Purpose Pre-release Give Away(s)

Purpose_FBbanner_DSP

I don’t think I can honestly say I’ve been quiet about the release of Purpose. I mean, I’ve been on three blogs, had them reposted on Facebook and tweeted them. I even remembered folks  a couple times when one was ending and a new one began.  To be honest, with all the ‘views’ I’ve gotten, I expected more people would sign up for something free. And it’s not just an eBook. I’m trying to give away a $15.00 gift certificate to Dreamspinner Press. That way if you already bought the book or if you don’t want the book, you can just take the money and buy whatever you like in Dreamspinner’s store. And you can enter multiple times. Each blog stop – and two are still open a third is coming soon – is giving a way an eBook, plus each time you comment on a blog hope your email is entered to win the gift card. You can get up to four chances to win that way. Here are links to those contests that are still open if you want to go sign up:

Anne Barwell – ends June 15

M.A. Church – ends June 16

Elizabeth Noble – Starts June 20 ends June 24.

But maybe I didn’t make it easy enough?  Each blog stop does require you answer a question.  So I’ll make this easier – well hopefully it’s easier.

I’m going to give away another eBook copy on my site on June 21, 2013 – the day Purpose is released.  To enter, starting today and running thought midnight on the 20th,  just 1) comment on this post- no email required, or send out a tweet with a link back to this page; or leave a comment on the Facebook post for this giveaway.  All who enter will also be entered to win the $15.00 Dreamspinner Press Gift Credit.  I think that makes it a bit easier to enter.

Last – my dear friend Lily Velden is having a special pre-release giveaway for me as well.  Anyone who comments on her interview of me that begins June 18 and ends June 20 will be entered to win a $10.00 Dreamspinner Press Gift Credit. This giveaway is just for those who comment on Lily’s site so make sure you stop by and say hello. Here’s a link to her site.

Guest Author: M.A. Church & Her New Release: Pure

Please welcome back to blog M.A. Church.  Today she’s here to share an excerpt from her new book, Pure.

Blurb:

Pure 200x300Zygi Wyatt is an intimidating dom, but he yearns for love just like the next man. However, finding a partner who isn’t scared of his size is no easy task. The easygoing Mo seems like the answer to his prayers.

Love is the stuff of dreams. Ask the god Morpheus—he knows all about it. Mo wants Zygi in a forever kind of way, but he has to be sure of Zygi’s love before he claims him for his mate and reveals his true self.

Unfortunately, Zeus is growing increasingly unhappy with Morpheus, and Ares is determined to throw a monkey wrench into everything. Zygi and Mo will have to brave the wrath of the gods to make their dreams come true.

Excerpt:

ZYGI led Mo into the club and found an open cabana. He sat down and motioned for a waitress. “Been waiting long?”

“I just arrived. Since you weren’t here yet, I waited for you.” Mo bit his lip. “Hope that was okay.”

“Glad you waited. I had a few things to do. Is this cabana good? Or would you prefer to move to Jeff’s? It’s fancier.” The waitress arrived and Zygi held up his hand for her to wait. “What do you want to do?”

Mo’s wide eyes looked around their cabana. “Nicer than this?”

Zygi snorted. “Yeah. He’s the owner, remember?”

“I like this one. Can we stay here?”

“Absolutely. Now, what do you want to drink?” Zygi shrugged. “We’re on my dime, so don’t be afraid to order top shelf if you want.”

Mo shifted in his seat. What in the name of the gods did that mean? He couldn’t see the main bar from here, so how would he know what was on the top shelf? What Zygi said had to mean something other than what he thought. He really wished Cam was with them so he could translate.

Zygi saw the confusion on Mo’s face. There—there was that language barrier that kept popping up. Could he really not know what it meant? “Um, what I mean is if you want a drink, you can order the expensive brands.”

Mo’s eyes lit up. “Can I have a Cherry Coke? Cam got me one at that fast-food place where the girls skated out to your car.”

Zygi stared at Mo, then looked at the equally shocked waitress. “Penny, bring me a Bud and a large Cherry Coke for him—a virgin Cherry Coke, please. Close the door when you leave too.”

“Got it.” She flashed a smiled at Mo before hurrying off.

“So, been meaning to ask you. How did you know what was going down, ah, I mean, what happened between Cam and Jeff?”

Mo lowered his eyes to the table. “Cam told me Brad had been kicked out by his long-time boyfriend, Aaron. He’d shown up on Jeff’s doorstep with some half-baked idea of using Jeff for free room and board until Aaron took him back.”

“Little bastard. Bet Cam didn’t know Brad is an award-winning actor, huh?”

“He found out later, after he and Jeff made up. Jeff said Brad set the stage in an effort to get rid of Cam. It didn’t work, of course, but the resulting argument between Jeff and Cam in the parking lot was something to see, Zygi.”

