Guest Post from Lorenz Font, Author of TORMENTED
I am very pleased to host Lorenz Font today. Lorenz is the author of Tormented, the second installment of The Gates Legacy, and she's kindly answered some questions about her characters. Please welcome her, check out her book, and make sure to enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below, as well!
Because this is a multi-volume series, we get to know several of the characters in depth. Please discuss why you chose to highlight the characters you did.
Let’s see, my answer is going to sound a bit scattered so please bear with me. I will start with story’s conception. When I first came up with the concept for Hunted, it never dawned on me that I’d be looking at more than one book. Harrow and Jordan, the two main characters, were so alive in my head that anyone they associated with came to life. Harrow’s first contact with Tor, our main focus in book two, was so animated that each scene practically wrote itself. Then when I needed a teacher for Jordan and Rohnert came into the picture, I knew then that I had a trilogy on my hands.
Certain characters talk to me at different times so I make sure that they have their fifteen minutes of fame. Harrow is a born leader despite his earlier reputation for being a weakling among his peers. He is compassionate and level-headed. So he brings that take-charge type of guy to the trilogy. Tor, on the other hand, is a smart mouth and tends to act before thinking things over. He brings fun into the mix, but make no mistake, the man packs enough punch to leave you giggling and at the edge of your seat. Rohnert is more of a reluctant character who will shine later on. He prefers to sit in the shadows and observe. His reluctance to help at first adds more intensity to the character. There is a certain charisma to the silent-but-deadly type that is compelling to write.
Now we come to the female leads. So far we have Jordan from Hunted. Who doesn’t want a strong female lead? She knows what she wants, and she’ll do whatever it takes to get it. She’s all about vengeance until a little girl altered her course. Then there’s Allison, our rich and glamorous daughter of the Tack Enterprise mogul. She is not built to fight, which gives me an interesting character to build up. Slowly, we see the changes in her, her mindset and her priorities. Lastly, there is Shelly, another strong female character who is no-nonsense and can stand nose-to-nose with the hardasses in the facility.
What are the qualities, challenges, and significance that each of the central characters bring to the overall story that make them good main characters?
Harrow’s sympathetic nature makes him a relatable character. Someone we want to cheer on. Tor’s knack for thorny but realistic commentaries shows how people react to certain situations. Like some of us, he uses humor to adapt or as a way to cope. Rohnert’s silence often leads others to believe that his loyalty lies elsewhere. On the contrary, he is loyal to a fault, and his introverted quality makes him unpredictable, which also makes him a force to reckon with.
Weakness is a challenge to write. If a character has flaw, it makes them more susceptible to mistakes. I’m a firm believer that people aren’t born malicious or evil. There is always a reason that drives people to commit atrocities. Let’s focus on Melissa. Being the female protagonist, she is written as a smart, beautiful, and lethal character. She is driven and would carry out orders without question. But she is also vulnerable because of love. In the end, this will be her downfall and also her redemption.
And because you aren't afraid to kill main characters, how do you think the real possibility of character death affects the readers' experience of the book?
It’s either they would hate or love the story. It makes them consider that anything is possible and nothing is predictable. I like for the readers to remember even though the main characters are important, that death won’t spare them. Each death is written to affect the progression of the story. In the case of The Gates Legacy, it also drives the other characters to step up and shine. If the plot calls for a particular character’s demise, then I won’t hesitate to make that choice (insert evil laugh here). Death is not purposely written just to stun the readers but to emphasize the development of the plot.
Summary:
Tor Burns is a non-infected vampire who has taken refuge in the Tack Enterprises underground facility. Having survived a vicious attack with his fellow vampire Harrow, he now has a new purpose. Vampires afflicted with Gates Syndrome are still being hunted, and Tor is committed to saving them from the clutches of the Vampire Council. With a semi-cure within their grasp, Tor is reluctant to accept his new assignment: bodyguard to Allison Tack, the daughter of their fallen leader. Armed with an abrasive personality and fierce loyalty, Tor approaches this new responsibility with serious determination despite his reservations.
Vampire Allison Tack is the beautiful and timid co-heir of the Tack fortune. Infected and hunted by the Council, those lucky enough to have known her father are determined to keep her safe. A walking target wherever she goes, Allison wants to learn how to protect herself, but no one is listening. Sick of being the helpless one in the company of trained fighters around her, Allison vows to prove that she can fight alongside the best of them.
Meanwhile, the harem leader, Melissa, is hell-bent on unraveling any clue about her son Demetrius’s fate. He disappeared without a word, and time has made her desperate. Stepping up her efforts, she seeks the help of Demetrius’s son, Zane. With the additional manpower, Melissa finds the lair of the suspected vampires and wages war against them.
Thrown together by necessity, Tor and Allison can’t continue to deny their attraction to each other. Tor wants to give in to his feelings for her, but old demons resurface. He must confront the past to prevent losing the best thing that ever happened to him.
A life must be given for a life taken. Will Tor have to sacrifice himself before Allison pays the price?

