Today's PokemonGo - Saturday, December 9, 2017
Early walking, because the family is busy, today, and I didn't know what walk-time I would get - and I was pleased to see this come up on the screen.
And I crossed my fingers, as I took my first steps out the door, that this was Niantic's way of letting us know the Hoenn release would be really soon. I even crossed my toes that it would be this morning... but I knew that was wishful thinking.
There was another new thing on the scanner, as well. This raid had two monster-heads above the gym - and I had no idea what it might mean, or even if it's just a glitch. I feel like a kid at Christmas in an ooh-what's-that kinda way, so I figure I'll go poke it and see if it rattles.
It didn't look much different from close up, either. (And, yes, of course I caught that rattata... I just haven't looked to see if it's tiny, yet.)
Hatching these two guys in quick succession should have provided some clue as to what was about to happen:
I'd walked the first three-quarters of my walk, a sort of quick loop that passes four pokestops and that gym, and then this appears on my screen:
I was so excited, I decided to go back over the ground I'd covered just to see what I could see. I even looked for shadows on my pokefinder screen.
I was very disappointed to find NO shdows on my screen - although the blank location intrigued me. (It turned out to be a sunkern.)
I was on the last leg of my walk, when I finally saw my first Hoenn pokemon - a very sweet little skitty, which hadn't shown up on radar.
...which promptly clawed its way out of the ball and ran away <sigh>.
It wasn't until I got home that I saw my first shadow on the screen - and by then, there were things to do.
Still, there are a lot of Hoenn pokemon to catch, so I guess there's no rush. But later? Later I'ma goin' hunting.

PokemonGo Tips - How to Remotely Feed Pokemon in Gyms
A little while back, I was out walking with my son, and we noticed that one of the gyms we had pokemon in was under attack. So, I said: "Well, we can't feed the pokemon remotely any more, so we'll just have to walk over there and take it back when they're done." And he said: "Actually..."
And that's what led to this post.
Apparently, you can feed your pokemon in a gym, when you're not there - and you can feed other people's pokemon, too. Here's how it works:
You have to have a pokemon in the gym.
Go to your pokemon bag, and select your pokemon by tapping on it - you can tell which ones are in the gym by the golden marker beside them.
When you select the pokemon, you will be taken to a screen showing your pokemon. As you can see, it looks a little different to the page showing a pokemon not in a gym. This one has a picture of the gym, its name, and a little heart with wifi waves coming off the top. it also has a green button that says: GO TO GYM. Tap on the button to go visit your pokemon.
The next screen you will see, will be the inside of the gym. If your pokemon is not alone, you will see the other players' pokemon keeping it company. You will also see how many CP they have left. Tap on any of the pokemon.
As you can see, a berry will appear in front of it. Tap the berry to feed the pokemon. The pokemon does not have to be yours in order for you to be able to feed it.
If you don't want to feed that pokemon, but would rather feed the pokemon next to it, you can tap the pokemon beside it, and the same berry will appear in front of that pokemon. (Yes, sorry rhydon, I'm feeding the charizard...) Tap the berry to feed it to the pokemon.
When you have fed one berry, another berry will appear in front of the pokemon. You can feed it this berry, too, by tapping the berry. You will also notice that the CP above the pokemon has increased.
Another way to select another pokemon, tap the 'x' at the bottom of the screen. This will take you to a picture showing all the pokemon in the gym. It won't accidentally feed the bouncing berry to the pokemon, unless you actually tap the berry, okay? This way you can tease the pokemon with berry and not give the berry away - something I don't recommend, okay?Anyway, when you're ready, tap on another pokemon. Again, a berry will appear in front of it, and you can tap the berry to feed that pokemon. When you run out of berries, the berry icon in the bottom right will fade out, and a little 'x0' will appear in an empty circle where the berry would be. (Yes, I gave the nanap to the rhydon. I am now forgiven... by the rhydon; charizard is not very happy with me. Apparently, he likes nanaps. Who knew?)
When you're done feeding, (or you've run out of berries, whichever comes first), you can view the pokemon inside the gym. You will notice that the CP above the pokemon you have fed is now higher... unless, of course, someone comes along and pummels the pokemon, or the pokemon grows unhappy, while you're busy typing your blog - sorry charizard, but you're still better off than when I started.
And that's how to feed a pokemon remotely. Just tap the 'x' to get out of the gym, and you're all set to catch more pokemon, or head out to the nearest stop for more berries.Happy gaming, all!
And that's what led to this post.