Zygi frowned—that was his problem. As he’d sat there watching the film, it was like he was seeing it for the first time. He had no real memory of the fight. Jeff and Cam acted like everything was fine and had retired to Jeff’s penthouse to make up.

Mo chewed his bottom lip as he watched Zygi. This was what he had dreaded. He couldn’t very well tell Zygi the truth, now could he? That Cam, Jeff’s boyfriend—who was really Jeff’s mate—was the legendary Cupid. And that Cupid had a dark side, known as Jealousy, who had made an appearance thanks to Brad showing up. Oh yes, he could just imagine telling Zygi how the god of all gods, Zeus, would have Cupid’s wings if it became public knowledge the gods walked the Earth. If said knowledge got out because Cupid lost control and exposed himself? Well, Morpheus wouldn’t want to be around for the smackdown.

He couldn’t tell Zygi that Jealousy was an ugly creature who was as fearsome as he was dangerous. He also couldn’t divulge that Jealousy—in a fit of rage—might toss around a vehicle or three, in which case he would’ve had to play catch. Mo was relieved he hadn’t had to protect Jeff from Jealousy’s wrath. Somewhere in Jealousy’s twisted mind, there must have been a need or a desire not to hurt Jeff—the creature must have known what Jeff was to him. And finally, there was the issue of who Mo himself was—he wasn’t human either.

Mo twisted a paper napkin the waitress had left as he readied himself to launch into his lie. “Cam called me. He was so mad I could barely understand what he was saying. But I knew something was wrong, so I headed over here. I figured I’d get the story from Jeff. I wasn’t expecting to walk into a shouting match in the parking lot.”

The conversation stopped as the waitress brought their drinks. Mo stirred his Coke, wishing he didn’t have to lie. He wished he hadn’t had to make Zygi sleep through the whole thing. He didn’t want to lie to Zygi about Jeff catching Cam in the parking lot. Nor had he wanted to mess with the cameras in case Zygi tried to watch the argument that never took place. He hadn’t had a choice. How did humans keep all these lies straight? His foray into the human world was turning into a huge pain.

Zygi took a sip of his beer. “It’s just out of character for Jeff to put on that kind of show. He’s usually very controlled.”

“I can tell you now, Cam isn’t. He does try, though. But when he gets mad, everyone around knows it.” Mo shuddered. Boy, was that an understatement.

Zygi shrugged, unconcerned. “I guess love will make you lose your head. Then there was Brad, and that one would make a saint lose his temper. No-good bastard.”

Mo sipped his drink through a straw. Again, he didn’t understand what Zygi meant. “You don’t like Brad much.”

“No. I have no time for liars and users.” Zygi checked his watch and missed the pained look that came into Mo’s eyes. “Damn, I guess time really does fly when you’re having fun. We better call it a night—I have to work early in the morning. You got a way home?”

“No, I don’t. I don’t have a car.” Mo couldn’t tell Zygi that his normal mode of transportation was to appear in a swirl of smoke.

“Then how did you get over here?” Zygi signed the ticket the waitress had left and stood up.

“Grabbed a taxi.” Mo wanted to scream as he added yet another lie to the growing pile he was knee-deep in already, remembering the remark Zygi had made about liars.

Zygi frowned. “You’re staying with Cam, right?”

“Um, yes.”

Zygi grabbed Mo’s hand and turned to leave the cabana. “I’ll take you home. No point in wasting money on a taxi.”

Mo jerked when Zygi touched him. Once again that tingle raced up his arm. “O-oh, okay, if you’re sure you don’t mind.”

Zygi stopped as he made his way through the crowded dance floor and turned back to face Mo. “Believe me, I don’t do anything I don’t want to do.”

Author bio: M.A. Church

M.A. Church lives in the southern United States and spent many years in the elementary education sector. She is married to her high school sweetheart and they have two children. Her hobbies are gardening, walking, attending flea markets, watching professional football, racing, and spending time with her family on the lake.

But her most beloved hobby is reading. From an early age, she can remember hunting for books at the library. Later nonhuman and science fiction genres captured her attention and drew her into the worlds the authors had created. But always at the back of her mind was the thought that one day, when the kids were older and she had more time, she would write a book.

By sheer chance she stumbled across a gay male romance story on the web and was hooked. A new world opened up and she fell in love. Thus the journey started. When not writing or researching, she enjoys reading the latest erotic and mainstream romance novels.

Author Profile: K.C. Grim

Stopping by today is K.C. Grim. I’ve known K.C. for a couple years. As an author on Gay Authors, K.C. has made quite an impact. Between reader choice awards, promotion to Promising Author status and rabid fans, K.C. has proven to be one of G.A.’s more popular authors. Today we get to learn a bit more about what  make’s K.C. click. Make sure you read through to the end and leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of K.C.’s newest book – A Roommate wanted.

Author Profile: K.C. Grim
1)    Tell us about yourself –

Hello, I’m KC Grim, I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, so getting my first book published last year with JMS Book was so thrilling.  I try to balance my time writing for publication as well as write as a Promising Author on GayAuthors.org where several of my stories are posted for free.

