Moonstone Guinevere Miles—known as Ginny to people who didn’t want to incur her fierce and everlasting wrath—heaved her suitcase off the luggage reclaim belt with an “Oof!” and placed it on the floor, a sigh of relief escaping her. At least the thing had wheels—she didn’t really have the energy for carrying a heavy suitcase all the way through Customs and out to Arrivals. The long, tiring flight had seen to that.

No matter how much she tried, no matter how exhausted she was, she simply could not fall asleep on a plane. Ever. Eye mask, ear plugs, meditation, bloody whale music—nothing helped. She’d long since resigned herself to staying awake while snores from other passengers emanated around the cabin. At least it had only been about seven and a half hours since taking off from Heathrow—she couldn’t imagine what state she’d be in if she ever flew any longer than that—to Australia, New Zealand or somewhere.

Doubtful that would ever happen, though. It had taken long enough for her to get her backside out to the east coast of America, where her parents had been running a retreat since retiring five years ago. But then, things were different now, weren’t they? Which was why she was even here in the first place—it wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

Thinking of her parents brought an inevitable smile to her face, and inserted a little more spring in her step. Despite the energy and mood suck that had been the flight, she was excited to be here. She was eager to see her parents, and to find out exactly what they’d built up over the last five years. She’d seen photos and videos, but it wasn’t the same as actually being there.

When they’d first announced they were using their retirement nest egg to open a retreat in Upstate New York, she’d been floored. Who the hell retires, only to take on a massive project like that? Surely the whole point of retiring is to wind down, enjoy some free time, relax? But no, her mum and dad—who, to be fair, had never been what one would call conventional—had set their hearts on it. They’d had a huge purge of their belongings, sold their cars and house, and jetted off across the pond, leaving Ginny shocked and not a little bereft. She’d been used to having them close by and had quickly realized just how much she’d taken that for granted.

At the same time, her career as a chef had taken off and she’d become so busy that her parents’ sudden distance hadn’t made the blindest bit of difference. She barely saw the inside of her own flat, never mind her friends and family. This was the first Christmas she’d had off work since then, too, and she was looking forward to spending it with her parents more than she could put into words. They’d been big on the festive period ever since she was a baby, and as such, Ginny’s brain was stuffed full of warm, fuzzy memories of Christmases past. They’d been useful to get her through the last five crappy ones, too, where a microwaved ready meal was the best she could hope for, if she hadn’t managed to wangle a free meal from the place she’d been working at at the time.

Her smile widened, and she walked faster still—God, just how big is this bloody airport?—desperate to see her mum and dad and start the Christmas holiday with a bang. Anticipation rushed through her. They’d have turkey and roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, mounds of vegetables, desserts laden with enough calories to last them until Valentine’s Day, Christmas carols, amazing decorations, a beautiful tree, fairy lights…

And Santa Claus. Two of them, in fact, jumping up and down enthusiastically and waving wildly at her, with not a rotund belly in sight.

Ginny was so excited, she couldn’t even be bothered with the embarrassment she might have felt at being greeted in a public place by her parents dressed up in Santa outfits. Plus, nobody knew her here anyway, so who cared?

She scurried around the barrier, almost flipping her case in her haste to turn a corner, then covered the remaining distance between them in seconds flat and released the handle of her suitcase. A series of squeals and exclamations went up—from all three of them—and then everything went dark as Ginny was enveloped in a warm, fluffy embrace, her face crushed up against what she suspected was the white fur trim on her mother’s jacket, and kisses rained down on her. It was all she could do to suck in oxygen as she was squeezed and squeezed them right back. She was assailed by the scents of clean clothes, shampoo, perfume, and cologne—all perfectly lovely smells by themselves, but somewhat overwhelming all at once. Unintelligible murmurings reached her ears, but she didn’t bother to reply since she had no idea what was being said. And she didn’t need words, anyway. All she needed at that moment in time was to soak up the enormous outpouring of love she was experiencing.

She was so bloody happy, she thought she might pop.

Writer Wednesday -Why Self-Publishing Works for Me

Self-Publishing had, and to some extent still has, a stigma attached. It was for people who can’t find a ‘real publisher’, substandard books and a shoddy attitude.

That simply isn’t true – there are substandard, badly edited, badly written books put out by people, that’s true but that could be said of ‘traditionally’ published books. I read, recently, a book so badly formatted and put together that a simply couldn’t take anymore and gave up. It was from traditional press. I’ve read some rubbish put out from traditional publishers and some incredible books by indie pubbers.

Not every writer wants a traditional publisher, and not every book is a good fit. I suspect mine wouldn’t be – dark, violent fantasy with sex, slavery and vengeance. Indie publishing allows the less mainstream, more varied and adventurous books to see the light of day. Those books that would be serious curbed by a traditional house, the quirky, the off the wall books.  Agreed they aren’t for everyone – no book is.

What are the upsides? You are your own boss. The deadlines are yours – and can be moved. The royalties are yours. KDP pay 70% on ebooks between 2.99 and 9.99 and that’s a decent chunk. It’s very unlikely you’d get that with a publishing house.

You get to control everything – what you want for the cover, uploading the book, keeping tabs on the royalties and how the book is progressing in the publishing cycle. It’s your book, you control it.  You can write the book YOU want to write (and read) – although keep in mind it’s unlikely to be a best seller just because you think it’s awesome.

Babelcube – through which I publish the foreign language edition – they are slow and their customer service is a bit pants.  I have to wait until the link arrives to know if a book is published, and for pretty much every single one I have found the book on Amazon by searching my author page BEFORE the link has appeared.