Guest Post from Lisa Bilbrey, Author of THE JOURNEY TO A NEW LIFE
Today, I am pleased to host guest blogger Lisa Bilbrey. Lisa is discussing her latest release, The Journey to a New Life. Please welcome Lisa, and be sure to check out her links and exciting Rafflecopter drawing below!

The first is his journey back to Texas. Going home is never an easy task, and Travis learns immediately that things weren’t as they seemed. After all, dirty little secrets never stayed hidden for long. Not only does Travis worry about the reaction his return will bring, but he’s bitter and angry over the end of his career, or what he considers to be his life. It’s in this moment of desperation, however, that Travis sees just what his selfish behavior has cost him.

The second part of The Journey Collection is The Journey of Champions. One of the key themes in Travis’s story is the end of his career. In The Journey of Champions, Travis leaves

Now, you may be asking why I choose to tell his story in so many smaller parts. Truth be told, it just felt right. Each part of Travis’ life impacts the next, gives him the strength to face each new challenge, and makes him the strong son, husband, and father he was always meant to be. The Journey Collection is about love, faith, hope, and family.
MORE ABOUT THE JOURNEY TO A NEW LIFE...
Summary—Travis McCoy’s journey has led him down a road of changes where he found the love of his life and their child. Travis, Penelope, and Max have struggled during their time apart, found their way back home, and finally tied their lives together as a family. Now, Penelope and Travis find themselves on a new journey, one that leads them to the greatest journey of all.
Excerpt—
At the brink of dusk, Travis held his arm out to Nadine. She smiled and slid her fingers around his bicep, clutching onto him. They were standing at one end of a covered bridge in Brandenburg Park, at the base of the Red River Ski Area, while Russ, Max, and Penelope stood at the other end. They had placed lanterns and candles along the way to offer a soft, sensual ambiance. “Are you ready, Nadine?” Travis asked, looking down at the woman who had captured his father’s heart. “More than ever.” She smiled. The two of them started across the bridge at a slow pace. In two years, so much of Travis’s life had changed. After an injury ended his professional football career, he had come home to face his past. At the time, Travis had been prepared to fight with his father about the choices he’d made, yet somehow they had been able to rip off the bandages and expose their wounded souls to one another. With everything out in the open, Travis and Russ had begun to mend their tattered relationship and were now closer than they had ever been. Travis shifted his attention to Max. He had been the person who brought them all together. Max had come barreling into Travis’s life with a bounce in his step and a positive outlook on life that most ten year olds didn’t have. The moment Travis looked from the boy to Penelope, he’d known Max was his son. At first, he had been angry that he’d missed out the chance to be a father to Max, but when Penelope explained why she hid his son from him, he understood. Travis had been so wrapped up in achieving his dream of becoming a star football player that Penelope had been afraid of telling him she was pregnant for fear of him resenting her for taking away his dream. As much as he had wanted to deny her claims, Travis couldn’t. He wouldn’t have abandoned her or their child, but he could admit that a part of him would have grown to resent her for trapping him in a life that he had never wanted — or that he hadn’t thought he wanted. At eighteen, he was too dumb to know that he could have had everything. None of that mattered now, though. Travis had allowed himself to love Penelope again, to be the man she’d always known he was meant to become. He became Max’s father, someone for him to admire and strive to emulate. Travis’s life had endured a couple of bumps in the road, but in the long run, he was right where he was supposed to be: on a covered bridge, walking his soon-to-be step-mother down the aisle so she could marry his father. “Wow, honey, you look amazing,” Russ said as Travis and Nadine stopped in front of him. Travis took Nadine’s hand and placed it in his father’s. Shifting his eyes up to Russ’s, Travis told him, “Just love her.” “I do, boy, I do,” Russ replied.