I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia with my wonderful husband and our amazing teenage daughter, who keeps us both on our toes.

2)    Do you have a day job besides writing?

Yeah, I do have a day job, even though I’ve had some success with my writing I still have to get up and go to work every day.  I really enjoy my job, if I can’t write for a living then I’m glad that I get to do what I love second and work in Healthcare.

3)    You’ve written several books that you’ve published.  Which one was your first?

loveisinthecards“Love is in the Cards” is the first book that I got published.  It was with JMS Books.  I was excited and nervous and scared and have learned so much since then, but it’s still a story that I’m so proud of.

http://www.jms-books.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=29&products_id=538

4)    Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, and Supernatural Creatures make quite a diverse group of characters.  Where does the inspiration for these characters come from?

I would say that as I kid I was obsessed with fantasy creatures, but as an adult I still am obsessed with fantastic mythical beings.  I guess I never grew out it.

5)    You seem to like many different genre’s. Which is your favor genre? And why? Is your favorite the same for reading as well as right or are they different?

I love science-fiction and fantasy, but I also enjoy a good mystery or action adventure, too.  When I’m looking for a good book to read, I need something where the action keeps moving.  If it slows down too much, you’ve lost me.  It’s the same with the stories I write, I have to keep the action moving forward.

6)    We all have favorite books what’s yours? Is there a writer or writers who inspired you to write or whose writing style you look up to?

I have so many favorite books.  I’m a bit obsessive, so if I like an author, I probably have all of their books.  I was influenced as a young writer by Stephen King, JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and Andre Norton.

7)    Tell us about your upcoming book.

Bump in the Night- paperback coverRight now I’m working on a collection of Supernatural Short Stories.  “Bump in the Night” is 5 erotic of pieces flashfiction that will bein print by the end of June 2013. “A Roommate Wanted” is Book 4 in the Bump in the Night collection.  The Release date is June 2, 2013 from JMS Books.

8)     What is your favorite book that you’ve written and why?

I’m still learning the craft of becoming a good writer.  Every new project that I take on, I feel is my favorite, until I move onto my next new story.  Right now, I’m writing a story featured on GayAuthors.org that I’m totally in love with.  “Pour Me Another,” is so much fun, I’m loving the character and having a blast with the storyline.

9)     Marketing – yes, I said that dirty word. Talking about your approach to ‘selling’ your book and Bump In The Night- A Roommate Wanted this impacts your writing?

Jeeez, the ‘M’ word.  Honestly, it has been dumb luck so far.  I have a blog and twitter and I post story notices on Facebook, but I don’t think I’ve figure out the whole marketing strategy yet, LOL. Anyone who has pointers please send me a message J

10) What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

Creating the story lines.  Here is where I can get as crazy and off the wall as I want while I come up with fascinating new worlds and unbelievable story plots. I’ve heard that ‘everything has been done before’ well, I try to see if I can prove them wrong and create something new.

11) Do you ever model characters after people you know? If so in what way? Looks? Personality? Life events?

Yes all the above! **Runs and hide**

I don’t normally model my main characters after people I know in real life, but lots of the extras or supporting characters are definitely modeled after people I know.  My sister, my childhood best friend, my favorite teacher from school, and even my mother-in-law have become characters in my stories.

Mr Anonymous 2 12)  If you could meet any of your characters, who would it be?

Hmmm, that’s a hard question.  It would have to be Max from “Mr. Anonymous.”  He was such an interesting character; actually both he and Percy were great to work with.  It’s always scary coming-out but he stood by Percy…and he’s really sexy too!

Jerking the door open with as much force as he could, “What do you–” Jordan yelled at the stranger standing in the hallway.

The guy’s dark eyes opened wide as he jerked away from the door.

“Oh my god,” Jordan’s pale face immediately flushed bright red. Noticing that the guy had taken a second and third step back, Jordan needed to stop him before he turned tail and ran.

“I’m sorry if I’m–” The guy tried to apologize, but Jordan quickly stepped into the hallway with him.

“No, I’m sorry! I thought you were the old lady who lives below me,” Jordan tried to explain.

He gave Jordan a curious glance.

Shit that didn’t come out right. “No, what I mean is, I thought she was coming up to complain about the noise. I was moving some furniture around.”

“That explains why you didn’t answer the door the first two times I knocked.” His voice was so deep and sexy.

Jordan felt his heart rate double, sending all of his blood straight to his dick. “I-I-I…uhmmm,” he stuttered for a second before taking a breath to steady his nerves. “I must not have heard you knocking.”

Stepping back into the apartment, he was glad when the guy followed him inside, instead of running away.

“I’m Sebastian,” he said, holding out his hand. “The room is still available, isn’t it?”

The skin of their fingers touched in a casual handshake. It should have been nothing, a simple touch. So, why did it feel more erotic then an all-night bender watching gay porn?

