Excerpt:
“Nadine, you really need to loosen up,” my best friend Lauren said as she jostled me for space in front of her grand, Hollywood-style makeup mirror hanging over her dressing table. “You act like you’re going off to your execution.” She hip-bumped me and I bumped her back as we carefully fixed our hair before Lauren’s big night out—her last one as a single woman.
“This place sounds like a dive,” I said as I sprayed flat my long, frizzy locks—or tried to, anyway. “Neptune’s Palace? I mean, really? Could the place sound any cornier?”
In the mirror, Lauren shrugged a thin, sculpted shoulder. “Hey, Patti found the place. She says it’s one of the hottest nightclubs in Miami.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of,” I sighed, looking at us side-by-side, Lauren all tall and leggy and blonde, with a perpetual Baywatch-style tan, and me…well, short and pale and way too curvy for my own good, with carroty hair, a snub nose and loads of freckles that made me look younger than my twenty-one years. Lauren’s mini was short and white and sparkly, whereas mine was more conservative, more like a purple sari that I hoped would hide, rather than hug, my curves. I had never been a big fan of my body, my wide hips and heavy breasts. “Wasn’t she the one behind that beer kegger we wound up at in high school with all those college boys? My mom just about killed me!”
“Your mom did not kill you!” Lauren grinned. “We blamed Patti, remember?”
“Oh yeah,” I said with a grin, though the memory made me sad. Those days of us being wild, giggly high school girls and letting Patti get us in trouble seemed so long ago. And my mom had died just over a year ago, I reminded myself. I would never get in trouble with her again. The idea made me want to snort back the tears in my nose.
I owed Lauren so much. She was there for me when my mom got sick, sat up with me all night long the night she died, and even helped me with the funeral arrangements. In fact, were it not for Lauren, and to a smaller extent, Patti, I would have been the lonely high school geek with her nose always in a book. Lauren and I even went to the prom as a couple when our respective boyfriends dumped us only days before the big dance, and we would up dancing together and giggling and drinking way too much in the parking lot—again, thanks to Patti. The whole school thought we were crazy.
Now here we were.
Lauren, my best friend, was getting married tomorrow and then taking a week-long Caribbean cruise with her new husband Miguel, a man so rich he’d bought them a massive, beach-front neo-Colonial home in Boca Raton, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Florida. I was Lauren’s Maid of Honor and I’d agreed to housesit for them while they were on their honeymoon. It had seemed like a good idea at the time, but now the thought just depressed the hell out of me, like window-shopping when you couldn’t buy.
One day soon, Lauren was coming home, and she was going to have this huge, palatial home, and a husband, and a life, and probably kids one day. I’d be back at the library where I’d been working since I graduated high school, eating cold pizza for breakfast, and looking forward to the next Neil Gaiman novel, the highlight of my week. I’d been voted the smartest girl in school, the one most likely to succeed, and yet I felt like the world’s biggest loser.
Outside the house, I could hear Patti pulling up the drive in her sexy, vintage Mustang, laying on the horn big time.
Lauren put her hand on my shoulder. “Let’s go out and make some big memories and big trouble tonight, Nadine!” she grinned. “It’s our last night!”
Our last night together, I thought. Our last night as two girls gone wild. I forced a smile and said, “Absolutely! Neptune’s Palace, here we come!”
We giggled together like we were teenagers again and then rushed for the door.

Excerpt:
“Hey, what’s new, pussycat?” I called as I came in the door of the penthouse apartment I shared with Leo. I tossed my keys down on the Queen Anne desk by the door and immediately went to the kitchen to get a drink of juice out of the fridge.
Most men my age would have gone to the wet bar that Leo and I kept for guests, but I made a point of not drinking alcohol or having it on my breath. Leo’s parents had been alcoholics, and I figured it was the least I could do.
I slid my briefcase along the kitchen counter, went to the Sub Zero, and got out some V8 juice. I checked my phone for messages. My secretary at the literary agency was always sending me “quick texts” about this client or that—which, essentially, meant I had to return to the office posthaste. Thankfully, I was text-free tonight, which was nice for a change. The week had been exhausting and I just wanted dinner and a movie, and to cuddle with Leo on the couch tonight. I drank down half a glass before calling out, “Leo, I’m home. What’s for dinner, hon?”
The stove was cold and none of the pots had been used. Leo was a part time chef down at Le Bistro Moderne on Second Avenue and I always let him cook dinner for us out of the fear that if I did anything more complex than open a can of soup, I’d likely kill us both.