Guest Post by Stephanie Fleshman, Author of RENDER

Guy #1: The Broken and Vulnerable
When I think of broken, I think of Josh from Barry Lyga’s Boy Toy. The sad thing about Josh is that he knows he’s broken but blames himself instead of the person at fault. When I think of vulnerable, two characters come to mind: Sam from Maggie Stiefvater’s Wolves of Mercy Falls series and Cabel from Lisa McMann’s Wake series. Cabel is doused with gasoline, then set on fire by his alcoholic father. He wants to be loved, yet is scared. What makes him strong in a not-in-your-face kind of way is that he wants to love. His lack of resentment and hate is what makes him attractive.Guy #2: The Abusive
In Jennifer Brown’s Bitter End, Cole is the product of “like father, like son.” In Swati Avasthi’s YA novel Split, however, Jace is the product of being victimized by his own abuser. Unlike Cole, Jace is capable of remorse and guilt. He not only owns up to his actions, but he wants to pay for them. By comparison, Jace makes Cole look like a sociopath.Guy #3: The Obsessive
It’s no secret that Edward from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga is borderline stalker when it comes to Bella. She is his world entirely. In his mind, though, he is only being protective. So, is Edward protective, overprotective, or obsessive? You decide: Protective: Capable of or intended to protect someone or something. Overprotective: Having a tendency to protect someone, esp. a child, excessively. Obsessive: Of, relating to, characteristic of, or causing an obsession; Excessive in degree or nature.Guy #4: The Dominant
A good example of this type of YA male lead character is Patch from Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush series. Patch is 100% boy. He’s self-confident, strong, and stands his ground against Nora. Though he is dominating, I don’t believe it’s in a harmful or abusive manner. In the second book, you get to see more into his heart as he begins to really care for Nora’s well-being. By the third book, he’s thinking of Nora’s safety and how he can stay with her. He sacrifices what he wants in order to protect her and their relationship, which seems non-existent to Nora by this stage. Not everything is what it seems, though. Other good examples are Alex from Simone Elkeles’s Perfect Chemistry and Avi from the same author's How to Ruin series.Guy #5: The Lovable
I’m going to start with Koldan from my own YA novel, Render. Koldan is firm but not so dominating that he feels the need to control. He’s confident and strong, but recognizes his weaknesses. He’s romantic in the sense that he will do whatever it takes to keep Raya safe, even if it means risking his own life. And he’s not afraid to show his feelings for Raya. Now, I cannot move forward without mentioning Holder from Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. Thirteen years! Thirteen!!! That’s all I’m going to say. Those of you who have read Hopeless know exactly what I’m talking about. For those of you who haven’t, there’s nothing about this guy not to love. Now I've got a question for you: What's your favorite YA male character type?

Blog Tour for new release ILLICIT AFFAIRS
Illicit Affairs Written by:Jo MatthewsBec RoseNJ Cole

Illicit AffairsIllicit Affairs is a compilation of three erotic tales with women giving into their darkest desires and pursuing the forbidden.

