Maxx Fragg, Snippet #5 - Tears on my Poltergeist

Hi! Welcome back to another round of Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday! There’s a chill in the air and the rays of summer are all but forgotten but what better way to warm your thoughts than with a sturdy dose of Sci-Fi / Fantasy writing. This week, I’m still sharing snippets from the opening chapter of my latest novel, Maxx Fragg, V.P.I. Things are about to go down and Maxx’s terrified clients are having second thoughts. ______________________________________________________________Debbie raised her hand and asked, “Would it be okay if I just darted to the lady’s room first?”“It’s too late for that,” Maxx said.“But…” Debbie persisted.Maxx secured the detecting rod back in his bag and withdrew a long barreled shotgun with a plastic cylinder attached to each side. “You can put your hand down now.”Pumping the stock, a neon gel flowed through the tubing running the length of the barrel. Maxx hit a button and the liquid energized, bubbling as it flowed the course of the weapon. The couple simultaneously pulled their feet up off the floor.It was time for Maxx to set up the final act.“You wouldn’t want to miss the show, would you?” Maxx asked.  “They’re professionals, Debbie,” Travis said, trying to reassure her with a half-hearted smile.Debbie dug her nails into the couch. “I guess.”Maxx knew they needed to get through the rest of this job without any more problems. Debbie appeared on the verge of crying and Maxx knew Tane’s concentration shattered at the sight of a girl’s tears.
Let’s hope Tane can keep it together long enough to see some action. I promise some ghost thumping action in the coming snippets – just in time for the merry month of Halloween! Maxx Fragg Snippet #4 - Operation Oops

And…we’re back. After taking a week off to attend the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention last weekend, I’m here and ready for my weekly dose of science fiction and fantasy writing. I had a great time at the convention and Maxx Fragg, VPI got a lot of great exposure. I’ll be sharing again this week from Maxx Fragg’s opening chapter. I hope you enjoy. “You’re lucky you called us when you did,” Maxx said. “Have you ever seen anything like this, Tane?”Taking his cue, Maxx’s teammate finished unloading some equipment and crossed the room. His six foot eight inch frame exerted considerably more effort to move around the furniture as size fourteen  army boots left hefty impressions in the plush red carpet.“We need to evacuate the whole building,” he said, reading the device. Maxx elbowed him in the side and whispered, “Over doing it a little there, partner.”“I mean, yeah, those are somenumbers. Maybe we should call in our other group, you know, the Black Oops Guys?”“You mean our Black Ops Special Detention Squad?” Maxx turned his back to the couple, pulling Tane around with him. “I think we can handle this one on our own.” He gave his partner a quick jab in the ribs. “I can’t believe you.”“Ow,” Tane said, rubbing his side. “Quit hitting me, Maxx.” “You’re going to blow this whole thing,” Maxx said._______________________________________________

Maxx Fragg, V.P.I. - Paranormal Pottery 101

Welcome back to another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday – a place where authors from their respective fields share snippets of their published or current works. Make sure you stop over and check out all of the great contributions this week by clicking the main site Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday. This week I’m sharing another section from the opening of my new novel, Maxx Fragg, V.P.I. It’s been an exciting week as the book launched a week ago and has been getting some great media attention from Scoop to Nerdspan to American Mythology to some familiar faces like Dragons and Triplanes (Peter Vialls), T.K. Toppin, JC Cassels, and many others. Thank you to everyone who has supported the book from posts to retweets to mentions. I really do appreciate it. This is a great site and hosts not only some fantastic authors but people also! Okay….here’s my snippet. Enjoy.
____________________________________________________________________________________             Everyone had their own pre-conceived notions of how to get rid of a ghost. Maxx heard them all, séances, sprinkle salt along the door, burn sage, hire a bunch of meddling kids, craft some pottery together. He’d probably find it all funnier if he actually believed in any of it.
             Maxx pulled a long metal rod from his bag. Standing next to the couple, he pushed a switch on the base, holding it over his head. The staff hummed and vibrated like a radioactive tuning fork sending palpable energy out into the air around the room. Maxx swung it over their heads as they both instinctively ducked. They were like two kids watching their first fireworks display and Maxx was the guy lighting the wicks. He read the digital display on the club’s handle.              Satisfied, Maxx brushed his hand through his spiked hair, trying to express some fake concern. “You’ve definitely got a presence here. Readings are off the charts.”             Pulling a notepad from his tactical vest, he scribbled down some notes. Maxx drew a smiley face with a frown and tears streaming down both cheeks. Underneath his sketch he wrote Travis.

