Poetic Phonetic
August 21, 2012
I’ve just received an interesting submission from Snakeskin poet Bryan Murphy. He has sent in a ghazal (“Whatever Can”) in syllabics – seventeen syllables per line. Since syllable counts don’t always come out the same in different accents, he has sent the poem in the phonetic alphabet, to demonstrate how it sounds in his (Southern urban British) accent. Here it is – those who can’t manage phonetics will have to wait till the September issue, to read it in more orthodox orthography:

Goodbye details
I've just put a second e-book on sale. Here are the details.
Goodbye, Padania. Parallel text e-book. English and Italian. Author: Bryan Murphy. Translator: Eva Bruno. 98 pages. Price €1.99 from: http://www.bryanmurphy.eu/ebooks.asp
Set in an imaginary future independent country carved out of Northern Italy, “Goodbye, Padania” is the story of a young woman’s attempt to go beyond the role that fate has apparently designed for her: contract killer. Against the background of the death agonies of a pariah state, Daria Rigoletti transforms herself first into a people-smuggler and then into a cult leader, but circumstances combine against her attempts to break free of violence.
As well as being entertaining in itself, this parallel text edition aims to provide material for learners and teachers of English, Italian and translation.

HQ Poetry Magazine
The postman has just delivered my subscription copy of HQ Poetry Magazine (formerly The Haiku Quarterly), which Kevin Bailey has edited for a number of years.
Although it is a print magazine, it does have a web presence at http://www.hqpoetry.co.uk with selected poems and subscription information. It needs more subscribers to ensure that its next (42nd) issue will not be one of the last.
For the first time HQ Poetry Magazine includes something by me. Since I cannot post a link, here is the whole short poem:
Reprieve
This blind metal coffin,
forged in a distant city
I now call my home,
ploughs over country crossroads.
Synapses, slowed by green light,
let fingers slip across the wheel;
undeterred, the car swerves
into a future where we may write anew.