There are pros to a publishing house behind you, without a doubt. The marketing, usually an editor, the clout that the house has. For me it works with Perseid Press for specific stories – the Heroes in Hell, and the Heroika franchises. They are different to my usual work, and part of a greater shared world, and shared theme. It’s a lot of fun to write for Perseid and the owners are great people, wise, experienced and generally awesome. It’s a choice that works for specific stories for me. And I’ll write for Perseid as long as they’ll have me.

Self-publishing is hard work, it’s a steep learning curve. Writing the book is the easy part! You have to learn to be a formatter, proofreader, editor, cover designer, marketer, social media guru, researcher and had a thick skin. It’s better, if you have the budget to hire at least an editor. You don’t see your own mistakes, your brain knows what should be there and overrides your eyes. That scene is awesome right! Not necessarily. Does it bring the story forward? Does it develop the plot or character? Or is it six paragraphs of description?

I’ve learned a lot – far more than I would have had I been traditionally published, and I’ve encountered and befriended a lot of people. The indie/SP community is, generally, very supportive and helpful. It’s daunting – and many people simply don’t have the skills to be a Jack of All Trades. I didn’t.

I’ve learned formatting, editing, cover design, social media platforms I’d never had considered. I’ve been encouraged to write what I’ve wanted to write and to not give a damn if someone doesn’t like it.  And that’s the thing – not everyone will like a book. From Shakespeare to 50 Shades of Grey there are people who think they are bloody awesome, and others who think they are terrible, and everything in between. There simply isn’t a book that everyone will enjoy. That’s fine. It makes it interesting. A publishing house is going to be cautious about a new author, and a book that pushes the boundaries, or is a little odd, is very long, or very short, or is not in a genre that is popular RIGHT NOW.  Self publishing gives an author the opportunity to bring the book to life, to bring joy to readers (hopefully).

Self-publishing and small press publishing work for me – I like being in control of my work. I like learning new skills and solutions. It surely doesn’t work for everyone. Nothing does.

*Tell us a bit about yourself:

How did you become involved with audiobook narration and production? That is a long story…but I have an Actor friend who has always said I should use my voice, eventually I reached a time in my life when I could investigate that option. I approached a voice artist local to me, Andy Turvey who is somewhat of a guru and whose advice I have valued and continue to appreciate. Audible told me to contact ACX and here I am, just over 18 months later, 16 books through ACX and various voiceover jobs completed.

Tell us about some of the titles you’ve narrated. Do you have a favourite amongst these? Titles have varied from Thrillers, the paranormal, Ghost stories, the story of Joan of Arc, and Children’s books.

Do you have a preferred genre?  Do you have a genre you do not produce? Why is this? I seem to work on a number of Ghost stories. I am not sure why. My first commission was Veiled by Kat Green, which was pretty gruesome.  I have now completed 3 books for Kat and numerous other ghost stories, including a phantom caper in Las Vegas, the sad tale of a Mistletoe Bride, and of course The story of Blossom Rise.

If you could meet anyone from history or literature for dinner who would it be and what would you eat? I think it would have to be Joan of Arc, having narrated a book about her life. I have had connection with France for over thirty years, I would be interested to see what she would have eaten with the Men that supported her quest, although not in battle when she simply had bread and wine, to see if there are dishes that are still recognised on a French menu today. I expect so!

What are you working on at present/just finished? I have just completed a children’s book and I am about to work on a new genre for me, it feels very like a ‘chick flick’, in style.

*Tell us about your process for narrating?  (Be as elaborate as you like.) First thing, is to read the book carefully and think about the tone and the accents of the characters. I like to know the author’s take on characters too. It is important that the author recognises their work! I then work through chapter by chapter, usually working with the author to ensure that they are happy every step of the way.

What aspects do you find most enjoyable? I enjoy finding the voices and accents for each character. It is not always easy, and if it is a long book I make sure I know in which chapter the characters appear, so that I can ensure the voice is right later on in the book.

What do you find least enjoyable? The editing side. The ironing out the lumps and bumps within the sound file. I don’t think listeners necessarily appreciate how long this takes for a humble narrator in their own studio or sound booth. They are used to seeing clips of famous actors in a studio with a sound engineer on the other side of the glass who will ultimately edit and clean the files.

Do you consider royalty share when looking for books to narrate? If not why is this? Do you think this a fair split for your time? It is a good way for a beginner to gain experience. I am hoping that one day I get to have a sound engineer on the other side of the glass!

Why do you think audiobooks are becoming so popular? My friend, who has been shielding over Lockdown says that audiobooks stop her feeling lonely. I guess, in our busy lives, audiobooks can be absorbed whilst doing something else such as driving or exercising.

Do you prefer a spoken book, or reading? For you how do they differ? Reading, every time I am afraid!

Can you remember the first audiobook you owned? To Kill a Mocking Bird, Narrated by Sissy Spacek, she is perfect.

If you are an author, do you produce your own audiobooks or do you prefer to look for an independent narrator? Why have you made this choice? Maybe I’ll write something one day…

What is the best piece of advice you’ve had? I was told to be persistent and patient.

If you could narrate any book you wanted which would it be and why? A book that went on to be an unexpected bestseller would be nice…especially if I was able to narrate it with a sound engineer behind the glass!

Please tell us a silly fact about yourself. I sneeze when I eat mints and good quality chocolate! I am the same height as Dolly Parton!
