The Week’s Accumulation xxxvii

This was a big week in my little corner of the world. The obvious news was Tuesday’s release of the second book in the Threshold Series. The Hidden Deep is in stores now, and I’m thrilled that the next installment of stories is available to readers! But oodles more happened, and it made a nice big mess all over my desktop. Want a peek at the clutter? I’m all set to share!

This week’s accumulation:

The Hidden Deep♦ Book 2: The Hidden Deep is out there, so find yourself a copy! And if you want to give the book a boost, please take the time to review it on sites like Amazon, GoodReads, NovelCrossing, and Barnes & Noble. But most of all … enjoy the adventure!

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Zondervan

♦ On a related note, would you like a postcard? I sent out a big batch earlier this week, and I restocked my supply of postcard stamps this morning. I’m ready for you! Details on how to sign up for my mailing list can be found on the Postcard page.

♦ I’ve been working with some artists this week, and I needed to find character references. Hairstyles, coloring, wardrobe, personality—it can be so tricky to find just the right pics to capture a person who’s been little more than an insistent voice in my head. These probably don’t make much sense out of context, but here’s a smattering of the images that I collected:

Sampling

♦ Business cards happened this week! I’ve been meaning to do this for months now, and my daughter and I finally tackled this item on my authorial to-do list. The result is bright and fun. They’ll be full color on front and back:

Business Card

ANGELS ALL AROUND♦ This week, I demystified myself where QR-codes are concerned. I’ll soon have a set of cards that include this magical little link-up. I’ll share a picture of those when my order arrives from the printer. In the meantime, those of you with spiffy phones can easily check to see what story I’ll be promoting. The rest of us will use this link.

So what’s cluttering up your desktop? Do tell!

Rough and Tumble, Chapter 159: I and Thee

Chapter 159: I and Thee

No one else in the Hedge knew a demon dwelt in the orchard, but Blight made it sound as if Ethan was harboring an enemy. “You misunderstand.”

“You listen. You linger.” Blight glided closer. “You like me.”

Ethan blanched. “You are Fallen. I am Faithful.”

“An interesting contrast. An insider and an outcast.” His eyes glittered. “We should explore our differences.”

The invitation was unthinkable. Shaking his head, the young Guardian retreated. “There is no we.”

“No?” Blight laughed. “I and thee have been a we since you were Sent to me.”

Conrad was calling. Zeke was leaving. Ethan fled.

Rough and Tumble, Chapter 158: Lulled

Chapter 158: Lulled

Ethan had formed numerous impressions of the person standing before him. Clever. Cautious. Blight was given to acerbic remarks. Bitter. Ironic. Had Ethan grown too accustomed to his quarry’s voice? Passive. Patient. He stared guardedly at one whose light had gone dim. Slender. Smiling. Any sense of security had clearly been false. “You are my enemy.”

Lusterless black hair hung raggedly around bony shoulders. Pointed ears and frayed stitching marked him as a former Observer. Blight stared back with eyes in a shade of blue that hinted at former glories. Lively. Lovely. Head shaking, he replied, “I am your secret.”

Rough and Tumble, Chapter 157: Harsh Truths

Chapter 157: Harsh Truths

“You shake. You quake.” Blight’s gentle mockery shifted, seeming to come from above, below, behind. Pigeons scattered, and a rabbit leapt from its burrow, streaking away. “Are you angry with me … or yourself?”

Ethan winced. Was Zeke hurting because he’d failed to get rid of this threat?

“He breaks. He bleeds,” crooned the demon. “But we are not to blame.”

“You knew he would not be able to resist!”

“He chose; he fell.” His tone turned flinty. “These are just consequences.”

Choked by anger, rattled by regrets, Ethan was unprepared for what happened next.

Blight stepped into the open.

Rough and Tumble, Chapter 156: Tampering

Chapter 156: Tampering

“Simple ploys. Careless boys.”

Blight’s sing-song chant drifted like a fitful breeze. A puff here, a gust there. Impossible to pin down. But Ethan gave chase, jaw clenched, sword ready.

“Broken toys. Funny noise.”

Even from here, on the fringes of the orchard behind the machine shed, the Guardian could hear his charge’s sobs. Zeke was suffering. Lucan feared a break. Conrad warned of stitches. “You!” Ethan shouted, tumultuous emotions causing his voice to crack. “You are responsible! I know it was you!”

