Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday - 03/29/13

Welcome to another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday!  I’m hoping everyone has enjoyed the snippets I’ve provided to one of my current WIP’s, Myth-In-Law, so far.  This week, we’re staying with Sam’s Grandfather as he makes his way back after remembering Sam’s pending birthday and the mysterious importance behind it.  If you have a chance, please check out the other snippets I’ve posted here for Myth-In-Law and make sure you head on over to SciFiFanSat.blogspot.com and read ALL the fantastic writing submitted by a group of terrific authors over there.  They’re worth the read!  Here’s hoping for a great weekend to all and a little added entertainment as you cruise the author blogs.  Comments are always welcome and followers appreciated!
Professor Livingwood checked the RV’s speedometer, which was pegged at eighty-five.  He’d promised Sam’s father to watch out for the boy and when the time came to be there to help with the transition.  Another broken promise on a growing list to atone for.            A horn snapped the professor’s attention back to the road.  The wheels of the RV had crossed the double yellow line and he focused on the pink stuffed animal fastened to the grill of the eighteen wheeler bearing down on him.  Overcompensating to avoid the collision, the RV swerved right and strayed off the road.            “Stupid old fool.”          Bringing the camper to a stop alongside the highway, the professor saw the red glare of the eighteen wheeler’s brake lights in his side mirror and heard the metal behemoth’s wheels chirping as it skidded to a stop a couple hundred feet behind him.          “I just chased down a dead witch in the New Orleans’s bayou but almost became road chowder because of careless driving.  I need to focus, for Sam.”

SciFiFanSat Post - Myth-In-Law

Hi!  Welcome to another snippet contribution for Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday!  I’ve been having a great time posting from one of my current WIP’s, Myth-In-Law.  I figured I’d give Sam the week off and check in on his grandpa – Professor Livingston.  The last time we saw him, he was hunting a cauchemar (dead witch) in the bayous of Louisiana before remembering Sam’s pending birthday.  I hope you enjoy this week’s installment and if you’re so inclined please take a look back at some of the past snippets from Myth-In-Law.  Make sure you check out all the talented authors and other great writing going on over at scififansat.blogspot.com.  As always, comments are greatly appreciated and truly do help keep the creative fires burning.  Enjoy!
TJ’s Truck Stop – 15 miles south of Tuscaloosa Alabama          “Where in the blazes is that boy?”  Professor Livingwood slammed the handset against the side of the payphone.            The soft thump of the gas pump releasing from its locking mechanism caught his attention and he removed the nozzle from his RV’s gas tank and replaced the handle.  Wiping a dirt laden hand over his bloodshot eyes, the Professor entered the convenience mart and eyed the thinly built cashier behind the counter.  The boy, no more than eighteen, wore a faded flannel shirt and a flat brimmed ball cap pulled low on his eyes.          The professor pulled a couple bottles of water from a cooler near the counter and relished in the cold breeze before sliding a handful of twenties across the counter.          “Any idea how far it is until the next gas station with a working phone?”          The young cashier looked up and said, “Ever hear of something called a cell phone?”          “I found they don’t mix well with swamp water.”

Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday - Myth-In-Law

It’s another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday!  Here’s hoping your weekend is full of reading (and writing) goodness.  My contribution for this week is staying with one of my WIP’s, Myth-In-Law.  If you haven’t had a chance, please take a look at the earlier entries from this same work.  In this snippet, Sam finally figured out the secret to opening the mysterious book given to him by an equally mysterious stranger but before the big reveal happens, he gets another surprise visitor.  Hope you enjoy.  Please make sure you go over to SciFiFanSat.blogspot.com and check out all the fabulous writers and their awesomnastic (that’s a word right?) writing snippets.  As always, along the way, if you could spare a few comments for myself and the other paupers of print, they go a long way!  Thanks!
“I can’t believe you’re doing homework on your birthday.  Why don’t you take a break and come down to the kitchen with me?”          Sam’s mom peeked around the corner into the library as he slid the book back into the school bag at his feet.           “I’m just doing a little research for a project.  What’s downstairs?”          “I’ve got a surprise for you.”          Sam kicked the bag farther under the desk and mumbled, “As long as it’s not a talking dirt devil.”          His mom was halfway down the hall.  “By the way, would you know anything about the giant hole in my kitchen ceiling?”          “No idea.”

Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday

Welcome to another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday and a fresh writing snippet from one of my WIP’s – Myth-In-Law.  The secrets of Sam’s mystery book are at his fingertips and all to be revealed.  Maybe.  I hope you enjoy this week’s contribution and if you haven’t, please check back at some of the earlier snippets.  Make sure you check out all the great writing over at SciFiFanSat.blogspot.com . There’s a bunch of fantastic writers over there that provide some entertaining weekend reading.  Leave a few comments along the way, they’re always appreciated!
Opening the center desk drawer, Sam bent the end of a paperclip into a hook and fished around inside the book’s binding until he felt resistance.  Gently tugging at paused intervals, he pulled out a gold ring emblazoned with an intricately detailed crucifix.          Noticing the inscription inside the ring, Same held his flashlight closer and read, “ Ex umbra in Solem.  Looks like we have a winner.”           Sam aligned the ring’s cross with the clasp and the book vibrated against the desk top.   The computer screen next to him flickered with images of bizarre creatures and pages from unknown texts.  A gust of wind slammed a tree limb against the library window, startling him out of the chair.          “Come on, just open the thing.”          Inching his hand closer to the clasp, he felt the key touch the lock and he held his breath as he turned.          “Sam, I’m home!”

Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday

Welcome to another writing snippet contribution for Science Fiction Saturday Saturday.  I hope everyone’s been enjoying Sam’s adventures from my WIP – Myth-In-Lawand have followed along as Sam tries to get this mysterious book of his open.  I hope you enjoy this week’s snippet enough to leave a comment or two along the way.  They really help to gauge how well the story is moving along.  Please take some time to check out ALL the great writing happening over at the main site – scififansat.blogspot.com.  A lot of talented writers contribute every week and provide some great weekend reading.

Jumping from his chair, Sam dashed between two of the shelves that comprised the Livingwood family library.  Books held a special place in Sam’s heart.  Every week for nearly five years after Sam’s dad disappeared, he and his grandfather travelled to flea markets and garage sales, scouring boxes and car trunks for rare volumes.   He brushed his hand down a row of books, picking one from the stacks; The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.             Sam’s dad credited Washington Irving, who wrote under the pseudonym of Crayon, with helping to bring American literature to the masses.  He opened the collection of short stories to the well-worn thumb marked beginning to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.  Sam remembered sitting with his dad in that same room, reading passages by firelight on snowed in winter nights but those memories became harder to recall.  Flipping through the book, he scoured the pages for hand written note in the margins, anything that may hold a hidden meaning.          Disgusted, Sam slammed the book shut before noticing a tear in the binding and a glint of metal inside.          “No way.”

          Welcome to anothe...

Welcome to another Sci-Fi Fantasy Saturday!  I’ve been staying with snippets from my current WIP, which I’ve tentatively titled Myth-In-Law and we’ve followed Sam and his grandfather for the past several weeks building up to Sam receiving a strange package from a mysterious stranger.  I hope, if you have time and haven’t already, you’ll take a couple minutes to catch up on the other snippets I’ve submitted here and leave a few comments along the way.  Enjoy.  Please be sure to check out all the other fantastic snippets by the other great writers over at SciFiFanSat.blogspot.com.  It makes for some great weekend reading!  ‘Nuff said.
Pulling out the note from his father, Sam read through it again.           “The key is in my head…all in my head.”          Sam closed his eyes, concentrating on the book, and waved his hand over the cover.          “Open sesame.  I command thee unlock.  These are not the droids you’re looking for.”          Nothing.          “Great, I’m turning into Grandpa.”          Sam sighed and tapped his fingers against the wood, knowing he missed something.          “That’s it!”

A great place to share great writing!     ...