__________________________________________________________________“I think I’d rather see what’s coming,” Travis said as he pulled a cushion on his lap.“You expecting a pillow fight?” Maxx asked, dropping the equipment bag slung over his shoulder. Debbie jumped. “What are you going to do with that?”“What I’m being paid to do.” Maxx nodded across the room to his partner, who shook his head in disapproval. Bending next to the couch, Maxx slowly unzipped the bag. He was close enough to see the goose bumps on Debbie’s arm rise with each click.“I don’t care what it takes, just get that thing out of my house,” Travis said. “You’ll be ghost free in no time.” Maxx knew his clients needed to believe he could make it better, take away their fears. If only it was that simple. Everyone wanted to name the night, put a label on their personal horrors. He wished someone could shut the door to the monsters in his own closet.
Ahhhhh….the old monster in the closet syndrome. So is Maxx part hero – part conman – a bit of both? Check back next week for another exciting excerpt from the novel’s opening. Guess what time it is? Yes, it's the end of summer. Yes, it's also back to school time. Okay, it's NFL pre-season. I know, Labor Day is next weekend. But more importantly, it's a new Science Fiction and Fantasy Saturday! That special time of the week to kick back and enjoy some of your favorite authors and their writing snippets. Don't believe me? They had no idea what he had in store for them. He almost felt sorry. Almost. He watched as Travis stroked Debbie’s hand and whispered something in her ear. Maxx locked eyes with her as he moved across the apartment. He saw the desperation mixed with fear in her eyes and he grinned. He liked it that way. Pulling a pair of gloves from his belt, Maxx cinched them around his wrists. The rush of adrenaline rose up from his chest. This was far from his first job but he still got a thrill each time. He clicked off the lamp and the room went black.Debbie gasped. “Can’t we leave a few lights on?”           “I prefer to work in the dark,” Maxx said.

Last Zombie Standing #12

Saturday? It’s already Saturday? Where does a week go? The good news is that means it’s time for another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday. Summer is sadly winding down and so is my story – Last Zombie Standing. This will be my last snippet from the short.             “But why?” the general asked.          “It’s not working, sir. Maybe our friends from beyond are trying to tell us something, maybe we’ve already lost more than we can get back.”          “Don’t do it, son. We’ll find another way.”          “I think any way we go is a dead end, sir.”          An electrical surge shot through Zulu-2’s body, causing it to convulse.  The near-skeletal corpse slowly fell forward, its chest collapsing against the plunger, pushing both down against the base.          The energy rippling across the dome stopped. Tiny bursts of light erupted across the blue and green sphere in the distance. They expanded and convulsed into each other until a white circle glared against the backdrop of blackened space. Waves of light and debris spiraled away from the former planet as Zulu-2 watched from his belly along the moon’s surface. A faint wind gusted across the lunar landscape, gently blowing the flags of the nearby space modules. As the light dimmed, the world’s last necronaut crawled away, clawing the loose sod in clumsy handfuls, pulling its way up the next hill, searching for…something. 
 
