter 2 doesn’t really have that, but the story is still interesting, engaging and–ultimately–fulfills its purpose: to give the protagonist a reason to shoot people in the coolest way possible. Fans of the first JW should definitely check out the second and–like me–will inevitably  look forward to the third.

RIP Bill Paxton

Hard to believe he’s gone. His energetic performances trasncended film and worked their way into pop-culture lexicon.  My heart goes out to his family.
