French and then English afterwards.

Legio Patria Nostra .

Seeing Monsieur Da silva in this video made me realise how I missed the opportunity of meeting not only a vetran of Dien Bien Phu but Herr Freitag , the WW2 Luftwaffe ace was in Puyloubier when we joined and had to dig a ditch for a drain along the vinyards. We went to the mess hall and ate those long, rolled spinach omlettes for lunch with them. From my background as a Para in the Soth African Army I thought he might have been a Portuguese guy who had fought in Angola or Mozambique. I did not speak French and he never spoke English. I sat near him and he spoke in French and seemed a nice guy. The German Luftwaffe Ace who after the war joined the Legion and served as a soldier sat at the table and seemed very dignified. Now as I think back I am honoured and humbled to have been in the presence of such noble men who served their army and then the Legion with such distinction. Legio Patria Nostra.