Unexpected Journey by Jo MatthewsSarah thought she met her soul mate in Mitch Chandler. High school sweethearts, they married right after graduation. Eight years later, he is a stranger to her and their marriage is on the rocks. In a halfhearted attempt to placate her, Mitch suggests a trip to Hawaii, but schedules a business meeting to write off the expense.Aaron Johnson, Mitch’s friend and business partner, agrees to help with the presentation and plans are made for all three to go. What happens when Mitch backs out at the last minute to spend a romantic weekend with his secretary, forcing Aaron’s hand so that he has to accompany Sarah alone? Will an innocent friendship turn into something more as Aaron’s attraction for Sarah grows? How will Sarah manage when she realizes that Aaron is awakening feelings in her that she’s never felt before? The sexual tension burns hot as these two embark on an unexpected journey that neither are prepared for.
Excerpt:The flight to San Diego was quick, though the one to Hawaii was considerably longer. Somewhere over the Pacific, Sarah fell asleep; the day had obviously taken a toll on her emotions and exhausted her. I wasn’t really tired myself, so I grabbed a magazine from the caddy in front of me and started flipping through it. Not ten minutes later, she shifted in her sleep and leaned over, her head resting on my shoulder. I froze in place, unsure of what to do. Part of me was screaming to wake her up or at least move her, while the other part of me—the part that tended to take over in any man when there was a sexy goddess nearby—wanted me to savor the moment. I must have warred with myself for three minutes straight until I decided it didn’t matter. There was no harm in letting Sarah sleep on my shoulder on a plane to Hawaii. No harm at all, considering her husband was the one who put us on the flight together.Unable to resist any longer, I turned my head into her hair and breathed in her intoxicating scent. She smelled like wildflowers and sunshine, and I couldn’t help but inhale more deeply as I closed my eyes.
About the Author:Jo Matthews is an Arizona native, where she lives with her husband and son. A stay-at-home mom since 2007, she only recently discovered her love and passion for the written word. Author Links:Facebook | Twitter | Blog | Goodreads Hot Summer Nights by Bec RoseAnnie Murphy had the picture perfect life. A beautiful home, a wonderful son, and a husband who adored her. It was every woman’s dream until her husband of over twenty years came out of the closet, leaving her a forty-five year old divorcee struggling to regain her confidence. Needing a distraction, she agrees to allow her son’s friend, Jamie, to spend the summer at her house while working as an intern. When Jamie, the cute female intern she’d been expecting turns out to be Jaime, the hot male intern with abs to drool over, it kicks Annie’s fantasies into overdrive. When she realizes that her desires are not one sided, it’s more than the temperature that causes some hot summer nights.
Excerpt:It seemed like forever before he finally made his way back downstairs, and I heard him rummaging through the fridge for something before he walked into the den carrying some homemade chocolate mousse. I moved to the main sofa, sitting down next to him so we were both within reach of the dessert.“I hope you don’t mind, but I made this before dinner. I have a bit of a sweet tooth.” He grinned at me as he took a bite. I smiled back and dipped my spoon in, groaning at the amazing taste that exploded in my mouth when I took my first bite.“Oh, god, Jaime, you’re going to make me fat if you cook like this all the time,” I laughed. When I heard no reply, I looked next to me, seeing Jaime staring at my lips with—if I wasn’t completely misinterpreting it—a look of lust in his eyes.“Oh, um, I’m sorry?” He seemed confused.“I just said that you’re going to make me fat if you keep cooking like this.”“You don’t have to worry about that, Annie. You have an amazing figure if you don’t mind me saying.” I was surprised by his comment. It had been a long time since anyone had complimented me like that.“Oh, well, um…thank you, Jaime,” I replied, embarrassed. We finished off the dessert, both of us silently deciding to stay on the couch next to each other by settling back as Jaime changed the channel to watch an old movie. It was nice to sit with someone and not feel the need to fill the air with unnecessary conversation. Jaime was easy to just be with, and I was once again glad it had turned out to be a male houseguest instead of a female.

