For this famous photo, Ponting clambered inside an ice cave. Its entrance perfectly frames the Terra Nova in the bay. Ponting thought that this photograph was one of his best, and in The Heart of the Great Alone, present-day explorer David Hempleman-Adams says he considers it “as significant an image as Neil Armstrong standing on the moon for the first time”.
