Tried and True, Chapter 53: Lost in the Crowd

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 53: Lost in the Crowd

Taweel wasn’t the only angel drawn in by the impromptu song. Loitering on the crowd’s fringes with eyes downcast, he listened intently. The Worshiper grieved for the plight of Creation in a way that made Taweel wonder if he’d also mingled with mankind. He reminded God of His promise. He pleaded for a redeemer. He sang of a faith that would become sight.

As the final note faded, Omri chirruped, and Taweel glanced up … meeting the Worshiper’s waiting gaze. With a sleepy smile, the angel nodded a greeting. Or maybe it was goodbye. Because he turned and drifted away.

COUNTDOWN: 1 Week

COMING SOON!  Book 4 in the Threshold Series will release on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, only 1 more week from today. To count down, I’ve been doing posts each Tuesday to share newsy tidbits, sketches, and story art. Since January 21 is Prissie Pomeroy’s birthday (how’s that for providential?), I’ve prepared a game. And you can play along! ✿

The Garden GateThe Pomeroys pull together in the aftermath of the storm that shook West Edinton—and Prissie’s faith—to its very foundations. Letting go proves difficult, and holding on takes all of her courage. With the encouragement of a brother who’s in on her secret, Prissie finds her feet. With the help of the bane who’s now a brother, she takes a stand. As spring comes to the orchard, a cryptic remark from Abner hints at West Edinton’s long-kept secret. A beloved aunt returns from overseas. A faded angel takes up residence atop the Pomeroys’ refrigerator. A treasured friend must say goodbye. While ranks of the Faithful rally to defend what’s most precious, Prissie discovers that angels aren’t the only ones who are Sent. [Available in hardcover and e-book editions.]

PRE-ORDER! Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Zondervan

Happy Birthday, Miss Priss! Over the course of the Threshold Series, Prissie turns fifteen. When I took the time to calculate the exact date of her birth (it’s seventy days after Beau’s special day), we landed here. January 21. And in true Pomeroy fashion, I’ve devised some fun in the form of a game.

Tried and True, Chapter 52: Heaven’s Decorations

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 52: Heaven’s Decorations

Worshipers were made for song, and they often led their angelic brethren in worship. Taweel hadn’t planned to go anywhere near the circle. How could he tune his heart to praise when it was heavy with grief? But this Worshiper wasn’t in the circle.

He stood in a small garden surrounded by candle-trees, his wings outstretched. The zamarim were sometimes called heaven’s decorations, for their wings were exquisite. Beauty and harmony, light and music. This particular Worshiper had deep blue hair feathering away from his forehead like exotic plumage.

And his song was sad enough to pierce Taweel’s heart anew.

Tried and True, Chapter 51: Establishing a Perimeter

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 51: Establishing a Perimeter

Street by street, Taweel paced off the entire Weavers’ district. Up until now, he’d blocked out the ebb and flow of life here. Now, he threaded his way through the crowd, watching for patterns, learning their ways.

The beghedim didn’t have captains or Flights. They needed no training grounds. But like every district he’d seen during his wandering, there was a central circle. Stone rings provided seating, fanning out from a low pedestal where one of the Worshipers would offer the endless, overlapping songs that marked the watches.

Even now, Taweel could hear a voice. And it broke his heart.

The Week’s Accumulation lxxiii

I played catch-up this week. When I’m entrenched in a manuscript, whether writing or editing, other things tend to slide. So part of this week was spent in dealing with little piles of what-not: sending out postcards, replying to emails, and learning the ins and outs of sending a newsletter. This week’s authorial clutter is especially nice, due in part to a cover reveal. Come and see!

This week’s accumulation:

♦ My very first newsletter was sent out into the world this morning. Thank you to everyone who subscribed! If you missed out this time around, fear not! There’s always next month. I’m already plotting February’s exclusive content. Sign up here >>

♦ One of the things I did this week was write a new bio for my upcoming devotional. This is bafflingly hard. If I don’t know me, who does? The blurb we used for the Threshold Series feels like it belongs to a fiction writer. And that’s only part of what I do. So it was time to tackle another facet of my personality … while remaining true to myself. Here’s part of that bio:

Christa Kinde believes in bright colors, good manners, crazy socks, word games, cat naps, and postage stamps. But most of all, she believes in God.

Have you ever had to describe yourself? What would you put in a list of things you believe in?

♦ Let’s do that cover reveal! I’m all kinds of delighted with Anna Earley’s art for my short stories, so it was a no-brainer to have her do book covers for my serials. She finished the one for Rough and Tumble yesterday!

_Rough and TumbleI love that these Threshold companion tales all have the same look. Look forward to another short story, which is coming soon. Angels on Guard is scheduled to release in February. And Anna will be developing the cover for Tried and True over the next few weeks. I’ll probably be able to share sketches soon.

Stories 1, 2, RnT

♦ Did you catch the fun facts and trivial bits in the comments of the last Countdown post? Remember… when you chat with me, I chatter back! ; )

So what’s cluttering up your desktop? Do tell!

Tried and True, Chapter 50: Comfort Zone

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 50: Comfort Zone

“Enough, little one.” Taweel caught Omri between strong fingers. “Rest from your manna-making and enjoy the ride.”

With a hum, the yahavim fluttered free and settled on the Guardian’s bare shoulder.

Since Weft needed more time to finish stitching Taweel’s collar, Loris had loaned him a warrior’s sleeveless tunic. The small change helped Taweel feel more like himself, which was probably why he was falling back on old habits.

Carefully marking the location of Loris’s home, the Guardian entered the street. Even though no danger could befall his new family here, he’d rest easier knowing the lay of the land.

Tried and True, Chapter 49: Bronze Thread

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 49: Bronze Thread

Taweel stared at his tunic sleeve. The absence of embroidery had appealed to him, but he realized something important. “The weave itself still connects me to the maker.”

Loris patted the warrior’s broad shoulder. “And that’s me.”

Weft tapped the back of Taweel’s hand and asked, “Will you let me add your name?”

“It would be excellent practice.” Loris reached without looking and chose the thread used for hadarim. “Provided your burly apprentice doesn’t mind being claimed by such a young mentor …?”

Faced by the boy’s pleading gaze, Taweel gave in. “Training is essential. I am in your hands.”

Tried and True, Chapter 48: Ties that Bind

_Tamaes Header

Chapter 48: Ties that Bind

“Does a Weaver ever stop?” Taweel asked.

Loris nudged Weft, who giggled and said, “Only to thread his needle.”

A joke. But not far from the truth. The beghedim lived up to their industrious reputation.

“A new Flight has been formed for a young captain,” Loris remarked.

Taweel wondered how he stayed so well-informed. “Who told you?”

“Raiment serves more than one purpose. See? It’s all here.” Sea-green thread gleamed on the collar Loris had been embellishing. “These patterns tell a story. They connect this cherub to his new men, his old mentor, his comrades, his Creator. And to me.”