Well…who saw that coming? Who was your favorite character – the General? The quiet but formidable Kingston? The ever-irrepressible Zulu-2? Let me know. Thanks for reading along. It’s that time of the week again. Kick back, grab a tasty beverage, and enjoy some sci-fi and fantasy writing from a great group of authors. Oh, yeah, I contributed too. Enjoy!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------          “Those dirty alien bastards were trying to kill us all,” the general snarled. “We’ll nuke them next, after we finish off these damn zombies.”          Zulu-2 caught the fading scent of the dead cat sprawled against the ground beside it. Hollow eye sockets searched in vain as it groped for one last meal. Its skeletal fingers wrapped around the bomb’s handle.           The camera on Zulu-2’s shoulder turned, focusing on the plunger.             “Sweet liberty, that was close,” the general said. “Sorry, soldier, but your mission is over.”           A small light activated at the base of Zulu-2’s skull, steadily blinking faster and faster until it glowed steady red. Time in the dome seemed to slow and then pause. Finally the general’s voice crackled from the necronaut’s suit mike.          “Why didn’t it explode? Zulu-2 should be nothing but zombie nuggets. I don’t under-”           “I blocked it,” Kingston said, his voice soft and eerily calm.
          And I find myself ending on another one-liner from everyone’s favorite lunar scientist, the silver-tongued Kingston. I mean, even our dead can’t rest in peace. Maybe that’s the message our alien benefactors are trying to tell us?”          “Don’t go all hippie on me, Kingston. We’re top dog for a reason.”          “And what reason is that, sir?”            “Because…we…dammit, I’ll do it myself then.”            A metal grappling hook extended from Zulu-2’s belt, the prongs searching the energized atmosphere.          The glowing sheath surrounding the box faded as the mechanized arm closed in.           “What the hell is that?” the general boomed.           “It looks like a bomb with a plunger on top,” Kingston said. “I told you it was a trap, sir.”