Jordan nodded his head, afraid that he would start stuttering again like an idiot or say something really embarrassing.

Sebastian’s skin was a dark color, unlike anything Jordan had ever seen. It wasn’t quite brown or even a dark olive tone, it appeared to be…almost…red. The light shimmered on his face and bare arms. His fingers itched to touch him again.

Clearing his throat, Jordan asked him, “Would you like to see the room?”

Leave a comment for a chance to win an eBook copy of A Roommate Wanted. One person who leaves a comment will be selected to win on June 16, 2013 using Randomizer.org.

Wednesday Briefs: Second Shot – The Senior Year – 13

wedbriefs badge

Second Shot – The Senior Year – 13

Soccer Background Cover 3.2 Titled copyJason looked at Peter, who gave him the barest of shrugs. “Um, yeah, let me finish getting dressed.”

Matt squinted, but didn’t say anything. Then he nodded, his lips squeezed tight.

“Can I get you something to drink?” Peter asked, but Jason didn’t wait for the answer.

Judging by Matt’s face, it probably wouldn’t be a fun chat. On the other hand, Jason didn’t need to hunt down his teammate.

Changing into a pair of khaki cargo shorts, Jason realized he’d come up to stall. Frowning, he left the room.

He found Matt, cradling a glass of water, sitting on the second hand couch Pete had brought with him. Peter’s absence didn’t surprise Jason.

“Pete said he needed to go get food.” Matt looked at him sheepishly.

The silence lingered uncomfortably long. Jason didn’t make an attempt to end it. He walked over to a chair facing the couch and stared in Matt’s direction. If Matt came to talk, then he needed to start talking.

Finally Matt let out a loud sigh. “I know I kinda fucked up today.

“It’s more than a fuck up, Matt. You tried to hurt Blake.” Letting out some of the pent up frustration, he stood up and spread his arms out. “Why would you try to hurt your own teammate? And why Blake? He’s always been a good guy.”

“Not always.” Matt’s words, whispered under his breath, stopped Jason’s rant.

“What?”

Tilting his head up, Matt cast a defiant stare. “I said he hasn’t always been a good guy.”

“Huh?”

“Please.” Matt seemed less contrite then when he arrived. “Don’t tell me you forgot he called you a fag the first day of practice.”

“That’s what this is about?” Having lost his momentum, Jason sat down. “You’re still mad about that?”

“No, Jase. You said let it go and I did. But he’s…he’s….”

“He’s what?”

“He’s gay.” Matt nearly flinched. “He’s been hiding it since he came to Graydon.”

Matt not liking gay people made more sense than what Jason just heard. “And that’s a reason to try to break his ankle?”

“C’mon, you know I had it under control.”

Jason hadn’t seen the tackle, but ‘control’ wasn’t a word Darryl used. Regardless.  Shaking his head, he refused to be derailed again.

“So you say. But that doesn’t explain why you’re mad.”

“Damn right I am.” The veins in Matt’s neck pulsed as he growled out the words.

“Why?” He resisted the urge to throw a pillow. “What did he do that’s so bad?”

“He’s been lying to us all this time.”

“So? I didn’t tell people I was gay at first.”

Matt waved a hand at Jason. “That’s not it.”

“Then make me understand.”

“You and Pete –mostly you–shoulder a lot responsibilities being an out couple. And you being the team captain and all, you’ve been pretty visible.”

“And that’s Blake’s fault how?”

“He should have stepped up and helped you.”

That was the problem? “You’re mad because he didn’t come out sooner?”

“Yes!” Matt stood up and faced the window just as a thunderstorm started. “Not only did he call you a derogatory name, he’s never manned up. How can I respect someone who’d let one of his best friends, someone he looked up to, do all the heavy lifting, while he sat back and kept safe. He should have come out and helped.”

“It doesn’t work like that, Matt. Everyone comes out at their own pace…..”

He spun around, cutting Jason off. “You didn’t.”

“But I wish I could have.” He shook his head. This wasn’t about him. “Just because I got outted, doesn’t mean Blake needed to come out sooner.”

The twinge of anger never left Matt’s eyes. “He talks about how much he looks up to you….” Matt shook his head and squinted. ” I should have figured it out sooner, but what he said to you the first day threw me.”

“I still don’t get why you’re mad.” Jason realized he’d crept forward in his chair, his voice almost a shout and sat back. “I’m fine with him, why aren’t you?”

“You’re too nice, Jase. You stuck up for him when you should have had him kicked off the team. Instead, you took some of the blame – never figured out how that worked.” Matt picked up his glass and drained the last of his water. “Bottom line, he’s been hiding behind you when he should have standing beside you. Worse, he’s a closet case who pretended to hate gays to keep people from figuring him out.”

Drop by drop, with each word; Jason’s anger toward his friend fell away. A bit of shame replaced the ire. “Gotcha.”

