Writing Round up 2019

NaNo’s pretty much over for another year – didn’t pass, and I cheated like mad; working on last year’s project as well as a short story as well as a new project.
The Short: Had an idea months ago; haven’t had time to work on it beyond a few scenes. Taking a break from the other two projects was just what this writer needed, it’s too long and a little tone deaf at times, but R.J. Hore is betaing it as we speak. I have another short I’d like to finish by year end, for an anthology, so goal...

NaNoWriMo 2019

So I’m not quite sonw updating today’s wordcount yet, but I’m almost at 30k with like a week to go. I’m on days as I write this, so I’ll have a little bit of more time to push to the end on my nights/days off.
The original goal was to finish last year’s project, Chimera, as well as get as much as I could into Rogue Healer 3, which really doesn’t have a good working title. I know it seems like I’m always busy, and I am – I’ve been recovering from this back injury and I finally got my...

Editing, NaNoWriMo, and thoughts on a certain Kitty Cat

Chilling out, handing out candy. Hating the fact that that I haven’t submitted my sequel to Witchslayer’s Scion to the publisher. I have less than twenty pages to go: and I haven’t finished it.

So Thanksgiving in Canada takes place in October, I’m told it’s because we have an earlier harvest season than the US but I always find it’s dueling with Halloween in popularity. We here in Manitoba had a heavy snowstorm that weekend, and apparently more than 100,000 people or homes were without power. I...

Cover Reveal – Dreams of Mariposa

If you’d had asked me ten years ago if my second published novel was going to be a Steampunk-Horror, I’d probably have laughed.  Me likey a lot this one; granted if you looked at all on my Pinterest Page for the images I associated for Dreams of Mariposa, it goes right into creepsville from the get go.  This one looks soft and menacing at the same time. Fits the viewpoint character.

This one’s target demographic will be quite a bit different from Tower of Obsidian as well. Don’t get me wrong – I think if you like...

I moved! / When projects go awry

If you’ve been following along on Facebook, you’ll already know that I finally found a house and have moved to Elie, Mb. Not terribly far from the PMQ in Southport, as my job hasn’t changed. I’ve been house hunting for the last two years, and came close to building, because the area I wanted to live in didn’t have a ton of houses, and in any given year, not that many people were apt to move. Building would have been fun, but the least practical option, and I’m all about practicality now.

The...

Criticism in the Digital Age

So in the past couple of weeks, two major series have concluded – Avengers: Endgame hit theatres, as well Game of Thrones finished. A prequel series for GoT is in the works and apparently Marvel is moving on to Phase 4 with no end in sight. I haven’t seen either – and let’s just say that public opinions are high on both of them.
This isn’t about how to criticize, or what makes for a good review. It’s about behaving in an online space where you’re interacting with fellow fans, creators, and ot...

Game of Thrones and Adaptation; Bursting with Books Events

I don’t have a finalized list of events where R.J. Hore, Larry Flewin and I will be selling books yet. Stay tuned, but if you’re in the Winnipeg-ish area, we’re potentially getting a last minute table at the Mother of Dragons Craft Sale. I only told Ron about it two weeks ago – I’ll be surprised if we’re in. I’ll post a list as soon as more is finalized. Keycon is a go, and I need to switch some shifts around to be at several events.

Editing is going slower than anticipated, but I am making g...

Dear Future Self; A Song of Ice and Fire

I know my publication record’s not been great – I’ve talked before about self publishing and while I have had two books under contract for the past two years, I haven’t been able to formalize any release dates. I get a bit of flack from other writers I see at shows, asking why it’s been at least five years since ToO’s release, why I haven’t really gotten anything else out.

The short answer is that I have been writing, but I’ve been a bit anal about the editing process. Not counting the two pr...

Review of Alita: Battle Angel

I got interested when I watched this.

That girl reminded me of my niece. So I took my niece to go see the film. Nervous as heck that it was going to be too gross for her. She really enjoyed it.

I also know nothing about the source material. I saw a 90 second clip from youtube from the anime after I got home from the film because you show a few people the trailer, Youtube reads you or something. So don’t ask me how it fairs compared to the source material.

Overall, think of it like high-end...

Coming of Age

I’ve always been the aunt who gives books (not mine!) for Christmas or birthdays. It became a cliche after a while. A few years ago, my niece shook her Christmas present and was like, “I wonder what it is – Lego and a book!” I responded with, “You’re sure?” She replied, “That’s what you always do!”

My sister was never as keen on reading as my parents were to us, so I tied in vain with a variety of good quality chapter books to get them to read. (Archie Comics, however, seem to do the initial...