J. Alton Mast and The Daemon Theory of Everything

Today I welcome author and creator, J. Alton Mast, as she ramps up for the much awaited release of the second book in her Daemon Theory series. Fans and new readers alike will enjoy this post apocalyptic rideWelcome to my blog and I want to hear all about it: 
Who are you and what brings you by today?I’m J. Mast! I am a 23 year old author, graphic designer, and comic artist. And I’m here for this interview.What drives you to write the kinds of books that you do?Writing to me is cathartic, so (and I know this sounds lame) the type of genres I write tend to be a reflection of how I’m feeling. I tend to write things that are darker (I tend to stick within Horror or Black Comedy) because that’s how I deal with things. Some people have a punching bag or a stress-buddy. I write about demons. To each their own, right?How would you describe your writing style?Odd and cryptic! I’ve been told that my style is hard to read and that it makes people think.What are your influences?  Favorite books?I love reading about religion, philosophy, and human nature. I find those topics endlessly fascinating. I read a lot of the classics, and they tend to be fairly heavy on those topics. Some of my favorites among them are Candide and Vanity Fair.What songs would be included in the soundtrack of your life?I am a HUGE EDM and Dubstep fan. I love loud, thumping music that makes me want to drive my car irresponsibly fast. So, even though my own life is fairly mundane, the soundtrack to it would be pretty intense!Could you share the best advice you’ve received as an author?  What advice would you share?Compromise is your friend, but at the end of the day, never sacrifice the integrity of your work just to please someone. Write something that you would want to read. That advice still rings true to me, and I would definitely pass it down to anyone looking to break into the industry.Can you talk a little about your writing process?There’s a lot of procrastination involved. If I’m feeling blocked or just at a loss for words, I tend to play video games, or take several walks, or just do something completely unrelated to writing. I tend to get inspiration from seemingly innocuous things. However, when I’m in the swing of things, I tend to keep my coffee maker on for 24 hours straight and blast through my writing until I’ve either burned myself out for the day, or get hit in the face with writer’s block.Tell us about your latest release!It’s called Daemon Theory: Brotherhood and it’s the second in the series. It’s a post-apocalyptic horror/sci-fi that takes place on our Earth, more than one thousand years in the future and
chronicles the world post-rapture. There’s a significant amount of action and I think it’s a great read if you’re into dark (and more nihilistic) fiction.Talk about one specific theme in your latest book.A major theme of the series as a whole is the concept of freedom, what it means to be free, and at what price freedom does or does not come with. At the end of the book, many of the characters realize that true freedom can never be attained and that they will always be tethered to something (be it tangible or intangible) that prevents them from reaching true freedom.Can you share a passage?              Sure! This is one of my favorites that I’ve written in this series.            Without thinking, she began to swim forward. The water was deafening, as the only thing that could be heard was her arms slicing through the grey and the occasional rattle of chains.            “What is it looking for?”the voice asked, with utmost sincerity, “What does it need.”            Shut up…Alecko thought.            “We hear you,”it laughed, “We hear everything, little fish. Nothing is sacred here. Not thoughts. Not dreams.”            Where are you? she asked it, Why don’t you show yourself?            “I’m here! I’m here! I am here! Oh silly fish. Stupid fish. Swimming about in circles, looking for something that can already been seen. Is that the nature of your kind? What can change that? Or are you doomed? I would very much like that. We can stay down here forever.”            You’re lying, she thought, You’re not here…you’re probably not even real.            “You’ve had the dream before, haven’t you? The one of the goat-headed woman with seven arms? She lingers and waits outside of your house. She’s watching you. Waiting for the golden-god, the false god, to come and fill your sweet, feeble head with lies.”            At that moment, she heard a massive rumble from beneath. A strong current pulled her down several feet, then flung her back up, closer to the surface. An impressive, blackened body slithered in the ocean beneath her, like hundreds of coiling snakes ever-entangled into one entity. Unable to process the creature’s immeasurable size, she hadn’t taken the time to notice the great, red eye that had opened just beside her. Horrible, asymmetric and ugly, it stared down at the daemon before it.            A tendril thrashed from the chasm below, and wrapped itself around her body, crushing her in its grip. She scratched at the leathery appendage, though it did no good. It whipped her around, forcing her to look the great beast in the eye.            Her pupils shrank and her body seized up, gazing into the black, amorphous mass hidden behind the turbid water. The hideous arm loosened and let Alecko drift up towards the beast’s face. She could see a set of horrible, yellowed teeth the size of pillars. A putrid stink soon followed as its massive jowls spread.            “Do not move,”it hummed, rattling the chains nearby.            This voice was much different that the one before. It was almost soothing.            “Do not speak, and do not think. I have much to say to you, born again child.”            What are you? she thought, her heart pounding.            “I am the prophet…”it replied, “I am the silent watcher within these waters. I speak for the unheard, and I dream for the unsleeping.”            What would you ask of me? she questioned, unable to physically speak.            “I ask only that you listen,”it retorted, “Alecko Hagai of the Draics…once Alecko vi Fenris…once Vanessa Hilyard. Daughter of Hunter and Jennifer. You left a once beautiful life behind to eradicate the lives of others. What say you to that? What is your defense for your crimes?”            