“So you agree?” Matt’s voice sounded hopeful, but guarded.

A nervous laugh broke from Jason’s throat. “No, but I…I appreciate your friendship.”

“Always. But why….”

“Don’t I agree?” When Matt nodded, Jason smirked. “Because I told him not to come out.”

“You?”

“Yeah.” Jason saw that day clearly in his mind. “He told me the truth the day after our run in and I told him to wait until he felt ready.”

“Really?” Matt finally sat down again. “He still should have stepped up. It would have been fine. He had friends he knew he could count on.”

“Like I had?” He didn’t need to mention Jordan’s name. The trial was coming up and everyone on the team avoided the topic.

“Oh, yeah.” The words were soft, almost hushed. “Gotcha.”

Sensing an opening, Jason moved in. “So lay off, please?”

“Sure, I won’t go after him again, but…I’m still pissed.”

Jason opened his mouth but shut it before speaking. Instead he nodded. There’d be time later.  A minute passed and he got up, nodding toward the kitchen. “You wanna stay for dinner?”

“Who’s cooking?”

Jason grinned. “Pete. I only cook for people I don’t like.”

Finally, after a trying day, a small smile slowly grew across Matt’s face. Jason’s friend Matt returned. “Yeah, I’m staying.”

Guest Author Lily Velden and eBook Giveaway for Same Page

Today I have the pleasure of having my friend and colleague Lily Velden Stop by to talk about her new release – Same Page – which is Book One of How The Light Gets In. Being the unfair sort of guy that I am, I included a few non-book related questions to put Lily on the spot. After the interview, Lily is going to hold an eBook give away – just leave a comment and you can be enter. The rules are set out at the end.
Hi, Lily.  Nice to have you back. Re-Introduce yourself to everyone.

Um, hi everyone, I’m Lily Velden, the broad who walks around with one mint-flavored shoe and one chocolate one… Hey, if you put your foot in your mouth as regularly as I do, you want it to taste good!

Can I confess something, Andy? My shoes are actually caramel flavored! I lurves me some caramel!

Okay, okay, I’ll be serious.

I’m a Cancerian, Wood Dragon, No. 9 (um, Chaldean numerology, BTW, LOL) which apparently means: I love my family, love to cook, am impulsive, original, with a bit of a temper, but quick to forgive. I’m honest and a tad too trusting and accepting (hmm, is that a nice way of saying I’m a sucker?) and a ‘what you see is what you get’ person, totally lacking in guile. I’m also generous to a fault, creative, open-minded, kind, warm, and prepared to compromise.

Sounds pretty good, huh?

Can we not ask my ex-husband to verify all of the above???

On top of that, I’m an excited and nervous writer because my ‘baby’ is about to be released!

Same Page - Front Cover1) Your “baby” being your newest book, Same Page, the first book in How The Light Gets In. What’s it about?

Oh boy, where to start! How the Light Gets In is currently two novels (third being written as we speak)

Book 1 of the series; Same Page is due out on 14th June, 2013 and Book 2; The Race is On, has just completed the editing process at Dreamspinner and so hopefully will be released in July or August—hence my excitement and anxiety!

How the Light Gets In is a contemporary love story. Both novels follow the lives of Jaxon Moncrieff, famous American actor, and Liam Lassiter, an up-and-coming artist.

Same Page is pretty much set entirely in Australia as Liam emigrated from Britain to the land Down Under as an adolescent.

It’s taken me quite a while to write the boys’ story—I started in late 2009—and what a journey it’s been. Like any bit of fiction, in parts it reflects a heightened reality, in others, it casts a rosy glow to melt away rough edges, but it also attempts to be ‘real.’ It has a bit of everything: at times, you’ll laugh, at times you’ll cry (well, if I did my job right you will!) and at times you will shake your head at the boys, because isn’t that what we do with friends and family when they say and do things we don’t understand? Or when they can’t see what’s right under their nose?

2) What was the inspiration for the book and the series?

I was in my late twenties, recently separated with three small children under the age of seven to care for, and a friend gave me a tape to listen to by Leonard Cohen. There was one track on it, Anthem that had two lines in it that, when I heard them, I cried. Those lines were: There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.

When I heard those lines for the first time, in fact, every time I hear them, it makes me feel okay about being less than perfect. It makes me feel okay about being a bit broken and flawed and battered by life.

For years and years and years, I’ve always carried around a small notebook with me within which I‘ve transcribed quotes, parts of song lyrics, poems, etc. that have meaning for me. If I’m waiting for a bus, or sitting in the doctor’s surgery, I’ll pull out my current notebook and read over my little snippets, all of which speak to me for one reason or another. There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in has been transcribed into each and every one of my notebooks for the last twenty years. To say those words have resonated with me is an understatement.

And so one day I sat down and began writing a story about two men who each came with their flaws and idiosyncrasies. Who each came with their strengths and their weaknesses. And who each came with their emotional baggage and life histories. Two men, not perfect, but perfect for each other.