A great place to share great writing!
Welcome to another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday!!  I’ve been having a great time with the submissions from my current WIP and I truly appreciate everyone that’s been reading along and leaving comments.  The story to date has found Sam’s slightly eccentric grandfather tracking a dead witch in the bayous of New Orleans, Sam running into a living twister in the woods on his way home from school, and leaving him a note from his thought dead father.   I hope you’re enjoying my work.  Make sure you take some time to check out all of the great writing snippets over at scififansat.blogspot.com and if you can spare a couple comments – they go a long way.  Have a great weekend!
“This’ll do the trick.”          Sam pulled the steak knife from a wooden block on the counter and cut into the strands of cord binding the package, ripping away the thick brown paper covering.  He stopped and stared at the book resting in the middle of his kitchen table.  A carved wooden cover and backing were bound together with a coarse black membrane on one end and a riveted brass clasp on the other.  Sam noticed the keyhole in the clasp and read the inscription on front.          “Ex umbra in solem.”          Grabbing a small screwdriver, he inserted the end into the key slot, gently feeling around.  He felt some kind of pressure pushing back the more he jiggled around inside until the screwdriver shot out and embedded in the ceiling.          “Great, how do I get to explain that one to Mom?”

Make sure you check out all the other great writers over ...

Make sure you check out all the other great writers over at SciFiFanSat.blogspot.com !!!

Welcome to another SciFi Fantasy Saturday and my latest snippet contribution from a current WIP of mine.  For the last few weeks, we’ve followed Sam and Mary on a bike ride home and a few mysterious revelations about ghosts, an ominous bike ride over a covered bridge, and last week Sam met up with a human twister sent to him by his thought to be dead father.  Here we’re picking up from last week and the mysterious stranger has left something for Sam before vanishing.  Sam has just finished reading the note from his Dad.  I hope you enjoy this week’s snippet and, as always, if you feel compelled, comments are appreciated.  Please make sure you check out the other writers and their work over at Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday.  There’s a lot of talent there and definitely worth your time.  Enjoy.
Sam wiped the dirt stained tears from his cheeks and stared at the bottom of the note.  Loveand Dad were two words he never expected to hear again.  He carefully re-folded the page and slid it between the pages of his science book.  Sam tugged at the strings bound tightly around the package the note was attached to.  He instinctively felt for his trusted folding knife in the front pocket of his jeans before remembering he just left school.  The blade was the last thing his father gave him before he vanished and Sam wasn’t about to chance it winding up inside a desk drawer in Mr. Skinner’s office.  Stuffing the package the best he could inside his book bag, Sam figured it would hold until he made it home and could get it un-wrapped.          He brushed the dust from his clothes and started pushing his bike down the trail, casting a last look at the bridge as he rounded the bend.          “I haven’t seen my dad in ten years and he sends a human twister to give me a diary.  I might as well add crazy to my growing list of problems.”

          Thanks ...

Thanks for stopping over for another Science Fiction Fantasy Saturday.  It’s cold outside here and the perfect time to catch up on some reading or churn out some writing pages.  I hope you enjoy this week’s snippet.  This one again comes from one of my current works in progress that deals with a young boy, Sam, and his unique family history that he’s only now beginning to learn about.  The snippet picks up after Sam’s harrowed bridge crossing and crash and the mysterious voice at the end of the tunnel, literally.  I appreciate everyone who takes the time to stop and read and if you could leave a comment or two, all the better.  Please make sure you check out all the great snippets over at the main site.  They’re a talented group of writers who make the weekend a little more enjoyable by sharing their work.
“Who said that?”           Sam spun around and saw a small earthen tornado swirling behind him with the faint outline of a man trapped inside.          A dirt covered arm protruded from the vortex.  “I got somethin’ for you.”          Sam heaved a rock at the mass, aiming for what he figured was the head, and shouted,   “Leave me alone!”          The stone ricocheted inside the roiling dust storm and erupted back out, embedding into the ground between Sam’s legs.          “Glad to see ya got some fight in you.”          Sam pushed his legs along the ground to gain some distance and swore he could make out a cowboy hat on the figure’s head.          “Who are you?”          “Your dad sent me, dingus.”