“Leo?”
I went into the living room. Empty. Then, my pulse flitting a little faster, the bedroom.
He’d left the envelope on my bureau. He knew the first thing I did when I came home was change and put my clothes away in the closet and my watch away in the jewelry chest he had bought me. He knew I liked things orderly and in their place. He’d made enough Felix Unger jokes to last a lifetime.
I slipped my reading glasses on and opened the envelope with shaking fingers. I slid the folded sheet of crème stationary out. The first words that popped out were “It isn’t you, Henry, it’s me…”
I read the letter through three times. Then I put the stationary back in the color-coordinated envelope. I put my watch away in the jewelry case, my glasses away in my breast pocket, and hung my coat up properly in the closet I had been sharing with Leo McFarley for eight years.
I caught a glance of myself in the bureau mirror, middle-aged, dark-haired, features pleasant if not remarkable. I thought of the eight years I had spent with Leo, the best years of my life. There were rings under my eyes from work, and now a permanent look of rage in my eyes.
I went over to the shelves of glass and porcelain lions I had been buying Leo ever since we met. He always said they were cute and clever and that was very much like me. I picked up the first one I had ever bought him, a finely painted porcelain import from India, white with orange flowers, and smashed it against the bedroom wall above our bed.
Then I smashed all the rest, stomped the glass and porcelain into the carpet, and went out into the living room to the wet bar to get very, very drunk.

In the Hot Seat: Cindy Eller by Leigh Foxlee
Please welcome the talented and lovely Leigh Foxlee to the Courtesan Press Hot Seat!
Cindy Eller
Fifty Shades of Fairy Tales
Leigh Foxlee
About: Cindy Eller ditches her pre-Valentine’s Day date, the elusive Prince Charming, even though their scorching online encounters have her intrigued. But social anxiety, plus her paranoid step mom and step sisters, make her too terrified to meet the man of her dreams. The prince, however, has a plan to get her in his arms and dole out a sexy punishment for her naughtiness.
Excerpt: I ditched my pre-Valentine’s date. And it wasn’t the first time I dumped Prince Charming. I felt like a jerk.
You are a jerk! my inner voice scolded. I wouldn’t blame him if he never chats with you again.
“Oh shut up,” I grumbled back, pulling my glasses from my face to clean away smudges with my sweatshirt.
Prince Charming was the chat name of my online paramour. I went by Cindy Eller, after my favorite fairy tale. My real name is Cynthia Ellerton, and everyone calls me Cindy for short, so I suppose it lacks any imagination, or internet security really. Me and PC had met in a Funtime Games chat room while playing Goofee Gophers Word Search. He’d made a joke that he must be the one for me, since our screen names matched perfectly. The conversation flowed easily, amicably.
Then, about a month back, he’d suggested taking our games over to the adult chat section. I’m somewhat sheltered when it comes to sex, but curious, and I felt I knew him well enough to agree. Besides, it was just online sex, right? What harm could come of it?
My step sisters and step mother didn’t quite see it that way.
“What if he stalks you?” Sally clucked her tongue and shook her bright red hair. “You can’t be too careful these days.”
I rolled my eyes. “It’s not like I plan on meeting him ever. Besides, I’ve been chatting with him for months. What’s the big deal? Don’t be so uptight.”
My stepmother’s smooth brow crinkled with fine lines. “Sally does have a point. Those internet–oh, what are they called?–hackers?”
Rebecca, my other step sister, nodded at her mother.
“Hackers,” my step mother continued, “could get your phone number, address, all that stuff and come kill you!”
I tried not to roll my eyes at the thin, bird-like woman. I knew she meant well. She worried that my social anxiety made me spend too much time on the computer and not enough time face to face socializing. Plus she watched too many tabloid news programs and believed them to be true. My step mom saw me as the sheltered introvert she had to protect, and I could admittedly be a bit too cavalier with my internet security, despite my deep trust issues with people. What can I say? I’ve got a contradictory personality sometimes.
Still, my family didn’t need to worry. I was great with online game chat, but I was still dodging a face to face meeting with Prince Charming. Commitment and trust issues. Yeah, I’m a real package.
I remembered our first chat make out session. He broke my sexual ice with a simple question: Are you a virgin, Cindy?
I blushed profusely before I typed back: No, but I’m new to this.
PrinceCharming: We’ll start slow. Have you ever touched yourself?
My cheeks grew hotter and my fingers shook as I typed: Masturbated?
PrinceCharming: Yes.
