Rise of the Shadow Stealers Review

“I would highly recommend Rise of the Shadow Stealers to anyone, young or old.Scoop and Fletcher are encouraged by their tutors and villagers to go forth and create their own story. This is a positive message which lends itself perfectly to empowering children to be able to make their own life choices. This book will … Continue reading Rise of the Shadow Stealers Review →

The Ghastly Ghost of Girlington and Mr Jane

These pieces of macabre are from my first First Story anthology, written by one of the students at Beckfoot Upper Heaton school. The amazing illustrations are by Si Smith. The Ghastly Ghost of Girlington and Mr Janeby Ebrahim Daya Some parts of the forest are better left unexplored. They fester with bitterness and ancient rivalries … Continue reading The Ghastly Ghost of Girlington and Mr Jane →

An extract from the Firebird Chronicles

Wisdom, however, moved through the everglade like a butterfly tracking the scent of a rare flower. A little bird flitted ahead of her, darting from tree to tree. She ran her hand through a mass of blue buds, then stopped to smell a cup-shaped flower. It looked as if it had been set at a … Continue reading An extract from the Firebird Chronicles →

Gigan Ticks

An army of Gigan Ticks spilled from the Central Chasm. Black legs and bulbous bodies swarmed through the streets. The great arachnids scuttled along the cobbles, spinning sticky webs between the houses, climbing onto their roofs, ready to pounce.#FirebirdChronicles

Memory and Childhood

I’ve been enjoying reading Philip Pullman’s The Secret Commonwealth. This extract made me think about memory and childhood, two themes I’ve been working with in my own writing. ‘The first thing I remember is when I was taken to Jordan for the first time. I don’t know how old I was – probably just a … Continue reading Memory and Childhood →

An extract from the Firebird Chronicles

Around the Black Horizon, the ocean sparkled with a million points of light. It was the most beautiful thing Mr Snooze had ever seen. The hubbub behind him muffled. He stared across the water, unsure where the ocean ended and the star-strewn sky began. All around, flecks glinted green and blue, violet and amber. The … Continue reading An extract from the Firebird Chronicles →

A Different Kind of Magic

It’s been a while since my last blog post. I assure you, I am not a slow reader but I’m on the run up to graduation which has meant a lot of shopping, pampering and last-minute cocktail-based lunches. So, sorry but here I am! My read over the course of this…

We Have Conquered Earth!

Over the past few months I’ve been working with students from Beckfoot Upper Heaton school in Bradford, running creative writing workshops for First Story, a wonderful organisation that places writers in schools to encourage students in creative writing. Today we launched our first anthology of student’s writing. I’m very proud of them – they’ve worked … Continue reading We Have Conquered Earth! →

Knaresborough Wind In The Willows

So here’s something I got up to this summer… I just created this video (last night) to keep the memories of this extraordinary project alive – let me know what you think! 1 mile. 34 performers. 24 sell-out shows. 8 giant ducks. 6 weasels to avoid. 1 mole. 1 badger. 1 rat. 1 enormous party. … Continue reading Knaresborough Wind In The Willows →