Progress Report: November 2017 Wrap-up
Well, I seem to have drowned you in pokemongo reports over the last few days, so by now you must be wondering just how serious I am about this writing business. I'm very serious, but I use Pokemongo – and Ingress – as motivation for my fitness regime. They get a run, when I go for a walk, or when I run errands, and very rarely does either game choose when that is – and only when I know I have everything else nailed down. Walking, on the other hand, is essential to my health, which is essential to me being able to write, and I’m trying to ensure I do it every day – a bit like taking vitamins, only much more time-consuming.
This week, I managed to walk every day, in spite of trying to give myself a day off on the last day of November. Tomorrow, things might get a bit dicey with the severe weather front that’s moving across, so we’ll have to play that one by ear, but, today, I walked before the storms were due to arrive. This month, it's taken a bit of time to get my feet under me, as I found moving from student to writer a pretty big change, but I think I have my head wrapped around it, now. It was a matter of scheduling in a work day, even though I work at home. After that, things got a lot easier.Sunday, I sat down and worked out a publishing schedule, so not a lot of writing got done, but by Monday I was ready, with a clear work schedule and some concrete tasks for each day. It took a little bit of getting used to,but the week settled into a routine that allowed me to balance the different projects that make up next year's schedule.I have to admit, I’m pretty pleased with the results, even if November’s Week 5 only consists of 5 days because the end of the month has arrived – and that’s nowhere near as short as my first week of December is going to be. That's only 2 days long, including today, because that’s all that are left in the week. As you can see from the results below, working out what I was doing and where I wanted to go, and then setting up a work schedule, has made a world of difference, with over two thirds of the new words produced this month, being produced in the last four days. To be honest, I'm a little stunned. I hadn't realised I'd written that much.Week 5 Progress

PokemonGo Tips - Earning the Youngster Medal
This one's easy... as long as you're in an area where there are lots of rattata. There is only one rule - Catch Them All!
...and, eventually, you'll catch enough that are Size-Small that you will earn your medal.
I am not going to say how many I've had to catch just to reach the 50 needed to achieve the silver level of this medal - and that's not because I'm being difficult; it's just because I've lost count. If we use Pratchettese troll-speak, you're talking 'many, many, lots'.
On the up-side, you only need 25 candy to evolve them into raticate, which means you should have lots of opportunities to gain XP and move yourself along in level.
I'll try to remember to keep a rattata tally on how many I need to catch in order to get to the 300 I need for the gold level of this medal, but I won't promise to remember.
If you're curious, here's what the silver Youngster medal looks like - shiny, right?

Farfetch'd Fetched
My break is over. Lunch is had. Walk is walked. Farfetch'd has been fetched. I've caught three and will just have to be content with that. Here they are:
The first farfetch'd hid out in a local pokemon gathering point where the pokemon just don't show up on the scanner. For some reason he thought I should not pass, so I stuffed him in a pokeball, and went looking for the next one. It helped that he needed improvement in battling.
The second one was just a short walk up the path - in another blind spot on the scanner, although, granted, these guys will occasionally show up as being 'nearby'. This one also needed to improve in battling.
The third one was a surprise. I took a diversion up a path near another local pokestop. There are usually 3-4 pokemon along here, and they never show up on the scanner, so I thought I'd give it a final check, even though there'd been no farfetch'd there on the trip out.
This little guy was at least a decent fighter, with a good defense, hp and stats. I tried to get a shot of him lunging with his shallot, but he stubbornly refused, so I was only able to take the usual shots. Next time, perhaps...
Of course, while these new arrivals were pretty cute, they had nothing on this little local, who stole the show.
That was a little Eastern Rosella, which really was the highlight of a walk, but I was still pretty pleased to catch a couple of farfetch'd, too. Without that incentive, I wouldn't have been out in the midday sun.

Progress Report: Week 4, November 2017
Last week started with a whirlwind visit from my dad, which was nice, and then it settled down a little. I decided I had to focus on my publishing obligations for December, finish the publishing for November, and then see if I thought NaNo was a wash for the year.
Because I’d reached the last 10 days of November, December’s publishing moved to the top of the list. According to the original schedule, I had 1 short story ( Serpents’ Souls & Dragons’ Hearts ), 1 erotic novella for my friend, Ellie ( The Trading Game ), and 1 young adult science fiction novel ( A Planet’s Ransom ) to publish. Of these three, the first two were written, but needed the full process of editing, cover design, formatting and uploading. The last one needed to be finished.
I also wanted to get my long-overdue flash fiction collection out, as well, because I’d let my flash fiction and poetry writing slip during my university years, but that was going to be a long-shot.
Finally, I wanted to get my blogging back in order, because that had really fallen by the wayside.
Before I got into any of that, however, I had to finalise the publication of Wheelchair Mermaid and finished releasing it to all platforms. That took all of Sunday, and part of Monday morning. I also updated my blog, and brought my release and cover announcements back on-line.
By Monday night, I had started and finished all of the publication process for Serpents’ Souls & Dragons’ Hearts , bar the DriveThruFiction and Draft2Digital pre-order uploads. Those I finished Tuesday morning, along with the progress reports I’d missed.
By Tuesday night, I had done the base edit and format of Ellie Moonwater’s The Trading Game: Zach , as well as finalising its cover, so, on Wednesday, I began the CreateSpace edit and format. That took until Friday afternoon, when I rolled straight into formatting and uploading the ebook versions for pre-order.
By that stage, the novella had gone through 8 rounds of edits, and I still found a missing word in the blurb…AFTER I’d finished the uploading and blogging process. It was a vital missing word, so I took an hour to correct everything I could correct at the time, but some files were in review and could not be accessed to be replaced, until Saturday morning.
On Saturday, I had choices, but there really was only one option. I still wasn’t a month ahead of my publishing schedule, let alone the three months I wanted to be, so I made a scheduling change, bumping A Planet’s Ransom to a tentative January release, and heading straight into the final edit for the last release of the year, the much-delayed 366 Days of Flash Fiction , which, of course, has to be the biggest, most awkward, most nightmarish thing to format, and of course it has to be 140,000 words long… of course it does—but the stories are worth it; some still make me cry.
This means I am almost back on track for being a month ahead of my schedule, as well as being almost set to finish writing the rest of Babes in London for the blog. I’m also hoping to start submitting short fiction to other markets, as well as publishing it myself, but we’ll see. Come the end of November, and I’ll be revisiting what I’ll be trying to achieve next year.