I chewed my lip and stared at the chat window, hating how my face burnt with embarrassment. I was a grown woman, in college for crying in the sink, and this was ridiculous. Taking a deep breath, I told myself to Buck up, Princess.
I typed: Well… kinda … sorta.
Frustrated with myself, I hit enter and hid my face in my hands. How I wanted to punch a wall, but I didn’t want to lose my damage deposit, or break my fingers.
PrinceCharming: Kinda?
His response forced me to take deep, calming breaths. What a ninny I was! Okay, grow up Cindy and chat.
I typed: I’ve touched my clitoris. Never inserted fingers. No orgasm… yet.
What I didn’t tell him was my step mother taught me that sex of any kind was “dirty,” “wrong,” and only for procreation. Her words, not mine. But even though I disagreed with her, the woman raised me after my dad won custody and my mom, the natural wanderer, left. I had to live by her rules at one time, and those antiquated rules still played tricks on my less than perfect brain.
PrinceCharming: Will you play with yourself 4 me? Cum 4 me?
I swallowed hard, blinked at the screen.
I typed: I don’t have a cam.
It was all I could think of, and it was true. Not that I’m a toad or anything. I like to think I’m an average-to-cute geek girl. My short, black pixie ‘do makes me look almost elfin. But I’ve never been a fan of my chin, and my nose is just okay.
PrinceCharming: That’s okay. Type as you play. Tell me how it feels.

Red (50 Shades of Fairy Tales) by Madeline Apple
Hello, my lovelies! It’s been a while and it’s my hope that 2013 has been treating you well thus far!
We here at CP have a lovely, hot, dirt surprise for you, a brand new BDSM erotica series that we will be sharing with another publisher, Wild & Lawless Writers, called 50 Shades of Fairy Tales!
Each of the new books will explore an old fairy tale or folk story, but deliver it with a modern twist. Behold our contribution:
RED (50 SHADES OF FAIRY TALES)
Author: Madeline Apple
Sadie “Red” Redner is awakened in the middle of the night by word of her grandmother’s illness. She’s hesitant to accept a ride from her hard-nosed boss, Frank Lupo, but faced with no alternatives, she finds herself sharing a jeep with a real wolf who works hard and plays harder.
Excerpt:
Frank Lupo was the type of guy you fell in love with at first sight—and then quickly learned the error of your ways. I know because I was one of the stupid ones who did, the first day on the job, no less.
Frank was my boss and half owner of Lupo & Mayer, Accountants. He was tall and powerfully built, with the lean, broad physique of a guy who had probably done track in high school and football in college. He wore his perfectly black hair slicked back Mafioso-style and his goatee trimmed and tight. His eyes were icy blue and his teeth the porcelain white of a man with good genetics as opposed to a good dentist. He looked like the devil, if the devil was an accountant. He wore no wedding ring, though he did have a football ring from Rutgers University. Real movie-star material, I thought dreamily that first day I found myself working in one of the biggest accounting firms in New York City.
The competition for the job had been fierce, and I had only gotten in due to good timing. The last girl had been caught embezzling money and I had just put my resume in, thinking nothing would come of it. At twenty-four, I didn’t think I would actually get it. But suddenly there I was at Lupo & Mayer, crunching numbers. Naturally, that first week I was careful, checking and double checking my work. The last thing I needed was an error on the books. The following Monday, Frank called me into his executive suite office and told me to sit down.
I honestly thought he meant to compliment me, stupid me, but as he sat down and I concentrated on not gaping at him like some lovestruck teenager, he said, “You work too slow, Sadie.”
“I’m…sorry?” Maybe I hadn’t heard him right.
He scooped some papers out of the file folder that I had delivered to him before the weekend. “I appreciate you graduated top of your class, and you obviously have a knack for numbers, but, Redner, you finished two accounts last week. If I had shown these to my partner, he would have canned you before the weekend.” His voice was steady and boomed around his plush, white luxury office. He put off a kind of fission as he slapped the folder down in front of me like some kind of a displeased professor put off by a project of mine.
I felt my face burn with shame and anger—shame that I had let him down, anger at being called Redner, like he was my coach back in high school. His lips pursed together, hiding his big, strong teeth, and his eyes narrowed to laser points. I thought of some big predator stalking a deer deep in the wood and the thought made me hyperaware of my body, the way my hose rubbed between my legs. My fingers pressed nervously into my sweating palms.
He lifted his chin in a gesture I could only call arrogant. “If you want to run with the big dogs someday, Redner, you’re going to need to step it up.”
