Only 9 days to go until Election Day! I’ll be in Monroe County, PA on Nov. 3 working as a poll greeter for thirty-year Army veteran @claudette4pa176. Can you help on election day? Register as a poll greeter, drive people to the polls, hand out water to people waiting hours to vote. It is going to take a village to save democracy. And if I can stare down the barrel of decades of bad karma for always going full New Yorker on any stranger ever trying to hand me anything—surely you can get out there, too. And if you DO see me out there on Election Day: Please, be gentle.

Also, I’ll be at the polls in Brooklyn at 6:00 am tomorrow to vote early. Do you have your voting plan?

I often get asked: what’s the “best” way to write a book? Of course, there is no “best” way there is only “your” way. And most of the time you don’t choose it; it chooses you.

Mine is this. For better and for worse. These pages—marked up this much—are the seventh time I’ve done this to my new book. So far. There will likely be at least a few times more. That’s after a first draft and lots of changes made on the computer. And this is AFTER submitting a draft and getting great notes from my brilliant editor @barth.jennifer.

You cannot write a book without feedback and you cannot fix it all at once. It’s a process. A long one. People also ask me all the time how you know when you’re done. You’re done when the pages aren’t covered in ink. Or when Jennifer says you are.

So find your process, and hold fast. I promise, it’s the way. The only way.

Oh, one universal truth? These are the best pens. Don’t fight me on that. Trust me, I will win.
