Observations at the Supermarket

An eminent snow storm is an event of epic proportions in Jordan. After all, it’s not something we’re used to, not even something that happens every year, despite the fact that this is the second year in a row. People are dashing out to stock on bread and groceries like there’s no tomorrow, which would be good if all that shopping kept them home for the next couple of days instead of blocking streets and causing traffic jams which, like the tragic events that took place last year, could cost o...

2014 Book Reviews – 2014

I love reviewing books, as opposed to rating them. It just doesn’t feel right to judge a book written by Chekov or Gibran with the same system used to judge hotels and restaurants. I mean, yes you can give a restaurant a 1-star rating because you found a hair in your soup which was served cold 20 minutes after ordering it, but with all due respect who are you to judge Gabriel Garcia Marquez? I’m serious, I remember coming across a review on Goodreads for a reader who gave “100 years of soli...

That thing Called fear

Mr. X left his house on what he thought was a fine Thursday morning. He had all the reasons to be optimistic in the world, after all he has finally landed a job interview for his dream job, a fortune 500 company whose work he’s admired and been passionate about for years. He had his best suit on, he even wore cufflinks, regardless of how pretentious he thought they were, but he thought this was the kind of occasion that called for useless, expensive accessories.

He could swear he heard the ele...

Why I can’t celebrate Malala’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Originally posted on middle east revised:

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this Friday to India’s Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai for their struggles against the suppression of children and for young people’s rights, including the right to education. That is great news, and it might almost mean Nobel Peace Prize makes sense again, after being awarded to Barack Obama in 2009“for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”,...

On October

It’s when yellow stops being just a color.

It’s when all your fears resurface, and then they are put gradually to sleep.

It’s that intonation of voice that tells you all you want to know.

It’s when you’re sitting with 10 people and you look around and think that you’d rather be with this one person instead.

It’s when you hear a notification ringtone and you pray to God it’s not someone else.

It’s when the thought of someone’s mere existence gives life a new shade of color you’ve never seen before....
