Accidental Creative podcasts

The Accidental Creative Podcast

I’ve been listening to The Accidental Creative podcasts for the past few weeks and really enjoying the productivity tips and strategies Todd Henry shares in his audio posts and interviews with some pretty cool people like Seth Godin. In today’s busy and demanding world, creative people have to be brilliant, prolific and healthy to survive in the long-term but pursuing all three of those feels incredibly difficult!

There’s a ton of great info in his archives and I...

2012 Review – 2013 Resolutions

Whew!

What a year, guys.

Here are just the highlights from 2012:

- created, crowdfunded and published my first book! (and people don’t seem to hate it! ^_~)

- Met Dan Harmon at the Community art gallery show which I participated in

- Started getting more serious freelance work for some reason. (I suspect it’s because of the new site design. Simpler, less intimidating.)

- Got interviewed and reviewed a few times

I’m so so happy I’ve been able to accomplish much of what I’ve set out to do and even tho...

Living Well on Less

This was the podcast I was on a few weeks ago with C. Spike Trotman. I’ve been blessed to have a penny-pinching partner so this topic is actually one that I’m quite familiar with. As a comic artist, it’s important to have a very good grasp of your financial situation because 1) if you’re freelancing, that’s of utmost importance and 2) if you’re going to be self-publishing and starting your own business, it becomes even more so.

I make some points about finding your own tribe which is a concept...

Participate in your Community

Sac-con Artist Alley 2006

The comics world is a fairly small and enthusiastic environment. I didn’t actually know much about the scene until I started hearing about local and major conventions around the Bay Area. I realized, “Oh wow, anime/manga-loving kids actually get together every year!” Here are a couple of ways you can engage in the community and start developing a platform for your own work in the future.

1. Utilize social media.

Here’s a tip I found has worked for me on Twitter, my favo...

New Year, New Style and a Valentine for you

2013-02 VdayCard

*dusts off blog*

Happy new year and Happy Valentines, guys! First off, my apologies for the lack of updates since January. Recently, I’ve started getting buried in freelance work which has been good for me and the bills but hasn’t been good for 1)blogging and updates and 2) finishing up the Vol. 1 PDF I’ve been teasing since November. That’s completely my fault but I’m in unfamiliar waters and just learning as I go. I’m the hardest on myself on matters like these but I’m resolved to organize m...

Polterguys is now a Featured Comic on MangaMagazine

I’ve already mentioned beforehow much I appreciated MangaMagazine’s contributions to the growing local manga industryand I thought their site would be another great community to introduce my work to. So, I started uploading comic pages and illustrations a few months earlier and have been updating there consistently.

I’m very happy to announce they have invited me to be a Featured user on their site!

I consider myself very fortunate to be included in a roster of such talented fellow artists. (Se...

Do your homework.

Self-publishing comics is not a route for the lazy. I’m sure you can get away with exerting the minimum amount of effort but you shouldn’t expect blockbuster results and immediately at that. No, pursuing this endeavor requires patience, an open and curious mind and the willingness to experiment and take on unique challenges.

To understand how to be good at it, you have to learn about the different components involved and how to do perform well in each of them. I’m still figuring out many thing...

Site updates and Polterguys news

Polterguys on MTV Geek

General Updates

You may have noticed the new site design! I still have a lot of clean-up to do but I’m happy to say it should be infinitely more stable than my previous one. As much as I loved the old iteration which enabled me to feature Polterguys on my site, the tinkering I make to get it to behave usually manages to bring the whole thing down somehow. I’m sure glad that’s going to be over!

I will be building a stand-alone site for Polterguys in the near future. In the...

How to Run a Successful Kickstarter for your Manga

Running a crowdfunding campaign through websites like Kickstarter or IndieGoGo can be incredibly exciting and rewarding. There is a genuine rush seeing friends, family and yes, even complete strangers provide monetary support for your creative project. It’s especially empowering for a beginning creator who doesn’t have the financial backing of a professional publisher and must publicize, produce and sell their beloved works out of their own pockets.

While I think there are far more exhaustive...
