Children in Horror Stories

There was a discussion on GoodReads the other day that got me thinking about the role children play in horror stories. Many people were quick to condemn the portrayal of children in horror. I understand the urge to do so. I have children and the thought of some terrible monster (or person) doing something to them rattles me. Which is exactly why I don’t think like that.

I think taking up this discussion leads to something else. The idea that people feel they need to relate in some way to the characters in a story. I would tend to disagree. I mean, how much did you relate to Forrest Gump or Benjamin Button? I can understand them and I feel for them but I can’t say that I relate to them anymore than I would to anyone else. It has nothing to do with who they are, but what they go through.

At any rate, you can’t create a world without children in it (not a believable world anyway!) And that means that children are necessarily a part of any good story. What is more important is to look at how and why the children are present. There are certainly enough authors out there willing to write horrifically cruel things involving children just to be shocking. Now, which is the worse sin: a world without children or a world where children are used for shock value?
