Sample chapter from HIGH WATER
While I get started on reviewing some books, here’s a sample chapter from my own book. It introduces the main characters, and will give you the general tone. That is, before the action starts! If you like it, here’s the link. Please leave honest reviews if you do buy it!
LOADING THE ARK
The box truck moved slowly, back up alarm bleeping, trying to fit into the narrow driveway between two brick duplexes. At the end of the driveway, arms akimbo, Pete watched the truck that was to carry all his po...

Update to: The Filthy Trenches
Nothing yet from my business partner across the pond.
Truly saddening. I thought we had something going there for a minute.

Jay Royston’s “Enter a Fistfull of Marijuana”
This is the review I provided for Amazon. Written a few days after I finished the book, I think it nails down what I like about it. Post script to follow.
There’s a lot going for this book: loony characters, more marijuana than you knew existed, a Canadian wilderness setting and the self deprecating humor of my friends to the north, and some fun musings about what it would take to make a better world. Jack Steele is ostensibly the lead in this farcical situation, a xenophobic and somewhat murd...

the filthy trenches of viral marketing
I got an email from a very concerned businessman today. The subject line read, “I write to seek your cooperation as my foreign partner”.
In a heartfelt and polite letter, Mr. Daniel explained that through rigorous fasting and prayers to his Almighty, he’d developed a spontaneous but blessedly divine trust in me. If I were to become his business partner, Mr. Daniel might let me in on an amazing deal, the kind that only comes once in a lifetime.
At first, I was shocked. Me? No way! He’d even emai...
My own book series
So time for a little bit of self promotion.
I’m the author of a book series called HIGH WATER.
It’s martial arts meets zombies meets kung fu, and Part 1, short and sweet, can be found here:
Here’s a review from a satisfied reader:
As I was reading through the third chapter of this short book, I was starting to get angry. It just kept reminding me that I’m completely out of weed, and had me desperately scorching the bottom of my caked bowl as I read on. I cannot imagine a more perfect bo...
How I’m going to review books
So I’ve given some thought to how I want to review books.
How about an analogue to the music criticism show, Sound Opinions?
To keep it simple, I’m thinking three levels of review:
Face-melting bong hits to the brain: Excellent, worth a reread, will change your fucking life.
A bowl and a read: Quality reading material, a solid choice for your stoned reading experience.
Schwag: Not worth burning.
My guess is that most of my reviews will fall in the middle, as they should. I generally don’t like to t...

Where does it appear in literature?
It’s actually surprisingly hard to find weed in popular fiction. Tokers are a small percentage of the population, but there’s also a likely reticence on the part of authors to engage it. That was certainly the case for me with HIGH WATER. Nothing like federal and state and international law to put a chilling effect on literature.
So let’s get started looked at pot in literature:
On the Road, by Jack Kerouac: Called “tea”, the characters spend a lot of time toking, especially toward the end.
The...
Welcome to POT FICTION!
The purpose of this blog is to be the destination for anyone interested in weed’s place in popular (or unpopular) fiction.
Stoners are often characterized unfairly: as people that don’t read much, or couldn’t care less about the written word. Nothing could be further from the truth. Cannabis consumers number in the millions, and are just as varied and diverse as the regular population.
As the herb becomes legal and moves from being demonized to being embraced, this blog will be the place examin...