Second Chances by NJ ColeCalla Moretti married her college sweetheart, Bill. Married life was great at first, but as his career had her dropping out of college and moving away from her family and friends, Calla struggled with her role as a wife and homemaker. Stress due to infertility and Bill’s affairs, had the marriage on the brink of failure. When she drives home in the middle of a thunderstorm and spots first a broken down motorcycle, then the sexy rider, she decides to take a chance and offer him assistance. Realizing fate brought her together with a man who could give her the one thing her husband couldn’t—a baby—Calla decides to take a chance. One romantic night, one big lie, will it save her marriage or fill her heart with more emptiness? Will this be the answer to her prayers? In life, are there truly second chances?
Excerpt:Staring into my eyes, he lowered his head. I could have moved, spoken, coughed…anything, but instead I lifted my chin and allowed him to kiss me. At first it was chaste, it really was, but when I didn’t pull away, he didn’t either. I felt his tongue poke from between his velvet lips and lick over my lower one. I gasped, and he used that opportunity to find his way into my mouth. As my body began to shake, I groaned. I had to stop this. If I didn’t, I’d end up having sex with him—a total stranger. I knew that because I was ovulating, if I did sleep with him, there was a good chance that I’d become pregnant.I’d become pregnant.I had stiffened up at my epiphany, causing him to pull back. “Oh, shit. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”My mind was racing with the possibility of becoming pregnant tonight. I could go home to Bill in the morning and he and I could have sex. He’d think the baby was his, and maybe it would be, I reasoned with myself. He’d never know and our marriage would be fixed.

Interview with Jennifer Garcia, author of MY MR. MANNY

As part of her blog tour, Jennifer Garcia, author of My Mr. Manny, stopped by to talk about her new release from Renaissance Romance Publishing. Make sure to enter her Rafflecopter giveaway below!
Q: Tell us a little bit about how the idea for this story got started.
A:I received a writing prompt about a manny, male nanny, and the idea grew from there.
Q: What do you feel is the biggest lesson your main characters learn from their experiences in this story?
A:People can mistake one thing for another and things happen for a reason.
Q: How important was setting to the plot of the story?
A:At first, the setting was chosen because of my knowledge of it. However, it soon turned into part of the story. The main character, Mia left her home and family to live with her father and that is sort of what brings her into the heart of the story.
Q: What is the significance of the title? What prompted you to choose it?
A: I thought something along the lines of a male Mary Poppins, and I don’t know, My Mr. Manny sort of popped into my mind.
Q: Do you enjoy incorporating a child character into your books? What do you think that brings to the main characters’ relationship that might otherwise be absent?
A:This particular plot needed a child in order to have a manny, but in the end I did enjoy it. I only have boys so I wanted to write a little girl, and I did enjoy it so much. Mia’s precious little girl, Lucia, became the main love in her life. Lucia gave Mia family, and, indirectly, brought her the manny.
Q: Luke Skywalker or Han Solo?
A:Luke Skywalker all the way.
Q: Which secondary character was the most fun to write?
A:Well, besides the Mia, Lucia, and Dominic, I think the most fun character was Vitto, Mia’s cousin.
Q: What was your biggest challenge in writing and publishing this story?
A:The editing. Cutting and dissecting every bit of my hard work was so difficult. However, I chose to pick my battles because I knew that, in the end, it was good advice. In the end, I knew it would make a better story, but it was still difficult.
Q: What is your next planned project? What can you tell us about it?
A:I have two works in progress right now. The first one is about an ex-soldier that returns from two tours in Afghanistan and has severe PTSD. He’s isolated himself and has many emotional issues to work through, but the thought of discussing his memories with a therapist over and over make him sick. The new civilian went back to his family home, a small ranch in New Mexico where he felt comfortable with his horses. His mother wants to help him and researches horse therapy. There is also romance involved. I’ll leave it there.
The second story is completely different than anything I’d ever written. It’s about a gangbanger from Los Angeles, who goes to jail for murder. There he meets a librarian that teaches him about Dante Alighieri and The Divine Comedy. Angel, the gangbanger, gets swept up in a redemption seeking fantasy of his own.
Q: And the most important question: chipmunks or squirrels?
A:Haa haa. Um, chipmunks.
Thank you for having me!

