Sneak Peek Sunday
It's Sunday! Snippet time! While Six Sentence Sunday is now a thing of the past, you can still get your Sunday dose of snippets by following the Sneak Peek Sunday blog hops each week. The main site with the entire list of participating blogs can be found here: http://sneakpeeksunday.blogspot.com/ (or by clicking on the banner to the left).
Since this is the first Sunday of a brand new blog hop, I'm showing you something new, a few unedited lines from my upcoming release, Fire Within, book two in the Guardian Witch urban fantasy series. To set the scene, Ari, my witch, is attending a charity function with friends, and they're viewing the items in the silent auction.
My sneak peek:
Ari paused when she spied a champagne dinner for two from Club Dintero. She wouldn’t be bidding on that. Claris's attempt to hurry them past, to skip that particular auction item, brought a frown to Ari's face. Like she wouldn’t notice.
Ari knew she had been a little touchy on the subject of Andreas and his club. Unbidden, a series of scenes flashed through her head: strong arms holding a grief-stricken young witch; a dark figure singing on stage, the crowd captivated; the same sexy figure sipping Chianti; a forbidden kiss. Ari determinedly brushed aside such highly selective memories. Those were only the good things—and some were terrible.
***
Thanks for stopping! I Hope you enjoyed the peek. If you'd like to look around and learn more about my series, you might want to start with the home page.
When you're finished, remember to click on one of the links above to continue your hop from the main site!

Coffee Chat with Author Dan O'Brien
The coffee pot is on!
I have my Starbucks/Cameron vanilla hazelnut blend and am eager for another chat. We have Dan O'Brien with us today. How do you take your coffee, Dan?
DAN: I love a White Mocha with soy and no whip.
Ally: Coming right up. So, tell us about yourself.
Bio: A psychologist, author, philosopher, freelance editor, and skeptic, Dan O’Brien has published several novels and currently has many in print, including: The End of the World Playlist, Bitten, The Journey, The Ocean and the Hourglass, The Portent, The Path of the Fallen, Book of Seth, and Cerulean Dreams. Follow him on Twitter (@AuthorDanOBrien) or visit his blog at http://thedanobrienproject.blogspot.com. He also works as an editor at Empirical, a national magazine with a strong West Coast vibe. Find out more about the magazine at
http://empiricalmag.blogspot.com/
.
Ally: Now we've seen the official bio, what other facts didn't make the public version?
DAN: I am an avid health and exercise enthusiast and am currently training for an Ironman triathlon. I love the movie Lonesome Dove, and even though I now live in California, I sometimes miss the Big Horn Mountains and Shell Canyon in northern Wyoming.
Ally: Now that you've made me feel guilty for ignoring my treadmill :) , I'd like to talk about your writing. What genre or genre do you write, and why did you make that choice?
DAN: I began writing fantasy/science fiction when I was very young. Truly, my first experience with writing was when I was six or seven and I created a play (complete with characters on Popsicle sticks and a set design) for my cousin's birthday. I have always had a love of science fiction and fantasy, so there was a natural appeal to transition into writing it. I love the sense of escapism, but also the incredible ability to talk about important issues from just enough of a distance that no one gets their feathers ruffled.
Ally: Where do you get the ideas for your characters? Are any of them named or modeled on real people?
DAN: Most of the characters in my books are archetypes or personality types drawn from my graduate work in psychology. One of my novellas, The End of the World Playlist, has characters from real life in them. In point of fact, everyone in that novel (with some obvious notable exceptions) are people who are quite near and dear to me.
Ally: Now that we know a little more about you and how you write, tell us about the book you brought today.
Book blurb: Set against the backdrop of the tundra and a world desperate for hope, the journey of a young man, E'Malkai, will come to define a realm that has been broken by an evil that does not sleep. A bitter betrayal, and the inception of a war that will consume the world, forces E'Malkai to confront the past and undertake a pilgrimage that is his by birthright. Follow him on his journey and be transformed.
Amazon customer: "The story takes place way in the future on a desolate planet that is filled with scary creatures and people who have obtained magical powers...and the final 100 pages are about the most exciting Sci fi pages that you'll ever read!!"

