Event Description

Join us for the Chiaroscuro Reading Series, Calgary Edition with host Axel Howerton! Featuring:

SARAH L. JOHNSON lives in Calgary, where she coordinates literary events for the city’s oldest indie book store, knits rectangular items, and runs ultra marathons. She does daily battle with curly hair, has a filthy mouth and is at least three years behind on television programming. Her short fiction has appeared in Room, Shock Totem, Crossed Genres, the Bram Stoker nominated Dark Visions 1 (Grey Matter Press), and Year’s Best Hardcore Horror Vol. 2 (Comet Press). Her short story collection, Suicide Stitch (EMP Publishing) was released in 2016, and her debut novel Infractus (Driven Press) is coming in 2017. Find her on Twitter @leadlinedalias or check out her website http://www.sarahljohnson.com/ for inconsistent blogging.

ADAM DREECE kicked off his indie author career with his best-selling steampunk meets fairy tale series, The Yellow Hoods, which struck a chord with kids 9-15 and adults. After four books in the series, the former software architect put out two more young adult books, the post-apocalyptic fantasy book The Wizard Killer – Season One, and then his science fiction novel, The Man of Cloud 9. The first two novels in The Yellow Hoods series, as well as The Wizard Killer, have been finalists for Book of the Year awards from the Independent Author’s Network. Find him at htp://www.adamdreece.com , on Facebook as Adam Dreece, or on twitter @adamdreece

KONN LAVERY is a Canadian horror and dark fantasy writer who is known for his Mental Damnation series. The second book, Dream, reached the Edmonton Journal’s top five selling fictional books list. He started writing fantasy stories at a very young age while being home schooled. It wasn’t until graduating college that he began professionally pursuing his work with his first release, Reality. Since then he has continued to write works of fiction ranging from fantasy to horror. His literary work is done in the long hours of the night. By day, Konn runs his own graphic design and website development business. These skills have been transcribed into the formatting and artwork found within his publications supporting his fascination of transmedia storytelling. Find him at http://www.konnlavery.com/ , on Facebook as Konn Lavery or on Twitter @konnl

Author Interview on TooFullToWrite

I am pleased to be a guest on David Ellis’s blog, TooFullToWrite.com where we chat about why I chose to re-visit the Mental Damnation series and my joy of transmedia storytelling.

Author Interview on TooFullToWrite.com

Here’s the questions we cover:

Let’s start with your volumes that feature under the moniker of the “Mental Damnation” series. Tell us more about the background behind the series, why you chose this specific name for the books as a whole, the trials and tribulations that your lead protagonists face and what directions you see the series going in.
You also have a stand-alone novel called “Seed Me”, which has been favourably compared to “John Dies at the End” by David Wong, which if you like that novel then you are really going to enjoy this particular outing. How does “Seed Me” differ from your Mental Damnation series, what is the particular theme/premise behind it and what can we expect to find in terms of plot and character arcs (no spoilers please, though!)
If any of your novels were to be made into films (or even a TV series), who would you cast in the lead roles?
What do you find the most difficult thing about writing? And what do you find the easiest?
Who are some of the authors and historical figures that inspire you?
What sort of research do you do to write your books?
Why do you write? What inspired you to become a writer?
What keeps you motivated during creative slumps? How do you deal with Writers Block?
You have access to a time machine. What advice would you give to your younger self?
How do you spend your free time when you are not writing?
Tell us more about your upcoming projects. Are you working on anything specific or have plans in the pipeline?
Finally, are there any nuggets of wisdom that you can impart to other aspiring writers?

Author spotlight on the Booknatics blog

I am pleased to have been a guest on the Booknatics blog discussing the release of Mental Damnation: Reality, second edition.

Author Spotlight on the Booknatics Blog

We cover the following topics:

From our understanding, this book is a second edition of a retired version. Was the process of re-writing an entire series a quick and easy one for you–or were there some struggles?
What was your inspiration to write in your chosen genre?
Do you have any certain quirks while you write? For example, a certain space for writing, any music playing in the background, etc.?
Do you put “Easter Eggs” in your books that only your close friends will know to find? Perhaps, maybe some true events that may have happened to you or someone you know.
For fun: Can you describe this book using only two words?
For your Mental Damnation series, did you have to do any research? If at all, maybe some research enlightened you on something new and even inspired an event or two in your book or any future writing?
How many unfinished stories do you have stashed away? If any, do you think you will finish writing them?
What books do you like to read when you’re not writing?
The first ever story you’ve ever written: What was it about and has anyone else read it?
Now that you are an experienced author: If you could give your younger-self just one tip on writing, what would it be?

Calgary Comic Expo 2017 – Self-Publishing Talk

Beth Wagner and Konn Lavery discuss self-publishing novels and comics

The first expo of 2017 started off with a bang. I was a part of two panels and four days of costumes, comics and pop culture! It was an opportunity to showcase the new edition of Mental Damnation: Reality and Seed Me. Both of these novels were not available at last year’s con.

The very first day was when Beth Wagner and I hosted a Journey to Self-Publishing talk, similar to the one we did at the Edmonton Comic Expo 2016. It was kept in a Q&A styled format, allowing the audience to ask any questions that they were seeking insight for.

Four Days of Calgary Comic Expo 2017

After the first panel on the first day, the rest of the convention was fairly busy compared to last year. The booth was kept on the second floor of the Big Four building, where they happened to also put Stan Lee and Tod McFarlane. This drew in a lot of traffic during the days that they were there.

The Saturday had the most costumes of the four days and I snagged as many photos as I could while chatting with people. Check out some of the costumes shared below.

Sunday was the second panel where I joined authors Adam Dreece and Ron S. Friedman in another freeform Q&A styled panel titled Want to Pursue Your Dreams of Writing. The panel was well received and it was a pleasure to catch up with audience after the panel to discuss more about writing.

Over the four days I was able to catch up with familiar faces such as horror author Matthew GIllies, who we shared a booth and a panel together last year. Reg of SANE Clothing, and Vince Seim / Chance Clark of the H3 trilogy, among many other artists, authors and vendors. The con is so large it was tough to try and find everyone, but hoping to catch up with more and meet new people at the Edmonton Comic Convention in the fall.

I’ve got many more stops throughout the spring and summer before then, so keep watch on the blog for more announcements!
