Welcome Dellani Oakes - Author of Lone Wolf
Dellani Oakes doesn't claim to be an expert on anything, but she has a lot of experience making something out of nothing. Thrown into the world of publishing six years ago, she found that trying to promote her work was the hardest part of being an author. Since then, she's branched out, lost her inhibitions and faced the publishing world head on.
Would you rather win the
lottery, or end up writing the next big book?
As much as I would love
to win the lotto, if I wrote the next big book, it would validate all the time
and effort I've put into this venture since I started. I know that not everyone
thinks what I do is important or worth the effort. I realize that some members
of my family don't see it as “real work”. Writing a book that is widely
accepted and making real money off it would be fabulous. Do I count on it? No.
I figure I have a slightly better chance of winning the lotto.
What influenced or
inspired you to write?
Ever since I learned how
to talk, I've told stories. When I was three and my sister started school, I
regaled my mother with stories about my friend Snowy Green and Rainbow School.
I progressed from there to short stories & humorous essays. I eventually
embraced play writing in college and fell in love with dialogue. I never lost
that love and I use dialogue in my novels for characterization, plot
advancement, etc. I started writing my first novel in 1988, but have yet to
finish it. It's a story that's worth pursuing – sometime when I have the
patience to dig into it and retype it all. The file is so old, it's save din
MS-DOS on a 5” floppy!
Do you have only one WIP,
or do you bounce around between projects?
I decidedly bounce. I
like variety and my muse tends to be somewhat ADHD, so it loses momentum on one
idea and hops to another. I have many finished projects and many more that
aren't. However, one day, all those stories will be told.
Are you self-taught, or
did you study writing in school?
I guess I'm kind of a
combination. I didn't study writing per se, but I was a theatre major first –
and wrote plays. I went back to school and picked up a degree in Secondary
Education with an emphasis in English.
However, I got my best
background at home. My father was a college English professor. My mom was an
elementary school teacher and both of them wrote – though their work was
non-fiction. My father also edited for the University Press of Mississippi and
I assisted him on editing several books. His knowledge gave me a firm
foundation on the best way to express myself verbally.
If you were going to cast
the main characters of your book, who would get the part?
I have three books out,
so I'd like to share cast of all three.
Indian Summer—historical
romance set in St. Augustine in 1739:
Manuel – Kevin Alejandro
and Gabriella – Emily Browning
Lone Wolf—futuristic
romance (sci-fi adventure):
Wil – Warren Christie and
Matilda – Angelina Jolie
The Ninja Tattoo –
romantic suspense:
Teague – Eric Winter and
Vivica – Sarah Shahi
What would be the last genre you'd ever
consider writing in?
The very last genre that
I would write – Horror. I have far too vivid an imagination and I would give
myself nightmares.
If you could share a
romantic evening with any character from romance literature (any genre),
who would it be and what
would you do to him/her (ahem! With him/her)?
I know this sounds
self-serving, but I would love to spend it with Teague from The Ninja Tattoo.
He's sweet, sexy and (according to Vivica) great in bed. I've had many readers
fall in love with him and I'm half in love with him myself. I'd like to get to
know him better – way better!
What comes first for you:
plot or character?
It varies per story.
Mostly, I get an idea and sit down to write. I am a very organic, free form
writer. I get a starting idea – usually a compelling first line – and run with
it. I don't plot and plan. I don't outline, I don't know where my stories are
going most of the time, but the characters lead me where I need to go.
Dellani once told her publisher that she had enough books, finished & unfinished, to keep him busy for the next 10 years. He didn't believe her, but he should have. Two novels, Indian Summer and Lone Wolf are published by Second Wind Publishing, but she has 42 finished romance novels and at least that many (she won't count them) that are still in the works.
One of the 42, a romantic suspense, The Ninja Tattoo, came out September 24, 2012, from Tirgearr Publishing.
The sequel to Lone Wolf, Shakazhan, is coming soon from Second Wind.
Dellani Oakes is a former A.P. English teacher, photo-journalist. She's an avid reader & reviews the work of others. She hosts two shows for the Red River Radio Network – Dellani's Tea Time the second Monday of each month, @ 4:00 PM Eastern and What's Write for Me, every fourth Wednesday @ 3:00 PM Eastern on Blog Talk Radio.
Indian Summer - In the spring of 1739, Gabriella Deza stands poised on the verge of womanhood. A product of her guarded upbringing, she is naive in the ways of love until dashing Manuel Enriques declares his love for her. By accident, Gabriella uncovers the plot of British spy. Manuel embarks on a dangerous mission to save the town from being overthrown by the British. When Manuel lays an elaborate snare for the spy, Gabriella herself is caught in trap.
Lone Wolf - The year is 3032 and humans have expanded far beyond Earth’s galaxy. Matilda Dulac is a member of the Galactic Mining Guild. With her lover, Marc Slatterly, she works in a small mining ship in deep space. Their well ordered life if suddenly thrown into chaos when one miner arrives with a load of Trimagnite, a highly toxic liquid ore. Enter the Lone Wolf. Wil VanLipsig, known as the Lone Wolf, arrives to take the Trimagnite off their hands. Is it a coincidence for him to show up on Marc’s ship years after Marc thought he’d killed Wil? Or is this the beginning of something far more insidious? The Lone Wolf is book one in Dellani's sci-fi series.
The Ninja Tattoo is a contemporary romantic suspense set in Florida. Teague McMurtry spent the last six years of his life in the Army. Finally having enough of killing, he comes home, thinking he's put the nightmare behind him. When he meets beautiful and sultry Vivica Rambo, he thinks his life is taking a turn for the better. Little does Teague know that he's been targeted for death by a violent biker gang led by Vivica's psychotic older brother. Now Teague must put his skills to the test to protect himself and the woman he loves.

