Fukushima Masami, along with Katō Kyō, were the pen names of the science fiction editor, author, critic, and translator Masami Katō. Also known as the Demon of SF. He was the first editor and chief of SF Magazine in Japan, which he used as a vehicle to popularize the genre in Japan.

Kato studied at Nihon University from 1945-1950 when he transferred to Meiji University earning a major in French literature there. He dropped out in 1954 and began to study translation under Shunji Shimizu (清水俊二 Shimizu Shunji) and writing children's literature under Tatsuzo Nasu (那須辰造 Nasu Tatsuzō).

In 1956, Fukushima was invited to join Hayakawa Publishing Corporation (早川書房). The following year, he initiated the Hayakawa SF series and in 1959 founded SF Magazin
