Get one...

I believe in readers' honesty, maybe because I am honest with my writing, and pour my heart into every line.

I am pleased with how readers have welcomed my novel, Daimones; it has received the coveted PRG Reviewer's Choice Award in Science Fiction in 2012 and has received the Awesome Indies Seal of Approval for good and enticing quality writing.

I don't have a budget for lots of advertising but I believe my story can touch the heart of many. Almost 10% of the readers has left a review on Amazon and Goodreads, and praised the story. Every day new readers find me.

I believe I can provide pleasant reading time to many but it is difficult to reach you. So, I had a crazy idea. Sometimes the craziest do work. I trust you, the reader, to be honest and willing to discover new authors. So this is my deal: discover my story, Daimones, get the ebook on Amazon, and tell me you are doing that with this deal: if you honestly did not like it, I will gift you an Amazon gift card for the same value, and you keep the ebook.

I'm confident you'll like it, that we will spend more time together, instead, with the second volume, "Once Humans" which will be published in June.

Blessed be.

About the Awesome Indies

The Awesome Indies ...what, why, who and how

I've recently received the coveted Awesome Indies Seal of Approval for my novel Daimones

The Seal now appears on the cover as such:
Daimones (Daimones Trilogy, #1) by Massimo Marino

But, what is the Awesome Indies?

The awesome Indies is a website (awesomeindies.net) that lists Independently published works of fiction that meet the same standards as books published by mainstream publishers - as evaluated by publishing industry professionals. AI explains:

We aim to showcase books that meet a specific, and clearly laid out, set of standards for fiction writing so that readers can browse for Indie books knowing they will be buying well-crafted works.
The blog publishes reviews written by reviewers for the site. Not every book listed has a review published on the AwesomeIndies.net because the reviews used for submission are often published on other sites instead.
Readers can browse the site and click on the book covers to read information about the books (most, but not all, lead to Amazon where readers reviews can be seen and the books can be purchased) or they go to the authors' page and click on the authors website link to find other retail outlets for the books.

- Who does the evaluations?

Publishing industry professionals is a term we use for those whose employment in a mainstream publishing house, past or present, as editors, publishers and writers indicate that they know what standard of writing is considered a publishable product for a traditional publishing house. Other people deemed to have this knowledge are those with degrees in writing, editing or literature, or reviewers with a background of writing study whose quality of reviews indicate such a knowledge. These reviewers may contribute their reviews to the blog or not.

All reviewers who contribute their reviews to the blog have read the book that our evaluations are based on ie 'Self Editing for Fiction Writers' by Renni Brown and David King and have had instructions on specific aspects of reviewing, including how to keep personal likes and dislikes out of the evaluation for the site. We also have a team of back up readers who give second opinions where required.

- What is evaluated?

The criteria are laid out on the home page and explained on the 'Explanation of the Criteria' page which includes links to further information on each point: http://awesomeindies.net/explanation-...

- How is the evaluation made?

Authors must submit a link to one comprehensive review rated at 4 or 5 stars by a qualified reviewer, as explained above. They must also submit a link to a bio that proves the reviewers qualifications, or proves that he or she is on our accepted reviewers list. Each link is checked out and if either of these links are not provided, or the review is not comprehensive enough the book will not be passed. Any reviewer that is not a contributor to the site is emailed and asked to check the book off against the criteria.

How many books sold, how many positive reader reviews and how many years or books a writer has been writing are irrelevant to our evaluation process. In order to be fair to all, books are evaluated on a book by book basis, not on an author's reputation. Books previously published by a mainstream publishing house, however, are accepted on that basis.

- Why have such a site?

• To provide readers with a place to browse for indie books that they can be sure are well-written.

• To showcase those Indie books that meet the same standards as mainstream books.

• To help remove the stigma against Indie books.

• To help authors raise the standards of their books.

- What does the site do for authors?

• It gives authors whose books are accepted the confidence that their work is of a professional standard.

• It gives those whose work is not accepted guidelines as to how they can improve. In some cases this can be very specific help, especially where a book just misses out for one reason, but is otherwise fine.

In case of a rejection, authors are encouraged to re-edit then resubmit. A resubmitted book will then be checked by a second reviewer. Many authors have accepted this challenge, have greatly improved the quality of their product and been added to the Awesome Indies list on resubmission.

Many reviewers (but not all) who contribute to the site will note copy errors when they find them and provide a list to the author. If the book is rejected due to too many typos (generally considered as being no more than 5 in a full length novel) the book will be accepted for the list once the errors have been fixed and checked.

- Who runs it?

Tahlia Newland set up the site, and is still the main administrator, but is assisted by Jen Blood, Katherine Logan and a team of reviewers and back up readers. Matters concerning the site, the criteria and the reviewing process are group decisions.

- Does any money change hands?

Not for inclusion on the list, that is made purely on quality. When readers buy via the link to Amazon, whoever set the link, either Tahlia or Jen, receives a small percentage of the payment, not nearly enough to be considered any kind of income for the time they spend administering the site. Donations are accepted and pay for advertising and site costs. Authors who donate or work for the site have their books displayed on the sidebars for a period of time.

-- Disclaimer --
The Awesome Indies site does not claim to be anything other than a site listing books that meet a certain criteria. Books not listed on the site are not necessarily inferior as the author may not have submitted their books to the site for whatever reason. We recognise that though we try to be objective in our evaluations we are by no means perfect, and authors who have their books rejected are welcome to provide a second opinion by a qualified reviewer. Should that occur we would find a third opinion and accept or reject the submission based on the majority viewpoint.

Awesome Indies... Where?

So... Going around the internet one finds gems and crap. We all know that. Same with books, and nowadays it does not really matter anymore if it is a self-published (indie) or a traditionally published work: you find typos, grammar issues, in both.