I…I have none, she pondered, I have nothing to say. What I did was a mistake.            “A sorry is just a sorry, except when it’s not…then it becomes something else entirely! Empty words. It’s all empty words. I don’t understand them. Ah! But action, wouldn’t that be a thing? What will you do, little fish? You ask for redemption. Sometimes, I hear you calling out to me in your deepest sleep. You are afraid. You are alone. You are scared that you will remain alone in the end. Lie to others and you are merely deceptive, lie to yourself and it becomes reality.”            I’m not afraid to die…And that’s not why I’ve come here. I’ve welcomed death.            “I know, I know silly fish! Does this tragedy amend for another? Or are you just pretending?”            You ask a lot of questions-            “And you assume you know all of the answers.”            I never said that I did. Apparently you know better than I. Tell me…            “You were born into a den of eels and prostitutes! The spirits of your ancestors cling to what little remains of your sad soul. They scream, they claw and they cry out. Your mistakes burn at their essence. You allowed the golden-god to crawl inside of you and what does that say?  Oh how they scream. I can barely hear you over their songs. Apparently, they are numerous. Would you let them down?”            I helped set the First Impact in motion! I know I have…But I can put a stop the Third. I’ve managed without the likes of you so far. So…go back to your swimming! I don’t need you.            “I expected better of you. It’s a pity that I can’t just do away with you, but then again I’ve been down here for so long and I’ve lost my taste for mad women. In the city of flesh and sins live only mad things. It’s so tiresome. Somehow I was hoping you’d be different, that’s all.”            You’re awfully civil for…            “For a monster? Your judgement is not a supplement for sentiment. You are a frog, aren’t you? Not descent enough to be one of us and too cowardly to be a snake. How odious, we should think of you.”            You speak in riddles, prophet. But I have no time for games.            “On that we can agree. Tick tock. Your time is running short. The golden-god must be stopped. Tear him down, and cast him in bronze. Is degradation the key? No. Bring him! Bring him to me. Oh sweetest Vanessa! Oh youthful Vanessa! We know what to do with him here. But only I can make sure that he suffers.”            Would you do to him what you do them?            “My sinners? No, no. His crimes vastly outweigh the likes of them. His crimes are innumerable. His punishment will never justify what he has done…”            Then why punish him? Grant me the power to destroy him, and I will.            “I cannot. Punishment is the nature of things. An eye for an eye? I’ve always liked that one. But there are those who believed that punishment for crimes of the most lurid kind can be paid in time. What is time to beings who are endless. Does time accrue from the souls consumed? The lives lost? Or even worse, the lives never lived? His endless hunger did not just affect those who were on the cusp death. You know this and you will never be satisfied. Do you think that his transgressions against you deserve all that the full force of hell can bestow upon him? Yours seems to be a petty complaint in the scope of things.”            Again, you do nothing to help.            “What would you ask of me? After all, you are so close.”            Then why have you called for me!?            “Let me show you, little fish.”            The sea prophet opened its gaping, cavernous mouth and inhaled. Alecko froze as the water pulled her in towards the horrid rows of teeth. The realization swept over Alecko and she began to swim away from the opening. She tried to scream, though she could no longer fight against the current.            Like a thunderous tidal wave, Alecko’s body went crashing down against the floor of the monstrous mouth. She was able to catch her breath enough to expel the foul water from her lungs. Though the stink of death and rot filled the damp orifice and she began to gag uncontrollably. Water then flowed into the mouth, crashing into her body as though flood gates had been opened.            “No…NO!”Alecko screamed, clinging to the back of the throat, the water pushing her back down the putrid pipe of the prophet, “NO!”            Her vision then began to go black as she stared down into the endless blackness of the beasts insides. She felt her entire body go numb, as though her spirt had decided to leave.  Tell us about your book’s cover!I made it! No, seriously. I did the cover artwork myself! Personally, I like white covers. I think they look clean and eye-catching, and that’s definitely the aesthetic that I tend to stick to when doing my own covers haha!What else can you do besides write?Well I do all my own artwork for Daemon Theory, so there’s that! I’m also working on a graphic novel (currently being serialized on its own website, by the way) called Newchord Panic, so I can make comics as well. I’m also a cosplayer and go to conventions regularly. I mostly work with fabric construction, prop painting and makeup. My better half does prop construction. We make a good team!After the last page, what do you want the reader to leave with?I want them to want to read the next book, haha! But seriously, at the end of the day if I made the reader think, if they were entertained, and enjoyed the story at the end of it all, that’s all that matters to me.What’s next?As I said before, I’m working on a graphic novel. As far as writing goes, I’m working on a book unrelated to Daemon Theory. So far, all I can say is that it’s a dark comedy for an older audience, involving Succubi and Incubi. I plan on writing the next installment for Daemon Theory (obviously!) but I definitely need a break from the story and the characters for a bit.Where do you see the publishing industry heading in the next five years?I think books will never be out of style. I think that for all the scares involving ‘Books going under’ and ‘eReaders will replace printed word!’ is just that, all scares. As long as there are people who can think, then there will be people who read!
