Thank you so much Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival for selecting us! I am very very happy and excited. We are planning to have a slightly different Q & A after the movie, so even you have already watched the film, please come and join us. As we spent 12 years producing the film, we have so many interesting behind the scenes stories to share with you!See you at the LA Live A Barco Innovation Center on September 30th! Thank you so so much!PSWHAT ARE YOUR COVID PROTOCOLS AND PROCEDURES?Your health and safety is our top priority, and we are committed to the well-being of our artists, audiences, and allies. In keeping with guidance from our local, state, and federal health agencies, masks are required to be worn indoors in Los Angeles, even for fully vaccinated individuals. To be allowed access to our events, we ask that you please provide proof of either, (a) confirmation that you have been fully vaccinated (two weeks from a single dose vaccine, or two weeks from the second dose of a two dose vaccine); or (b) a negative PCR test for COVID-19 (taken within 72 hours of the event), including for children below the age of 12 years. We will not store your vaccination information upon checking. Tests will not be provided at the event. If you are attending multiple events during Festival Week, a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours will be required prior to every event, not just the first event you attend. If you were vaccinated in CA, downloading Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Records provided by the state are highly recommended for faster check-ins. THE N'GUSTRO AFFAIR by Jean-Patrick Manchette
THE N'GUSTRO AFFAIR by Jean-Patrick Manchette; Translated by Donald Nicholson-Smith and Introduction by Gary Indiana (NYRB)
Crime fiction writing deals with space between the image and the words and the talent to enter and leave as quickly as possible. The French author Jean-Patrick Manchette seems to be in the position of being an excellent writer, and the ability to express action, not only in a physical sense but also in its intelligence. There are certain writers one can learn from, and Manchette and Richard Stark are both writers who know how to move the narration at a speed where one turns the page after another because one may know how it ends but love the journey to getting there.
The N'GUSTRO Affair is based on the kidnapping and killing of Mehdi Ben Barka of Morocco. Still, Manchette turns the novel focusing on Henri Butron, a psychopath thug thrown into a world that he doesn't understand and just a puppet among the others who are pulling and controlling the strings. A tight and beautifully put-together novel, which again reminds me of the mechanics of the Parker series by Richard Stark. Not a wasted word, and therefore every thought expressed, although in a minimalist manner of stark perfection.
