Author Spotlight with Jessica James's New Release ~ Lacewood

Thanks, L.A. for spotlighting my new release!
Hello Readers! For those of you who don’t know me, I started my writing career in the historical fiction genre with the award-winning Civil War novel Shades of Gray. (It came out before the other Shades of Gray, and you will be disappointed if you’re looking for sex scenes).
To make a long story short, really strange things started happening to let me know that a book in a different genre was waiting to be written. That book became Meant To Be, and launched me into the romantic suspense genre. And, now I’m so excited to release Lacewood, which is a combination of contemporary romance, historical fiction, and mystery—mixed in with some of my favorite things…small towns, old houses and grand old trees.
As someone who lives in a 200-year-old house, I always think about the people who occupied the same space…their laughter and their tears, their good times and their bad times. Lacewood gives the reader a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what took place in an old neglected Southern mansion before two people from the modern world stumble across it and into each other.
Hopefully it takes readers on a journey that connects the past with the present—and the present with eternity.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it!
A 500-ish word Excerpt:Turning in a circle, Katie studied the room again. Faded wallpaper curled and peeled above the dusty wainscoting, but the walls themselves appeared sturdy. On the far side of the entryway, and dominating the wall, stood a mammoth fireplace with an ornately carved hearth. Her attention was immediately drawn to a painting of a woman in nineteenth century dress that hung prominently over the mantel.“Who is she?”The sheriff turned to the dusty, sun-bleached portrait in the heavy carved guilt frame. “One of the previous owners, they say.” He shrugged. “The family history kind of got lost with the house. Everyone around here calls her the Widow of Lacewood.”Katie stood spellbound. The woman was clothed completely in black, but the magnificence of the gown gave the impression of sophistication and class. Her chin was slightly elevated as if to project strength, yet there was more than a hint of sorrow and pain in her eyes.“She looks so sad.” Katie spoke without removing her gaze. “And so young. How could she be a widow?”The sheriff had already started to walk away, but he turned back and glanced at the painting. “Not sure, but they say she never remarried. She’s the one out in the cemetery, too, I reckon.”Katie’s heart suddenly struggled to beat. The anguish in the woman’s eyes kept her riveted. She could see the pain. Feel a heart ripped apart. Something was missing that could never be replaced. Katie had felt such loss before. In a way, that’s why she was here.“You coming?”With one quick glance back before turning to follow the sheriff, Katie noticed particles of dust now swirled and danced in a shaft of light, almost like a living thing. Her breath caught in her throat as the dust seemed to materialize into the form of a woman, her eyes dull with the same tortured despair and disbelief as the one in the portrait.Katie jerked her head around for a closer look and blinked. The woman was gone.

Short Blurb: Two people trying to escape their pasts find a connection through an old house—and fulfill a destiny through the secrets it shares.
Long Blurb: Sometimes love is just too powerful for one lifetime…
MOVING TO A SMALL TOWN in Virginia is a big change for New York socialite Katie McCain. But when she stumbles across an abandoned 200-year-old mansion, she’s enthralled by the enduring beauty of the neglected estate—and captivated by the haunting portrait of a woman in mourning.
Purchasing the property on a whim, Katie attempts to fit in with the colorful characters in the town of New Hope, while trying to unravel the mystery of the “widow of Lacewood.” As she pieces together the previous owner’s heartrending story, Katie uncovers secrets the house has held for centuries, and discovers the key to coming to terms with her own sense of loss.
The past and present converge when hometown hero Will Durham returns and begins his own healing process by helping the “city girl” restore the place that holds so many memories. As the mystic web of destiny is woven, a love story that might have been lost forever is exposed, and a destiny that has been waiting in the shadows for centuries is fulfilled.
Part love story, part ghost story, Lacewood is a timeless novel about trusting in fate, letting go of the past, and believing in things that can’t be seen.

She is a three-time winner of the John Esten Cooke Award for Southern Fiction, and has won more than a dozen other literary awards, including a Readers' Favorite International Book Award and a Gold Medal from the Military Writers Society of America.
Her novels have been used in schools and are available in hundreds of libraries including Harvard and the U.S. Naval Academy.

