Book Spotlight – Paradox – Science Fiction #Scifi

Title: Paradox: Book One of The Singularity Chronicles

Author: Michael Woudenberg

Genre: Science Fiction

Main character description (short): Kira Vanden Brink is a renowned AI researcher struggling with the puzzle to unlock the consciousness of her mother that was uploaded years prior while trying to avoid a looming worldwide AI apocalypse.

Synopsis:

“In the battle over advanced AI, will we lose our humanity or learn what truly makes us human?”

Kira and Noah face a choice: Do they follow in their father’s footsteps, advancing Artificial Intelligence to allow their dying mother to live on? Or do they let her rest in peace and step away from the technology that is dividing humanity?

Kira knows her choice and follows her vision to make a sentient AI that captures all of who her mother was. Her path challenges her commitment as she weaves together biology, psychology, philosophy, and robotics, working with world-class scientists to unlock the complexity of the human mind and achieve technological singularity.

Her brother Noah follows his own vision of humanity stepping back from advanced technology. He wants to return to an existence focusing on natural connections, not the artificial world of computers and virtual reality. He leads a team of elite resistance fighters to defend humanity against the dangers of AI yet finds himself questioning which side is right.

In the chaotic battle that ensues, will they lose their humanity or will they learn what truly makes them human? They face a paradox with no easy answers.

Brief Excerpt 250 words:

“I’ve got to get to Mother!” She yelled.

“You’ve got to get to safety!”

“No! We are out of time! I’ve got to get to Mother with the puzzle. This is the only chance we have left!” She shouted, pulling on him to change directions.

“Kira!”

“You know I’m right. You know this is the only way to stop her! You know she can’t do this by herself!” She gasped between each statement, her breath short and catching with pain.

War. Humans always seemed to be at war. At war against nations, at war against cultures, at war against ancient grudges, at war against AI; humanity was always at war with humanity.

The toll had been catastrophic. Kira didn’t know if she believed half of what she heard though; there was so much disinformation, deep fakes, and psychological operations that you couldn’t separate fact from fiction.

The second lab was where they had the code patch they developed to rein in the AI that they called Mother. Downstairs was another lab, this one designed to upload human consciousness as a digital copy of biological reality. This was how Mother was started and Kira realized this was the only way Mother could be stopped.

“I’m going to upload myself. We don’t have time to play the games anymore. I can work from the inside.”

“You’ll die.”

She looked down at the blood. “I’m already dying.” Then looked into his eyes. “Load me with the patch. That’s how we’ll solve the puzzle.”

Why should readers buy this book (50 words max)?

The goal of this book is to leave the reader wondering which side they’d pick whether AI or a return to a more natural living and yet have learned a ton more about what it means to be human!

Dirty Dozen Character Interview – Claudia Braniff

Character Name Claudia Braniff

Tell us a little about yourself.

I own Needs Must, a charming bookshop I just opened not too long ago. I guess I should just come out with it…I’m an empath and a witch.

How did you end up in the situation you’re currently in?

Well, I bought my shop sight unseen because a ghost told me to. I ended up moving with my cat and my Book to this charming little town called Healing Springs. I wasn’t expecting to find a community here, but I did. Before that, I moved around a lot. The Book usually led me where I needed to go and helped me find those who Needed the Book…but you know how it is. There’s a lot of superstitious folks out there, and they naturally distrust people like me.

Do you believe in monsters?

Oh yes. But not the kind that come out at night. I’ve seen and felt the real monsters, and they are all too human. The sorrows and horror that humans inflict on each other are way worse than anything that lives in the shadows.

Do you believe in magic?

I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t.

Who is your greatest friend?

My cat Stryga is my best friend. You could say we can see through each other’s eyes. Now, my best human friend would be Sheila. She was the first person to welcome me to Healing Springs and we have become fast friends since.

Who is your greatest enemy?

Right now, it’s Kelly Ann. She seems to think it is okay to take whatever she wants.

Tell us about your family.

There isn’t much to tell. I don’t know my family. I grew up in the foster system, which made me pretty much a loner. I’ve never bothered with a coven, too political and messy. I’ve been fine with me and Stryga. That’s my family.