Coffee Chat with YA Author Andrea Buginsky
Welcome, everyone!
Grab your coffee, tea or other libation and spend a few minutes with us. Andrea Buginsky has joined me this morning. She had a very interesting request for coffee, but since our pot is magical, requests are never a problem. "Green Mountain Coffee Wild Mountain Blueberry with a little French Vanilla Coffee Mate creamer mixed in" is coming right up! While Andrea is getting settled, let's read her bio.
BIO: I have enjoyed writing since I was a kid. When I got to college, I decided to turn it into a career, and earned my BA in Journalism. I have been freelance writing for several years now.
I have always wanted to write a book, and decided I wanted to write for children. I love fantasy movies like "The Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter," so I decided to try my hand at writing one of my own.
My first publication was "The Chosen," a young adult fantasy I worked on for about three years. It was published by Solstice Publishing on December 14, 2010. The second book in THE CHOSEN series, "Nature's Unbalance," was published on July 17, 2012. I am currently editing the third book in the series, and have a concept for the fourth.Ally: I know you've written a very personal non-fiction book, too. Can you tell us a little about that book, why you wrote it, and where our readers could find it?
ANDREA: Thanks for asking. I'm a 37-year-old living with a congenital heart defect. "My Open Heart," is my published autobiography about growing up with heart disease. My hope is that it will give encouragement to young adults growing up with heart disease or other chronic illnesses, as well as parents of children growing up with heart disease. (Amazon link: http://amzn.to/WujlYy)
Ally: We've seen your writer bio and heard about the serious side of your childhood, tell us some frivolous or personal that would never appear in a regular bio.
ANDREA: I was about 2-3 years old when I first saw "Star Wars" in the movies with my family. Legend has it, I began singing "The Sound of Music" during the battle scenes. :) Now, when I watch either movie, I can't help but think of the other. And I love them both!
Ally: Now you have me picturing Darth Vader dancing to the music of "My Favorite Things!" :) Okay, moving on to our chat questions . . . January and February can be dreary months here in the Midwest, how do you make it interesting and productive?
ANDREA: Well, where I live in Tampa, Florida, it doesn't really get that dreary. If anything, it's the opposite: We're wishing for the cold. But on dreary days when it does get cold and rainy, I like to curl up in front of the TV with hot cocoa and watch movies. I'll also read a lot, and play on the computer. I have a lot of fun posting and reading posts on Facebook. I also have an online role-playing game my husband and I like to play together. It's where the idea for "The Chosen" came from.
As for working, I park myself in front of the computer and get lost in cyberspace for a while. Then I look to see if I have any writing assignments from my freelance business. If not, I'll try to work on editing current manuscripts, or writing and adding pages to a new one.
Ally: What secret hobby or down-time activity of yours might surprise your readers?
ANDREA: The only thing I can think of is scrapbooking, although I don't do it that often. But once in a while, I love to pull pictures out and start creating pages. I'll use color paper, glue sticks, stickers, banners, everything I can to make the page. And I always do themes, such as family get-togethers, friendship, love, or pets.
Ally: Thanks for taking time to chat, Andrea. I feel like I know you much better than I did. Before you go, please tell us about your YA fantasy.
Book Blurb:Halli is a shy, young dwarf who has no idea of her true calling. When the evil Prince Gastle sets out to detroy the world of Phantasma, Queen Laurali of the Elves comes to tell Halli she's a Holy Paladin with the power to heal, and will join The Chosen, a group of brave warriors being sent to defeat the evil beast and save Phantasma. Will Halli be accepted by her group, and be able to keep them alive through their adventures? Will the evil Prince Gastle be defeated, freeing Phantasma from his destruction? Only time will tell.

Using the Five Senses To Enrich a Scene
Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil! Aren't they cute? And what good advice--unless you're a writer.
Whether you're a reader or a writer, you know a good scene when you read one. It weaves pictures and feelings into an intriguing story line. One way authors add this depth to their writing is by including the five senses—seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, tasting. It isn't automatic. Most of us write using sight and sound, sometimes use smell, rarely include touch, and almost never mention taste. I have to make a special sensory edit pass on my manuscripts to be sure I've used the senses wherever appropriate.