DA VINCI'S SECRET PALES. Michelangelo concealed an explosive truth in his famous Creation of Adam fresco in the Sistine Chapel. Eve did not cause the fall of man. She carried a far more devastating secret for millennia—one that will change the world forever.
As the modern-day world suffers the cataclysmic effects of the “Plagues of Egypt,” Avery Fitzgerald, a statuesque Astrophysics major at Stanford, discovers that she is mysteriously bound to five strangers by an extremely rare condition that foremost medical experts cannot explain. Thrust into extraordinary circumstances, they race against time to stay alive as they are pursued by an age-old adversary and the world around them collapses into annihilation. Under sacred oath, The Guardians—a far more archaic and enigmatic secret society than the Freemasons, Templars, and the Priory—protect Avery as she embarks on a daring quest that only legends of old have been on before. Avery must come to terms with the shocking realization that the blood of an ancient queen flows through her veins and that the fate of the world now rests on her shoulders.
The Thirteenth Guardian is Book One of a daring new Trilogy that will shake you to your core.
Goodreads│Amazon│ Barnes & Noble Excerpt:
Remi had always dreamed that he would do meaningful work in his life. His parents repeatedly told him that he had a great destiny ahead of him and that one day he would do amazing things. Remi believed that perhaps one day he would become a senator or congressman and would change the lives of millions of people. The fact that at twenty-one, he was now in a room with the President of the United States, and his chief of staff, working on a plan to keep the United States government functional, left him with mixed feelings. It was awe inspiring on the one hand, but on the other, the circumstances around which it was happening were terrifying. As the men conferred around an old coffee table, which had now become the platform on which the future of the United States was being shaped, the door to the war room burst open and a Marine rushed in with terror in his eyes. He doubled over, choking, like something was stuck in his throat. Remi rushed to his aid.“What now?” the president barked. He was frustrated and at a loss after everything that had happened over the last few hours. He had run out of patience, and his capacity for sympathy was completely eroded.“Mr. President, you need to come up to the surface entrance. You need to do it now,” the Marine said, gasping for air.The president knew enough about the Marines’ degree of professionalism that he did not object.Everyone followed the Marine down the hall and hopped into the Humvee for the three-minute ride up the steeply inclined roadway to the entrance of the bunker.“Maybe you should slow down for a minute and catch your breath.”“I am going to be fine, Mr. President. I am able to breathe a lot better now, sir.”“Sorry I was curt earlier. It’s been a rough few days, and my nerves are a little frayed. I should have been more compassionate.”They stopped at the head of the roadway, which was protected by a steel gate large enough for a semi-truck. The Marine walked to the side and opened a smaller door that led down a short hallway and to a steep set of stairs. The group of men climbed up the stairs in silence and emerged at the top of the guard tower. The president was the first to step out of the stairwell and into the guard tower opening. He let out a loud gasp. His chief of staff followed and let out an equally loud expletive. As Remi stepped out of the stairwell, he had instinctively braced himself for anything; yet still, what he saw shocked him to his core.

Take Five with Author Joseph Frances Collins

Welcome to An Indie Adventure, Joseph Frances Collins (Joe Collins).
How do you use setting to further your story The Black Hand: Arsonist?
Thanks for hosting me, L.A.
It’s something I know and have lived for the last 20 years and will do so until I am physically unable to climb up on the fire apparatus. To have experienced what the feel the heat of a fire with your breath rasping through a SCBA despite the protection of a great deal of very expensive equipment and years of training and experience is something very few people know. And to have witnessed what a fire, EMS, rescue or extrication scene sounds like, looks like and feels like to the smells, sounds and nightmares to follow. How is your main character completely different than you?
I was two classes away from a minor in Chemistry but I couldn’t get past the infamous Inorganic Chemistry classes of shattered souls. Organic Chemistry is so much easier, just look for the carbon molecule and everything is revealed. As an aside, I have spent twenty years as a volunteer firefighter and that often comes in handy in some of the many classes I’ve taken over the years in correcting the instructor multiple times during a class about making meth and how the fire service should deal with it to the point where he wanted to throw me out.
Tell us something about yourself we might not expect!
My day job is as an International Arms Dealer. I work for a defense contractor and facilitate international arms sales including generating sales orders, helping fill out reams of paper all the way to building weapons and packing them to go to other countries. No, it doesn’t involve travels to exotic places of danger but the most I face is papercuts or dropping a ream of forms on my foot. I also sell men’s clothing as a part-time job.
What do you do to rev your creative juices?
Step back from a piece of work and let my subconscious figure out what and how I’m going to solve the problems I’ve tortured my characters with. Read books in a different genre, do laundry and work around the house and suddenly an idea or two pops into my head. I also listen to my dreams during sleep to know that I would have answers when I wake up in the morning. I also am always indebted to my lovely life who works with me on everything I’ve written—sometimes as a writer, you get so immersed in a story that a new perspective helps on what I’m trying to figure out.
If you were not a writer, what vocation would you pursue?
I cannot imagine being anything except a writer. I can’t paint/draw worth a darn so telling stories is what I do. I’m Irish which means story telling is in my genes. I love too strongly, live life on the edge, work too much and tell stories. My longtime dream job as a paramedic is no longer something I can do because of physical limitations—it’s a job for the younger generations but I’ve done the best I can to make sure that those who follow me will be the best that they can be.
If you were a TV, film or book character, apart from one you've created, who would you be? And why?
Thomas Magnum. Living in paradise, driving a Ferrari, taking down bad guys and has been an SEAL. He lives by his ideals and wears his heart on his wrist—a POW bracelet.
Give us a brief summary of “The Black Hand: Arsonist”:The Black Hand...A shadowy organization that recruits, trains and supports assassins who specialize in unique methods of murder.
A Talent for ChemistryMathew Tudor had just earned his PhD and was working a dead end job when The Black Hand approached him about a life altering career change.
A New CareerHe was in too deep before he learned that he'd been hired as an arsonist. He'd already sold his soul to The Black Hand and saw no way to get his freedom.
The Future His training end with a final test—a massive arson fire so dangerous that it might kill him. With luck, skill and determination, he might just survive his time as...The Black Hand: Arsonist