What is your greatest skill or asset?  Being an empath. I can read people’s true feelings, although that’s a two-edged sword. Some people are holding in a lot of pain, and that hurts. Even the idea of touching somebody that’s evil? That would be horrifying. I tend to avoid touching people at all unless I need to. Also, my shop. There are books there that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Some of them are meant for just one person and nobody else. My shop gives people not only the books they want, but more importantly, the ones they need.

Do you believe in gods?

I believe in goddesses. In fact, I think there might be one in Healing Springs…at least part time.

How do you think others see you?

Probably a little standoffish. I don’t mean to be but being able to feel people’s emotions can be a little overwhelming, scratch that…very overwhelming at times. I’ve been working on a few techniques that help me block random emotional outbursts, but that’s still hit or miss. Luckily, my new friends don’t seem to mind that I need time to myself to recharge.

What is your greatest fear?

Pitchforks and angry villagers.

What do you think of your author or creator?

You know? She is kind of odd. Not in a bad way, but she spends more time with her animals and in her head than with actual people. Now that I think about it…I might be based on her just a wee bit.

Claudia first appears in Needs Must.

Of course, there are pets. Three cats, three chickens, and the occasional lost cow that wanders in. Dirty Dozen Author Interview – K. L. Rhavensfyre

Welcome to KL Rhavensfyre

Please tell us about your publications or works.

So far, I have 23 books and short stories published. I started as a romance writer but have since branched out to paranormal and dystopian.

Do you think the written word (or art) brings power and freedom?

Absolutely. Without art…all forms of art…there would be no civilization. At least, no civilization I’d want to live in. Creativity and fiction all feed the collective soul of humanity. I often comment that without those that think of the wildest, craziest, impossible things…there would be no starting point for the scientific brains to ask how they could make that idea into reality. Jules Verne comes to mind when you ask that sort of question.

As to power and freedom? The freedom to read whatever you like and learn from many, many different ideas and viewpoints is freeing in itself. Only those who do not want freethinkers try to control what is allowed.

What’s your greatest networking tip?

Become friends with and respect other authors. That way you can work together instead of against each other when you have new books out.

What is your writing space like?

My main writing space is portable. I do have an office away from where the dogs and cats can go, and of course, there are books…lots and lots of books for research purposes. Because I have ADHD I work on a tablet and portable keyboard, and if I need to and the weather is good, I often down by the river and write there. If that’s not enough, I convince the wife to head out in our RV to a local state park to get a change of view.

Tell us about your latest piece.

Needs Must is my newest book. It’s a cozy cottage-style fantasy and one of my favorite books I’ve written.

What’s your next writing adventure?

I’m working on a Solstice/Xmas novella that takes place right after the events in Needs Must. Plus, I have a half-dozen ideas and partial works that I’ll be getting back to after the holidays. Some will revisit worlds I’ve already built, and others are brand-new ideas.

What are your views on authors commenting on reviews?

Conflicted. I think we should have the right to stick up for ourselves when someone uses reviews to bully you. I also like to acknowledge good reviews.

How do you deal with bad reviews?

Luckily, I don’t get many. When they do come in, I tend to ignore them, since I’m not supposed to respond to them. Other than that, I just say what I tell other authors. You won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. What one reader will love; another will hate. That, and I do write some heavy stuff that might poke a few emotions that make the reader uncomfortable if it hits too close to home.

Tell us a silly fact about yourself.

I collect zombie heads and put them up around the house. I even have one I take with me when we travel.

Are indie/self-published authors viewed with skepticism or wariness by readers? Why is this?

Not as much anymore. More trad authors have started to go indie because they get better control over their works. I think we need to respect authors for going indie. It’s scary as hell and a lot of work, but ultimately, I think it’s better for them. Readers get to support (financially and emotionally) their favorite authors and not some publishing house that takes the lion’s share of the royalties.

What are your hopes for the coming year?

To keep writing and get the second book to Ladysmith out.

With the influx of indie authors do you think this is the future of storytelling?

Yes and no. I think there is room for trad authors as well as indie authors. I think we will see more and more trad authors go hybrid or indie. Some will still like the security that trad publishing offers, because there’s a lot of footwork involved that is tedious and not easy for everyone. For me, I like the control over my works that indie publishing offers.

