What They’re Saying about The Walker on the Cape

Toronto Star

“The Walker on the Cape offers some foxily constructed plotting, a winning sleuth figure and an air of charming cheerfulness.”

Anthony Lund, Allbooks International Reviews

“The Walker on the Cape is a promising debut for Windflower and co, and with a constantly moving plot, some clever twists and a pleasant writing style it will not be the last we see of them either. For anyone who enjoys the R D Wingfield’s Frost novels will find plenty to get their teeth into here.”

Ruth Latta, Author of The Old Love and the New Love

“A strong, well-paced plot, characters with distinctive personalities, and the unique Newfoundland setting combine to make The Walker on the Cape a good Canadian read.”

Michael P. MacDonald, Author of Poolroom and Politics

“Mike Martin has produced a very compelling police procedural set in Grand Bank on the coast of Newfoundland. From main character Winston Windflower on down, he has created a group of people that you want to get to know better; hopefully in future stories and other circumstances.”

Southern Gazette, Marystown, Nfld

“History and mystery. Welcome to Grand Bank, Sgt. Winston Windflower. Hope the locals don’t keep you too busy!!”

Ottawa EMC Community Newspaper, Ottawa Region, Ontario

“Novel shows mysterious side of the Rock. Readers are taken through the winding, narrow streets of a small town and are exposed to the town’s gossip mill and wharf-side benches full of old-timers along the way.”

On the Rock

Greetings from Grand Bank, Newfoundland. We had a grand trip down through the Maritimes and had two beautiful days in Gros Morne National Park along the way. We stayed in Gros Morne Cabins in Rocky Harbour right on the ocean and ate fresh lobster and cod caught in the morning and delivered to the fish plant next door at noon. We will be here for the week. Highlight is book signing at Sharon’s Nook and Tea Room in Grand Bank on August 11, 2012. If you’re in the area drop in for a cuppa and the best cheescake on the island.

On the Road Again

The Walker on the Cape and my partner and the dog are going on the road for most of August. No, we will not be tying the dog to the roof a la the Romney Family Vacation nightmare. She gets a nice comfortable seat in the back. But the flow of info from here should reduce considerably. Many of you will not be disappointed but restrain from outward expressions of joy. At least til we’re gone!!

The “trip” will take us through Montreal and Quebec City which is not much to speak of unless you actually get off the highway. But once we get near Quebec City the outlook brightens considerably. We get to roll along the nothern St. Lawrence up near the Gaspe and then dip down through Northern New Brunswick. On the way to Fredericton we get off the super-hiway and take the scenic River Drive along the mighty St. John River and just before we get to our stop for the night we meet an old friend. Mr Giant Potato Head, emblematic of all things potatoish and good about New Brunswick and agriculture on the East Coast.

A night in the historic but renovated Lord Beaverbrook ( a Ramada now I think) and half a day in Fredericton before we beetle across Nova Scotia to meet our destiny and our ferry at North Sydney, a speck on the tip of Cape Breton Island.

At least that is the plan. I’ll give a mini-report on our progress from Fredericton.

…………………

And I am reminded yet again why it’s so much fun to write a book. Your friends say such nice things about you and your book. Some of which are even true!!

From my old friend Cindy Moriarity who came to the Collected Works Book Signing last week with her mother and both bought a book:

“An excellent debut novel. Told in simple down home terms, lulled by the fog and a never-ending supply of local cuisine, the cast of characters is authentic. It sets the stage, for what I hope will be more to come with the same crew – an investigator with much to learn, an entertaining side-kick and a touch of romance. Be warned however, a silent character throughout the book is the food. …I got fat just reading it…peanut butter cheesecake, partridge berry jam….not a book to read after a new year’s resolution! I might be making a trip to Grand Banks after this, but I’ll remember to watch my back. Congratulations on your first novel.”

Toronto Star Mini Review

Toronto Star

Mini-Review of  The Walker on the Cape

Baico Publishing, 252 pages, $20

By Batten, Jack Whodunit Columnist

The murder takes place in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. The victim is a retired fisherman. The sleuth is RCMP Sergeant Winston Windflower, a Cree from an Alberta reserve. And everybody loves a Jiggs dinner of salted meat, cabbage and pease pudding. Can a crime novel get more Canadian?

The murder steers Windflower into deeper Newfoundland mysteries and into some foxily constructed plotting. Mike Martin, a first-time Ottawa author, won’t be mistaken for a literary stylist, but his book offers a winning sleuth figure and an air of charming cheerfulness.

Support Your Local… (Bookstore)

Collected Works

Collected Works Bookstore and Coffee Bar in Ottawa hosted my first book signing on July 26 and it was a smash success. Thanks to everybody who came out in person and those who sent good karma. You all rock!!

Chapters may ruke the world of Canadian bookselling but local bookstores like CW will always be an important community resource for both authors and readers. If you have an independent book store in your community please visit them and help support them as they promote local writers and community events. Without your active support you may lose them just like my home town of St, John’s, NL which no longer has any locally owned or operated book stores. Since 1990 over 500 independent bookstores have closed in Canada. Use them or lose them!!

Visit and Like Collected Works on Facebook.

Grand Comments from Gros Morne National Park

Thanks so much for the opportunity to read your latest book, “The Walker on the Cape”. It afforded me two lovely afternoons on the Shallow Bay beach here in Gros Morne. A page-turner in the grand tradition of the genre, it reminded me of the early work of P.D. James. Your Windflower character is charmingly, skillfully drawn, the plot keeps us engrossed, and the setting is beautifully rendered. I look forward to future chapters as Windflower and Sheila brave the elements and the endless intrigue of Newfoundland’s southern shore.