3) Wow, sound like you pour a lot of emotions into your characters. Do you find yourself letting the scenes and characters write themselves or do you go back and endlessly tweak a scene to get the emotion just right?

A bit of both, Andy. The boys dictate the scene, but I’m notorious for going back and tweaking. Truth be told, I’m the tweaker from hell! I must have driven the Dreamspinner editors bonkers! I add a sentence, I take one out, I juggle the word order, or swap adjectives! I just want it to be perfect, which is impossible, I know, but I try anyway!

I’m the same with my art—I’d even take a huge handbag with me to my openings filled with all sorts of tools and brushes and when no one was looking (LOL, yeah, right. There’s always someone looking!) I’d touch up or adjust something! Picture Mr. Bean as a woman with wild blonde curly hair sneaking from artwork to artwork, and you’ve pretty much got me nailed!

4) Having had the privilege of reading some of your writing that might not be published, your writing tends to have such vivid imagery. Are most of the ‘scenes’ you write about real or imagined?

Telegherry-RiverYou’re always so kind, Andy—thank you for saying ‘privilege’ and not ‘chore!’

So, if I tell you the scenes are real to me, are you going to send in the men in white coats???

My characters are very real to me. It takes me ages to write a novel as I need to live with my characters for a while. I need to know and understand them inside and out.

I must admit, I live the story with them. When they are happy, I’m walking around with a bounce in my step. When they are hurting, I’m quiet and withdrawn.

I’ll tell you a little story which is kind of funny in retrospect, but will probably having you booking the white van with men in white coats…

While writing Same Page there was a scene where one of the boys (I can’t say which or it will give things away) was very upset. As I wrote the scene, I was blubbering over my keyboard so much I could barely see the screen.

My daughter, Emma, stopped by unexpectedly to visit and so I leapt off the sofa and raced to the front door, drying my eyes as I went. Of course, she could see I’d been crying and so she threw her arms around me, squeezing me tight and bombarded me with questions. What was wrong? Were her brothers okay? Had anything happened to Opa and Oma?

“Something awful has happened and …….. is hurting so bad right now,” I wailed.

Emma gently pushed me away and whacked me around the shoulders, glaring at me and scolding me for scaring her. “Remind me again, that you actually enjoy writing.”

So, yes, I get very involved with my characters!

I know what it is to be happy. I know what it is to hurt. I know what it is to love, and what it is to fear. Like most writers, artists, songwriters etc. I pick my emotions apart and examine them under a microscope in the hope it will allow me to describe them more eloquently. So, yes, in that sense they are real. Most emotions are universal, even if our experience of them is individual.

5) I’ve never been to Australia, and I’m sure many of your readers haven’t as well – tell us a few things we’d like or wouldn’t like about living there.

Mostly when I see adverts promoting Australia they focus on our beaches, and certainly they are wonderful, but personally, I love some barrington riverof the hinterland that runs just about the whole length of the east coast. None of the mountains are so huge as to be noteworthy for their size, but some of the vegetation is so lush and green. A lot of the rivers are pebble-based and so the water is incredibly clear and tastes so sweet. And when you can find a part of the river where there’s some small, shallow mini-rapids they are fantastic to sit in and sip away on something fizzy or a shandy (yep, I’m a wimp who mixes lemonade with her beer) It’s just so relaxing. The rivers are great for tubing too!

Generally speaking, the towns situated in the hinterland have a less frenetic pace of life than the major cities which are situated mostly along our coastline, and yet, because most of our population hugs the coast, it’s not that far to reach a reasonable sized town or city.

I personally don’t like the center of Australia that much, but I have friends that live there who swear by it, so, as with anything, I guess, it’s a matter of taste. I find it too dry and hot and there are so many flies! I lived in the Northern Territory for five years and I SO missed the smell of the ocean!

I think you’d like our laid back, friendly attitude – though maybe you’d find us too laid back LOL! There are parts of Australia where you really would come across the ‘she’ll be right, mate,” attitude – nothing fazes them!

kangaroo golfAs to dislikes, you’d probably not like our creepy crawlies or poisonous snakes, but it’s not like they’re sitting on your front door step every morning. In fact, I’ve only seen a handful of snakes in my entire life, and I’ve lived here since I was two.

On the flip side, you’d see and experience some cute things too. Like, where my parents live, there are always kangaroos on the golf course!

Why not come and see for yourself??? You can stay at my place!

6) ‘lil q, Mike and I come to visit for dinner – what would you serve us knowing Mike doesn’t eat Pork or beef?

When can I pencil you in for??? I love cooking for dinner parties!

Hhm, let me see… I think I’d start with something simple that’s also an introduction to the great choice of seafood we have here in Australia. Say, a Prawn Cocktail made with big, fat, juicy Australian King Prawns served on a bed of lettuce and drizzled with lashings of my homemade cocktail sauce – much tastier than the bought stuff.