As to how it will affect storytelling: I think it will offer up so much more than what publishers will put out. I read somewhere that publishers don’t necessarily publish the best stories, but the stories that will sell. That’s a popularity contest that loses way too many unique voices. I think the time of publishing houses as gatekeepers to the written word has come and gone.

Synopsis

Meet Claudia Braniff, the owner of Needs Must and newest resident of Healing Springs where old magic flows like the Springs themselves.

Claudia Braniff isn’t your average Healing Springs transplant, but she’s about to become one of its more interesting ones. She bought her shop from a dead woman, sight unseen, then packed up her cat, her Book, and herself…and moved across the country with only her magic to guide her.
All she wants to do is open her bookshop and move into her upstairs apartment.
That should be easy, right?
Not at all.
With the prior owner still taking up residence in the building, and the local bully trying to convince her to sell Needs Must, she finds herself teaming up with a small band of locals who are anything but ordinary.
With a twist of her wrist and a desire to do good, Claudia is caught between needing to get back something important to her that was stolen and trying to find the patience to do it “The Healing Springs way.”
Needless to say, it’s almost impossible to control a ghost of a witch with her own agenda. Things start to get messy, and she finds herself tangled up in small town antics. While Claudia gets to know the town and the people living there, we discover that not everything is as it seems. Even a town as magical as Healing Springs can grow a few bad apples, and when greed clashes with magic, the outcome is well, a bit insane.

Enjoy this cozy fantasy. A little dark, mostly not, and always full of magic.

Scourge

A Darkhurst Novel Book 1

by Gail Z. Martin

Genre: Dark Epic Fantasy Adventure

Three undertaker brothers fight the monsters who killed their family—and uncover a plot larger and far more dangerous than they ever imagined.

In a city beset by monsters, three brothers must find out who is controlling the abominations. The city-state of Ravenwood is wealthy, powerful, and corrupt. Merchant princes and guild masters wager fortunes to outmaneuver League rivals for the king’s favor and advantageous trading terms. Lord Mayor Ellor Machison wields assassins, blood witches, and forbidden magic to ensure that his powerful patrons get what they want, no matter the cost.

Corran, Rigan, and Kell Valmonde are guild undertakers left to run their family’s business when guards murdered their father and monsters killed their mother. Their grave magic enables them to help souls pass to the After and banish vengeful spirits. Rigan’s magic is unusually strong and enables him to hear the confessions of the dead, the secrets that would otherwise be taken to the grave.

When the toll exacted by monsters and brutal guards hits close to home, and ghosts expose the hidden sins of powerful men, Corran, Rigan, and Kell become targets in a deadly game and face a choice: obey the guild or fight back and risk everything.

Scourge is a fast-paced, action-packed, monster-filled fantasy adventure with non-stop twists and turns, loyal brothers, found family, forbidden magic, vengeful ghosts, high-stakes intrigue, and dangerous secrets set in a vibrantly visualized world.

Swift Six Character Interview Ava McNealy #Sci-fi #MeetaCharacter

Character Name Ava McNealy.

Which book/world do you live in? Virtual Rebel.

Tell us about yourself: I’m a sixteen-year-old girl who absolutely loves VR gaming. I’m also pretty good at it. Of course it helps, when it’s basically the only thing to do around here. The Ungulithi, the aliens who rule over Earth, pretty much keep us in a state of lockdown.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses? I think my greatest strengths are also my weaknesses. I’m impulsive, which comes in handy in The Haven, the VR program I use. But my impulsiveness doesn’t always work out in the real world.

Name three important people/creatures/institutions in your world (such as lovers, pets, government institutions, leaders, gods etc). My dad is pretty awesome. I mean, I love my whole family, but my dad is pretty important to me. So are my friends, Lucas and Ji Yeon. I don’t have a lot of friends, and they’ve stuck with me through thick and thin. I know I can count on them.

What does heroismmean to you? Kicking some bad guy ass and rescuing kittens from trees? I don’t know, I play a lot of hero types in The Haven. They seem to do a lot of that kind of stuff.

What do you think of your creator’? Eh, I’m pretty agnostic as to if that guy exists. If he does, he’s a jerk and should leave me alone.

Give us your favourite piece of advice: Don’t think. Follow your instincts. Sure, it might not work out sometimes. But who cares? Most of my life is in The Haven. If it doesn’t work out, you can always respawn. Right?