Consider this sterile crime scene:
She entered the room and found a dead body.
Add Sight: She entered the room, stepping over the splotches of blood that had spilled from the victim's mutilated body.Add Scent: She clasped a hand over her mouth as the sweet, tempting smell of fresh blood caused her fangs to elongate.Add Touch: She licked her lips swollen with sudden craving.Add Taste: She licked her lips swollen with sudden craving, as her mind anticipating the thick, smooth, citrusy taste of human blood sliding down her throat.Add Sound: Pounding footsteps on the stairs brought her back to herself as the rescue squad burst into the apartment. She sighed in relief.
Now this doesn't make the smoothest paragraph when put together, but I think it serves its purpose as an illustration. By the time we've added all the senses, we have a more vivid picture in our head, we know something about how the victim died, and we've learned something about the She who found the body. She is most likely a vampire, who is trying to resist her instinct to feed on human blood and who welcomes the arrival of the rescue squad.
Now, I won't even try to recreate in a photo the images the new scene has formed in your head--each if us will see it a little differently--but I'm willing to bet it includes this!
In addition to more vivid pictures, the expanded scene has slipped in several questions--all unanswered. Why is a vampire there? Why is she resisting her natural instincts? Why was the victim mutilated? Why isn't the vampire worried about being found with the body?
And that's exactly as it should be. Any scene should leave the reader wanting to turn the page to satisfy our insatiable need to know what happens next!
What senses do you as a reader or writer consider the most important? Which ones must be included in any believable scene? Please leave your comments below or find me on Twitter (@ShieldsAlly) to chat about it!

Coffee Chat with YA Author Laura Diamond
Coffee time!
As usual I'm drinking it black. My magic pot has poured Laura Diamond her favorite brew, Dunkin Donuts French Vanilla.
Welcome, Laura! Tell us about yourself.
Bio: Laura Diamond is a board certified psychiatrist and author of all things young adult paranormal, dystopian, horror, and middle grade. Her short story, CITY OF LIGHTS AND STONE, is in the DAY OF DEMONS Anthology by Anachron Press (April 2012). Another short story, BEGGING DEATH, is in the CARNAGE: AFTER THE END Anthology Volume One by Sirens Call Publications. Her Young Adult Paranormal Romance novelette NEW PRIDE and novel SHIFTING PRIDE debuted late 2012 from Etopia Press. She has just signed with Pugalicious Press to publish another Young Adult novel, ZODIAC COLLECTOR, due Winter 2013.
When she's not writing, she is working at the hospital, blogging at Author Laura Diamond--Lucid Dreamer (http://lbdiamond.wordpress.com/), and renovating her 225+ year old fixer-upper mansion. She is also full-time staff member for her four cats and a Pembroke corgi named Katie.
Ally: Now tell us something unique about yourself that isn't in your bio.
LAURA: Unique. I learned horseback riding on thoroughbreds from Saratoga Raceway. A few of them tried to buck me off...repeatedly. On a different topic, I've traveled around the world--Europe, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa. Visiting Machu Picchu is on my bucket list.
Ally: Okay, now to the prepared questions. January seems to be the month for looking back to 2012 and assessing how things have gone. What were your greatest writing achievement and disappointment in 2012?
LAURA: 2012 will live on in my memory as the year I got published. It started with two short stories in separate anthologies, and it ended with my YA para rom novelette, NEW PRIDE, and full length YA para rom novel, SHIFTING PRIDE, being published by Etopia Press in November and December, respectively.
I was disappointed when the small press slated to pub my YA dystopian, ENDURE, closed, but I’ve learned a lot about publishing and am confident ENDURE, too, will be published, either via a small press or independently.
Ally: I'd say that qualified as a great year. So what about 2013? Other than hitting the top of the NY Times Best Seller List, what do you hope for your writing career this year?
LAURA: I hope to continue honing my craft and sharpening my skills. I’m super excited about a YA para rom with witches,
ZODIAC COLLECTOR, which will soon be going into edits with my editor from Pugalicious Press. I’ve also got a sequel, FRACTURED PRIDE, to complete.
Ally: Now that we have all the background, let's see see the book you've chosen to present today.