R&R: Raves and Rants With Multi-Published Author Amanda Cabot

· Passive voice is weak.· Only sloppy writers use passive voice.· You should never use passive voice.
I suspect you’ve heard at least one of those declarations, perhaps uttered with such conviction that you were certain you’d be struck by lightning if you dared question the validity of them. I’m here to play devil’s advocate and tell you that all three are wrong. Mind you, I’m not a fan of passive voice, and I try to avoid it, but – and this is a big but – there are times when the passive voice is the best choice.

Let’s start by defining passive voice. After all, it helps to be able to identify this “never to be used” verb construct. My Merriam Webster’s dictionary offers the following definition: “asserting that the grammatical subject of a verb is subjected to or affected by the action represented by that verb.”
While it’s an accurate definition, I was appalled by it, because there have to be easier ways to define passive voice.
· One is to use an equation:o A form of the verb “to be” + a past participle (typically a word ending in “ed”) = passive voice· Or you can apply a simple test.o Does the subject of the sentence do something ; i.e., does the subject act? If so, the sentence uses active voice. “We all enjoyed the event” is active voice.o Does the subject of the sentence have something done to it ? If so, it’s passive voice. “The event was enjoyed by all” is passive voice.
The second example, by the way, is the reason most people avoid the passive voice. It sounds artificial. Is it weak? Not necessarily, but the phrasing is awkward.

· When you want to emphasize the object.“I was appalled by it.”Did you notice that I used passive voice when I described my reaction to the official definition? I could have said, “That definition appalled me,” which would have been active voice, but the sentence wouldn’t have had the same impact. I wanted to make my reaction the most important part of the sentence, and so I used passive voice, putting the word “I” at the beginning of the sentence.
· When the subject is unknown or unimportant.“The lawn had been mowed before we arrived home.”In this case, what’s important is the condition of the lawn, not who did the mowing. Again, passive voice is the right choice.
The bottom line is:· Passive voice is not necessarily weak.· You’re not necessarily a sloppy writer if you use it.· There are times when you should use passive voice.
I won’t end this by saying, “I hope this post was enjoyed by you,” since that would be an example of all that’s wrong about passive voice. Instead, let me say simply, “I hope you enjoyed the post.”
And I hope you’ll return in August, when we’ll revisit commas and some of the more amusing things that happen when they’re omitted or used in the wrong place.

Friday Recipe and New Release From Author Theresa Fuller

Broccoli From Theresa Fuller
Hi, L.A. Thanks for having me as a guest on your blog.
I love broccoli. Easy. Healthy. And cooking broccoli each time affirms my belief that anything can become a feast.
But first a little story.
I did 2 years of domestic science in high school and if it had not been for camouflage, I would have failed. I was supposed to cook sausage rolls for the test. I knew I would burn them because I was new to ovens. Most Singaporean homes even today do not have ovens. Ovens were these mysterious objects that Europeans possessed or only the rich.
As expected, I burnt the sausage rolls. Not too badly though. Scorched sections here and there. But then I knew I would. And I was prepared.
On the day of the test, I brought a heap of parsley. I also made little hors d'oeuvre. I raided my Mum’s fridge for anything I could find to make them. The parsley hid the burnt bits of sausage rolls and the little things on toothpicks distracted the teacher.
I passed. Thankfully there was no taste test involved!