Livia Ellis Q&A
1.
Are you a reader? What are your favorite books?
I am such a huge reader and I love anything
fantasy, YA, paranormal, good old fashioned romance, old school mysteries. I go
through stages. Right now I’m in a Ross MacDonald stage where I’m devouring his
books like an untended buffet of expensive swiss chocolates
2.
What is your path to publication?
I wasn’t planning on being published. I
wrote my first book for myself and a friend of mine and she convinced me to
join RWA and Savvy Authors. She even paid my membership fees for the first
year. Then once I was there she convinced me to do Editpalooza with her and I
had Liz Pelletier as my editor/mentorer and about a month after Editpalooza had
finished she emailed me and asked me to give her a call and offered me a three
book contract for my adult books and I just sort of stood there stunned. I
think the first words out of my mouth was “are you serious? Like really
serious?” Everything after that is history.
3.
How much time do you spend writing each
day/week?
I try to get 20 hours a week in. Some weeks
I get double that, some weeks I get half but 20 weeks is about my average.
4.
How do you work? Are you an island unto
yourself? Or part of a larger community?
I’m very much a lone island when I’m
writing and then part of a community when I edit.
5.
What is your favorite thing about writing? Least
favorite?
Favorite—Writing the rough draft.
Least Favorite – Editing
6.
Are writers born, taught, or both?
Taught. No one is born just magically able
to write. Everyone has to work at it. Shakespeare, Rowling, you name it
everyone had to work to get good at this job.
7.
What would you tell younger and less experienced
you if you could?
I promise you, you may not believe me right
now, but it does get better. Oh and that trip to London you’re going to take?
Make sure you buy a large coffee when you go to the British Museum and chug
half of it before you leave the coffee stand. You’re going to spill the rest of
it all over the man of your dreams.
About Andria:
Patricia's a small town girl who was blessed with a large
tree in the backyard that was a perfect
spot for reading on summer days. Mixed with
too much imagination it made her a bratty child but fated her to
become a storyteller. After a stint of
“thinking practically” in her twenties
she earned degrees in Business and Economics and worked for a
software firm in southwestern Germany
but, her passion has always been a good
book. She currently lives in Pittsburgh with her two wonderful kids and
a husband that learned the gourmet art
of frozen pizzas to give her more time to
write. When she's not writing she can be found fencing and arguing
with her dogs about plot points. Most
days the Beagle wins but the Dalmatian
is in close second. She's in a distant third. Patricia writes adult Paranormal under the
name Patricia Eimer and writes Young
Adult books under the name Andria Buchanan.

1. Are you a reader? What are your favorite books?
I’m constantly reading for inspiration. I’m very eclectic in my tastes;
they run the gambit from sweet romance, to erotic, to horror and science
fiction.
2. What is your path to publication?
I was fortunate to get picked up rather quickly by a great publishing
house: Champagne Books. Hi guys!
3. How much time do you spend writing each day/week?
Depends on the time of year. For ten months I teach so it’s only a
couple of hours a day with at least one full day on the weekend. In the summer,
it’s often full out for weeks on end.
4. How do you work? Are you an island unto yourself? Or part of a
larger community?
I work in total quiet. I need to hear the voices in my head. I take
good direction from my characters!
5. What is your favorite thing about writing? Least favorite?
I love to write. It’s magical and I never feel more alive than when I’m
writing a story. I can’t answer to a least favorite side of it.
6. Are writers born, taught, or both?
Both, I think. You have to want to write, and then you have to practice
the craft to get better at it. They say it takes 10,000 hours to become a
master of a new skill.
7. What would you
tell younger and less experienced you if you could?
That’s easy. Don’t
worry so much. It’s going to work out just fine.