Blurb for Shifting Pride: Curiosity brings out the Kitty...
Sixteen-year-old Nickie Leone has proof her father is still alive. His watch arrives in the mail, with a note telling her to “keep it hidden,” and her curiosity is piqued. She obeys the request, even keeping it hidden from her mother. But when an email from her father disappears before her very eyes, she begins to question her own sanity.
And things get even more complicated when she meets Xavian Katz, the blue-eyed, blonde hottie whose contagious smile and ridiculous sense of humor make her want to tell him all her secrets. But there’s a current beneath his charm that she can’t quite read. He’s hiding something.
When Nickie grows pointed ears and whiskers…and then a tail!...Xavian (who always seems to knows the right time to be around) seems unsurprised. He’s a shapeshifter too, a coincidence that Nickie can’t deny or ignore. She needs his help to master her new abilities, because her father’s rival, Derek, wants her to join his tribe. The last thing she wants is to be under his rule, but Derek’s got something to do with her dad’s disappearance—she knows it. And maybe letting herself be captured is the best way to find out…

Six Sentence Sunday
It's Sunday again! Time to reveal another snippet from my urban fantasy Awakening the Fire (Guardian Witch #1) which is available at Amazon, B&N and other online stores.
Prior to this scene, Ari, my witch heroine, and Andreas, a vampire, are barely acquaintances and yet terrible circumstances recently led them into a very personal and revealing moment. This is their first meeting since that night.
My 6 sentences:
Andreas was waiting outside when she approached Club Dintero five minutes ahead of the agreed time. From a block away, she saw him leaning against a lamppost, casual, relaxed, as if he could wait forever. Then he saw her and straightened, his figure suddenly purposeful, a sleeping predator awakening.
“Arianna,” he said as she drew near.
She smiled in return, rather uncertain. His dark eyes studied her face, and she finally looked away.
Thanks for stopping by! Hope you enjoyed the teaser. If you click here or on the banner above it will return you to the main site to continue your hop. Have a great weekend!

Coffee Chat with Author Dani-Lyn Alexander
I'm having coffee and chatting with Dani-Lyn Alexander today. We've talked before online but I'm eager to learn more about her. While I pour us a second round of coffee, and add just a dab of milk to hers, let's start out by taking a look at her bio.
Bio: Dani-Lyn lives on eastern Long Island with her husband, three kids, ages twenty-one, thirteen and two (surprise!!) and three dogs. She has always loved working with children, and has worked as a dance teacher and choreographer, directed and choreographed several high school plays, and written a children’s chapter book that will be released soon. She loves to read, and has had a book in her hand since she was about three.Ally: With your love of reading, it sounds like you fit right in on this blog. :) So tell us something you don't normally include in your bio. Do you have a deep, dark secret?
DANI-LYN: Nothing like that, but I did fail one course in school, computers. I absolutely could not understand anything about them, and my final average for the year was a one. That's why I wrote the first half of Trust and Betrayal by hand in a looseleaf binder, before my husband bought me a computer and my best friend taught me how to use Microsoft Word.
Ally: Wow! That just shows how badly you wanted to write. In another few years I'm not sure this electronic generation of kids will know what a looseleaf binder is. But moving on, the next question is more seasonal. Living on Long Island, you're no stranger to cold weather, so I'm sure you have a favorite January comfort food. What is it?
DANI-LYN: My all-time favorite winter food is Cracker Ball Soup. It’s similar to Motzo Ball Soup, but made with Saltine Crackers. I start making it early in the morning, with homemade chicken broth. Then later make and add the Cracker Balls. It’s especially good if I’ve been out in the cold for a while. When I walk in, the house is all warm and toasty from the soup boiling, and the aroma fills the house. I also love the fact that it brings back memories of my childhood, coming in from sleigh riding to a nice warm bowl of homemade soup. It’s my daughter’s favorite food as well, and I hope it brings her the same sense of comfort and good memories that it does me.
Ally: Yum, now I'm ready for lunch! So, to get my mind off food, tell us about your current novel. What is the setting and how did you choose it?