A hiss of laughter trickled down the young warrior’s spine. “What the Faithful enjoys, the Fallen destroys!”

To celebrate The Hidden Deep‘s release, I’m doing a postcard reveal! The box from the printer came in just over a week ago, and they turned out beautifully! Hannah Christenson’s art features Ephron, the missing angel from Jedrick’s Flight. I asked her to use an extra long canvas for the full illustration in order to emulate the pit that’s his prison.

The postcards are neatly cropped … and ready to share! If you’d like me to send one your way, head on over to my Postcard Page for contact information. I’d be most happy to put something nice in your mailbox!

Rough and Tumble, Chapter 155: The Works

Chapter 155: The Works

“So much for childproofing,” Naomi sighed, poking at the plastic latch that had been no match for her young son.

Zeke beamed. “I helped!”

Ethan looked on curiously as Naomi quietly collected bottles—bubble bath, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bath oil beads, and a sprinkling of salts. While she tidied up, she made her expectations clear. “No more mixing without Momma.”

“’Kay!”

Starting the water, she helped him swish the goop into a towering, fragrant foam. “Just wait until your father gets a whiff of you, little man!”

“P’fume!” Zeke boasted.

She wrinkled her nose. “A whole perfume factory.”

Rough and Tumble, Chapter 154: Too Quiet

Chapter 154: Too Quiet

“He is being very careful,” Ethan whispered, wondering if he could safely intervene.

Alpheus snorted. “He’s always quiet when he gets into mischief.”

“Jude is very brave.”

“Too young. Too trusting,” grumbled the big Guardian as he flexed his hands.

Ethan bit his lip. “He is in so much trouble.”

“Undoubtedly.” Tipping his head to one side, Alpheus said, “It’s an interesting look. You should try it.”

“Me?” The younger warrior ruffled up short bristles. “I would rather not let Zeke near my hair.”

As more crinkle-edged tufts of brown hair hit the floor, Alpheus added, “Especially with pinking shears.”

The Week’s Accumulation xxxvi

Today, I joked to my family that I feel like an old nag who’s caught sight of her stable. The end of the book I’m writing is in view, and I’ve picked up my pace in a rush to get there. It seems strange to me that I’m going to be finishing the final book in the Threshold Series just as the second book is about to release. Lots of news and a little clutter to share this week. Want to see?

This week’s accumulation:

♦ Monday kicked off with a radio interview! The confirmation for it is part of the clutter on my desktop after a busy week. I was on Life Lessons Radio with Rick Tocquigny!

You can listen to the interview, which is archived here >>

♦ Today was supposed to be the release date for Angels All Around, the illustrated Threshold Series prequel. But the publisher let me know late yesterday that it’ll be Monday instead. I’m quite amused that this short story (now 4/22) and The Hidden Deep (4/23) will be almost-twins. Let’s do another teaser for the wonderful illustrations for Angels All Around. Here’s another of Anna Earley’s initial sketches.

♦ Another page was added to this website this week. If you go under the Threshold Series tab, the bottommost page on the list is the GLOSSARY. My editor and I thought it might be nice to create a listing of my orders of angels and some of the angelic jargon that comes up in the series (and in Rough and Tumble). This glossary is printed in the back of Book 2: The Hidden Deep. The version here on my website is subject to change. In fact, I added a few additional bits of trivia to it. Take a gander if you’re interested!

♦ More pins are added each week to my Pinterest boards, including ones for the Threshold Series, Prissie Pomeroy, and Story Art!

♦ Have I mentioned that The Hidden Deep will release on Tuesday? I received an advance copy this week, which was quite exciting. It looks very nice next to The Blue Door on my bookshelf! ♥

Books 1 and 2b

So what’s cluttering up your desktop? Do tell!

Rough and Tumble, Chapter 153: Fourthborn Son

Chapter 153: Fourthborn Son

Ethan wasn’t sure if Zeke loved the bakery because his father was there … or because Jayce let him experiment in the kitchen. The young Guardian leaned on the table, chin on his fist as he watched the little boy. In an apron several sizes too big, he tried to emulate his father’s kneading technique. “Zeke learns by doing.”

“Jayce has noticed. Perhaps this boy will follow in his footsteps.” Jomei leaned against the far wall, arms folded over his chest, looking on with an equally contented smile as his charge passed on a love for baking to his son.