Summary: Mia Balducci misses her childhood days and yearns for the big, Italian family that she left behind in small town Massachusetts. At the tender age of sixteen, Mia moves with her bachelor father to Los Angeles, but no matter how many years pass, it never becomes home to her. The years spent living with her father aren’t easy, especially since she can’t stop thinking about what she once had. Her enrollment in the University of Southern California promises to bring exciting changes to her life, but Mia winds up with big problems instead. When she runs into an old friend from her old hometown of Winthrop, she gets swept up in nostalgia, and she soon loses herself in a quickly-progressing romance. When the fantasy falls apart, she is left to raise her precious little girl, Lucia, on her own. The demands of Mia’s work schedule and Lucia’s needs increase, and their lives become increasingly hectic. It is soon clear to Mia that she needs help. Luckily, her life-saving cousin saves the day and brings the mother and daughter a male nanny – their new “manny.”
After losing his high-pressure job on Wall Street, Dominic Roberts wants to follow his dreams to have a family. He’s already one fiancée down, and there are no likely prospects for another. In order to find the family he so desperately wants, he finds himself getting into the manny business. Since he is fully qualified to provide child care and is eager to leave New York City behind, his sister-in-law is able to land him a job in California working for his first client – the beautiful and intriguing Mia Balducci.
Will Lucia like the new man in her mother's life? Will Mia? And will this new trio discover the happily ever after they all so desperately seek?
Excerpt: I rolled over to face Dominic and he began to stir. I watched him breathe and took inventory of his precious face. His lashes were thick and short against his cheek. The stubble on his face had thickened a bit more and his lips stuck out in a pout. I pecked them and his eyes opened. “Good morning, sleeping beauty,” I said as he stretched and yawned. He scratched at his stubble and rubbed his eyes. He was adorable in the morning. “Mhmmm, it is a good morning,” he said with a sleep-coated voice. He wrapped and tightened his arms around me and then squeezed. “A very good morning.” “I need to get up and get ready for work. Lucia will be up in a bit. But ...” I began to say. “What’s wrong?” I exhaled a deep breath. “No, nothing’s wrong, but ... well I really want you to move into my room now. Too soon?” I wasn’t afraid he’d say no, but for some reason I felt strange asking him that. He scoffed. “Did you think I was going to sleep in my room after last night? I had the best night of my life” he said while peppering soft, slow kisses on my face. “It was my best night, too, baby.” I kissed him one more time and got up. “So, it’s official then. You’re moving in here and we’re a real couple.” I jerked my head in a nod to emphasize my statement. He rolled on top of me, pinning me down on the bed. “I thought it was a given, Mia. You’re stuck with me forever now. I hope you can handle me.” He laughed. “Mhmmm, I can handle you all right. I just hope you can handle me.” I kissed his lips.
a Rafflecopter giveaway Author Bio: Jennifer Garcia’s (aka Forbes Arnone) love of travel began when she went to the West Coast to visit her father at the age of three. Her home until she was sixteen was a small coastal town near Boston. She currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, two sons, and two dogs. She also runs a business, and is still caring for her family. Believing she can do it all, with the help of her family, she worked on her first novel during the late hours of the night while balancing the rest of her life during the day. On September 17th, Renaissance Romance Publishing will be releasing Tormented, the sequel to Lorenz Font's Hunted: The Gates Legacy.