DANI-LYN: Trust and Betrayal is a paranormal romance (suitable for all readers) set in New York City and on Long Island. This was my first novel, and I found it easier to set it in a place I was familiar with. It does take place throughout three different Realms, though, two of which I’ve never actually visited. :)
Ally: That's intriguing. Show us more, including where we can find it.
Book Blurb:Trust is the ultimate weapon in the battle against evil.
Single mother Shay McKeon is no dummy—she’s intelligent as well as street-smart. But when she receives a phone call threatening her children, she rushes headlong into the hands of evil.
Saved from certain death by Mason Constanza, who calls himself a Guardian, Shay is taken to the Realm of Light, where she learns her husband never abandoned her as she’d thought, and that good and evil are nothing like she’d imagined. Learning to deal with her own existence as a Guardian, Shay’s attraction to Mason grows. But she has her own demons to battle, and when her daughter is abducted, she’ll have to trust Mason and his team. But Mason has his own ancient battles to fight…

Coffee Chat with Author Ute Carbone
Welcome, everyone! It's that time again. Ute and I have our coffee poured and are ready to chat. I'm looking forward to something a little more light-hearted than usual. Among other things, Ute writes romantic comedy!
So, tell us about yourself . . .
BIO: I'm a novelist and sometimes poet who lives in Southern New Hampshire. I’ve been married to the same great guy for a lot of years. We have two grown sons. I love hiking, skiing, and generally communing with nature. I'm a big fan of chocolate, theater, and really good stories. I write women’s literary fiction, romantic comedy, and just a bit of romance.
Ally: Interesting life you've led. How about something that isn't in your regular bio?
UTE: Well, let's see. I've wanted to be about everything you can imagine, from a ballerina to a trapeze artist to a rock star. Through my characters I finally became the rock star. Who knows if the others will follow!
Ally: So, tell us about the career you finally chose. What was your road to publication, and how long did it take?
UTE: I’ve been on the road long enough to wear out several pairs of shoes. :) I began by writing poetry, back in the days before e-books and Google. I got a few things published in some small literary magazines. From there, I started teaching creative writing. And I switched to prose writing.
After many fits and starts, I finished a novel. I tried to find an agent, but had no luck. They all seemed to say the same thing: I like your writing, but the market is terrible for new fiction. I got discouraged and stopped submitting. But I didn’t stop writing. Finally, I wrote a romantic comedy. I got an agent and we sent to big houses. No luck and the passes sounded a lot like the agents of old. Sorry, the market is terrible. We’re not willing to take a chance. I went from euphoric to depressed.
I did a lot of soul searching. The market had changed and my approach to it had to change as well. I decided to try small presses. My debut novel (which was actually the fourth book I’d written) came out with Etopia in summer of 2011. Since then, I’ve had two more novels and a novella published. I have contracts for two more full length novels and two shorter works. It’s still a tough slog, there’s lots of promo to do and sales haven’t been great. Yet. But I’m a lot happier than I was in the days of thanks but no thanks. :-D
Ally: I know most authors were avid readers before we were writers, so I'm curious about your current reading habits. What kinds of books do you read? Favorite authors?
UTE: I love to read, and I’ll read just about anything, including the cereal box on the table at breakfast. I write women’s fiction and romantic comedy, so it’s no surprise that my favorite books fall into those categories! I have many favorite authors. On my must-read-whatever-they-come-out-with list are Alice Hoffman, Janet Evanovich, Geraldine Brooks, and Elizabeth Berg. I also love Anita Shreve and Jennifer Cruise. I’ve read most of Jody Piccoult’s books. And that’s just the tip of the TBR pile!
Ally: Wow, it's a wonder you find time to write - but I know you do. Let's look at your book. I love this cover!
Book Blurb:India Othmar isn’t having a great year. Her husband of thirty-one years has left her for their son’s ex-girlfriend. Her grown children have moved home. Her best friend Eva seems determined to set her up with every oddball in their small Massachusetts town. And her most significant relationship these days is with Cherry Garcia.
But India is more resilient than she thinks. And though it will take a broken arm, a lawn littered with engine parts, some creative uses for shoes, and a scandalous love affair of her own, she learns, much to her surprise, that her life hasn’t ended with her marriage.
