Will Sit For Food
Just returned from visit with V’s mom, or for the sake of this dog blog, Daisy’s grandma. Hound wolfed down a slice of fresh-out-of the-oven, flakey-crusted cheese pie and a half dozen handmade breadsticks, plus the kibble and food scraps left out for stray cats. Oh well, it’s not everyday Daisy gets to see grandma so I let her indulge.
She’s back to her normal bottomless-pit level of consumption. Couple of days ago she was heaving up slimy hunks of grass, so I held off on the kibble and put her on rice and boiled chicken diet. Pure pumpkin and yogurt are other tummy-settling cures I’ve tried in the past. I realize it’s normal for pets to eat grass and puke. Someone told me that young spring grass tastes sweeter so that’s why dogs go nuts over it. Still, when I saw the amount she’d purged I was concerned. Not surprising. I’m a dotting pet parent. As market research will attest, those of us who fuss over the care and feeding of pets is a multiplying breed. Just walk into any Petco, PetSmart, or boutique pet mart and you’ll see what I mean. Or turn on the TV. Yesterday I saw a commercial for Bake a Bone, basically a bone-shaped mold into which you can pour your organic puree made from the bonus cookbook: https://www.bakeabone.com
This “as seen on TV” item is something I’d consider buying if it weren’t for the trillions of treats already available. Even for the most discerning pet parent there’s enough gluten free, non-China-made, organic yummies to choose from without one having to get all Betty Crocker. In terms of foodstuff my two- and four-legged companions are treated equally. Around this house both man and dog are well fed and cost about the same to run. However, if Daisy starts smoking and drinking we could be in serious financial trouble.
Heads up! For those of you who live in NKLA mark your calendar: Super Adoption coming up in May. http://bfla.bestfriends.org/events.html
It’s estimated that over 17,000 dogs were killed in Los Angeles animal shelters last year due to overcrowding. For animal lovers everywhere, even one is too many. So spread the word—adopt, spay, and neuter. After all, as always, it’s all about the dog!
