This is ridiculous, he mentally chided himself. All of the heat was coming out of her house because he was being an idiot and refusing to go inside. Just because he accepted her invitation to go in, didn’t mean he had to stay the night. He could just go in and maybe hang out for a bit. Watch a little TV. Or maybe…
“Dean?”
“Hmm?”
Before he could even blink, Abby reached out and pulled him by his wool scarf into the house and shut the door. The house was dark and – thanks to him – a little cool, but he was able to clearly see the look of amusement on Abby’s face as she moved in close. One of her delicate hands rested on his chest while the other raked up into his hair.
He really liked when she did that.
“Let me ask you something,” she began quietly – her voice going slightly sultry. “Do you want to go home?”
Unable to speak, he simply shook his head.
“Okay.” She gave him a curt nod before moving in even closer. They were practically touching from head to toe. Those big green eyes looked up at him and he knew he’d been fighting with himself over nothing.
“I kind of felt like I was being presumptuous,” he admitted. “We had a great day together and…well…this was really our first date. I didn’t want you to feel like I was pressuring you or pushing you into something you didn’t want.”
“We’d already talked about it,” she said simply. “Hell, I almost skipped dessert because I was really looking forward to coming back here and finally being alone with you.”
His own dark eyes went wide. “Really?”
Abby nodded. “Honestly, I would have been fine with grabbing a pizza and staying in.”
Dean couldn’t help the laugh that came out. “Sure, now you tell me!” he teased right before he reached up and cupped Abby’s cheek in one hand. He stroked the soft skin and then he turned serious. “I meant what I said, Abby. I just didn’t want you to think that this was all I wanted. I really enjoyed going out with you today and I think you know enough about me to know that it’s not something I usually do.”
“I know. That’s why I didn’t throw out my pizza suggestion,” she said, her own expression serious. “It means a lot to me that you were willing to go out tonight and leave your comfort zone. You didn’t have to.” Then she got up on her toes and placed a soft kiss on the side of his throat. “But I’m really glad you did.”
There were so many things swirling around in his head that he wanted to say, but none of it seemed…enough. He wasn’t good with talking about his feelings. That wasn’t his style. But he could show her.
He could spend all night showing her.
Leaning down, he kissed her. It was the kind of kiss that you eased in to – that built up momentum and left you anxious for the next one. And boy oh boy was he anxious for the next one. And the one after that. Abby let out a soft hum that he actually could feel and knew she was feeling exactly as he was.
It was all the encouragement he needed.

TRUMAN GRITT LOCKED the door to Whiskey Automotive and stepped into the stormy September night. Sheets of rain blurred his vision, instantly drenching his jeans and T-shirt. He leaned on the rough wooden railing, ignoring the splinters of wood piercing his tattooed forearms, squinted against the wetness, and scanned the cars in the junkyard they used for parts—and he used to rid himself of frustrations. He rested his leather boot on the metal box where he kept his painting supplies. Truman didn’t have much—his old extended-cab truck, which his friend Bear Whiskey had held on to for him while he was in prison, this apartment, and a solid job, both of which were compliments of the Whiskey family. “I need you,” his brother’s tortured voice implored.
Need me? Truman had hunted down his brother after he was released from prison, and when he’d finally found him, Quincy was so high on crack he was nearly incoherent—but it didn’t take much for f**k off to come through loud and clear. What Quincy needed was rehab, but Truman knew from his tone that wasn’t the point of the call.
Before he could respond, his brother croaked out, “It’s Mom. She’s really bad.”

His citrusy, musky cologne alerts me to his presence first. Probably some expensive brand that I’ve never heard of, but damn if it’s not like honey to a bear, and I’m the bear.
“So, we meet again,” he says, stopping next to me at the end of the plank.
The scent of his cologne intensifies, pouring that honey into buckets.
I glance over, and his eyes are solely on me. That damn grin is splashed on his lips.
“Don’t worry. I left my weapon in the room.”
“And your gray sweatshirt, I see.”
Too bad he replaced it with a nice pair of slacks and a polo shirt. The blue in his shirt only causes his aqua eyes to become more vibrant and alluring.
He leans close to my ear, and my breathing hiccups quickly. “NFL quarterback by day, abductor at night.”
I square my shoulders, turning my eyes directly at him. “I’m sorry, okay? But what did you expect a woman to assume? It was dark, and you were some random guy sitting alone on a beach, trying to hide your face. That bubbling personality of yours wasn’t exactly exuding when I walked by.”
I cross my arms over my chest, and his eyes focus on my pushed up breasts.
“I suppose I see your point.”
“Plus, you’re a big guy, and I think you could have handled me pretty easily,” I add.
That damn smirk grows. “So, the thought of us together crossed your mind, too?”
My face instantly heats. “I meant, you pinning me to the ground.” Once the words leave my mouth, I wish I could grab them back, but he’s too quick.
His eyes flash with excitement, and he widens his stance.
“What?” I ask out of pure annoyance to the fluster this man brings out of me.
“I’m just waiting,” he says with his classic flirtatious tone.
“For what?”
“To hear how you wish last night would have turned out.”
“Ugh. You’re impossible. A typical pro athlete who believes every girl is for your taking.”
“I’m just going along with what you’ve been telling me.”
“Let’s just get through this dinner. Then, you can go to the pool bar and use your charm to pick up a random girl for the night.”
He chuckles that hearty laugh, rolling back on his heels. “You’re one of those then?” He purses his lips and nods, as though he has me all figured out.
“One of who?”
“The girl who acts like she’d never resort to sleeping with a pro athlete.”
“First off, I’m a woman, not a girl.”
My arms clamp tighter together, and again, his vision dips to my breasts.
“My apologies. You’re definitely a woman.” The side of his lips tip up as he glances down once more.
I let my arms fall, and his eyes float back to my eyes.
“I’m not playing a game, Mr. Garrity. I assure you, I don’t want you for a night or ever.”
He steps closer, and my heartbeat speeds up, but I stand my ground, meeting his eyes and trying everything in my power to be unfazed by his nearness.
“Oh, Miss Lincoln, I think you haven’t accepted what you want, but the night’s early.”

I hate mean people, the outdoors, heights.
