#8Sunday Share! Nobody’s Business…The Ex-Fiance
Welcome back!
Last week, Kai flashed back to the night she broke up with her ex-fiance, Malik. Instead of going home and crying her eyes out, she stayed at the bar to have a drink, and in the process, made a new…friend. Conversation led to a memorable night at his place (read all about it in this FREE READ, Crossroads, the novella leading up to Nobody’s Business!). But that was months ago and a lot has changed. Now, thanks to her cousin Ricky, she is fashionably late to her god-nephews birthday party, dressed as if she has adult plans when she leaves. As she suspected, the kids and parents are running around outside with water guns, soaked and laughing…
Snippet:
I smiled at the sight, and again regretted listening to Ricky’s advice of wearing skintight jeans and heels. Roughhousing was my element.
And then I saw Malik.
All six-foot-two of sexy. He was soaked from head-to-toe, his thick, light brown curly hair glistening as if he’d just gotten out of a pool. His white t-shirt clung to his chest, highlighting every ounce of chiseled muscle. He chased his nephew around for a moment, but stopped to wipe water out of his eye. And wouldn’t you know, he glanced toward the patio door, saw me looking at him, then smiled that half-cocked smile I used to love.
And here I stood, dressed to kill and ogling his sexy frame.
Damn.

About the novel….
Trevon Campbell’s world changed the moment his ex-girlfriend announced he was a father. Determined to make up for his past mistakes, he gives Trina what she wanted before their breakup, what feels like his soul, which means forgetting the woman he had a one-night stand with, the woman who stole his heart.
Kai Malone doesn’t want to play by her family’s rules. Instead of working for the family business, she became a firefighter. Being a female of multicultural descent, working in a field dominated by men, Kai focuses on her job to ignore the infidelity of her fiancé. Tired of his deceit, she gave in to a one-night stand with a complete stranger, someone she’d never have to see again…or so she thought.
When tragedy strikes, their worlds collide, leaving them no choice but to deal with each other again. It doesn’t take long for them to realize the attraction that brought them together the first time is stronger than ever, forcing Trevon to make the biggest decision of his life.

#8Sunday Share! Nobody’s Business…Flashback
Welcome back!
With her cousin Ricky’s help, Kai Malone is nearly ready to face her ex-fiance after months of not seeing him. In fact, she didn’t even see him they day she called everything off…
Snippet:
After promising to meet me so we could discuss our relationship and work things out, Malik conveniently became ‘unavailable’ at the last moment. Fed up with his lies, I called everything off. The wedding, that had yet to be planned, and our relationship in general. I didn’t want anything else to do with him.
Since I was already dressed up and too angry to sit alone at home and get depressed, I went to a bar to celebrate my decision. While I gave off all kinds of signals that said to any man in the vicinity, ‘leave me the hell alone,’ one man managed to talk to me. And what did I do? Gave him hell, fussed, cussed, and damn near accused him of being the one who broke my heart.
And he let me.
When my tantrum was over, he bought me a drink and we managed to have a decent conversation.

