We Have a Title!

As a clergywoman and author -- and also a survivor of sexual assault and clergy sexual misconduct -- I feel called to lend my voice to the ongoing conversations about sexual assault within the church, stimulated by the #MeToo movement. How has the church got it wrong, and what resources can we draw upon to respond differently? I approach my subject by telling stories -- current true stories, as well as long-ago biblical stories.

Art Giving Voice to #MeToo

One of the blessings of being a writer is connecting with other creative persons exploring similar topics. An artist named Cheryl Prose makes #MeToo art pieces. One is based on my memoir,

Eugene Peterson, Rest in Peace, Rise in Glory

Years later, after I finished my memoir, I wrote to him that he inspired me, and sent him an advance copy of RUINED. I was thrilled beyond measure when he offered an endorsement, calling it a story of "lived theology." He told me that he and his wife read my book aloud

Coloring the News

What a week this has been with Christine Blasey Ford's testimony for the Kavanaugh hearings! The Christian Century asked me to write a blogpost for them, so I did. It's available here: Racism, Sexual Predators, and My Experiences with Both.

PEI & Nova Scotia, revisited

Our recent trip to Newfoundland reminded me of our 2010 trip to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, which I remember fondly. I had blogged that trip quite thoroughly, so I went through those posts and cleaned them up — software updates over the years had added stray characters. Now the posts are readable again. […]

A Memoir for Anyone Who Has Loved and/or Left a Church

I'm so glad Barbara said Yes to this book! It's a memoir of her first year in ordained ministry, which she came to after a career as an academic. She served a Lutheran church in a struggling blue-collar neighborhood in Baltimore. Barbara brings so many lenses to her experience

Newfoundland: Wind, Whales, Puffins, Gannets, Cod!

A stone's throw from the tip of that point is the Bird Rock, out in the ocean, and literally covered with birds — gannets, murres, kittiwakes. The sound of the foghorn, the various pitches of the birds' cries and calls, the constant movement of their circling and hovering, the way the rock itself seemed alive with feathered bodies jostling, preening, pooping, landing -- it was a full-body experience that's hard to convey.

Newfoundland: Wind, Whales, Puffins, Gannets!

What have you done to restore your soul this summer? I hope you’ve carved out a bit of down-time. I was so fortunate to take a 2-week trip to Newfoundland with my husband, Doug. Here are some highlights and photos from the first week. Day One — St. Johns — “Newfoundland Time” When we flew […]
