ABA Winter Institute

This week I had the absolute pleasure of attending the American Booksellers Association Winter Institute in Memphis, TN! Alongside my fellow Scholastic authors Andrea Davis Pinkney and Brian Pinkney, Kheryn Callender, Brian Selznick, and Sayantani DasGupta, I was given the opportunity to present AND SHE WAS to a huge room filled with independent booksellers from across the United States. Special thanks to Nichole Cousins, a bookseller from White Birch Books in New Hampshire, for her amazing, heartfelt introduction!

Kirkus Reviews Calls AND SHE WAS “A Triumph”!

When you send a book out into the world, you never know how it’s going to be received. Readers and reviewers may love it, hate it, or—perhaps the worst possibility of all—forget about it immediately after reading it.

I’m thrilled that (the notoriously hard-to-please) Kirkus Reviews loved AND SHE WAS—so much so that they gave it a starred review! ⭐️ Thank you so much, Kirkus, for “getting” the book! Read the full review here, or check out the screenshot below:

Picture Book News!

I am SO THRILLED to announce that my debut picture book, co-written with the amazing Rachel Lyons, will be published by FSG Books for Young Readers! When Rachel’s son came out as transgender, their family discovered there were NO picture books for children about trans boys. We set out to fix that. I’m so honored to be a part of this important project.

Here’s the announcement from Publishers Weekly:

Can’t wait to share illustrator news!

New Book Title!

After a whole lot of brainstorming and discussion with the amazing folks at Scholastic, we’ve finally landed on the perfect title for my upcoming novel. It’s called… AND SHE WAS.

This is actually the name of my favorite Talking Heads song, and I think it encapsulates Dara and Mellie’s story just right, and in so many ways. I love it!

I should have a cover to share soon, but in the meantime, here’s “And She Was” by the Talking Heads.