The downside to all this publishing is that this week saw no new words, except those added during the editing and publishing process. I worked 59.5 hours, over 7 days – which is much longer than I would have worked at a ‘normal’ day job, but which I enjoyed a whole lot more. This writing thing is kinda fun!

Progress Report: Week 3, November 2017
Week 3 of November rolled on, and I missed my family, but that’s the problem with living so far away from everyone. We enjoyed their company while they were here, and then we went back to work.
For me, that meant realising I really had to get November’s second release up and running. As with October, I already had the month’s first release out there, but the second to be edited, formatted and uploaded—and it needed a cover. By the end of the week, I had the cover and the first round of edits done, and was working my way through the print-on-demand edit and format. I also had a vague idea of where I was going, although I felt very tentative about it, because it was a path I hadn’t been able to pursue full-time, before.Last week’s progress looked like this:

All Stacey wants is a morning on the beach—okay, and maybe to surf again. Like that’s ever going to happen, but a morning on the beach, on her own, as close to the waves as she’ll ever get, again, will do. It’s just that when something swims under the jetty, and a speedboat full of dangerous-looking men arrives on the beach shortly after, she has to do something. Right? Wheelchair or not, right? And that’s when life really starts to get interesting…
Wheelchair Mermaid is the fourth book in the Wheelchair Adventures series, which is based around young people getting their wheels underneath them, after they find themselves in wheelchairs.

A Writer’s Life: Baby Steps Towards Going Pro
It’s taken me a month to wrap my head around what’s next in my life. Up until now, it was a conventional job, or conventional university, full-time. And then came the realisation I needed a bit more time to recover from the experiences I had in my last work place. For now, I can have that more time, and, if I can get my writing to work, I can keep it.
But going full-time writer is harder than it sounds, that shift from having to prioritise a working day over your writing time more difficult than it seems, so it’s taken me three weeks to get my feet under me enough to start really working it out. The first few steps were wobbly.
I had to get a regular fitness routing going – basically, I’m sick of being sick because I’m not fit. That’s starting to consolidate itself into a regular hour of dedicated movement each day, consisting of one large chunk in the morning, and two smaller chunks later on. That’s taken two weeks, but it’s started to embed.
The next step was to give my writing and publishing dedicated work hours, just like I’d give a regular job, regular office hours. I started doing that, this week. What this means, for me, at least, is that I have to not let other (completely justifiable) things get in the way of eight hours of writing and publishing, each day. And by justifiable, I mean the housework, email, social media – all of which can be justifiable because they ‘need’ to be done.
It’s true, they *do* need to be done, but they don’t need to be done in my publishing and writing time—and that’s something I have to be disciplined about. That’s what we’re adding in to the routine, this week and next, while I catch up the outstanding parts of my publishing and blogging schedule, so I can settle in to what I need to do next.
The last three weeks have taught me that I need to do things a little at a time, introduce each new facet into the structure only after the last one’s firmly in place, and that it all takes time to embed. Apparently, the human system doesn’t take to sudden and total change very well, and the human operating it needs to realise that, and treat their equipment right. And that system includes the mind, the emotions, and the body, because they each impact on each other.
You want to stay well so you can write more? You want to be able to think straight, and dig a little more out from under that depression so you can write better? Look after yourself. Understand when you need a break, and when you can push it, just a little bit more, and take the time to work out your quirks. You’re a writer – that person with you in front of the desk is someone you’re going to be spending a lot of time with, so you might as well try to get along.
You’ll need to, if you’re going to succeed.
