Review of Untethered by Katie Hayoz

Tremendous!
*As spoiler-free as possible*
Phenomenal story with a build up that leaves you hanging on every single word. This book intrigued me beyond belief.
Characters : All are wonderful, real characters you can relate with in many ways. Sylvie. Oh, where to begin! I just wanted to jump in the book and give her a big hug. She really has some of the worst luck—everything from ill-timed allergic reactions to being the odd girl who ‘faints’ at random. It’s like life just keeps slapping her in the face left and right. You just want something to go right for her—something, anything! On top of it all, her best friend, Cassie, has blossomed into a real beauty, leaving Sylvie feeling terribly insecure. And if you’re not like Cassie, high school can be a nightmare that stays with you pretty much the rest of your life. What I dearly loved was watching Sylvie’s progression from an insecure teenager into someone who finally accepts herself for who she is—someone who is far more beautiful than she gives herself credit for. And, boy, does Sylvie learn some valuable lessons in rather shocking ways along this journey of self-acceptance! As for Cassie…ugh…I was so torn! See, Cassie develops a strong connection with the guy who Sylvie’s been in love with for years. Right off the bat, I’m like, ‘Cassie, there is such a thing as the BFF code! You just don’t go there!’ But here’s the thing: There’s more to Cassie than meets the eye. Kevin—Sylvie’s crush who is now pursuing her bestie, Cassie—has those popular guy good looks. Unfortunately, Kevin has some less than desirable friends…and one in particular makes you question whether Kevin is really a good guy or not. I didn’t know what to make of Kevin until the very end. Then there’s Nelson. Yeah, we love Nelson. Oh, he is such a sweetheart! Nelson is the invisible guy who simply wants to be visible…to one girl in particular.
World & Story : Katie does a masterful job of tugging on every little bit of your heart. The school life is detailed so beautifully that I probably could’ve had a panic attack thinking about my own high school experience. Every dirty look, cruel name, embarrassing moment—it was so very real. However, my favorite parts were the astral trips—they were intense, vivid, and exciting. Seriously, it was the next best thing to flying on a broom, Harry Potter style.
Overall : Gritty, raw, real, true to high school life—true to the core of what it means to learn and accept who you are in this world. Another phenomenal treat for the reader: when you really let yourself sink into the story, it’s almost as if the reader has accomplished Astral Projection. We hover over Sylvie, Cassie, Kevin, and Nelson; we wave our arms and try to help them, only they can’t hear or see us. It’s a neat little twist for the reader. Katie has written a truly unforgettable story of self-acceptance, self-worth, and finding the strength to embrace all that you are.
Rating (yeah, I’m holiday-obsessed, so I rate by snowmen. I’m also a giant dork):

Review of Mary Hades by Sarah Dalton

*As spoiler-free as possible*
The story of Mary Hades is dark, moving, at times incredibly humorous, and, all together, profoundly beautiful.
Characters : Adored all of them! Mary, our main character, is just fantastic. She wears the weight of the afterlife on her shoulders, and she does so with grace, strength, and humor. Lacey is her BFF, who just so happens to be a ghost. I can’t say enough about Lacey. I. Love. This. Character. She is fun, spunky, snarky, and witty. Seth, who is Mary’s love interest, is one mysterious guy…and, oh, I loved him. Everything about Seth is subtle; his character draws you in—you can’t help but be intrigued by this guy. The incredibly shocking twists and turns with his character will create an emotional roller coaster ride for your emotions. I really, really, really hope to see much more of him in future books. Neil was another wonderfully rich character that I’d love to see in future books. Mary’s mom—loved her! I could go on and on about how much I loved the characters, truly.
World & Story : Sarah has created a story that makes the reader feel like they’ve boarded a demonic Ferris wheel. There are so many emotional highs and lows in this beautifully paced tale that is written to perfection. Sarah’s ability to cut right to the heart of a situation and pull you in with the characters is impeccable. I loved being transported to the English countryside; I honestly felt like I was right there—at the fair, walking through the moors, sitting (or hanging from) the Ferris wheel.
Fear Factor : I’m kind of a fraidy cat and not ashamed to admit it (okay, well, maybe a little ashamed). Mary Hades was just scary enough to make the hairs on my arm stand up, but not so scary that I was afraid of any little pop and creak in the house. Without giving too much away, I felt that the conclusion of the story, though intense, was gracefully written, especially given the circumstances surrounding the tragic story of little Amy. So, in other words, this is the perfect book for those who like scary stories, but are also fraidy cats like me.
Overall : A perfectly creepy, yet emotional ride as the present and the afterlife collide in an unforgettable way. Tremendous start to a series I literally cannot wait to read more of.

Review of Silver Tides by Susan Fodor & Giveaway

More, please!
*As spoiler-free as possible*
The story begins when a wonderfully witty, kind, fiercely loyal outsider suddenly finds herself in the unenviable position as the newly anointed ‘popular girl in school’ after saving the life of a mysterious, handsome stranger. What follows is one jaw-dropping revelation after another.
Characters : Loved them all. A few standouts for me include Mya, John/Daniel, and Charlie. Mya, the main character, just screams ‘huggable.’ She wears her heart on her sleeve, is 100% loyal to her loved ones, and wants to do what’s right and just. So huggable! John/Daniel is Mya’s leading man and is quite the charmer. Then, there’s Charlie. I’m just going to say it: I’m a total Charlie fangirl. LOVE this character so much! He’s got the perfect mix of smart-alecky fun and endearing charm.
World & Story : Susan has created a deep, dark, layered world where the creatures are at odds and the characters find themselves caught between love, history, and family obligations. I’m looking forward to spending more time in these supernatural societies as the series progresses.
Overall : Wonderful character connections, intriguing mythology…and an incredible ending that will leave you gasping. Rating (yeah, I’m holiday-obsessed, so I rate by snowmen. I’m also a giant dork):