Two out of three of my children loved prawns, so I figure there’s a better than 50% chance ‘lil q will as well!

The main course I’ve chosen is with ‘lil q in mind – sorry guys, but I’m a sucker for cute little toddlers! The dish isn’t fancy by any means, but when it’s done right, it’s very tasty. It was certainly a family favorite with my crew. Every time I made it, I always had to make mounds of it because everyone went back for seconds! They still do!

It’s Apricot Chicken served with creamy potato mash and steamed beans, peas, and carrots tossed with real butter.

As for dessert, as I’ve already confessed, I’m a caramel girl, but methinks ‘lil q will be infatuated with chocolate! (a close runner-up for me!) So, I’m thinking a nice light and airy chocolate mousse served with whipped cream and fresh berries. (because as long as you serve something ‘good’ with it you can have something ‘naughty’!!!)

Hopefully that sounds good enough for you to jump on the next plane and come visit!

7) Coffee or Tea? Ice cream or Cake? Chocolates or caramels?

Coffee:            Cappuccino or latte, or my absolute favorite is a Roman coffee – that’s where you put a nip of Galliano in the coffee and top it with loads of whipped cream!!! You want to try one when you come for dinner, Andrew? I always add extra cream (Galliano too, but maybe I shouldn’t admit to that!)

Ice cream:       It makes everything better! I love it served with Ice Magic chocolate and crushed nuts. Oh, and on hot pies, tarts, or strudel, where it starts to melt. Positively sinful, but oh so yummy!

Caramels:        Need you ask??? Caramels, caramels, caramels!

8) Art – you’ve done the cover art for your books. Has your art ever inspired a story?

No, it’s more a case that stories inspire my art making. When I say stories, I mean things I’ve observed, experienced, heard, and felt. A lot of my art is very personal. It speaks of my thoughts, my opinions and beliefs, my feelings, and my experiences.

Some pieces I can part with soon after completion (though, lord knows, if allowed, I’d still be tweaking them when I’m eighty!) Others, I need to own myself for a while, but with all of them, I need to know they are going to a good home. I suppose, I’m the same with my artworks as an animal lover would be with the offspring of a beloved pet.

I once refused to sell a man one of my works, in spite of him being willing to pay double the asking price. All because he was a rude, bigoted, arrogant son-of-a-bitch. Everyone thought I was crazy to refuse to sell to him, but hey, money isn’t everything!

9) Which do you find moves you more, your artist side or your writer side?

That’s a very hard question to answer, Andy! When I’m making art I’m so immersed in it I can hardly concentrate on anything else. I forget time and space. I forget to eat. I’ll look at my watch and think an hour has passed to find that five have. But then, when I’m in the middle of a story, I’m the same. Both satisfy a need within me to create.

10) What’s an ideal day for you?

To wake up without the means of an alarm clock, grab a piece of fruit and go for a nice long walk. Come home and shower, then immerse myself for a few hours in the world of my characters with a nice cup of coffee by my elbow. Stop for a bite to eat for lunch and then spend the afternoon in my workshop. Another walk, maybe some yoga, another shower and then more writing and keeping in touch with my online friends!

For either the lunch or dinner, I’d like any or all of my children to drop by and visit and tell me what’s happening in their life!

Not very exciting is it???

Sorry! What can I say? I love to escape the real world!

11) For whatever reason, you’re forced to evacuate your home with only a moment’s you’ve got a minute to leave and only what you can carry with you – what would you take and why?

My children’s photo albums – I have one for each of them filled with my fave pics of them. It would be hard, but I think I could leave the other albums behind.

Lastly, I’d take my laptop as it contains my life!

Between those things I don’t think I’d be able to carry anything else!

TheRaceIsOnORIG-112) Cycling back to why you’re here, Book Two in How the Light Gets In – The Race Is On - is set to follow this summer – pimp your next instalment a bit.

Okay, picking myself up off the floor where I fell in a heap—as soon as I saw the word ‘pimp,’ Andy I had visions of myself sporting a pair of sunglasses that were so big they made my face look like that of a mosquito. I was wearing white jeans and a fur trimmed jacket with big heavy gold medallions hanging around my neck. Yep, I fell into stereotype hell!!!

So, I’ve picked myself up, dusted myself off and I’m back in original mode!

In some ways, I feel to say anything about The Race is On will give things away in Book 1: Same Page—that some of the tension will be lost, but I suppose the mere fact there is a sequel will tell most people that the story goes on!

In The Race is On, the boys really hit their stride. They have some issues to deal with, such as coming out to Jaxon’s family and sorting out their living arrangements, seeing as one of them calls Australia home and the other the US, on top of which, they both have demanding careers. What they’re not aware of is paparazzi photographer, Rafael Cacciatore, notices the change in Jaxon and begins stalking him even more closely—he wants to be the first to get the ‘money shot’ and expose Jaxon’s lover. Will he out the boys before the boys get a chance to out themselves? As the title says; The Race is On!

