A GOOD BOOK!

My reading habits are far reaching. I love a good mystery but still my preferences are for true stories. Our life stories are so varied and often fascinating.

Due, I suppose, to the time I spent in Vietnam during the war years, I read a lot of military stories. All my life I have read military history. However, since ‘Vietnam’ I have been concerned about the effect of war on our young military men and women.

Recently I read a superb story written by a young 24 year old American Second Lieutenant who was sent to Afghanistan on a first assignment. The book is titled ‘Outlaw Platoon’. The author was the leader of the platoon. No book I have read can better show the mental conflict between a young man’s sense of duty (and love and protection of his men) and his moral sense of right. They don’t always go hand in hand and how he handles it shows much about this person. You finish the book feeling great empathy/love, for this young man. You feel for the loss of innocence of all such young men. And if you are an American, you must feel proud.

The book was written with help and the writing is masterful. It is a one night – all night read. I downloaded it from Amazon.

The Outlaw Platoon by Sean Parnell, John Bruning.

“In combat men measure up. Or don’t. There are no second chances!”

Happy 4th of July America

My sequel to GJM is half finished. I have been editing as I go and that slows me down. Nevertheless, I will still need to edit it again, and again, and again………. Some days I love it – other days I hate it. It starts where GJM ends and takes place in New York, Jamaica, Miami, Alaska. I don’t have a title yet.

Today is the 4th of July in the States. I sure hope all my friends back there are enjoying it. I fondly remember all the happy 4th of July picnics I took my kids on in the lovely forests of Washington State..

Favorite Memoirs

I love reading memoirs. I read celebrity memoirs or those of unknown people …as long as they are not boring. Like the old saying goes, ‘everyone has a story. A few years ago I read Jane Fonda’s book ‘My life So Far’. It was so well written that I was sure she had help. I searched to find a second name (in small print) but there was none so I had to assume she wrote it herself. It’s worth a read. Do any of you have favorite autobios, bios, memoirs?

This week I had some good news. Goodbye Junie Moon received its first Amazon review and it was five stars. I don’t know who the reviewer was but I send a big Thank You!

Its a lovely su…

It’s a lovely sunny day here on my mountain top. Fred, our pesky carpet snake has not shown his face this morning. We had him removed a few months ago but he has found his way back. I am surprised he is not hibernating, as it is winter. If he gets much bigger I will have to have him removed again to protect other small creatures. That is a pity, as I have grown fond of him.

I thought today I would include the blurb, a synopsis, I have written for the back page of the POD version of my book (Due out in Aug/Sept.). Hope you like it.

Goodbye Junie Moon – BLURB

A curvaceous Australian dancer entertains the troops in Vietnam. She uncovers a get rich quick scheme involving the sergeants running the American Army clubs. Discovering that she has reported them to the CID, they place a high price on her head. She learns they are watching the only airport out, preventing her escape. Then fate steps in, triggering an unexpected turn of events.

Goodbye Junie Moon is a memoir which reads like fiction and is guaranteed to keep you turning the page. This true story is verified by numerous newspaper and magazine articles.

Racy, action-filled, heart stopping, poignant; it is all of these!

The Khaki Mafia by Robin Moore and June Collins

The Khaki MafiaThe Khaki Mafia by Robin Moore

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I did not actually READ this book, I co-wrote it with Robin Moore. The book pictured in Goodreads is not the actual cover of The Khaki Mafia and therefore neglects to show my name.

Although this book was written aeons ago, it is still a good read today. However, since then, I have recently written a memoir which skewers several of the same events. The memoir is titled Goodbye Junie Moon and will be available on Amazon in mid June 2012 as an e book and also will be out in POD in August.

I have immodestly rated The Khaki Mafia as five stars as it did indeed sell close to one million copies.

I am still waiting for my manuscript to come back from e formatting. Apparently I must wait two or three weeks before getting it back and transmitting it to Amazon.  Meantime it is cold and raining – perfect writing weather! So there is no excuse for me not to get to work on the sequel.