Authors…Claim Your Genre and Brand!
Authors, make use of your time everyday!
Jury duty…
For years the term made me cringe. The idea of giving up a week of my life to sit in a room full of disgruntaled people who were also pulled away to service their community was not high up on my ‘things I want to do’ list. You know the saying of be careful what you wish for? Well, I’m here to tell you, if you put that energy out into the universe, it WILL come back to you!
A few weeks ago I was watching an episode of CSI on Hulu and realized that I had never served on a jury. The author part of me automatically thought, “Hey! That would be a great place to find character/story inspiration!” The next day I got a letter in the mail with a date of when to be present at the courthouse to do my service. (I promise I am not making this up!!! Mmm….I wonder if this would work when playing the lottery????) My first thoughts were, “CRAP!”, followed by, “Hey, I’ll get a few free days off of work!” and the author side said, “Perfect! I can have uninterrupted time to write!!!”
#Alwayswriting…
Day #1
Monday arrived and I got to the courthouse on time to perform my duty. The first few hours were pretty quiet. By the time we returned from lunch people opened up and started talking. At one table sat a group of people who pulled out cards and started playing Spades. I had my pen and paper and went to work on the rough outline of my next book. In between I had conversations about books, and eventually, mentioned that I was a writer. That of course garnered a lot of interest and it was an opportunity to talk about my genre, introduce my brand, and tell them about my upcoming book signing at our local Barnes & Noble. Several people said they’d buy my books which of course put a smile on my face.
Day #2
The next morning when I arrived, I made sure I had bookmarks that have my logo, book covers, and website information. I made sure to give them to the group I’d been friendly with the day before, and kept an eye out for anyone else I could hook. I was very flattered when a young man who had been a part of the Spades game came over and said, “I thought I’d heard of you before. I Googled you when I got home and read your bio!” (This goes to show you that the work you put into your website and social networking sites, while from time to time can seem to not do anything to sell books or build your brand, actually works! When a reader can Google your name and find an archive of online information supporting who you are and what you do, it builds credibility and sparks interest. If you need advice on how to do this, follow this link to my previous post, Have You Googled Yourself?)
Before long, I was summoned with 35 others to go to a judges courtroom in order to go through the jury pool process. If you’ve never been called for jury duty, this means that you are questioned by the attorneys as to whether or not you’ll be a candidate to fit on the jury panel. The questions you are asked will depend on what type of case is being presented, but either way, you are required to stand up and tell a little bit about yourself, such as your name, family status, and employment. I shared my information, ending with the fact that I am an author first, and librarian second. Now, to some of my fellow jury pool members, this wasn’t new because I had been sharing information about my books to anyone who would listen. Then I was asked what type of books I write. My answer; “Interracial Romance and Women’s Fiction.”
Then someone on the back row decided to blurt out: “That’s porn!”
Now, this scene could have ended two ways. I could have ignored the response and let it sit in the air and let people think that the woman was making a valid point… or respond.
I chose the later.
Taking a deep breath and forcing my voice to stay as pleasant as possible, I turned and replied: “I don’t write porn. You’re referring to Erotica such as 50 Shades of Gray. I write Women’s Fiction which is completely different.”
My response garnered more questions from both attorneys which lead me to explaining why I decided to write, what type of stories I tell, and the fact that my books are not just geared towards women readers, that I also have male readers as well. The last thing I said before sitting down was: “My books are about the character development of both men and women. In fact, the highest rated review my first novel has received can be found on Amazon and was written by a male reader.”
When we were dismissed for a break, five women followed me out and asked for more information about my books. By time I got home and checked my sales states on Amazon, the sales numbers had risen for ALL of the books, including Nobody’s Business which, at the time, set for pre-sale.
So, what is the point to this story?
Often times I hear about authors who keep the fact that they are an author to a close circle of friends or family. Some have no choice but to stand behind an online presence because of work related issues. For whatever reason you do or do not decide to sell yourself when you are out is up to you. When it comes to marketing and promoting your brand, your books, it’s all about the amount of time and effort you put into it. My personal experiences have shown that I gain more readers, see a spike in sales, and grow my fan base faster when I talk to people face-to-face, versus spending hour online popping into chat rooms or spend hours of hanging out on FB and Twitter trying to engage with readers who have already read the books and are waiting on the next one. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it when my phone alerts me to a Facebook private message from a reader who has read one of my novels, popped over to my website and read one of my short stories and want to take a few minutes to chat or ask a question. If I have a moment, I will respond, answer questions, and appreciate each and every one. But my favorite thing of all it meeting new people and feeling confident enough in my writing and my bran to say, “Yes, I am a published author.”
If you haven’t had a chance to do so, I encourage each and everyone of you to try it at least once. You’ll be surprised by the results!