Thanks for having me, Andy. As always, it was a pleasure!

New Releases: Monday June 10, 2013

In an effort to help some of my fellow authors, every Monday I post some of the numerous new books that have been released. For the most part these will be M/M Fiction with a heavy bias on Romance. That will probably evolve over time, but for now that’s where it is.

I’ve not read everything that is listed, though I’ve probably read or will read many. Which means inclusion on the list isn’t an endorsement or suggestion. You should read the blurbs provided to see if you’re interested. I’ll post reviews to books I recommend under the ‘Books I Reviewed’ tab. This is just a partial list of what’s new for visitors of my site to check out. That said if you end up reading something listed here and want to comment – please do. I reserve the right, however, to delete nasty or personal comments.

If you’re an author and want to include a new release, email me your blurb, cover image, buy links and any personal links you want included. No excerpts, interviews, giveaways etc. Those are welcome, but can be discussed separately.

The Lion and the Crow by Eli Easton

A historical m/m romance novella offered free as part of the “Love Has No Boundaries” event.

Blurb:

lionandthecrow_EliEaston_CoverThis is a tale about two medieval English knights—Sir William Corbet, aka the Lion, and Sir Christian Brandon, aka The Crow. In a time when duty was everything, personal honor was more valued than life itself, and homosexuality was not tolerated by the church or society, how can these two men reconcile their deepest, most secret yearnings to love another man?

Sir Christian was raised in a household where he was hated for his unusual beauty and for the sake of his parentage. Being smaller than his six brutish half-brothers, he learned to survive by using his wits and developing a gift for strategy. He feels little loyalty to the system that’s abused him since birth.

Sir William, a large and fierce warrior, has pushed his unnatural desires down all his life. He’s determined to live up to his own ideal of a gallant knight. But when he takes up a quest to rescue his sister from her abusive lord of a husband, he’s forced to undertake a journey with Christian. It’s a partnership that will test every strand of his moral fiber, and, eventually, even his understanding of the meaning of duty, honor, and love.

Tuck & Cover: SJD Peterson

2nd Edition

Battle Buddy

TuckandCoverORIGAt nineteen, Shane Tucker joins the army. Tucker is gay but not ready to be open about it, and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell seems like a convenient way to avoid dealing with his sexuality.

The army suits Tucker; he does well from the beginning. Then, during boot camp, he’s assigned a “battle buddy,” Owen Bradford. Owen is a walking, talking wet dream with no concept of personal space. Tucker only survives the constant temptation by venting to his diary.

Two years later, Tucker—now in the Army Ranger program—is paired up with Owen once again. Getting through training while ignoring the sexual tension between him and his battle buddy might be the biggest test of Tucker’s military career.

Tuck & Cover

You may have read Tuck’s diary entries, but they don’t tell the whole story. Tuck will argue the point, but he definitely got a few details wrong—not that I blame him. He was, if you remember, a little sexually frustrated at the time. He probably wasn’t thinking straight. I’ll never get tired of teasing him about that. Anyway, here’s what really happened.

Rangers lead the way! – Owen

Saturday Lunch Meet Up

I took ‘lil q to lunch Saturday with some people who read and write M/M fiction. It was organized by the Metro DC Area Romance Readers group.  As you can see, she had a good time.  The weather was beautiful and she got to see up close one of her new favorite things – boats. (She’s so not getting one btw).  Since weekends are when I spend most of my time with ‘lil q this was a perfect setting – nice people, nice location, nice weather. (And lots of boats for her to point out to me.)

Thanks to Susan for reserving the space and Julie for inviting us.

Soccer Background Cover 3.2 Titled copySince I’m 12 chapters into the Wednesday Brief story, Second Shot- The Senior Year, I thought it might nice to have a cover associated with it.  What I learned is, without even thinking about doing the art work, it’s hard to come up with a cover. You want something that convey’s the theme of the story, that’s eye catching, that’s well done, etc.  And of course the artist really doesn’t know what you want or what to do so you’ve got to have ideas for what you want and convey it to them. Oh, and lest I forget, just because you have an image in your head, doesn’t mean you can get that image from stock. And as I learned, if it’s not in stock, be ready to pay for what you want.

Despite all that – I’m really pleased with the result – so pleased in fact I didn’t want to wait until next week’s Wednesday Brief to shot it off.

Cia Nordwell is the artist. Apart from doing good work, she is really patient with dimwitted  authors [like me]. We went through several Q & A’s before she looked for photographs. Once we had them, I probably asked to change things about 10 times. Nary a complaint was heard from Cia as she tried to make it work for me. And well I think she did a great job.

Cia is doing covers, both custom – like mine – or ready made.  She’s selling them through the Gay Authors store [Click the link to ask for a quote].  Or you can contact her direct on her site: Cia’s Site.

If you like the cover, let her know by leaving a comment or clicking like.
