Merrie Land

Lately I’ve been listening to Merrie Land by The Good, the Bad & the Queen about a country that’s anything but. The album captures the quagmire of Brexit without ever mentioning the word. It portrays an ‘inward looking’ island at a time when the planet itself is crying out for our attention (‘two hundred plastic bags in a whale’s stomach’). It both engages – ‘I’m taking it personally,’ sings Damon Albarn – and withdraws. ‘Back to the seaside and the dream…’ The album’s distorted fairground music could have been the soundtrack to Banksy’s Dismaland in Weston-super-Mare a few years ago. Unusually for a supergroup, this group adds up to more than the sum of its parts. The visuals, too, are spot on. The cover shot of Michael Redgrave in Dead of Night, about a ventriloquist taken over by his dummy, nicely sums up everything.