#8Sunday Share! Nobody’s Business…Career
Welcome back!
Last week you met Kai and her cousin, Ricky. She’s about to go to her god-nephews birthday party and there’s no doubt that she’s going to run into her ex-fiance. After some encouragement from Ricky, Kai sits down and lets him do his ‘artistic thang’ and apply her makeup. In Kai’s world, some things are more important than worrying about her personal appearance…Besides, as a cross-dresser, he’s pretty good at creating a work of art from a clean, blank canvas.
Snippet:
“Hell, I can do your makeup better than you can.”
I laughed. He was telling the truth.
My profession didn’t require me to spend a lot of time in the mirror every morning. As a firefighter, the last thing I had time to worry about was makeup when at work. Twenty-four hour on/forty-eight hour off shifts weren’t conducive to precision makeup application and good hair days.
A clean face and my hair in a ponytail was all I needed. Simple and efficient. None of the guys wanted to see me walking around the station reminding them of their girlfriends and wives.
Being the only female at the station was enough to make my job challenging.

Back to School with the GCA 2015-2016! August 10th-14th
Well, it’s that time of year again! Time for our kids to go back to school! Or in most of our cases, having something educational and constructive to do on the internet instead of chit-chatting or play games. This year, I am down to having two kids in the program; a daughter in the 8th grade, and a son in the 9th.
So what’s new for us?
Well for starters, we’ve got new equipment!
As most of you know, if you have more than one child in the program and they are in the same school (elementary, middle, or high school), and are eligible to receive a computer from the school, you only get one. Your responsible for securing another computer for the second student to use, or else you have to work out sharing. When we started the middle school program during the 2013/2014 school year, both of my youngest kids were in middle school. We recieved a desk top computer and printer which was primarily used by my son, while my daughter used a laptop or one of the other desktop computers we had at home. Last year, my oldest daughter decided to complete her 12th grade year in the GCA instead of going back to the B&M Magnet Arts school she’d been attending for three years. As a high school student, she was eligible for a laptop. Once she graduated, the laptop was returned to the school.
But this year, we had options…
Computers:
Since my son is no longer in middle school, the desktop computer that was assigned to him needed to be returned. As a high school student, he is now has a laptop which is given to high school students. When I contacted the school in regards to returning his desktop, I was advised to keep it and it would be assigned to my daughter who is still in middle school. Because we’d had that laptop for nearly two years, I asked to return it and have a new one sent to my daughter…mainly because last year, that desktop computer had too many issues, and trying to have them resolved by the K12 Tech department didn’t really fix anything. We still had issues with viruses. Besides, electronics wear down over the years and I wanted her to start off with her own, brand new, never been used computer.
My son received a brand new laptop, which made my recent high school graduate jealous! The laptop she got last year didn’t have all the fun bells and whistles as this new one. The bells and whistles being a built in camera and really cool headphones. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to make a kid smile.
First Week of School:
If it’s not your first time in the GCA, you know that just like the first week of B&M schools, it’s hectic, crazy, and out of order! New and returning students have to get acquainted with a new set of teachers, course curriculum, and schedule. Classes are reassigned multiple times and so are homerooms. Councilors are called upon to ease some of the tension, answer questions, and get kids situated in the right class. As for teachers, getting a chance to meet their new students, have assignments, and course layout is key. And, like B&M schools, unless your at the top of the class (meaning in the final grade level of the school or your a student who already has a history in the school), you probably spend a majority of the time sitting in class, talking about your summer and don’t have any assignments because its impossible to get started when everyone doesn’t have what they need. I say this because if your student didn’t have any class assignments except for logging in to get the orientation for each class, it’s okay! They are not behind and they are not failing! It’s just the first week of school and there is always a learning curve! Take a deep breath, calm down, and don’t stress! If your new to the program, so is your student. If you stress about it, your student will stress and that can make the entire experience of not attending public school more stressful than actually attending public school!
***Remember…most of us decided to pull our kids out of their regular school because of teachers, bullying, worrying about our kids safety, and a myriad of other reasons. Let’s not be the ones to make what should be a painless experience one our kids dislike!***
Classwork:
As I said above, if your student is returning to GCA and already has a history in the program, their first week of school should have been a busy one. My daughter started in the school when she was halfway through her 6th grade year. This year, her first day of school was with a full schedule, starting at 8:30 am and ending around 12:30 pm. During that time she attending classes, was assigned work to do in class and in-between the start time for the next class. Her days generally finished around 1:30 to 2:00 because she was able to get a lot of work done during class. Since the Study Island and USA Test Prep weren’t up, she didn’t have any outside assignments that would take her longer to do. I’d say she had an amazing first week of school! Unlike last year, (if you haven’t read my last blog post about that particular experience…sigh, follow this link) she is determined not to repeat. One of the comments she said that made me smile and have hope that this will indeed be a better year was when she said, “I was able to finish most of my work during the class period which meant I didn’t need to go back after my last online class to do homework. I like that.” Yes my friends, if she keeps this up, 8th grade should be a lot less painless for everyone!!!!!
9th Grade…
Well, it’s the first year in a virtual high school, how else was it supposed to go? Crazy, that’s for sure! The first day, my son only had 3 classes on his schedule, mostly after 8:30 am. As the week went on, the schedule changed to only one orientation to attend and that wasn’t until 1:30 in the afternoon. Instead of stressing about it, my son played around on the computer and discovered the ORN tab. What that did was basically walk him through the ‘day in a life’ of each class subject. He got to read, answer questions, discover exactly where he’ll have to go to find the appropriate text books, videos, and other information for his classes. Unlike middle school, high school doesn’t come with a box load of books. The only shipments he received were his laptop, art supplies, math book, and literature books…everything else will be available online. Because he has a problem with math, he tested for and was accepted in the Fundamentals of Algebra class, which I think is a great idea! I’m glad the state is trying out this new math class. I remember being in the 9th grade, failing my Algebra class, and having to do summer school. Uhh! If they would have had a program like this during school, it would have made life that much easier! So, we’ll see where this goes. Now all we’re waiting for is for his Science class to be assigned and for the Art class to come off the schedule.
***I saw a parent on FB mention looking for one of the books they did not receive on Amazon, and I was like, ‘wow’. The beauty of taking the online classes is that they know what curriculum our kids need to have in order to be successful. They only ship what we need. If the work is available online, let’s go for it, it’s called Going Green!***
What I did like….
The middle school schedule outline! This is new! I like how they have outlined what the students day should look like! If your student follows the outline, participates in each live class everyday, they will stay on top of their work. I like the fact that lunch time and breaks or catch-up time is factored in between each live class. I also like the fact that they show a student when they should focus on working on Study Island and USA Test Prep assignments…after lunch where it’s more like homework instead of in-class work.
First Week in a Nutshell…
…not bad at all! That’s not to say craziness won’t come up, but I’m happy. My kids have a full understanding of what it is they need to do this year if they want to be successful. Last year, they pushed it, this year, they plan to be successful…only time will tell. But regardless, one of the main things we as parents of home schooled kids need to remember:
We made the decision to bring our kids home and give them a different way to learn. Its not going to be the same.
Every day won’t be an eight hour day of school work.
It’s okay to miss a live class, that’s why they have videos.
Class doesn’t always have to begin at 8:30 am and can indeed end at 12:00 am.
As long as your children are participating, completing the assignments, and asking for help when they need it from teachers and counselors, your going to be okay!
Now…who’s ready for week two?
**UPDATE**: Tuesday, August 18th: My 8th graders classes are still going strong; my 9th graders full course load starts today and he has everything I need. Much thanks to his councilor who has reached out to me several times since Monday to make sure he was on the right educational track!
How did the first week of school go for you? Comment below!
PS: To all of my GCA Parents, I’m on the Facebook GCA 8th Grade and 9th Grade private pages as M.j.Kane. I look forward to chatting with you!

#8Sunday Share! Nobody’s Business…Kai
Welcome back!
Today we’re switching POV’s and visiting Chapter 2. Meet Kai Malone, a woman who is satisfied with the hand life has dealt her. She’s single, and has spent the past 5 years enjoying her career of being a firefighter. Today is her day off and she’s preparing to spend the afternoon with family and friends at her god-nephews birthday party. Take a few moments to read by following this link. In the meantime, enjoy this introduction to Kai!
Snippet:
“Kai, girl, you need to dress it up if you want to get his attention.”
“It’s a children’s birthday party, Ricky. I can’t be overdressed; it’ll make me look desperate.”
My cousin rolled his eyes, grabbed a makeup kit from his duffel bag, and directed me to sit on the corner of my bed. “Girlfriend, you ex-fiancé is the baby’s uncle. You left him a year ago and you’re still single. By all accounts, you are desperate. He don’t need to know that.” He sucked his teeth. “So like I said, you need to sex it up so the bastard knows what he’s missing.”

This was the first time I’ve had the opportunity to do more than guest post online. I had the chance to get from behind the computer screen and be interviewed on two radio stations and do a book signing at Barnes & Noble! All three were the highlight of my blog tour and I look forward to doing these type of events again! If you missed them, here are the links to listen to the radio brodcasts, as well as the highlights of the book signing. And if you couldn’t make it the book signing, no worries! Plans are in motion to do a second book signing, book discussion and reading at Barnes & Noble in the next few months. Stay tuned!!!
On the Air with Ella D. Curry!!!
On the Air with The Real with Rachel D!!!
Barnes & Noble Book Signing!!!
The blog tour has also seen a wonderful share of great reviews for the story! After a year of hard work and investing countless hours and emotions into creating characters I’ve fallen in love with and a story I feel matters, there’s always that moment when your work hits the world and you can’t help but worry what readers will have to say about it. Will they love the characters as much as me? Will the story hit all the emotions I felt when writing it? I’m happy to say that readers are loving the story of Trevon and Kai! See what they have to say by following these links to read the reviews!
Amazon Reviews GoodreadsReviews
So now that the tour is over, what do I have planned? Well, I’m already working on the fifth novel in The Butterfly Memoirs, Alone. The Prologue and Chapter One can be found at the end of NOBODY’S BUSINESS. I’ve got five months to whip this puppy into shape and have her ready to be submitted to my publisher next year. School is back in session and the journey of another year of home schooling begins. I’ll be blogging about that next week. For the past year, I’ve held a day job as a Librarian Assistant and love it! Needless to say, I’ve run across a lot of interesting people and books. I think I’m going to start sharing some of those experiences and book covers as well. And of course, I’ve got tips, tricks, and information to share about writing. Until then….stay tuned and HAPPY READING!!!!

#8Sunday Share! Nobody’s Business…Determination?
Welcome back!
Last week, Trevon’s ex-girlfriend, and mother of his two-year-old son, Justin, told him that his ‘plans’ to get back together for the sake of their son was a waste of time. So of course the smartest thing for him to do is to sit back and keep his mouth shut because actions speak louder than words. But there is just one little problem….
Snippet:
I sat back in my chair and held my tongue. When Trina got all worked up, there was no way to make a point. But that was fine. I let her believe what she needed to believe. Telling her my true reasons for cheating on her would only make the situation worse. The past was just that, the past. I knew from the beginning that convincing her that getting back together would be what was best for the sake of our son would take time.
That I had a lot of.
After all, I wasn’t interested in any other women right now.
Well, except for the one who broke my heart before knowing it belonged to her.

About the novel….
Trevon Campbell’s world changed the moment his ex-girlfriend announced he was a father.

Nobody’s Business…Long Term Memory
Welcome back!
Trevon is visiting with his son and his ex-girlfriend,Trina. It’s been eight months since he learned about the existence of his two year old son and the health problems he is faced with. Determined to do the right thing, Trevon feels they should become a family. He gives up his bachlor pad in downtown Atlanta and buys a house in the suburbs to show Trina how serious he is. Now if he could just convince her to ignore his past mistakes…
Excerpt:
“Oh, I beg to differ. My actions were a direct result of yours. The only problem was you couldn’t handle it. I was supposed to be the faithful woman sitting around while you did what you wanted. I can’t believe you expected me to take it sitting down.” She stopped, held up a hand, closed her eyes for a moment, and took a deep breath. “But you know what, that’s neither here nor there. What’s in the past is just that. The only thing I need or want from you is help raising our son. So, if selling your condo to buy a house is what you expected would make me want to come back,” she smirked, “you screwed up.”