Welcome Emma Right - Author of Dead Dreams

1. Are you a reader? Absolutely. There's not enough hours in a day to read, read, read!
2. What are your favorite books? I read all sorts of fiction! From British classic authors like Dickens and Thackaray to authors like Agatha Christie, Harper Lee, Margaret Maud Montgomery and Laura Ingalls, and contemporary thrillers….I am an eclectic reader in that i enjoy almost all genres. i even enjoy reading cook books! The only genre I don't read are erotica and some really dark noir. It's a personal preference.
3. What is your path to publication? Write,-edit,-write,edit, some more, hire professionals-to edit, to do a cover design, publish, first the e-book, then the paperback version (and there's a lot to learn there) and then book marketing--which is the most time consuming. JA Konrath a traditionally published author but now a self-pubbed ones said in a blog that most times he spends more hours marketing than writing. And I guess I'd have to do the same. Which is a pity because I really enjoy writing the most. But as a self-publisher that's what is expected.
And why did i choose self-publishing?
I find that with e-books and Amazon and accessibility for the writer to publish, it feels silly to spend time and energy wooing an agent, then having to split 15 % of the royalties with that agent, and then, once the agent finds the publisher, the publisher will take another 12 to 24 months to get the book out, and they take about 70-80 percent of the royalties--and that's not too bad, I guess, but the worse is that the traditional publishers nowadays expect the author to promote herself and spend time and money to expand her reach. So why pay for the services of a publisher, right? Yes, it would take a longer time to make a name for myself, and loads of money to market the book and author name, but if an author is in this for the long run --las I am-why not self-publish? It'll take longer, but in 3-5 years I'd reach my audience, at least that's what I'm hoping for.
4. How much time do you spend writing each day/week? I grab any time I can. If I am not doing stuff for my kids, or my pets, or my husband (rare!) I am either writing or reading. So, it's hard to quantify. It could be as often as two-three hours a day to as little as two hours a week! I am a homeschool mother, so my time is limited since I have kids with me 24/7.
5. How do you work? Are you an island unto yourself? Or part of a larger community?
I could be an island, that is my natural tendency, but I force myself to be part of a community, so I would consider myself a peninsula. Hah!
6. What is your favorite thing about writing? Putting my ideas onto paper and sharing this with others. Least favorite? Editing!
7. Are writers born, taught, or both? As I read more about the craft of writing, I feel that it's 99 percent perspiration and one percent inspiration. So, yes, there is that imagination which is intrinsic in a person, but the craft itself can be learned (at least that's what I have read).
8. What would you tell younger and less experienced you if you could? Write a million words, then, read, read, read, and write a great story that's been trying to bust out of you. Read as many books as you can on crafting great fiction that deals with all the elements of a great book. Writer's Digest has plenty and I practically spent thousands of dollars trying to educate myself and soak in as much as I could when I had to re-revise Keeper of Reign, which was my first novel--only about 17 times. And never give up on your dream no matter how many problems life throws at you! If a person is called to write she will know this in her bones, even if it's something she has been pushing aside due to life's commitments. Don't give up. You'll eventually get published if you keep trying.

~ Excerpt ~
They say each dead body, a human corpse, has a scent all of its own, a sweet-sour smell. A cadaver dog picks up the scent as clearly as a mother would recognize the photo of her child. Of course, I wouldn’t know, for I am no dog. I might as well have been, the way I’d stooped to yield to my basic instincts. My mind wandered to her, what her unique smell would be when, and if, they ever were to find her.
After what happened, I decided to write out the events that led to that day and details that might help, in case I’d missed something, or might need it for defense, or in case they found me dead. My relatives might need to piece together the things that had spiraled out of control, if they wanted closure to put me to rest, to forget me altogether. That would be least painful for them. I nodded to myself as I sat in the car. I thought of my most favorite girl in the world: Lilly. At least Lilly’d have my dog, Holly, to remember me by.
My friends used to call me Brie, short for Brianna. But, I could hardly count anyone a friend any more. I’d have to resort to back-watching if I wanted to survive.