With the (r)evolution of the publishing business, most publishers don't have the means to provide the same stringent level of qualities unless you, the author, are able to bring in million of copies sold each year. The vast majority of all others are left practically with the same resources as an Indie writer.

So, how to sift through the slush pile? Well, there are groups of writers/reviewers/avid readers that do exactly that, sift for you to find the really good titles and the promising authors.

Last year I found the Paranormal Romance Guild group. It was mentioned to me as a "tough" group of reviewers who tell you in your face whether you need to write better (in all sense, continuity, plausibility, characters development, grammar, you name it). I was intimidated, they deliver quite a good number of 2 and 3 stars, some 4, and only a few 5 stars. What if, with all the care and effort I put in my writing, I was receiving a 3 star or worse?

The short story: fellow authors encouraged me, telling me that I did not have to worry. I submitted and trembled. Not only I got a 5-star, but my novel was among the finalists in Science Fiction for the 2012 PRG Reviewer's Choice Awards. It ended up winning the Award! www.paranormalromanceguild.com

But what about Awesome Indies. Well, there is indeed a group of reviewers, writers, enthused readers, publishers, editors who got united and established the criteria, and boy, those are quite some criteria, that will work as an Occam Razor to establish whether a book is a valid read, or not so. Mind though, you might not like the story of the books listed there, but sure thing they are well written!

Because of the effort that goes into my writing, with proofreading and multiple editing with paid service (I have a great editor in the person of fellow writer/editor Rebecca Stroud), I was happy I found this group of serious and dedicated writers.

Sure, the criteria are, once again, intimidating, but if you write with passion, sweat, and blood, and you care for your readers, those intimidating criteria are the things you aim to with your writing.
So, I submitted and I cannot tell you the feeling when I received a 5-star review too, as a confirmation of the good work and care.

My novel Daimones has now been added to the ‘Awesome Indies' listings on the Science Fiction page. It's also in the latest ‘New Additions’ blog post.
http://awesomeindies.net/science-fict...

The Awesome Indies listing lets readers know which Indie books are professionally written according to other professional writers and editors. Listing is free, it is not done to milk Indie writers. Placement on the site is made on industry evaluated quality only. This is what makes this site unique.

You may now ask yourself, great, what are these criteria. You have to go and read about it here: http://awesomeindies.net/explanation-...

It is much more than a simple listing of the various check points: Contents, Plot and Structure, Pacing, Conceptually Sound, Engaging, Characters, Wordiness or Overwriting, Point of View, Immediate and Engaging Writing, Grammar Spelling & Punctuation, Warning Signs that Something is Not Well Written.

Each of the above has its own section of criteria. Sounds a lot? Well, yes, it is a lot, and it is a fine sieve. Only the best will pass through, the gross and rough will be caught.

Books listed on the site are also eligible to apply for the Awesome Indies Seal of Approval. This seal is only given to books whose Awesome Indies Approved status has been agreed on by three qualified reviewers. Which means that you have to pass the sieve three times. Time consuming, you bet, and it also means that you might be listed, but you lack that plus to receive the Seal. Encouragement to do even better in the future.

Please let your social networks know about the site, write a blog post about it, like the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/#!/AwesomeIndies and invite your friends to do the same. Indie writers deserve to be recognized as quality writers!

The difficult role of a reviewer...

Sometimes you think reviewing a book must be very easy. You liked it? 5-stars, you didn't? 1-star. Everything in between is a "yes, but" in the higher or lower tail of the distribution. Some writers take a 3-star as if the reader had said "as if I haven't read it".

It needs much more than that. In this year, when I decided to make my writing public for the first time, I spent a great deal with critters.org people, reading all possible reviews in Amazon and goodreads, and other sites too. Bloggers and reviews from groups and guilds who do essentially that: read books and share their impressions.

The biggest mistake I've seen, and the most common, is from readers who have a very specific recipe in mind concerning the stories they want to read. It does not matter whether the book is well written, has grammar errors, is not edited, it doesn't flow.

For these readers/reviewers if the story follows the expected recipe it is a GREAT book. Of course, they deceive themselves and others. They don't want to read a story, they want to be told the SAME story over and over again. These readers can give you a 5-star or a 1-star for just one reason: you told them THEIR story or NOT.

Many of the reviews I read around fall into this broad category. The reviewer is motivating his given rank and you can tell immediately it is not a review, it is an opinionated statement: "I liked it a lot because I love green dragons falling in love with their masters and then....". "I hated it when he betrayed his wife and I had to put the book down. It teaches cheating is acceptable. One star, not recommended."

The wise readers—of course—will be able to read through the lines and get whether a 5-star shows a terrible book, or if a 1-star suggests this could be truly great, provoking, mind-twisting read.

The weird discovery is when I read of bad-star ratings and the reviewer on the contrary tells us that the read made him angry, or the story was too much to bear for his convictions, or that the characters were all doing things that made him ate them, and love instead the poor victim who was helpless. How could the writer let this happen? ONE-STAR!

Poor reader, he had in front of his nose a great book, a writer that has been able to stir deeply inside his emotions and he did not recognize it.

Before reviewing, a reader should expect to hear a different story every time, a believable one, one that makes her sad, mad, laugh, and sometimes even cry. That is the ideal, but if only one of this feeling happens, the story has not betrayed her, it has shaken up her firm beliefs and sometimes—oftentimes—we don't want anyone to wake-up us from our steady, immutable dream.

I've seen this happen to any book, even immortal classics receiving one-stars from the above readers. You'll never please them unless you write only one story every time, you can only change the names of the characters but beware, not the plot, nor the final: the rule is to never surprise :)

Reviewing is difficult, you have to have a mind and a heart ready for it, and minds and hearts do work like umbrellas: they function at their best when they are open!