What are your top 10 favorite authors?

Wow – it’s difficult to restrict it to just 10, but here goes:

Terry PratchettAgatha ChristieMichael CrichtonJohn WyndhamCiamh McDonnellJohn MarrsRaymond ChandlerJK RowlingImran MahmoodMatt Haig

What book do you think everyone should read?

I’d like to see The Giver by Lois Lowry on all school curricula. Aside from being a fantastic story it’s got so many interesting themes and discussion points I think it would be a brilliant book for youngsters to study. Here in the UK there seems to me to be an overemphasis on historic fiction. There is some 20th century fiction on the syllabus too, but I’d like to see more modern texts studied, and this would be a great example.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing this book?

I did some research on the possibilities for colonization of other planets – how many people would be needed and what the criteria for a suitable planet would be – and also on climate change, space-travel/moon landings, and human history such as wars and the holocaust. So quite a bit really.

Do you see writing as a career?

I’d love it to be, but not many authors manage to make it their full-time job. If I could make enough from writing to just work part-time I’d be happy.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I read every night before I go to sleep. I read quite a few different genres. Lots of sci-fi obviously, and fantasy too, but also quite a bit of crime, especially older works like Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler. I like authors whose stories have lots of twists in them too, for example John Marrs, Simon Kernick, Linwood Barclay and Imran Mahmood. I also often read middle-grade fiction when I fancy reading something a bit different.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I like to work with music in the background, but it’s got to be either something without lyrics or something I know so well I can listen to it without giving it too much attention. I’m a big fan of trance (dance) music, and I find that perfect to write to.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

Good question! I’m just about disciplined enough now to write one at a time, but I do have a tendency to think of other ideas whilst I’m in the middle of a book and have to rein myself in so I don’t neglect the story I’ve started. It’s great to have lots of ideas, but you have to be careful not to lose focus.

Pen or type writer or computer?

Computer. I can type much faster than I can write, and I make lots of changes to my work as I go / when editing, so writing on a computer is perfect.

What advice would you give new authors?

Two things. Number one – be a plotter. Create a really good plan for your story before you start writing it. You can change it as you go, but I really think it helps to know how each chapter is going to help tell your story and how the story arc is going to progress over the course of your book. And number two – write it. Don’t worry if you don’t think one chapter or scene doesn’t work, or even if you miss out a scene or two. Keep writing and get to the end, then you can go back and add bits and change bits. Just get that first draft written.

Describe your writing style.

Concise and to-the-point. For me, as a reader, some books just give you too much description, and I find myself skipping over it to get to the next bit of action or dialogue. Just give me enough to be going on with and I’ll fill in the blanks in my mind. I think I write the way I like to read.

What makes a good story?

A good story needs a good basic premise. It needs at least one character you care about enough to want to keep reading to find out what happens to them, and plenty of obstacles in their way. Plot twists are good, and it must have a proper ending.

What are you currently reading?

The Passengers by John Marrs. I’m a big fan of his work, especially his near-future stories like this one. There are few writers better at making me keep turning the page, and his ability to throw in twist after twist really is second to none.

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I do a lot of planning before I begin to write. I like to have a clear plan for each phase of the story (I generally work to a 7 phase structure with a number of game-changing moments throughout), then for each chapter – what’s going to be in it and how it’s going to progress the story. I also structure character development phase-by-phase and chapter-by-chapter.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

Thinking as a reader, I think what most of us want is books that are familiar up to a point but with something about them that makes you sit up and take notice. That’s the challenge as a writer.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

That kind of depends on how you measure it. I might be playing around with an idea in my head on and off for a couple of years before I start writing anything, but once I do start writing it probably takes me about six months to create my outline, write it then edit it.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Yeah, definitely. I try not to let it bother me too much though. I’m a “plotter” rather than a “pantser”, which means that I have a clear and detailed plot for my books before I start writing them, so it’s easy for me to move on to the next scene if I get stuck, then come back to it later.

If I am stuck on a particular scene or chapter I often go for a walk and think about it as I’m walking. There’s something about the way the human brain works that it likes solving problems when it’s doing something else at the same time, so that helps most of the time. It’s like when you can’t remember something, then it comes to you whilst you’re in the shower or on the toilet!