Take Five With Author Kim McMahill

Welcome to An Indie Adventure, Kim. Tell us, what inspired you to write your book, A Foundation of Fear.
Thanks for hosting me, L.A.
A Foundation of Fear is the third novel in the Risky Research Series. The series explores the diet, nutrition, research and pharmaceutical worlds. The book topics range from a miracle weight loss pill, to a deadly sweetener, to the political influence exerted in order to maximize profits from an industry worth roughly between 40 to 100 billion dollars annually. Health and nutrition are such complex topics and impact nearly everyone, and the money involved is definitely worth killing for.
How is your main character completely different than you?
Devyn is a fearless FBI agent who definitely leads a much more adventurous life than I do. Well, she has no fear of drug dealers, crime bosses, or back-alley thugs, but she does have a fear of relationships and having her heart broken.
Tell us something about yourself we might not expect!
Hold on to your hats! I don’t own a Smart Phone. I don’t have anything against the device and suspect I’ll get one in the not so distant future, but for now I haven’t felt the need for one and fear it may consume time I don’t have to spare.
If you were not a writer, what vocation would you pursue?
I always dreamed of being an archeologist, but when looking into college majors I thought I should pursue something more practical. Writing action, adventure, and suspense allows me to explore and solve mysteries. My goal in the next phase of my life is to find and take advantage of volunteer opportunities to participate on digs.
Do you prefer to read in the same genre you write in, or do you avoid reading that genre? Why?I love to read suspense and action adventure. I can’t imagine writing in any other genre. Action adventure and romantic suspense can take the reader on journeys to places they can only dream of and put them in situations that make their hearts race.
When you’re brainstorming for a new story, what usually comes first for you, the plot or the characters?
Usually the plot comes first. Once I know how the story will unfold it is easier to determine the types of characters I need in order to accomplish the mission in an interesting and entertaining way.

FBI Special Agent Devyn Nash is obsessed with taking down Coterie, a deadly group out to control the multi-billion-dollar diet product industry. The FBI’s plan to expose Coterie places Devyn’s best friend and her partner’s fiancé in the crosshairs of this ruthless organization. Can Devyn protect her friend and bring the coldblooded killers to justice before they strike again while distracted by injury, a sexist bully, and a long-distance relationship with a handsome Wyoming sheriff?
Lobbyist and Coterie assassin Sofia Wilks wants nothing more than to regain control of her life. Sofia knows Agent Nash is nipping at her heels, but the FBI agent isn’t the worst of her fears. She is drawn to a man who has the power to destroy her.

Excerpt:He didn’t want to be here.
But on this small island, places to wait for Popi were limited. And the wedding appeared to be taking place in a common area of the village.
Apollo found himself standing off to the side. No one seemed to make a big deal of him being there. They acted as though he was just another wedding guest. Some even shook his hand and greeted him.
Up until now, Apollo had done nothing but make one mistake after the next since the day he was born. He thought he’d have time to fix things—to change his ways. After all, he was young. There was plenty of time to make up for the past, but then suddenly out of nowhere he’d been blindsided when time had run out for Nile and his wife, Andrina. And now he owed it to his brother not to mess things up where the baby was concerned.
As he thought of Nile, the breath hitched in Apollo’s throat. It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. He was the adventure seeker—the daredevil. If something bad had to happen, it should have been to him. Not his brother. None of this made any sense.
A flurry of motion drew Apollo from his thoughts. The wedding guests took their seats. Not wanting to stand out any more than he already did with his casual attire, Apollo took a seat in the back. The classical music started. Two pretty women started up the aisle.
And then Popi appeared at the end of the aisle, holding a bouquet of teal blossoms. She looked radiant. Her smile lit up her whole face. All he could do in that minute was stare at the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen in his life. It was the same sort of stunned reaction he’d experienced at her place, when he’d found her in the very short, very revealing pink robe. He couldn’t decide which look he preferred on her. Both looks had their alluring qualities.
It was in that moment her gaze lifted, meeting his. The breath caught in his chest. Her big brown eyes were mesmerizing. He felt as though he were being drawn into her chocolate-brown depths. His heart beat faster, as time felt as though it had been suspended.
She was looking right at him as she stepped forward. His mouth grew dry. He should turn away, but he couldn’t. She was amazing in every way.