I enjoy my kids, they are awesome. I hate the cold but yet live in

Commander of the Queen’s Royal Guard, Eric DeStroia had grown up watching the corrosive, soul-killing effects of arranged, aristocratic marriage and vowed to remain alone. But under his hardened military exterior, Eric has a kind heart. When the second Tetriarch suggests he marry a noble woman rescued from the enemy, Eric reconsiders, consoling himself with visions of sheltering a wounded dove under his mighty arm. Instead, he discovers a fierce falcon that refuses to stoop to his lure.
In the aftermath of their resounding defeat, a survivor from the enemy camp plotted a return to Verdantia to exact retribution. His first objective is the recapture of Lady Sophillia DeLorion. She had been unreachable until she went to the Oshtesh. Now, only Eric DeStroia stands in his way.

Excerpt One:
Commander of the Queen’s Guard Eric
DeStroia tortured the raven–haired courtesan lying beneath him—a
surging thrust in, a prolonged, exquisite slide out. With a husky
laugh, he hung her on the edge of climax for endless minutes. Eric
reveled in her helplessness as he reduced her to abject begging. He
enjoyed their “games”. Who would break first?
Her control finally crashed, swept up
by the tsunami of pleasure he created.
"Please, by all the Gods, Eric,
please. Let me come. I can't take any more."
Smiling wickedly, he rolled them over,
letting her ride. "Take your pleasure."
He clasped her hips and thrust into her
deeply. His strong fingers dented her generous buttocks where he held
her spiked on his steel-hard cock.
Inhaling deeply with a low groan, she
could not disguise her hunger, her impatience. “Shall I take you
with me, lover?”
“Think you can?” He grunted in
amusement and shook his head. “You are too greedy, wench. You can’t
wait.”
Grinding her clit
along his pubic bone, she managed several long rolls, the inner flesh
of her slick vagina massaging his cock with each undulation. With a
groan of effort, he slammed up and held her impaled as his hips
circled. Her eyes flared as the surge of pressure against her most
sensitive parts swept away her dubious control. Writhing, impaled on
his rigid cock, she cried out at the spectacular gratification of a
long withheld orgasm. Her inner core contracted violently around him.
She came forever. He choked on a grunt and finished. She
barely noticed.
“Arrogant, hateful man,” she
muttered, her face buried against his chest. “You might at least
pretend to let me win.”
“I never pretend.”
Limp, she sprawled across his muscled
chest, tracing patterns with a manicured nail. “The rumor is you
plan to take a squadron of the Queen’s Guard to bring back
DeLorion’s sister from the Oshtesh.”
She rolled off his chest, slowly
disentangling their sweaty, delicate parts and lay on her back,
trying to regain her breath. She rolled to her side, petting his
broad chest. “Perhaps your arranged bride will look the other way
if you are discreet.”
“No. When—if—I marry, I
will be faithful. I watched my father kill my mother’s soul with
his philandering. I respect women too greatly to imitate his ways.”
He struggled with his anger. “You are a favorite among the
courtesans,” Eric said. “Your bed won’t be cold.”
With a small moue of disappointment,
she reached out a forefinger and ran it gently up his semi-hard
length glistening with their combined fluids. While his heart
remained indifferent to her charms, she could definitely affect a
lower organ. She caught her lip between her teeth, delighted when his
cock twitched in response.
“But none like you.” She flashed
him a coquettish look and arranged the sheets to cover her small
breasts. “You are an outrageously beautiful man, Commander
DeStroia, with an extraordinary talent for sex. My body will miss
you.”
Eric grunted. “I note you don’t
mention your heart. Come here to me, hussy.”
He shifted to gather her into his arms,
nestling her head across his chest, moving her slender thigh to rest
between his. His hands wandered down her body, stroking muscles that
were tight and firm, skin that felt like satin. The flesh of her
small breast filled his hand. He caught the hard bud of her nipple
and rolled it between his thumb and middle finger. He laughed softly
at her moan of appreciation and moved over her, kneeing her legs
apart and entering her already wet pussy with a gentle glide.
“Please yourself, lover. I don’t
think I can come again.”
“Hmmm, you can’t?” A wicked smile
quirked the corner of his mouth. He kissed her lips, nipping gently.
“You know ‘can’t’ is not permitted,” he whispered against
her mouth. His eyes narrowed. “I give you my promise. You will.”

Sunday Poem: William Shakespeare - Blow, blow, thou Winter Wind
William Shakespeare. 1564–1616
Blow, blow, thou Winter Wind
BLOW, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.
Heigh ho! sing, heigh ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
That dost not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remember'd not.
Heigh ho! sing, heigh ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
Blow, blow, thou Winter Wind
BLOW, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.
Heigh ho! sing, heigh ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,

As benefits forgot:
